This park is a beautiful, shaded retreat with massive trees and plenty of seating, making it an ideal spot to relax. I walked through on a Saturday and it was alive with a charming little market where you can browse everything from classic souvenirs to unique local antiques. In my view, it’s the perfect place for someone to enjoy a slow morning - especially with the mix of history and local culture on display.

Plaza de la Constitución (formerly Plaza Matriz, but still commonly known as such) is one of the top historic, beautiful and memorable civic spaces in Montevideo. For visitors to the City it is one of the must-see places, together with a stroll along the pedestrian street, Sarandí, toward the Plaza Zabala. An appropriate point of arrival and departure for exploration of the many interesting things to see/experience in the Ciudad Vieja.

🏛️🏛️🏛️🏛️🏛️ It is a HISTORICAL SQUARE, THE OLDEST PARK OS MONTEVIDEO founded 1726, two years after the founding of the city. It was the center of community life of the city. Then in 1851, the park had a face lift with the planting of trees and design of footpaths. Construction of a pipeline to pump water from Santa Lucia and building followed in 1868. In 1871, water appeared in the park and was inaugurated that year. The fountain is a beautiful functional structure. There are 3 tiers of basin, each with carved griffins. 🏛️ The central post has emblazoned several symbols including the National Coat of Arms of Uruguay. 🏛️🏛️🏛️ The sides of main basin are important dates about history of Uruguay like the date of the ratification of the constitution and date of the Declaration of Independence of the Republica Oriental del Uruguay.

Good place to catch up on some history. Unfortunately, everything is in Spanish and for an English speaker is hard to understand, unless they hire a guide.

A beautiful place in the old town. The fountain with the spelling mistake and some strange figures is the centre. Around you find religion, museum, restaurants and more. People sitting on the benches just enjoying the sun is very nice.

This is a small plaza just down the street from Plaza Independencia, with a nice fountain in the center. There are shaded areas and benches.

Another shady square, this one the central square of old Montevideo. There appeared to be a market, or at least street traders there on the day we visited. The architecture around the square is beautiful as is the fountain which is the focal point.
