My mother has a great green thumb, and I knew that she would love a terrarium. I decided to buy one for her for Christmas, but did not want to buy such a delicate gift in California, and fly it with me on an airplane to Texas. I decided to wait until arriving in Austin and to look for one locally. I wasn't sure where to start in my search for the perfect terrarium gift, so I Yelped "terrarium" in the Austin area. I was excited to see Slavonk & Hortus as one of the first links to appear.
I was intrigued by Keri's story, and I liked everything I read on her website. I learned that she used to be a barista at a local coffee shop and sold her terraria there, and also worked for a florist. With the help of family, she was able to go out on her own and start her local business, which helps to support her and her adorable son. The Austin community is lucky that she did! What a little gem this place is!
The shop is closed on Mondays, so I called on the Tuesday before Christmas Eve, to be sure the shop would be open. She told me they were opening at noon, so I made the drive all the way down from the Cedar Park area to the S&H shop down off Slaughter and I35. It was worth the drive. Keri had warned me that the selection in the shop would be limited because they had sold so many terraria for the holidays, but she said that she could make me anything I wanted once I arrived in the store.
I selected a medium table-top piece of glassware with a flat bottom, and Keri helped me to fill it with soil, sand and succulents. For a color theme, we chose bright red pebbles, black-and-white zebra snail shells, and glossy green cats-eye stones. It was perfection, and custom-designed. I couldn't be happier! This particular terrarium was a hundred times better than any ready-made ones, because this one was designed specially for the colors in my mother's kitchen. I'll post a picture so you can see Keri's impeccable work. Keri can do the same for any customer: just to tell her the color scheme or the character theme you'd like, and she will work her magic and give you the terrarium of your dreams.
Additional tips:
--For some reason, the Yelp address will take you to north Austin. This is incorrect. Instead, put the shop's address on Google Maps, and you will make it there! From north Austin, I took !-35 south, exited Slaughter west, and then went south on Manchaca.
--Have an idea of the shape, color scheme, and level of plant care that you're looking for. The more specific you can be with Keri, the better your terrarium will turn out.
--Check in on Yelp once you're ready to pay, for 25% off! That is no small savings, my friend! The Yelp coupon is only available in-store, not for phone orders or delivery.
--Keri has an an incredible assortment of glassware, so get creative! The coolest thing I saw was a lightbulb! Yes, Keri can even make a terrarium from a lightbulb!
--You're going to fall in love with Keri's work. Be prepared to buy your gifts, but treat yourself too!
--The website says that S&H terraria are available at Whole Foods, but if you can make it to the actual shop, I encourage you to do so! You'll get a chance to meet Keri, who is kind and genuinely interested in her clients' satisfaction, you can also ask for a custom-designed terrarium, and you'll feel great about supporting this small local business!
