The 27 Best Things to Do in Mexico City

"Mexico's roving mariachi bands have been found in this plaza, a few blocks north of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, since the mid-1900s. Though the plaza has deteriorated over the years, it's seen a resurgence thanks to a city-driven effort to clean up the neighborhood by installing new sidewalks and street lamps. It's a cultural meeting point of sorts, where travelers can come day or night (though the best time to go is after 11 p.m.), to watch bands solicit bar patrons, cars, and passersby to buy a song." - Scarlett Lindeman

"Experience Live Mariachi Music in Mexico City They've been popularized and commercialized in movies and may even seem to be a cultural stereotype of sorts, but visit Mexico City 's Plaza Garibaldi on any given evening and you'll soon see that the tradition of mariachis is alive and well and very much a part of modern culture. Mariachis gather at Plaza Garibaldi nightly, waiting to be hired for an off-site event or an impromptu in-the-plaza serenade. You can even negotiate for a few songs yourself, or, if you prefer, sit in the plaza and watch the action as mariachis in a variety of outfits wait for work. Although Plaza Garibaldi has spiffed up a bit in recent years (particularly with the opening of the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal a few years ago), it does have a seedy underbelly. It's best not to bring your valuables, and if you enter one of the bars on the plaza's periphery, stay sober enough to keep your wits about you. A popular Garibaldi scam is to invite unsuspecting tourists to several rounds of drinks and then stick them with an astronomical bill."

Nice vibe. We went around noon and the plaza was pretty empty and quiet. 1 mariachi song 🎵 was 150 Mex pesos. We got orange 🍊 jus fresh squeezed for 60 pesos it was so delicious you have to try it. Nice vibe

Google
Lively and a fun place to visit, dance, and listen to Mariachi music. You can get a Mariachi band to serrate a song for about 15 US dollars. The plaza is located in a rough neighborhood, but there are a lot of police present. So, the place itself feels safe. There are lots of food vendors and restaurants. Highly recommend taking an Uber or taxi to an from the Plaza.

Plaza Garibaldi: A lively and iconic square in Mexico City, famous for its mariachi bands. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, delicious street food, and traditional music. However, be prepared for crowds and potential scams. A must-visit for a taste of authentic Mexican culture!

Google
Not worth the visit unless you go to a specific cantina like Tenampa. Smells like urine and homeless use the streets as toilets even when the police is near by. Has potential for improvement as a cultural area.

Google
This is a decent sized square with lots of mariachis around. The museum of tequila and mezcal is on the corner of the square. The surrounding area is not the safest, especially at night, so make sure to stick to the main road if you're walking.

Google
very lively place, with many restaurants and many mariachis, but the night in the surrounding area doesn't seem to be very safe.

Google
This is a fun place to experience live mariachi music. However, restaurants in this area tend to be overpriced, and there are many tourist traps to watch out for. In other words, while the music is enjoyable, be prepared to spend more than you might expect on food and be cautious about where you choose to eat or shop.

Google
Nice place to visit. The plaza is a historical site visited regularly by locals on almost every single weekend with live music and restaurants all around. The only drawback is the neighborhood. It's not recommended to go there alone but with groups there are no issues - just stick together. Also; never wear your jewelry anywhere in Mexico (that's a good rule for most countries that, of course, varies by city and areas).

Yelp
do not go to la martina. warning. this place completely charges for items that were not ordered. please double check receipts!!! additionally, this place promises you free entertainment/music and charges $50 pesos per person at the check out. do not go to la martina!! warn your family and friends. tourists stay far far away!!!!

Yelp
We visited this plaza because quite a few people recommended it. It's definitely a local area so we didn't see many tourists. Overall it was worth seeing but the mariachis are a little aggressive. Once you get a good spot to sit and have a drink they mostly leave you alone as long as they have someone else to sing to. The one thing that is a bit annoying is that they are constantly playing on top of each other so it gets VERY loud. We didn't make it to the tequila museum but it looked like it was worth it! This is not a very nice area so there were a lot of homeless people so it's probably a bit safer to go during the day.

Yelp
AVOID La Martina at all cost!!! They have guys come up to you for "free" shows but will add it to your tab at the very end!! Cash only! It was late at night so I have no choice but to hunt down an ATM. Best bet is to eat outdoors or avoid this place at all cost!

Yelp
Be aware on the Restaurant the overcharged and went they bring the bill you paid them and they change the bill and they said you paid less and they make you paid more .

Yelp
A lot of musicians trying to compete for your attention and tips. There are some restaurants with their own musicians but beware it will be pricey. We went to one named La Martina and the guy outside touted that the show was "free". You know where this is going...Anyway it was a great show, lasted two hours and your seats are around the stage and the mariachi band is set in the rear while the singer is center stage. Great singers and we would not have had a problem paying a fee to enter or at least being told that the tip is automatically added at nearly 40 %tip. Our bill was $150 US, with $40 being automatic tip. CASH ONLY. Glad we did this we had a real nice time and the singers and band were excellent. But I wouldn't go back. The plaza itself has a lot of vendors and there is a food hall as well.

Danny V.

Yelp
Plaza Garibaldi is nice, full of history. La Martina offered a dinner show with a 50 pesos door fee. Prices were reasonable, the show was nice but when the bill came, they charged a 1,600 pesos(100 US dollars) waitress fee. We paid a total of 256 dollars for 21 beers, 1 soda, 1 shot of tequila and two orders of nachos. They should charge more for the food and drinks and not surprise people with that waitress fee. Total buzzkill!!!!

Imelda V.

Yelp
Alerta!!!!!

Yelp
I have posted 2 reviews before today. The first two reviews were because I went to some places that were outstanding. Today I visited the famous Mariachi Plaza in Mexico City. I went to a spot called La Soldadita. I enjoyed the entertainment, that part was just fine. When the bill came they charged us an extra 200 pesos for the show that was supposed to be free. That in itself was bad enough. When I went to pay I gave the guy 500 pesos and within two seconds he gave it back to me as fifty pesos saying I did not pay him enough. Sometimes when you're a tourist in Mexico things like this happen I kind of expecte it. Just letting everybody else know that this place La Soldadita inside the plaza they'll get you. 1.7 1.7

Yelp
This is a must do when visiting Mexico. Come in a Friday Saturday or Sunday to be able to select from a variety of Mariachis!! We had an amazing time and did not need to go into any of the restaurants to hear them. You will have people come up to you to go to the restaurants for the shows, but honestly, save you money...stay out side and have some Mariachis play for you (unless you want to eat and watch a show)!! This is the second time we came here, our youngest daughter wanted to hear Mariachis so we came a bit early (they actually start around 1 an). They also have a Tequila museum which is free to get into and learn about the Mezcal. This is definitely a huge Mexican Touristic place and a bucket list to do.

Yelp
We came here in the early afternoon to check out the Tequila Museum and there wasn't many people. Definitely come back at night when it is a party. There were about 4 mariachi groups and they charge you per song. There are about 5 restaurants in the plaza and two of them appeared to have bars. You'll see the usual street vendors and people asking for money. I recommend walking here through the neighborhood as the main street is very busy. I don't recommend driving here as I didn't see any parking.

Yelp
I was visiting Mexico City for a week. Every activity I did was awesome except for this. Plaza Garibaldi is in a sketchy neighborhood so I asked my hotel if it was safe. They said it was, but later found out it isn't anymore. But I read the good reviews and decided to take a chance. The restaurants are pretty nice and the live music is authentic traditional mariachi. But the locals gave me stink eyes the whole night. They HATE foreigners here so be warned!!

Yelp
A great place to go for good music, dancing, drinks, and food. I could stay here all night listening to the mariachi music. Just a few words of caution: be aware of your surroundings, there's a lot of crime in the area, don't walk alone, & if you are taking a taxi, get a card from your hotel on which company to call so you can get a safe ride.

Yelp
Ay yi yi yi! Plaza Garibaldi! I am singing the praises of this plaza- this is a cool place for tequila and mariachi music! On this historic plaza, there are lots of mariachi players and even accordion players who just wander the square looking for someone to belt out a verse from La Bamba on, or to bellow out the Grito along with Volver, Volver! Ayyyyy yiii yii yi! On this square is the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal - a must see to learn about these magical elixirs! The flavors of Mexico all come together nicely in this historic plaza. The plaza is right down the street from the Bellas Artes, a few short blocks away. It seemed a bit dicey travelling through the area, as there was a few rough neighborhoods that we walked through, and later in the evening, more suspicious characters began to lurk around the plaza. Check it out during the day, when there's lots of people hanging out. There are a bunch of historic bars along here that are the home of Mariachi music, but I didn't manage to check out those places. The best place on the plaza seems to be the downstairs patio of the Tequila Museum...

Yelp
During the day it looks nice and there are plenty of restaurants to eat either inside or outside. But at night there are plenty of mariachis playing and you can hire one for any occasion. You can walk around and listen to a small group of mariachis or a large group. It is one of the places to come and visit when in Mexico City. Just do not walk very late at night towards the city. Walk towards the main avenue and take your transportation to where you are staying. If you go away from the main avenue it is not the best neighborhood at night.

Yelp
I doubt I could say anything new about this place. Mariachis, cheap drinks, pulque, and now a Tequila and Mezcal museum with a shop. I was there on a Saturday night, and it was jumping with people (including kids), roaming mariachis and vendors all vying for your pesos. The best way to experience it is to find a seat at one of the bars on the square (such as Amanacer Tapatio) order a pulque, beer, or cubana/michelada and watch the scene, listen to the mariachis. If you're lucky, some folks nearby will pay them to play, and you can enjoy it too. Odds are that you will hear the Mexican anthem Cielito Lindo at least once.

Marysol R.

Yelp
This place is by the edge of Tepito, which is literally "The Hood." It looks fun on the short strip of restaurants and Mariachi, but surrounded by preying thieves looking for vulnerable tourists. It would be nice if one Mariachi played a song at a time, but they don't. A bunch of Mariachi play over other Mariachi, on top of the restaurant music. In the end, it's a bunch of racket over racket. I couldn't even enjoy drinking music.
google avatar

Frances M.

Yelp
If you love mariachi music, go to Garibaldi. There are many restaurants, statues of famous singers like Juan Gabriel, a tequila museum and mariachis! The area is dicey, so don't go overboard on the drinks and always be aware of your surroundings.

Yelp
If you come to Mexico and you do not go to Plaza Garibaldi you are insane. This is one of Mexico's finest sights, visited by both locals and travelers. Here you can find the traditional Mariachi bands and enjoy a glass of Mezcal -- couldn't be better. The area is a little dodgy as the place is right in between downtown and Tepito (which is a urban slum). however since this place has many visitors, if you go with a friends or two you will be fine. The actual plaza has many police man and if you don't walk too far there won't be a problem. Usually locals come here to hire mariachis for a romantic serenade, or to sing "Las Mañanitas" on their birthday but you can get them to sing for you as many Mexican songs as you want. Average price/tip should be from 500-800 pesos depending on the band you choose. That is one tradition you cannot skip when in Mexico.
google avatar

Luis A.

Yelp
It was as expected, busy and full of all types of mexican bands (mariachi, ranchero, trio, etc) trying to convince you to rent them for a song or two. Very lively but I was a bit disappointed that many shops were closed making it seem that the plaza was in decline. I sincerely hope that this is not the case and this historic tradition does not die.
