Playa Cativo Lodge

"Opened in 2014. What? A lavish hideaway in an unspoiled paradise is what awaits guests at this ultra-private resort, where well-appointed living quarters are bordered by 35,000 acres of the biologically diverse Piedras Blancas National Park—some of the last remaining stretches of undisturbed lowland rainforest in Central America. Get me there now! SANSA and Nature Air operate daily, domestic commercial flights within Costa Rica, then it’s a 55-minute hop to one of two local ports of entry to Playa Cativo. The secluded resort is accessible only by a 25-minute scenic boat ride into the heart of the rainforest."

My partner and I visited Playa Cativo Lodge in August during the back half of our Costa Rica trip. We truly had the best experience. Everything from the room and the environment, to the rain, the boat ride to reach the property, and each meal, this trip was perfect. Also, the staff completely made our visit, so friendly and attentive.||The connection between wildlife, nature, and serenity is unmatched. During our whale watching tour, we were able to spot several groups of dolphins and the most breathtaking views of humpback whales that I could ever imagine. ||A must-go, especially for a relaxing second half to a hiking trip!|Already planning my next visit!

We had a wonderful stay at Playa Cativo. Our cabin was amazing with a really perfect ocean view. Very private and peaceful. Every meal was outstanding and all of the staff were welcoming and kind. Our guided snorkeling and birdwatching trips were very memorable. Would definitely stay here again.

I had the absolute best time at Playa Cativo. Everything was seamless from the booking process - which we booked directly with them - all the way to leaving and catching our flight back to San Jose. My boyfriend and I usually do aggressive travel, so I was afraid of spending 4 nights in one place - but wow was I wrong. I could’ve stayed for so much longer, we still had so much we wanted to do! It is now one of our favorite places in the world and cannot wait to go back. ||Service: I know it’s their job to make our experience the best, but I truly felt each staff member at Playa Cativo was excited to make our vacation unforgettable. Each excursion we went on had a guide you could tell was extremely passionate about the wildlife, nature, and Costa Rica. Every waiter seemed to be having the best day, excited to bring you farm-fresh food. And the activity coordinators felt eager to craft your perfect day. Truly world-class customer service. ||Food: Given the remote location, all meals are at the lodge - thankfully! You can tell the chef isn’t doing this just as a job, but they have a deep love of food. The presentation was incredible at each and every meal, which just enhanced the already beautiful environment. Each meal was incredibly delicious, and the variety made me never want to leave. They were accommodating and did the little things to make us feel special. You might book the lodge for the location, activities, and incredible rooms, but the food is a major highlight! We did a farm tour one of our first few days to really appreciate everything we were eating. ||Rooms: We stayed in a casita with an outdoor bathroom and absolutely loved it. Bugs etc. were not an issue for us, and we got a great view of frogs and crabs at night in the plunge pool! I thought I would miss my a/c but between the ocean breeze and the rain to cool it down most afternoons the temperature was perfect for sleeping. I especially loved the hammock on the balcony for reading and napping. The bed also was comfortable. ||Amenities: Between paddle boarding, yoga each morning, the spa on location, the hiking trails, and all the excursions offered we were never bored. The dolphin tour and the kayaking through the mangroves were top notch. Also just being so remote you don’t have to worry about any crowds. It feels like you get paradise all to yourself. We also did no-phone days to fully enjoy everything. No need for a phone in a place so beautiful and fun!

Playa Cativo Lodge is the perfect place to disconnect, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature. From the moment you arrive, the warm and friendly staff make you feel completely at home. The food is outstanding, with fresh, flavorful dishes that showcase local ingredients.||The location is simply breathtaking—nestled in the jungle with direct access to a pristine beach. Everywhere you look, the sights and sounds of nature create a peaceful and calm atmosphere, perfect for recharging your mind and spirit.||A truly special place for anyone looking to unwind, explore, and experience the best of Costa Rica.

One of the most important things for me when traveling is feeling truly seen and cared for, not just as a guest, but as a person. Playa Cativo exceeded that in every way.||As a mother, it means the world to find a place where my daughter is not only welcomed but celebrated. From the moment we arrived, the staff made sure every detail was taken care of. Our daughter was never treated as a disruption on the contrary, she was made to feel special, curious, and free to explore.||We’re deeply grateful for the experience we had as a family. Every tour we took was memorable watching whales and dolphins, listening to the birds right outside our room, and enjoying all the thoughtful activities Playa Cativo offers.||It’s not just a beautiful destination, it’s a place where families can connect, discover, and feel truly at home in nature.

The best way to describe Playa Cativo is as an experience. From the moment we were greeted and guided to the transfer boat, we felt genuinely welcomed.||Our stay at Playa Cativo exceeded every expectation. We’re deeply grateful to each member of the staff every single person made us feel uniquely cared for. We especially appreciated how they addressed us by name and anticipated our every need with such attention and kindness.||Playa Cativo is a one of a kind destination for those seeking tranquility, connection with nature, and exceptional service. The rooms are thoughtfully designed, the surroundings are breathtaking, and the sense of peace is unmatched.||Don’t hesitate to plan your next adventure here it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression.

An absolute amazing resort. You will not be disappointed. Infact, you will be blown away. A slice of heaven hidden at the foot of the bay, hidden in the jungle. The staff is amazing. The food is incomparable to almost any other resort. The chef is amazing. Accommodations are beautiful. We will be back!

Playa Cativa Lodge gave me something I didn't know that I was looking for: deep peace, intentional connection, and space to just be. From the time I stepped off the boat, I felt like I had entered into another world that was vibrant, untouched, and completely disconnected from the usual noise of life.||I left with a full heart and calm mind. I will definitely be back.
