The Essential Guide to Rio San Juan, Dominican Republic

"An intimate collection of artfully designed beachfront bungalows, this boutique hotel combines colorful Caribbean style with Palm Beach design—antique furniture, handmade tiles, and ornate Dominican-inspired architecture by owner-designer Celerie Kemble give it a singular character. With just nine intimate bungalows, each featuring private verandas and copper soaking tubs, the property truly feels like a home-away-from-home. I also recommend the main restaurant in the stately main house for its farm-to-table ethos, showcasing fresh fish and seafood alongside classic Dominican dishes available all day." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. This Remote Collection of Bungalows in the Dominican Republic Is a Beach-Lover’s Catnip - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"Tucked along a remote stretch of the Dominican Republic’s north coast, this powdery-sand beachfront retreat began as a private pied-à-terre conceived by designer Celerie Kemble and financier Boykin Curry and was later opened to travelers. Dominican Victorian architecture—bright whites, sorbet hues, hip roofs, triple gables and delicate patterned woodworking (tragaluz)—gives the clustered bungalows a storybook, gingerbread-house feel as they sit secluded amid lush jungle. Interiors channel Palm Beach garden whimsy with richly layered textures and vintage finds: standalone copper bathtubs, light fixtures fashioned from dried fruits, wicker daybeds and a tactile back bar made from a seashell mosaic. The Great Room serves as the social heart (dining, lounge and bar) and is complemented by a library with an evening bar and ocean views; meals are centered there but poolside shrimp tacos and a frosty Presidente can easily be delivered. The kitchen-forward bungalows (one- to three-bedroom options, nine total) include full kitchens and wraparound porches, while a lap pool below the Great Room sits flanked by latticed cabanas and lounge chairs with built-in drink shelves, leading directly to a private stretch of sand. The menu focuses on fresh Caribbean ingredients—standout snacks include a rotating chips-and-guacamole (chips made some days from plantains, others from a local root) and cocktails built from fresh lime, cane sugar and garden herbs. Nearby adventures include zip-lining into Dudu Lagoon, hiking and horseback riding (ask a guide to find a fallen passion fruit), and practical details include bespoke on-property bath products scented “Lime Salt,” recommended in-bungalow massages paired with the copper tubs, and a roughly 1.5-hour drive from Puerto Plata airport."

The Playa Grande Beach Club is a resort retreat located on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic; this unique jewel box of a hotel stands out as one of the most beautiful accommodations in the region. For travelers seeking a tranquil and calming escape, I highly recommend this boutique hotel. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, providing a sense of luxury and relaxation. The highlight for many is the exquisite copper bathtub, a luxurious feature that adds a touch of indulgence to the stay. Additionally, the thoughtful design elements throughout the hotel elevate the entire experience, creating an ambiance of refined elegance. From the moment you arrive, the hotel's charm and beauty captivate you, offering a serene retreat that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether seeking a romantic getaway, a peaceful solo retreat, or a rejuvenating escape with loved ones, this boutique hotel provides the perfect setting for a memorable stay. In conclusion, for those in search of a tranquil and luxurious oasis in the Dominican Republic, this boutique hotel on Playa Grande Beach is a hidden gem that promises both comfort and sophistication. With its spacious rooms, captivating design elements, and serene ambiance, it's an ideal choice for a restful and rejuvenating escape.

An incredible place full of charm. Everything is thought through so carefully with beautiful decor, surroundings and a stunning beach. The food and service is fantastic and it feels incredibly welcoming. Also great facilities: the tennis court and jungle around it are immaculately maintained. My only suggestion is to improve your website: it doesn't currently capture the elegance of the place and so may put people off.

Service was top class, very friendly people. The pool was beautiful, the overall green area of the complex was astonishing. But the rooms? It was like a dream, they had that classic feel, where you could easily connect with the nature and enjoy the view. Lovely, relaxing and beautiful are three words that perfectly define this complex. I'm counting the days to come back, loved it. 5/5, I highly recommend it.
