The Best Beaches in Puerto Rico Still Feel Like a Secret | Vogue

"Known for its blue-gradient waters, this beach on Vieques is one of the most idyllic snorkeling spots in Puerto Rico thanks to calm, clear water, schools of colorful fish in grass beds, and multiple reef systems; it sits within the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, which helps protect the ecosystem. Practical amenities include restrooms and trash bins at the entrance and gazebos for post-snorkel snacks." - Nicole Kliest

Yelp
My wife, two teenage sons (17 yrs, 15 yrs), and I drove to and enjoyed the natural splendor of Chiva Beach #7 and #8. This is where you can see and experience the light blue of the Caribbean Sea in the national wildlife refuge. Its location on federal land means that it's undeveloped and very clean. I liked the gentle waves with some tiny seashells. We did not have time to explore all the multiple stops on Chiva - but it has over 20 different locations where you can stop. My understanding is sections #18-#21 have stronger waves (and may be more scenic), but that's just being nit-picky as the entire section of the wildlife refuge is spectacular. This is a family-friendly beach where you can bring the cooler and beach chairs for a few hours! Would say that Chiva Beach #7 and #8 is probably one of our top 2 beaches (along with Media Luna / Sun Bay) for children who prefer calmer waves for swimming. You'll want to take pictures here to remember the experience!

Yelp
La Chiva was the first beach we visited while in Vieques. I cannot even describe it's beauty and peacefulness. White sands, turquoise water, calm waves, beautiful Palmetto trees.....heavenly! The best part was having it to ourselves for several amazing hours until just a few more people showed up. What an incredible way to start a vacation in Vieques. Pack a lunch, pack some snorkel gear, and pack some beer because you'll want to stay all day at this pristine Caribbean paradise!

Yelp
Great beach to visit it's in a national park as you go down the long road leading to the beach there are lots of horses and animals you may see is definitely keep driving down because the water is more blue you drive down this long road to different sections which are labeled and provide parking I was at beach #9 we parked are car (which didn't get stuck, I was worried because of the sand but it's shallower than you look so you'll be fine!) the beach is really beautiful. It's not the bluest beach you'll find and definitely bring some snorkelers and bug spray. I don't burn but I'd bring some some sunscreen if you do. It's really worth it. The farther you go the bluer it gets amd there's little picnic tables with shade too but I'd also bring some beach chairs. Your gonna wanna stay the whole Day so bring some snacks and a cooler for some fresh beer! It's amazing view just clean up after yourself for the wild life.

Yelp
Wow. The sand is soft as silk. The beach is clean. The water is as clear as glass. Two of our party went snorkeling out towards the island and got to see a lot of cool fish, barracuda, sing rays. This beach is beautiful.

Yelp
In A Nutshell: -Blue Beach was recently ranked as the 14th Most Beautiful Beach in the world by Conde Nast. -This beach sums up the island of Vieques perfectly: isolated, calm & beautiful water. -You take a bumpy road through the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. -It's possible to take a scooter here, I did it. -There are only 21 tiny turn-offs that allow you to access this beach. -You get total privacy, breath-taking views and QUIET. Overall, this is a great beach FAR AWAY from tourists!

Yelp
What would you wish for if you were stranded on a deserted Island? Beautiful Scenery? Hot & Sunny Weather? Cool, Clear, & Blue Waters? Well, you don't have to imagine too hard about being on a deserted island on Bahia La Chiva (aka Blue Beach). This long stretch of coastline will give you your own personal paradise. At just a few steps from your parking spot, you can easily have your secluded paradise. This was my favorite beach on Vieques. It didn't get the good press as other beaches (such as Secret [http://www.yelp.com/biz/secret-beach-pata-prieta-vieques#hrid:WgacGlsPGt6b8PmVqH83_Q ] & Red [http://www.yelp.com/biz/red-beach-playa-caracas-vieques#hrid:ZFCIdzIBlQ6FLVox6HDrHQ ]), but I think this stretch of sand and water was my favorite. The Beach is massive, and there is a road which parallels the coast line, but you wouldn't know that by the vegetation between the road and water. On the road, we noticed side roads every few hundred feet (each with a numbered sign, such as "8", "7", "6", etc.). On a whim, and out of curiosity, we tried one of the first side routes we found. Unfortunately, the bogs of muddy water were too much for our little scooter, and we were turned away; we found this same result on a second turn out, too. But then on a later road, we only had to drive a few hundred feet, and there we were. Face to face with the cool Caribbean. As we walked a few paces to the beach, we came across a dwarf/baby palm tree. I plopped my beach towel here, and proclaimed this patch of sand the new Country of Corey. This was our most secluded beach of our Vieques Beach tour. The nearest people to us were several football fields away. There was a yacht just off shore, but it left after a while. There is a small tropical island a few hundred feet out---if I were daring (and a pirate), I would have swam out there in search of buried treasure. But there was plenty to do on this beach: lay down under the sun, read a book, listen to the rhythmic blue & white waves, swim in the refreshing cool waters. This beach has it all, and will be what I think about most when I think back on Vieques. A perfect 5-stars for this beach.

Yelp
I've been to so many beaches - from Hawaii, to Bermuda, this was hands down one of the best beaches I've ever been to. Super soft, powdery white sand. Clear blue waters. Fairly large sandbar. My only critique is that I wish there were fish or turtles to see. Bring chairs and towels because there are no rental or food stands. You need a car to get here, as taxi's won't go so far down the dirt road to get here. By car, directions are straightforward.

Yelp
The beach is a postcard. There is nothing more to say. Sit back, have a beer, snorkel and enjoy.

Yelp
Our driver, Jorge, took us here on our second beach day. We spent the first beach day at SunBay, which was gorgeous enough. But the moment we stepped out onto the white sand at Blue Beach, we were in awe. This beach is GORGGGGG. The waves were strong the day we went, but the water temperature was perfect. Be aware that there are no food stands or bathrooms on this beach. It's pure paradise. Oh, and there are sea turtles that lay their eggs there!!! Amazing.

Yelp
Love this beach!!! Check out the pictures they speak for themselves! We went on a week day in Feb and there were maybe 5-6 other people on the beach total. White sand, warm water, warm breeze. Just amazing! A couple of things to note. 1. You gotta rent a jeep to be able to get out there. 2. You can't taxi out there. There's no cel reception 3. This is a US state park but there are not rangers or staff around. 4. No services what so ever and the closest store is like an hour away. 5. See #4 bring everything you need 6. White sand, warm water, awesome place! This is on the Caribbean side of the island.

Yelp
Bahia de la Chiva/Blue Beach now shares the #1 spot in my book with Fernando do Soronha in Brazil !!! Miles and miles of green shallow clear waters then drops to the deep blue caribbean sea ! You can paddle board for miles then surf back to the shore -- and start all over again. Like Fernando do Soronha, there are no food/beverages vendors, so bring what you need. Rent a car (which costs $60/day - -expensive !!! --- or take any of the numerous taxis that line up along the ferry terminal. I paid $15 bucks one way and those drivers are so willing to do the pick up if you agree on a time. Mine did at 5pm on the dot, very friendly and even showed me how to do the batchata --- the island dance move !

Yelp
So many stickers on the beach and tons of seaweed. I am surprised the park doesn't maintain the areas. Oh well at least the view was nice.

Yelp
One of the best beaches on the island. I am an avid fisherman, and I like the kinds of beaches with rocky shorelines and lots of seaweed! With rocky shores, the fish stay close to the rocks so you can catch them without casting too far out! I loved fishing here for Snapper, Grouper, Squirrelfish, and an assortment of other fish! The beach also has great snorkeling, swimming, and general relaxation.

Yelp
Best beach on the island. Go down as far as you can before you park. Basically a private beach to yourself.

Yelp
Beautiful! We got a sweet spot under the coconut tree as wind was too strong for our beach umbrella. Water was just beautiful. It started gettimg a little crowded around 11a, but there were still enough places for all. We were happy for our water shoes as sand was rough with sea shells. Getting here was super easy, granted we had a jeep. Remember to leave nothing in the car and keep the doors unlocked!! No reason to risk ruining a vacation over petty theft.

Yelp
We went to Chiva Beach #10 at the suggestion of the concierge at The W Hotel. Really beautiful spot. We visited during the off-season and we felt like we had the beach to ourselves. Only a couple other people. I did my meditation without any interruption. The water is shallow and clear and colorful and warm and... how do you describe this beautiful place? The beaches in this area are numbered. You will see little signs. #10 is a bit further down, which may have contributed to it being so quiet. I didn't visit any other beach on Vieques, But if you want to visit a beach on Vieques, I cannot imagine you will be unhappy with this one.

Yelp
While this beach was a little rockier and had more seaweed than other beaches, it has a bunch of secluded little spots, perfect for my husband and I to have a relaxing and romantic experience without babies or kids running around, loud music, etc. We did go into the water and it was wonderful! You can walk down the beach and snorkel at the tip. There are also shelters here. I suggest you go early, go as far down as you can, and even if you're not going to use the shelter, put your stuff there, because people came to try to take ours. We had a wonderful time here and it was our favorite!

Yelp
This is a lovely beach but a bit bigger and a bit more crowded compared to la plata and Pata Prieta a bit further down the road. Didn't have much luck snorkeling here. I think this a great beach to visit depending on how much time you have.

Yelp
We went to La Chiva after spending some time at Caracas to check it out based on all the glowing reviews. It is absolutely lovely and very secluded, but (at least when we were there) the strip of sand was quite narrow and there weren't many good shaded spots that weren't practically in the woods (with ants, thorns, etc). As others have said, I don't think Vieques has ANY bad beaches, and La Chiva was certainly beautiful, but we actually preferred Sun Bay Beach (our favorite - lots of lovely palm trees right on the sand for shade, as well as concessions and bathrooms) and Caracas (a bit smaller, but more accessible, easier parking, a bathroom, wider sand, and more space).

Yelp
This beach is our second favorite after Playa Sun Bay. Like all the beaches on the island, the sand here is white and soft, and the water is warm, shallow and blue. The vastness of this beach made it feel a little less intimate compared to the palm trees lining Playa Sun Bay but we still had a great time.

Yelp
This is my favorite beach ever! We first visited in March/April 2011 and we were the only people on the beach. Came back again in 2013 and there were a few more folks around but it was still very quiet. Pack some sandwiches, find a palm tree for shade, and there isn't a better way to spend a day.
