Interview: Pastry Chef Natasha Pickowicz’s 2019 Bake Sale

"I chose Planned Parenthood NYC because its services — from basic health care to providing safe, legal abortions — have been a constant presence in my life and were the one thing I knew I could access when I moved to New York with no money or health insurance; the organization’s Manhattan headquarters are nearby on Bleecker Street, and anchoring the bake sale to PPNYC felt like the right way to support accessible health services for families across the boroughs even though the issue can be polarizing." - Daniela Galarza

Had an appointment scheduled for today at 2:30 pm but it was abruptly cancelled due to a staff member logging the appointment incorrectly. I had to reschedule it for a week later despite needing a prescription refilled and the lady on the phone was unapologetic about this massive inconvenience. Unprofessional.

Google
Although this location is closing the staff was extremely polite and helpful ! Nurse Nordia was so empathetic and professional , she’s amazing !!

I was late to my 12:30 appointment by 30 mins. I was still taken care of as soon as I walked in. The staff was super friendly the receptionist her name started with a T accommodated my needs. Mindy was so nice and friendly during my intake and understanding of my situation and the team i had was just above and beyond. I am truly so thankful to the staff and to this place for everything they did for me today.

Dana B.

Google
The staff is empathetic, intelligent, and hardworking. They made me feel welcome—never rushed or overlooked. While negative reviews mention long wait times, this is due to the clinic operating with a skeleton crew because of underfunding, not disorganization. They go above and beyond to make this clinic exceptional. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Madison B.

Google
The doctors and nurses here are wonderful but unfortunately wait times are insane because higher ups have asked them to see more people. I arrived at 8am for an 8:10 routine STI testing appointment and didn’t leave until 10:45. As someone who doesn’t do well with needles, I purposefully scheduled my appointment as early as possible, and having to wait in a state of heightened anxiety for nearly three hours was difficult for me. This testing could’ve been done in like 20 minutes. The doctor told me that because they’ve been asked to see more people, everyone was having to wait three hours. Despite having a good experience with all of the staff here, I will likely be having testing done in the future with a PCP. If anyone in charge is reading this— seeing less people faster will likely result in happier clients

Recently heard that this clinic is closing and I pray that they use the funds from selling it to ensure that other clinics are NOT run the way that this place is. My daughter found out that she had miscarried two weeks ago at her appointment and opted to take the pill to help complete the process rather than surgically. THEY MISLABELED HER MEDICATIONS and as someone who does not take meds not even OTC- she really let an ibuprofen sit under her tongue for several minutes because it was labeled as the anti-nausea meds. So now her timing was off with the proper meds she should have taken in timing with others and she's puking because the ibuprofen was gross! Thank goodness the other pills were labeled correctly, imagine how badly this could've went! On top of that the first person she saw behind the doors was rude and made her uncomfortable. An already terrible experience made worse by error and attitude from the place that is supposed to help guide her through. We are grateful to live in a state where PP is accessible, but it really needs to be done better.

Jessica T.

Google
Very Positive experience. Very empathic care and thoughtfulness from each and every individual who cared for me. I would recommend this clinic to anyone who needs care for any circumstance. All of my questions were answered without making me feel embarrassed or small. Felt safe and comfortable. Honored my appointment despite me running 30 minutes late.

After my visit yesterday, I would have to say I don’t think I’d chose this planned parenthood ever again. It was PACKED out, the “movement” was slow. I arrived early as stated too. My appointment was 11:10, I arrived 10:55. Be prepared to WAIT and WAIT and WAIT. With little to no response or basic general responses to what they tell everyone. I wasn’t seen / had my treatment fully until 3:15-3:20PM. I had to sit and wait all DAY long, so you’re telling me it takes anywhere from 4-6 hours of what? WAITING. Because paperwork takes 5/10 minutes and an ultrasound takes 10 minutes, the rest was spent waiting WHY? Because it was so PACKED. After care was fine, except I had to go and FIND nurses to escort me out of the place. I won’t return to this sight. The other location is much nicer less of a wait time. To say the least, please read all reviews before coming.

Charlie E.

Yelp
Insane to wait hours when you have an appointment. Horribly run. Like so bad I'm just not getting tested next time. So bad it will lead to more people having stds. They need to hire more people asap.

Yelp
I was recommended to PPNY by a friend who like me is a chicken when it comes to doctors. Unfortunately us ladies sometimes we have to to make sure everything is working as it should especially every five years the older we get. Ayecarambah I'm gonna be forever young but, I digress. The staff at PPNY is the most wonderful team I've come into contact with for a while. From beginning to end. I'll try to thank them here from memory, I really hope I don't forget anyone; TERRENCE: at security was thorough, professional and very courteous. I was then sent to check in where I was checked in as though I was at a five star hotel. The receptionists are such beautiful souls. Including the guy that took the time to escort me to the toilet. I didn't get his name. My next interaction was with JESSIE and to be honest (excuse my old lady emotions) but her kindness almost brought me to tears. NATALIE then took my vitals and medical history and as a fellow Caribbean sister I was more than comfortable sharing EVERYTHING with her. Hehehe. Get this, Natalie tried to send me to a particular doctor because she felt "our personalities would match". I inquired more. She explained that all the doctors at PPNY did their work extremely well but sometimes, she likes to send folks to doctors they'd vibe even more with, helping them to be more comfortable. Isn't that wonderful and thoughtful!! Wow. I then met Dr. CHELSEA and I kid you not, is she even old enough to be out of middle school? The young, pretty hip doctor (she's a midwife but still Dr. Chelsea to me) shared a wealth of information and her knowledge with me even beyond her call of duty.  At no time did I feel rushed like has happened at other doctor's office and I was with her for such an amount of time that I ran out of things to discuss with her. That's a first for me. Haha. A mature Russian lady on the third floor took my blood and I'm still waiting to feel that prick she spoke of. She was so gentle. I suggest you make an appointment before coming here. I met patients in the first waiting room on my arrival and left them still there after being thoroughly seen to about an hour later. The office can get swamped. Annnnd, would someone tell the women with placards at the front of the building to go find a worthy cause to protest. Like how about tying themselves to a tree in the Amazon? It's burning? Okay.  Not everyone who goes there is about termination. And if it were so, how dare you try to police other women's bodies!  I took dozens of condoms from the assortment in each room I entered. Who knows, one day I may totally get to try the banana flavoured one! Yeah! Dream big I say! Dream big. The staff here didn't choose their professions, they were specially chosen by God. The kindness, compassion, professionalism and care I received at this health facility goes way above and beyond. They are indeed topnotch. I'm so thankful I listened and chose this place. I recommend one gazillion times! The End.

Syd S.

Yelp
If you're looking for kind compassionate and experienced individuals go to the Bleeker street Planned Parenthood. My experience was nothing short of quality and care. I genuinely believe the women who treated and helped me are literal angels. I went in for complications and was met with genuine compassion. Not only are they warm but extremely intelligent. They will listen and not judge!

Bridget S.

Yelp
VERY unprofessional. 1. In December 2 of my appointments got cancelled, for no reason, didn't contact me why or to offer a new appointment just got a text that it got cancelled. 2. The second time I made the appointment I told them it was really important for me to come because I need my birth control refilled as I was on the last 6-7 pills, they still canceled my appointment. 3. As I was on the phone and had more questions, the lady just shut the phone on me! It didn't break up, she sounded annoyed that I have questions and was clear to me she hung up and of course no call back.. Overall very disappointed, as I have been going to planned parenthood for years and I'm really upset how they treated me in an emergency and on the phone. I leave this review here because this was the location I called every single time.
google avatar

Vicky V.

Yelp
Called this location to make an appointment and whoever the employee was that answered the phone had a TERRIBLE ATTITUDE. She kept cutting on and off and her attitude just got worse. Someone needs to teach who ever answered the phone about customer service
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
They will NOT judge you! You will look around and see that you are not alone! Everyone is welcome here and the staff go *out of their way* to make you feel safe and cared for!! The social workers are amazing and they will help you with anything you need and they will just listen to you if that's all you need!

Yelp
They took me as a walk in and while I waited for an hour, it was worth it (I left and came back instead of sitting there). They offer a variety of services and woman care. I needed to get my Pap smear done and a pregnancy test, my entire visit lasted from 1:30-3pm, which isn't too bad considering I waited longer in urgent care. My provider was NP Chelsey, she was informative and had a great bedside manner. They offer birth control refills and education. I noticed they are very open minded and one of the first questions they ask were about your pronouns. I would come back here for any woman's health services I need in the future. Also, if you have financial difficulties they will work with you to figure it out.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing care at this Planned Parenthood location. From the front desk staff, to the nurses, and doctors, everyone was so helpful, kind, and gentle. They made me feel very comfortable and ensured I had all the information I needed. In the past, some doctors have left me feeling disappointed and uncared for, but I left my appointment feeling very supported and safe. I had an early morning appointment, and they saw me right on time. Check in, pre-screening, and the appointment all took less than 1 hour for a typical birth control consultation. I tried finding an OB-GYN, and the reviews for local clinics were terrible and I thought I would try Planned Parenthood. This was my first time using their services, and I highly recommend them if you're looking for healthcare.

Yelp
Exceptional service! I came here to get my Nexplanon removed after Parkmed NYC told me it was too deep. At Planned Parenthood, I met with Chelsea and Alex and they were so kind and got my implant out right away. They congratulated me on my pregnancy plans and made me feel comfortable. I walked out with a smile and a bag of free pregnancy tests. Great job, guys!

Yelp
Came here recently for an annual check-up since I stayed away last year and they were delaying appointments anyway due to the pandemic. It turned out that I still had to get my last Gardasil vaccine shot. Even though I mentioned to the medical staff that I'm scheduled to get my 2nd Covid vaccine shot later that week, they still told me I could get the shot that day. Today at my Covid-19 vaccine appointment they tell me that PP should have advised me to wait b/c now I have to come back 2 weeks later. No one at PP warned me that taking these vaccines close together could decrease each of their efficacy. I want to support PP, but they need to do better at the basics of providing competent healthcare. Today I wasted time, money, and put myself at increased risk Covid-19 infection by making an unnecessary trip outside. That could have all been avoided. Given how difficult it has been for many people to get Covid-19 vaccine appointments, this is even more unacceptable.

Eve J.

Yelp
prescribed me antibiotics for the wrong thing and then couldn't get me in when i was in severe pain and discomfort (even though i said i was willing to wait for the rest of the day if someone missed their appointment). I walked in at 2:30pm and front desk claimed they were done excepting walk ins for the day (the office closes at 8:30). I've been hung up on by the front desk multiple times trying to make an appointment and thought if I went in and spoke with someone I would have a better experience.

Yelp
A special shout out to: Irina- Ultrasound tech Sheila- Counselor Rose- Nurse Dr. Miller Laura- Recovery Nurse Thank you ladies

Yelp
Super frustrating. I went here for a UTI test, which typically has a quick lab turnaround. Without knowing whether or not I had an infection, I was given antibiotics to take preemptively. My stomach does poorly on antibiotics, and so I made the decision to wait until after the results came back to start taking them. The issue is that it's been over 2 weeks and I still don't know whether or not I'm fighting a UTI. I've called several times and no one is able to tell me why it's taking so long. At this point I'm going to have to schedule an appointment to see another doctor, which is what I've been trying to avoid this whole time. I'm very upset with this process, and find it even worse that every time I call there has been no attempt to resolve this for me.

Lonnisha H.

Yelp
They work with all kinds of insurance and won't turn you back if there is an issue you have options and the staff is professional and super friendly and helpful when answering any questions you may have

Yelp
Look at this review more for the content than the star number, for I have things to share! First, the great things: planned parenthood will cover you medically if you have no insurance, this is FANTASTIC for women at large. I have never had an abortion, but knowing that you can get free abortions is great. I have often had to spend a long time waiting for service, but I also get free service. I can't really complain about that. Whenever I want to get an STD / pregnancy / Pap test, I tend to come here. Should I opt for a regular OB/GYN? Probably, when I am more settled and have a more regular insurance. Issue 1: I discovered irregularities in cell growth on my cervix, and did a colposcopy procedure at the Brooklyn site which was painful, left me extremely disoriented, and bleeding way more than normal during and immediately after the procedure. I don't know if it was execution on the part of the nurse practitioner, but it felt traumatic. Issue 2: Birth control options. I have never been on birth control except the condom, and every time I come to PP I discuss this possibility with whoever I see, but I never seem to get a really good answer. I get pushed the IUD every time, and per my colposcopy experience, putting things invasively near the cervix is extremely painful. That part is NOT discussed clearly or at all, and only the benefits are emphasized or even broached. That's not good medical practice. A patient should be fully informed of the risks and benefits of their treatment. I would argue I wasn't fully informed of the implications or the necessity of my colposcopy either. In talking about the Nuva-Ring, I was only told about the mechanism of how it works. Left out is the research I accidentally stumbled upon: that because it delivers a stronger dose of hormones, the ring causes more incidences of blood clots, and so does the patch. Come on! I don't feel safe NOT knowing, because what else are you leaving out? I'll tell you what, the IUD has caused a lot of grief with more than one of my friends. I had a friend who had an IUD in and then took it out a few months later, then bled (continuously) for like two years until she went on another type of hormonal birth control and other treatments. Another friend had a miscarriage with an IUD. I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just saying, do your research before jumping on these bandwagons. I don't feel that PP is entirely unbiased here, and that's unfortunate.

Khaaliyah S.

Yelp
The most caring and non judgmental staff ever. They made me feel comfortable from start to finish and never left me confused. I was expecting to spend all day in the office but it was shorter than expected.

zayla a.

Yelp
I normally hate getting my blood drawn. But Jazel was amazing. Fast easy and pain free honestly!!! Hands down the best phlebotomist out there. Coming from someone who used to sit in their mom's lap until I was 17 trying to get my blood drawn.
google avatar

Destiny R.

Yelp
Had a TOP appointment on Saturday 9/21/18 Upon waiting on the second floor, I went to the lab for HIV testing. An asian male doctor, not the most friendly, took my blood. He gave short demands, "put your stuff down, sit" "go back to the waiting room." Not even a smile or a good morning. Shortly after I went to the third floor to wait some more before my procedure, where an older colored woman sat in the secretary desk, headphones in both ears. I said "excuse me" twice before raising my voice to say "Hello?!!" and she looked at me and said "have a seat" before I even got to speak (mind you, I had already been sitting.) I said "I am sitting" and again, she repeated to have a seat. At this point, I'm pissed - I told her I'm not trying to get her attention for her to tell me what I already know but instead, if I can charge my phone. She pulled out her own charger with an attitude and put her headphones back in. She's really fucking lucky I didn't go off on shorty for even having headphones in while working in the first place, and not allowing me to talk. On the flip side, a lovely lady named Jenny took my information and handled my concerns with sincerity, genuinely and friendliness. You work at Planned Parenthood people, where people are having life changing decisions, some not easy. Having bedside manner should be an obligated part of the job. Damn.

Yelp
The good: I've been wanting to do this for years. There has never been an iota of a millisecond in my life where I ever wanted children. I want to blow all my money on Elvis memorabilia and fur babies. When I spoke to my primary doctor about getting a vasectomy, he gave me the usual runaround of "you're a young man, you'll change your mind" and he just kind of blew off the idea. Not cool! I came to Planned Parenthood and at no point did anyone ever bug me about any of that fluff or try and talk me out of it like my parents because "you'll want kids someday" or my favorite "what will you do when you get old?" What am I gonna do when I get old? I'm gonna f*&^ng cash out THE MINUTE I start slipping. Throw me in a dumpster on Ditmars Blvd in Astoria and help yourself to whatever money is in my pockets; go have a Yelp party. I no longer have to worry about slipping one past the goalie. Female birth control pills/shots/devices sometimes have side effects and when you see what the ladies have to go through to get sterilized, YIKES! Planned Parenthood helped me take responsibility and say "ladies, I'll take one for the team" and I intend to pay it forward. I'm going to work really hard, get into a top 100 law school, become Johnnie Cochran, and slam morons with reproductive rights lawsuits. Supreme Court, here I come! The staff were 110% non judgmental. Consults felt more like a chat where it was made very clear to me that this was permanent and meant I could never father children of my own. (GOOD! Have you seen college costs?) It was also made crystal clear I could change my mind at any time. (Everyone seemed surprised how strongly my mind was made up.) The head clinician double checked and signed all the paperwork as a witness. At the moment of truth about 2 months later, I was greeted and led into a surgery room by the team. After introductions I was asked last minute questions. I had to sign more paperwork and was given clear last minute instructions; do not grab the groin area, lay in a certain way on the table, and if I needed to hold someone's hand they could help with that. The surgery team said "we welcome all nut and ball jokes" and they meant it. You could say they're nuts for nuts! The only painful part was when they sprayed antiseptic on my freshly manscaped groin. FLAMETHROWER! The surgery itself was 110% painless and they played Elvis songs for me. I did not even need ice/Tylenol after. When they cauterized the tubes, I wanted to say "I like my nuts well done, please roast some more". They were stunned. "You didn't even wince ONCE. You were cool as a cucumber from the consultation to this. We've never seen that before." On that alone, I wanted to take them all out to dinner but I worried they would find it creepy so I didn't say anything. At the end, the head surgeon asked if I had a jockstrap and I did. She threw her arms in the air and shouted "FINALLY! A MAN WHO LISTENS!" Apparently, men often come in there clueless & commando. They grab, yell, squirm. Dummies! I told them "if I could do it all over again, I would come here to get sterilized every week. Thank you! Thank you very much!" and they said "You are literally the best patient we have ever had." Yeah, they probably say that everyone but I was happy to be a little ray of sunshine. Protip: Wear a jockstrap!!! The bad: If I want to be a ballbreaker, the online system cocked me over. Their next available vasectomy consultation appointment was over 1 month out, and when I arrived they said "there's been a mistake". That's NOT what you wanna hear from the people who are gonna roast your nuts. To be fair, they didn't have a nutcracker in their hands as they said it, and the entire staff apologized profusely. (It was not their fault. The stupid online system failed to tell me they only do vasectomy consults on certain days!) Not necessarily a "bad" thing, but why are there no male patient care personnel? I wish I could work there because I feel I'd be a real asset. The ugly: There's no need to dance around it. Some people come here because this is the end of the line. They've got nowhere else to turn because their primary doctor won't do anything out of fear the sky monster will get them. My heart goes out to the folks you WILL see in the waiting room with long faces. The only smiles you will see are on the patient care personnel. There are sometimes protesters outside. (If I could, I would have thrown chunks of my vas deferns at them.) You gotta go through metal detectors before you can get the care you want. You wanna know what happened to the American dream? IT CAME TRUE. YOU'RE LOOKING AT IT. In conclusion: I got to lay on a table as intelligent, funny, and laid back women sang with Elvis, grabbed my groin, and ensured I will remain the 1 of 1 limited edition early 80's Cadillac that I am. As I lay there I thought to myself "I must have died and gone to heaven". How was your Monday morning?

Yelp
Came here for a routine yearly appointment and found this location to be my least favorite. First walking in the lobby was packed and I had trouble even finding a seat to fill out paperwork. A lot of the people sitting around didn't even look like they had an appointment and were all maybe waiting on someone else but regardless I shouldn't have to stand. After about 30mins past my actual scheduled appointment time I was called back into a room. After speaking to the nurse I was brought to another room for the exam, then back into an office. In the office I was asked to fill out more paperwork and answer a series of questions. After all of it I was charged over $300 for my appt. Needless to say I haven't been back since and have no plans to. Other locations have been cleaner, have more seating, have nicer/much more pleasant staff, don't run so behind on appointments, and are not this expensive.

Yelp
I had read a lot of the reviews before coming here, and expected the worst. But, I needed to visit a PP and get info and all that jazz. So I selected this location. I showed up on a Wednesday, without an appointment and yes, you are screened and checked like you're entering a prison. But seriously, better safe then sorry. The security guard, was a sweet heart to me and even joked around about the lunch I had in my bag. In this world of lunatics that are ANTI-CHOICE! You have to check for things. Anyway, the woman at the front desk is hella sassy and a tinge of rude. But she was polite and kind after a bit of warming up. She helped me set up an appointment for the following week. I'll write another review after my appointment
google avatar

Casey W.

Yelp
- as comfortable as I was with my last gyno (who I had been seeing since the tender age of 17), Carol Bues is my new doctor of choice - bedside manners of both the nurses and doctors were fantastic although the clerical staff left something to be desired - in and out in 2 hours with an appointment, test result waiting times included, I'm sold
google avatar

Yelp
Planned Parenthood must be sustained and funded by the government. I always get the best service with them via phone and online. I got my implant today with Roxanne and Lauren; most professional even with the epidemic going on. My implant was done painlessly and in such a short time. I would not be able to get this type of service at a private clinic due to the liability issue. You can't go wrong with Planned Parenthood!
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
I'm so happy to share a raving review of this place. Any reason you need to visit a Planned Parenthood is usually anxiety ridden, so when you're greeted with kindness, it goes a long way. My counselor had such good energy and actually relaxed me a LOT:) Barely had to wait and I was a walk-in. I'm really grateful for this place.

Yelp
This place saves lives. Every experience I have had at this location has been great. I have been here for multiple things. The staff makes you feel comfortable and are there to help you. Thank you PP.

Yelp
When you're asked whether or not you will harm someone if they transmit an STI, never say yes! Lol I answered maybe I might and was sent to the social services department to speak with a social worker. Even she knew I was kidding...or maybe not. Very clean facility and much better than the Brooklyn location. You can easily miss the one in Brooklyn, but this one is so easy to get to. I only waited for maybe 10 or 15 minutes before seeing someone. The security personnel make you feel like you're in an airport and under the jurisdiction of the TSA but I digress. Anyhoo, well the removal of my IUD took maybe one minute. It was quick fast and easy. Getting a prescription for the pills was just as easy as well. So I definitely love coming here than going to my PCP to make an appointment with my gynecologist. Getting an appointment at PP is hell. I waited a month to get one and they're very booked up. Of course I would come back...they're awesome and I love that as women we have the right to choose and I love the different options given to us regarding autonomy over our reproductive system.

Yelp
Everyone - literally everyone on staff that I came in contact with during my visit seemed both well-informed and invested in making my experience as comfortable as possible. As a visibly queer person concerned for my health it was such a relief to be treated in such a positive way. I was very, very scared and anxious but was put at ease immediately by everyone's kind words and nonjudgmental attitudes. Could not possibly recommend more.

Yelp
I'll keep this short because I hate having to relive the experience. There are certain staff members who should be retrained in beside manor, compassion and just overall knowledge when they're communicating with patients. I went here to terminate a pregnancy. The information I was given was by the sonographer was totally incorrect. I was told that I was 7 weeks and that it was a bad pregnancy because she couldn't find the fetus. My experience in having the procedure was unpleasant. The anesthesiologist's bedside manor was horrible and I felt very rushed in recovery and never received actual discharge papers. The following week I followed up with my GYN with a sonogram and was told that I was STILL pregnant, 10 fucking weeks!! Can you believe it? Heart broken and devastated. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Due to the lack of availability with other places, I was forced to return to the same place! To hopefully get it terminated correctly. Extra stressful, emotionally draining and everything in between. After speaking with the Director of Services, the second trip was much better. Everyone was super nice. I requested a full report the the previous visit, reports for the second visit and before and after sonograms of my uterus to ensure I don't leave pregnant AGAIN! WTF. I Shouldn't have to request all of this because of such A BIG ERROR LIKE THIS!! THE ONLY reason I gave 2 stars is because the second visit was better. On a good note, place is clean. Normally I would share something so personal but I put my personal feelings aside and decided to share to help other women to be careful.

Yelp
My apt was at 8:50, it is now 9:50 and I am still waiting. I have another appointment that's not associated with PP at noon that I'm going to have to cancel. If you have nothing to do all day go to this PP because you'll surely be waiting forever. My np on the other hand was very professional, sweet, and to the point. Really enjoyed her!

Alycia P.

Yelp
If you want to see a Dr or nurse about a pregnancy confirmation they stop patients from seeing them at 4 pm.. 3 hours before they close. Its very helpful for working women.... Just an FYI. I arrived around 6 pm, Told me to go to urgent care and gave me a take home test. Thanks PP

Yelp
I went for a scheduled appointment today and was very pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure if the other reviews citing long wait times were walk-ins but I was in and out in about an hour. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Quick Take: Bring a granola bar and a book. You're gonna be here awhile. Also, leave your "dangerous" items at home if you don't want to be horribly inconvenienced. Writing this negative review sucks because I've supported Planned Parenthood's cause for years now. I'm not a wealthy person, but I've donated hundreds of dollars and been a vocal advocate however I can be. Being between jobs at the moment, I found myself uninsured and in need of an annual well-woman exam. I decided to turn to Planned Parenthood and boy, did I regret it. First, there was the rigamarole about me bringing in my keychain which has a (legal) capsaicin spray and an (also legal) pocket knife. Okay, no big deal. I understand that with the violence that's happened to PP center lately that they have to be a little more vigilant. So, I asked the security guard if I could leave them with him and collect it when I come back. NOPE! He said. I'd have to throw them out OR hide them outside. Or, I'd have to leave and reschedule my appointment which, by the way, took me almost two weeks to get. I was gobsmacked that they didn't have a space place to hold on to items they deem "dangerous" since I'm sure I'm not the only woman in New York who carries such a keychain. So I started begging and pleading with the guy until finally they called the clinical director out and she agreed to hold my keys after I begged and pleaded with her too. After that was the waiting, and the waiting, and the waiting. The entire staff is very rude and unprofessional and treat you like you're a nuisance more than a priority. Get this, I wanted for nearly THREE HOURS before I was seen by a clinician, who seemed all too eager to rush me out of there and not answer my questions. And to the right-wing A-holes complaining about "free" women's health care. I'mma stop you right there. My simple Pap smear ran me $175. I continue to support Planned Parenthood's mission but will never use them again, even if I am in a pinch.

Yelp
They don't deserve the good reputation that they have. They really only care about you if you need contraceptives or an abortion. I came in here once because I was getting frequent UTIs. It was difficult and embarrassing to talk about. Rather than being helpful they were dumbfounded and annoyed. I don't recommend them and when everyone sings the tune about how great and important Planned Parenthood is I tell them this story.

Yelp
In lieu of a situation in which I am without insurance as I wait for a new job to start, I decided to go in to Planned Parenthood to have my annual exam and testing done. I have to admit, prior to going and reading some of these reviews, I wasn't sure if it was worth a three-hour wait, protesters and nasty security guards just so I could get my annual on time. But, honest to God, I was surprised. I had my appointment scheduled for 4 pm, and I showed up at 3:30, thinking I could save some time. It's probably the time of day, but there were no Biblethumpers, so I saved myself from having useless brochures shoved in my face. Additionally, when going through security, they could not have been more professional. They weren't overly enthusiastic to see me, nor were they rude - they're security guards, not Avon representatives. It was a little odd having to walk through the "male waiting room" or whatever that first room full of men is. They all kind of stare at you and it's not a great way to start a visit that will probably be full of invasive questions and/or procedures. But, whatevs. I proceeded to the appointment desk, where the young woman was cordial and welcoming. I filled out some paperwork, waited a bit, and then went up to the third floor to figure out ways for me to pay for services or apply for insurance. The wait for insurance assistance was long, but the woman who assisted me could not have been kinder. Because my literal "between jobs" situation is so unique, and the new job will not offer health insurance, she was extremely helpful with walking me through the maze that is Affordable Healthcare and even navigated my account to explain key points and structures. It was most definitely not in her job description, and by far the nicest, most patient approach to customer service I have ever experienced. I was expecting a Medicaid-esque rep who would berate me for everything from quitting my last job with a 2 month gap to questioning my citizenship because my birth certificate is in another language. Not the case at all, and I would highly suggest those visiting to utilize the knowledge these insurance coordinators have. After that, you are sent back to the first floor to wait some more and meet with a counselor. This is where all the fun, invasive questions come in, and the option for HIV testing. The counselor was quick and to the point because she likely had a busload of people she had to see after me, but, nonetheless, professional and courteous. Some of these questions are not easy to ask, and she was clear that an answer was not necessary if I was uncomfortable. Finally, there was another wait for the actual nurse practitioner who conducted the exam. I saw Bita, who was just lovely. She was the least judgmental, most informative health professional I've yet to see. I highly recommend her, if there is any choice in who you're able to get in with. She conducted the exam quickly, she made the breast exam as unawkward as possible (no easy feat, all things considered), and the pre- and post-questions were asked in an open and understanding manner. Not to sound like a broken record, but this clinic and its staff was far friendlier than any other GYN I have ever visited, The overall visit took close to 2.5 hours, but for low-cost/free wellness exams that cover everything to ensure you are healthy in the reproductive area, it was honestly worth it. I would highly recommend this center to any woman who is in need of an exam, testing or counseling. Well done, Planned Parenthood.

Yelp
I can't speak highly enough of this PP. Everyone I saw was so kind, supportive, and non-judgmental. They genuinely want everyone to feel safe and helped. They were very timely and organized and the place itself is clean and has a nice energy. Thank you to everyone here

Yelp
STAY AWAY! I came here with my boyfriend to get tested. We had done this once before a few years ago somewhere else. It was a much easier procedure back then and it used to be FREE! We came to this spot and were greeted by the must rude people who clearly hate their jobs. The security guard acted like we had bombs on us. Jeez...it's just Planned Parenthood people. This ain't a Stop n Frisk! BUT the worst part was the receptionist, as another reviewer had commented previously, was spewing with attitude! She acted like we were idiots for not having an appointment and refused to help us together. She talked down to my boyfriend and told him to go "sit down" very curtly as she needed to deal with us both on our own.. She rolled her eyes at us. And gave me this ghetto fab attitude -- for what? I have no idea! We wanted to get tested together at the same time so when I asked her if we could make an appointment together she reluctantly was like "OK". She was trying to deal with us one by one but it was totally illogical and dumb cause we had to sync schedules and pick a time that worked for both of us. She was just awwwwfuuuuulllll! Then, we come back to get our tests and we walk in and are greeted by the same nasty receptionist. She asks for our insurance cards and then asks for photos IDs... I'm like "oh why do we need ID?" and she's like "girl you need to listen to directions". I can't ask a question? And what didn't I listen to? I had my photo ID right there. She was just incredibly aggressive and nasty. She also made some comment that I overheard "I wish my job was that easy" as she and her friend grilled me.. I'm not sure if they were jealous that I looked cute? Not sure what they were implying...but I know I didn't like it! CUSTOMER SERVICE IS A ZERO. And then, there is a $50 co-pay! Come on, really!!?! Fine. I will NEVER come back to this location. Planned Parenthood, thank you for what you do, but please hire competent folks that will greet people with a smile instead of a nasty mean attitude and aren't your supposed to be affordable!?!?

Yelp
OK, so before I begin my review I should mention that I totally support Planned Parenthood and its mission. That being said, I've never had a negative experience at a PP. I first started going to the one at Boro Hall, but after I made my online appointment this time, I got scheduled at the Bleecker Street location for my annual check-up. My appointment was at 8:45 AM Saturday. I went with one of my guy friends because we wanted wanted to hang out later so he came with me. Of course all the religious nutso protesters thought we were aborting our love-child together instead of me getting my annual check-up. As we're walking to the building, a couple of women accosted my friend, trying to shove pamphlets in his face-I guess to save us from the sin of my pap smear. After we were safely shuttled in by the pink-vested Planned Parenthood volunteers, both of us got our bags checked. I don't really get people complaining about the grumpy security. I mean, I guess they weren't exceedingly polite, but when are security guards ever that nice? Anyways, they made my friend sit in the "guy" waiting room while I went in the patient waiting room and filled out some forms. After that I saw the nurse, who I didn't like too much. First of all, after she weighed me she told me my weight without asking if I wanted to hear it. As someone who has struggled with her eating in the past, I thought it would have been more considerate if she had asked whether or not I had wanted to hear how much I weighed. She also asked how I would react if I was HIV positive after she swabbed my mouth...my answer was "Um, probably not good." No duh. However, the doctor I had was really great. Totally friendly when she did my pap and answered any questions I had. Also explained to me what she was doing as she did it and made me feel as comfortable as possible. Besides the rather unhelpful nurse/ PA /whatever she was, I had a really good visit and the same goes for the other times I have been to PP at Boro Hall as well. On a side note, as my friend and I were exiting, I guess the protesters had had more time to assemble and by the time we were walked out, there was a full on cohort of (no joke) monks and priests in full-on monk garb across the street singing Gregorian chants and holding a huge wooden cross and a picture of Jesus. As we walked out the monks started praying the Hail Mary in unison. My friend said they should save their breath for someone else who wasn't as for gone as we were. Haha. But really...their chanting and praying was what prompted me to write this review since I thought it was hilarious, yet at the same time reminded me that we shouldn't take access to affordable ob/gyn car for granted.

Yelp
After two of my coworkers suggested this place I figured it was worth a shot. I got what I wanted. My doctor was very informative. My insurance covered my visit. It took me 1hr 10mins from appointment time to the time I left. Note: ~If you have the time, I would suggest making the appointment online. Their phone lines are busy. You just give them a time frame (certain day to certain day) a time preference (two choices; ie: early morning, mid day, afternoon, etc) and wait a day or two. You'll receive an appointment; just one time and date (not two or three options now, just one) ~Security at Planned Parenthood will bag check (as in go through your bag) and have you walk through a metal detector. ~I would suggest bringing your own pen. You'll need to fill out a few forms in different areas. ~When the receptionist ask you "if you have an appointment?" and you say "yes", tell her you have insurance. *I wasn't asked about whether or not I add insurance so it added 10 minutes to my wait time. ~I was told the best time to go was in the morning when there aren't too many people before you. Process: 1. Schedule an appointment. 2. Don't bring sharp objects or mace; bag check and metal detector walk through. 3. Walk through another two doors, see the receptionist. 4. Give her your ID (and maybe insurance card) 5. Have a seat in the general waiting area 6. When your name is called go back up to the receptionist table and you'll receive your ID and a clip board with basic information you need to fill out. They have pens available at their desk. 7. Go back to the general waiting area, fill out your paperwork and return it to the receptionist desk to drop off clip board and forms. 8. Your name will be called again, but this time you'll be told to head to a certain window, this is where you'll pay for your visit. ***The lady at Window #1 informed me that I should have given my coverage to the "them." I assume "them" was the receptionist. I was never asked if I had insurance, just whether or not I had an appointment. I wasn't sure on their procedure so I didn't ask. If you ask the receptionist, you might be able to cut off 10-15 minutes before going to pay. Window #1 Lady took my insurance card & ID and asked me to sit back down. After 10-15 minutes in the general waiting area my name was called back again. (I didn't owe anything) 9.Window lady will give you a folder with the typical OB questionnaire and you'll be directed to another waiting area. 10. Take a seat in the other waiting area, fill out your paper work, and wait for you name to be called. This time from a nurse 11. The nurse I got was very nice (I wish I got her name) what I didn't finish on my form she just asked me in person and check the appropriate boxes. This is the place where you specify what you're there to receive (birth control, yearly, etc) She then sends you back to your waiting area. ***Because my last "monthly visit" was past the world's "normal" time frame I was told to go upstairs to take a prego test...just protocol. This shaved off another 10-15 minutes. 12. The doctor herself will come out and call for you; I had Dr.Kane. She was nice, answered my questions, and told me what was going to happen before doing it. This I find makes a HUGE difference. Poking and prying in silence is creepy. After that, you're on your way! Why the 4 out of 5? This is just based on the time frame it took, but (i assume) that can not be helped, it is after all a clinic so they see a lot of people. They have a great system, well organized, and you don't stay in any one place for more then 10 minutes.

Yelp
5 stars for this place still standing tall in ChristoFascist Murkkka. -1 star for some of the questionable stuff that goes on here, mainly in a financial capacity. Like the friend who came here for free birth control all through high school, only to be billed for all of it once she hit 18. I once called to find out how much a routine Well Woman exam would cost sans health insurance, only to find out, without being asked for my income info, that they wanted to charge me almost $200. Oh, and apparently it's their policy not to give out condoms or any of the other "complimentary" goodies without an appointment. Not so "complimentary" then, are they? I think a lot of this stuff has to do with the fact that they have volunteers working there, and can easily be rectified by asking to talk to a supervisor. But it has to be said. Be very careful about finding out CORRECT costs, policies, etc before you schedule anything. Oh, and also, it would be REALLY REALLY BAD if RU486 were available free to teenage girls. Because it's a dangerous chemical abortifacient, available by prescription only and administered in a doctor's office for VERY GOOD REASONS. Tori is probably referring to the Morning After Pill / Plan B, which is not by any means the same thing as RU486 and does not cause abortions at all. It's just an ultra-powerful concentrated birth control pill that does what the normal pill does -- prevent you from ovulating and thus having an egg there to meet up with the sperm. It's basically an "ooops, do over!" pill. Not an abortion. It's available over the counter in New York State, and should totally be handed out free to anyone who wants it.

Yelp
The staff here is kind and amazing, but let's just say the security guard probably used to work at a high security prison by the way he talks to you.

Yelp
On the one hand, I am very pro Planned Parenthood. This is the clinic that connected me with my adoption agency when I chose to place my baby for adoption, and on that visit they were very kind and compassionate. On the other hand: they advertise themselves as being a resource if you need contraceptive services but have no money, and that is simply not true, or at least it wasn't for me. They failed to tell me that my existing health insurance made me ineligible for their financial aid, but still made me an appointment. I took time off from work and came in, only to find out that an IUD would still be nearly $300, when the whole reason I was looking at PP was because a friend of mine had gotten hers at PP for free. When I found this out, I started to cry. I had been going back and forth between my insurance provider and my OBGYN for months, trying to find a way to be able to afford an IUD, and this was the last straw. When I finally was able to speak to a supervisor, she was very condescending and left the room the minute she could see I was about to start crying again. PP does incredible amounts of good, but a) I was told incorrect information about whether I'd be eligible for financial aid, and b) this supervisor had no compassion. Bless Planned Parenthood but fuck these employees.

Yelp
I fully support Planned Parenthood and everything they stand for and support. I come here every three months to get my Depo injection, and I'm impressed by their services. I'm never here for more than 45 minutes (unheard of at a clinic!), and most everyone is very nice and pleasant and helpful (although the security staff is notoriously grumpy). My one big gripe is with a particular nurse-practitioner here. She's very sweet and knowledgeable, but she ALWAYS comments on my weight. I'm well within healthy limits (I'm 5'4" and weigh between 120-125 pounds), but my weight fluctuates and she always says something. One time, she said to me, "Now, it looks like you've gained 13 pounds since your last visit - can you explain that?" Horrified, I couldn't - I didn't even see what difference it made to me getting my shot anyway, but geez, 13 pounds, but my clothes still fit the same -so the next day I called my regular doctor, who I had been seeing regularly for the previous few months and asked her to look up my weight records. According to her, I had actually lost three pounds in the same three-month period that the nurse practitioner insisted I had gained weight during. Anyway, on my next visit, she looked at my weight and said, "Oh, you lost six pounds! Great job!" Uh, I wasn't aware I had been trying to lose weight. Where does this lady get off commenting on my weight fluctuations? Mind your own business! Plus, I don't trust their weighing for a damn - how accurate could their reading be, when they're taking it at 5pm and I've been eating and drinking all day, and I'm fully clothed and in shoes, etc? Fortunately this past time, I had a different nurse-practitioner who didn't ask me about my weight or make any comments about it. She did stab me with the needle pretty hard. I like coming here; it's clean, relatively convenient, and inexpensive. They don't take my particular insurance, but my bill never costs more than $60, so that's fine with me.

Yelp
I am shocked by some of the negative reviews of this clinic - seriously, people are surprised and upset that there is a security guard at the entrance? Yes, there is security - and thank goodness! Have you never heard of crazy anti-choice extremists bombing abortion clinics? I for one was quite happy to have to step through a metal detector and have my purse searched. Also, you can't just walk in and expect them to automatically give you services for free. If you need financial assistance, they have a screening process and you may very well qualify for reduced cost or free services - but you have to meet with a counselor and bring the required documents (which is really not that big a deal, how can you complain about having to do a little paperwork when you are getting something for FREE?). And if you do get services or BC for free or reduced-rate, please consider donating money to "give back" if you are ever at a point later in your life when you are able to! The staff was very helpful and friendly - yes, you have to wait longer than you would at a private doctor's office, but that's because you can come here without a referal, without insurance, sometimes without the ability to pay at all, and so naturally they receive a much higher volume of patients. All of the doctors I have seen here were very professional and friendly - I actually preferred my experience at Planned Parenthood over all my past experiences at the gyno I used to go to back when I had insurance. I came here for an annual, and told the doctor I had been considering getting an IUD sometime in the future... She was so positive and so informative about it that we ended up scheduling an appointment for me to come back and get one as soon as possible (my previous gyno had told me she would have to refer me to another doctor for the procedure!). And my IUD insertion appointment was just as positive an experience - the doctor who did it was very patient and explained everything as she was doing it, taking care to make sure I felt comfortable and answering all the questions I had. I also didn't have to wait weeks for an appointment like other people have complained about... I created an account on their website to schedule an appointment, and got one 5 days later. You can also check your lab test results on the website, instead of waiting for them to call you, which I think is pretty awesome. I recommend Planned Parenthood to everyone I know, and cannot praise them highly enough. We are so incredibly fortunate to have a place like this - don't ever take it for granted! And seriously, donate money to them if you are ever able to.

Yelp
The staff here seems to be hit or miss. Some are extremely accommodating and polite, others are curt and nasty. The advisors on hand are much in the same vein. They have good intentions, but I definitely knew more about birth control methods in 5th grade than some of these "counselors" do today. The doctors are exceptional, polite and gracious though. Especially considering the range of work they perform here. Despite the grungy waiting area, the facilities are clean and Planned Parenthood is a good option if you are in need of birth control and have no insurance. So sad to see some of the uneducated, misguided and poor girls that come through the doors for "procedures" as they call them. (Many who have written barely legible reviews on this page). It's very unfortunate that so many of them don't learn from their previous mistakes. I overheard many in the waiting area who were there for a second, third or fourth abortion. No matter what your moral views are, that is NOT a routine procedure or a method of birth control. Learn from your mistakes! Better education of the staff should be enforced and passed on to these women. I appreciate their mission as a whole though.

Yelp
Yes. Yes. Yes. Thank you, Dr. Heather Goodchild. I didn't think I would ever trust a medical professional again before I saw you. Best pap smear ever. I can't recommend Planned Parenthood enough. If you're looking for a doctor who will listen to you, go here. Compassion, kindness, warmth. I'm so happy I went here.

Yelp
I went to planned parenthood for a wellness checkup and birth control. It was easy and uncomplicated and a lovely experience. I had an appointment and was seen right away (despite being in the middle of Snowpocalypse 2016) and sent from one floor to another with remarkable efficiency. I've waited a lot longer at the fancy private clinics and still haven't been treated as well. What really stood out to me, however, was the incredible kindness and compassion of everyone there from the security guard to the amazing CNM who gave my my birth control. The intake nurse told me about her BC experience, the financial aid interviewer was kind beyond words. The whole experience made me so grateful that such a phenomenal facility is available to the women of NYC. I wouldn't go anywhere else for a GYN checkup now and I'm generally blown away by the kindness I received here. Thank you Coleen and Daisy and the amazing team at PP. You're an inspiration.

Yelp
Like many, I work a job that does not currently offer a health plan. It sucks, but it's a reality that many of us live with. When I get sick, most times I find myself trying to self medicate with over the counter medicines and praying to God that my fever or cough or sore throat or whatever the hell it is will just go away because I can't afford to go see a doctor without insurance. But, at least I can see my gynecologist without a second thought about how much it's going to cost. The people who work here are extremely helpful and worked with me to fill out the financial aid forms that got me FREE (that's right, free!)services, examinations and prescriptions for a year. Since I spend so much time neglecting my well being in all the other areas that I have no coverage in, it's nice to not have to worry about at least one aspect of my health. Sure, there may be the occasional rude employee. But honestly, I have yet to encounter any. Everybody I've met has been friendly and helpful. When I was with the doctors and nurses, I felt like they actually cared. When I call them to ask questions, I never get the brush off and they always assist me as best they can. Would I prefer to see a doctor closer to my home with less patients who offered a shorter wait time when I need to make an appointment? Sure. But, I feel like I'm getting quality care for the grand price of $0 and for now, that's more than enough for me.

Yelp
Planned Parenthood is so needed in this country. They help countless women and girls to be healthy and to manage their own reproductive health. Planned parenthood provides HIV education, HOV screenings and vaccinations, PAP smears, breat exams and all sorts of contraceptive education. I support Planned Parenthood, and if you are a women, and want to make sure your daughters have safe, low-cost access to medical care you should support them, too.

Yelp
As much as I understand the need for Planned Parenthood in our world... and I really would like to support what they do... but why, why why are there so many rude staff members at this location? I have had 3 visits over the years here. They leave me feeling like I have done something wrong just by coming in and caring for my basic health needs. Rude security, phone personnel and medical practitioners. (But then there are some stellar people too... sadly they get out shined by the rude ones.) Seeing a gyno is scary for some women, even for regular check ups. I wish they would treat individuals with more respect and care.
