I went buy some dried food this morning. The cashiers were very rude. They gave free bags to other customers but charged me $1 each. When I asked why, they said (two women) out loud in Chinese, "现在哪里不用钱? 需要就买!" I said I came here all the time and they were nice. One said, "别说以前!" They finally gave me one bag. Probably they didn't need anything more business so to have such bad customer service people working as store cashiers. This was a terrible experience. The other people servered me from the large counter before were always nice and explained patiently how to use their products.

Extremely busy store, with loads of upselling on the dried seafood thing. Not sure if it’s overpriced, but they really have so many things that you might not be found outside.

This supermarket sells fake product. I bought 2 of this and all them were fake. I bought the authentic one before in another supermarket for $22. This product is much cheaper but doesn’t show the import company. It was skeptical but still gave it a try and came out fake!!!! This Po Wing supermarket sells fake products. Don’t trust them!!! Waste of my money!!!

I bought dry seafood from Po Wing Hong Food Market Online The product I received are completely moldy. I sent photos to them, but he refuse acknowledge that moldy, they keep saying that white powder is sea salt.

This is a great place to go to for dried seafood and herbs. My family always come here for the best prices for dry foods. Ramen, cookies/crackers, spices, sauces.. Although the market itself is on the small side, it is always crowded so you have to leave your cart outside. Cashiers work fast so even though there’s a line, it moves fast.

Nice variety. Some good prices and some not. Like every store, you have to do your homework to get the best deal. They do have a lot of Chinese herbal ingredients.

My family and I come here often as this used to be our local grocery shopping store. They have plenty of options for snacks, dried foods and frozen foods! I still shop here often to restock my snacks.

Ordered 4 bottles of Pure Cordyceps 2 weeks ago. Received capsules which have an expiration date of 9/17/25. Sent Email Last week and had asked for replacement. So far, no response.

Po Wing Hong Food Market may be geared to people more accustomed to their specialized offering than me since the unavoidable strong smell of bulk dried fish and other dried seafood really hits you when immediately come in the store! It surrounds both entrances. Wow! Important to note - There is a warning sign in English and Chinese "Beware Pickpockets," so they likely have had a problem in store! Clearly, there is a selection of other Chinese-geared items that may be unique to Po Wing Hong also contributing to its popularity, such as to name a few: certain frozen seafood, zanthoxylum bungeanum seed oil, bird's nest (with or without rock sugar), Chinese New Year candy, plus a wall of health and beauty goods. They're just not for me - so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. For customers interested in these types of items, perhaps Po Wing Hong is a great place to shop. My interest was in specific condiments, which I found the widest selection at Hong Kong Supermarket around the corner and best pricing at New Kam Man on Canal. Given this experience and the olfactory challenges, it's unlikely that I'll reenter Po Wing Hong Food Market again.

This place is great for dried seafood like oysters & dried shrimp. They also take credit cards. You will find things like Chinese herbs to chocolates.

This has been around for many years in Chinatown, as young as I can remember. You can get herbs like ginseng, sea cucumber, dried scallops, bird's nest, and many more Asian herbs in this place. There are many Asian delicacies in this place. I mostly come here to get tea and drinks like chrysanthemum tea, herbal tea, soy milk, and grass jelly that you can get at an affordable price. You can also get mushrooms and durian cookies here. Many Asian goods in this place.

The staff here are very friendly. They joke around with you and help you find whatever you're looking for. This is definitely one of the shops around Chinatown that I love going to. You can find everything in here for cheap. If you're ever looking for Hong Kong items, I definitely recommend coming here to find them.

Poor Customer Service. Emailed them about choice of carriers and got the run around. I was told that it would come one day earlier, but I am still waiting for my items. I would not use them for any future purchases!

What a lovely new find! This place has everything and anything! They have rare fried goods for snacks and medicine. The snack selections is vast and they have the most unique and interesting items that you can't find anywhere else even in other big Chinese grocery stores/ markets! Being a huge Mooncake fan, this place is the epitome of my mooncake dream come true! They offer huge selections of Mooncake of different kinds, shapes, flavors, and price range. The Mooncake collections contain both traditional and more modern/innovative/creative mooncakes. They also have two fridges dedicated to ice Mooncake (which I love!!! Since the skin of ice Mooncake resembles Mochi and is light, fluffy and chewy!). One of the fridges was exclusively designated for durian ice Mooncake if that's your thang. I guess they don't want the durian smell to get to the regular ones. So if durian tickles your fancy, you can go to town on them here! Tried two different flavors of MX Snowy Twin Pack ice mooncakes, the peanut butter & black sesame one is my favorite! The decadent nutty black sesame flavor works perfectly with the runny peanut butter center! I had very high hopes for The mango with pomelo dessert one, but it was a bit too sweet for me. Overall amazing place for food, snacks and everyday items!

This place is pretty cool. I went there strictly because my niece asked for some Asian snacks. This place is very local,meaning older Asians shop here. I didn't see any young people except me. I stuck like a sore thumb. Anyways there's tons of rows of snacks, chips,cookies, candy crackers just so much yummy things. There's also seafood, drinks, veggies,medicine. Just alot of stuff in general. If you're visiting like me and you want some snacks, check this place out.

Looking for this soda for a long time already! Wow finally it's here at Powingonline.com I ordered it online and got the package in 3 days ! So convenient! Now I can enjoyed the unique taste paired with hotpot at home tonight! I couldn't find the similar item in most US grocery so far! I also ordered the American ginseng roots and scallops, mushroom, dried shrimp. Now I can plan for my dinner with ginseng chicken soup , braised mushroom with scallop .

There is something truly iconic and authentic about a traditional Chinese grocery store that creates a personal service to send dried Chinese delicacies, e.g. mushrooms, seaweed, meats, seafood etc. to loved ones during the Lunar New Year. I thank my friend Wilson Tang of Nom Wah for introducing this wonderful food market to me which has made a huge difference in my life during this pandemic. In preparation for the Lunar / Chinese New Year which will take place next Saturday, January 25th, my partner and I accompanied my mom and cousin to NYC's Chinatown. Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar and falls sometime between late January and late February. We are welcoming the Year of the Rat which is the first in the Chinese zodiac cycle. Decorations add a festive flair not only to homes but businesses as well with ornate red banners adorned with golden Chinese calligraphy. Groceries for the festival dinners and regular meals need to be purchased in anticipation of the holiday. The whole point of Chinese New Year preparations goes beyond getting ready to enjoy feasts, lion dances and fireworks but time for family reunions and new beginnings for the year to come.

It is always a trustworthy and valued experience while shopping at Po Wing Hong in NY Chinatown. Especially looking for any rare specialty hi-quality gourmet cooking recipes then this is the ONLY store with good reputation. As in healthy food, so live in longer life !! This is my second choice Asian supermarket. The do have a selection of fresh fruit that fits everyone's budget especially with today's recession without breaking the bank. The carry a good selection of Pocky in many flavors and Haw Flakes, etc. which I can live on Pocky. Customer service is attentive and some can speak English as well as Cantonese rather than Mandarin. I don't believe they have a good selection of jun for Dragon Boat Festival. Unfortunately the don't have many locations unlike their competitor Hong Kong Supermarket. http://www.powing.com

If you're looking for Chinese medicinal herbs, this is the place to go. No crazy dried newt legs or anything like that - just plants dried and in many containers. The air is filled with that smell of my grandma's old house... very herbal but also a little musty. I recommend double-checking what you buy - some may be moldy. But the front ladies are generally good at giving you better pieces if they like you. They also have a small selection of groceries, but that's not what most people get while here.

More like a Chinese/Asian condiments and snacks store. No produce. I'm happy they had the fish sauce and ceramic Chinese soup spoons! They also sell the preserved duck egg too, so noted for next time. And other random things like ceramic rice bowls, tea, sake set ...dried goods and lot of Chinese medicines

Visits to this place during my youth was commandeered by my mother, but as I've grown, my visits are solo. As long as you can speak Chinese (preferably Cantonese), they'll be more willing to help if you have no clue what you're doing. For those looking for snacks and regular groceries, skip it. Come here if you're looking for herbal or medicinal ingredients, or even dried and fermented goods. Their pricing is competitive and they have a large range of variety. The ladies behind the counter are straight forward, but will be patient if you at least have a semblance of what you're looking for. Some of the things I've purchased here are: ginseng, birds nest, dried scallops, and traditional Chinese soup ingredients. They take credit cards, which is a great help.

PoWing online - Ginseng is good, authentic and trustworthy! Give thumbs up, and the customer service is very good too! I purchased American Ginseng XL head Round Grade AAAA, it is good quality, will buy it again!

A neighborhood and family favorite. My family always comes here to buy ginseng or any other dried Chinese goods, which are high quality. If you get to know the owner and the workers, you can haggle and get a good discount! Don't except to be treated like a king here! They are always busy and will just treat you like a commoner and shoo you off the line once you're done paying. Also be prepared for some pushing and shoving with the constant bustle of people!

I love, love, LOVE this place!!! My mom took me here one evening when I met up with her by her office to go home. This place has the charm that's often lost in the enterprise of franchised supermarkets. It can be chaotic during the weekends, and a lot of the patrons are what my dad calls "old school Cantonese" folks. I come here for the cheap prices and to traipse around like an archaeologist: sometimes I pick up their little snacks for cheap like dried mango, seaweed-wrapped rice crackers (check for MSG), and notably, ingredients. A bag of shredded coconut can run as low as $1 and change. A certain brand of tea I get here (green tea with roasted brown rice) is the cheapest I've ever come across ($3 a box). You better believe I got all pre-apocalypse and bought a bevvy to stuff in my drawers and cabinets in my office. Winning.

MY GO TO chinatown market for the CHEAPEST pantry items.. but don't expect to come here for fresh produce.. it's more a place for bottled drinks, snacks, candy, canned goods, ramen, anything packaged ALTHOUGH there is a small freezer and refrigerated section .. and for those who are interested an herbal counter Items I tend to get here & are priced cheaper than other markets i've been to --soy sauce --sriracha --kecap manis --soy milk cartons --popsicles --tofu --mooncakes when it's the season NOTE: one lady said it's a $10 minimum for credit card BUT another lady allowed me to use my credit card for an $8 purchase

Excellent service and prices. Unfortunately they do not have fresh foods such as produce or meat, but they have a wide selection of dried goods. I come here to buy shiitake mushrooms, black fungus, dried bamboo shoots, dried shrimp, and other dried products, as well as cereal grains and beans. They also have a good selection of cooking and serving utensils, as well as a wide array of Chinese medicines. Once I wanted to buy a pot that required a bit of assembly. When I brought it to them, they patiently took out a screwdriver and put together the pot lid for me. Also, whenever you buy fragile items they take extra care to wrap them carefully with newspaper sheets. Another time I asked an employee where something was. He went over to bring a ladder, climbed up the ladder, brought the item down from the top shelf for me. 87/100

They have a fantastic selection of RAMEN. As much as I love Hong Kong Super Market, if I'm in the area and I just need to pick up some ramen and Yan Yan, I can stop in easily in at Po Wing Hong, grab it and go. (Otherwise for HKSM you have to go downstairs and then wait in costco/walmart-esque lines, which is only okay if I'm getting a ton of items). And they take credit cards ~~ very appreciated in Chinatown.

This place is quite similar to Hong Kong Supermarket just down the street. It does get significantly more crowded. Why does this get 5 stars than compared to the 4 stars of Hong Kong Supermarket (find the reviews)? The service here is a lot better. More employees here speak English (despite having a smaller number of employees). There are actually employees here that can help you. Hong Kong supermarket only has people behind stands, cashiers, and stockboys. They also have Asian herbs (none of the illegal kind - I think). If you're all into Eastern Medicine or just want some fresh ginseng, this place is the place to go if you want an English speaking person to help you.

Back in the good ol' days when Po Wing Hong and Dynasty (now HK Supermarket) had beef for biz, I'd always prefer this place. My aunt and I would come straight over here every Sunday after service. The best thing about this place is that because it's a small place, people are friendlier. Okay, I notice this might not be the case for some places that love to keep a close eye on you like a criminal; it's intimidating. This place lets you get on your biz' (junking) and the staff are really kind. You get a real, personal, friendly service here. It's mostly dried, prepackaged food in here, so don't expect too much fresh veggies and meat. You can pretty much find anything you're looking for here and if you need some dried abalones, scallops, etc., ask for the boss lady (with glasses). She is super friendly and always a pleasure to talk to. I love that this place isn't constantly changing and renovating to be the "hottest" and most "exclusive" place in Chinatown. It's the way I remember it as a kind and even if there are changes, it's minimal.

My mom's go to place for cheap Asian snacks! And sometimes peanuts. I usually visit here to get my fix of Hi-Chew candies or seaweed snacks. The chips selection has dwindled a bit over time. But that doesn't mean I won't stop shopping here!

Here is a review for an establishment old and recent. I guess I am the second generation to shop here, the "old" part of that last sentence. I was actually here on the last day of 2017 in the afternoon to buy some snacks. Happy New Year, 2018 on day one, the recent. Po Wing is for the most part dried, fermented and a bit of a refrigerated items like noodles, wonton wrappers, eggs, drinks place to shop. There's no meat butcher, seafood, or fresh vegetables for sale here (unless it's preserved). This is a store you can get your hundreds of dollars Korean ginseng. We come here for the dried goods like the dried mushrooms, sea cucumbers, ginseng, dates and other Chinese herbs. We buy the dried anchovies, squid and fish here. I can find spices and sauces here like garlic powder, curry and 5-Spice powder + soy and hot sauces, etc... Got myself some candies and cookies last afternoon. Nuts and tea are a check. Ramen and other noodles are a check though I find them lacking in variety. A frozen section for frozen dumplings + other items are a check. Po Wing also carries kitchen and dining serve-ware but I find the choices not much to be offered. One can even find incense and -money- to burn here. The store is not that large. It is well organized. There is staffing on every aisle to assist, stock and keep things in check. I come here really for some of the favorites I was introduced to as a kid. Po Wing doesn't carry some things I look for, Po Wing sells things I can find in other markets and Po Wing sell things I can't find in other markets. In a way it is a useful retailer and misses on some points. Got myself a 2018 calendar here. Not that I need another one.

This is majority an asian health food/meds store than a grocery/supermarket. When I came in here, the majority of the people shopping were on the left side of the store (the meds section). I think I'll stick to the drinks and the cooking stuff in this store. Alot of candy....here

75 cent strawberry Pocky. Oh my. $1.25 chocolate Pocky. Oh my. $1.05 White Rabbit candy. Oh my. You heard me! MY strawberry Pocky. MY chocolate Pocky. And... MY White Rabbit candy! All mine mine mine! And at those prices, I can theoretically buy out their stock and legitimately make them ALLLLLL mine. (j/k, I wouldn't do that to you...) I feel like I'm giving away the secrets to the Temple of Forbidden Treasures (or, at the very least, the Temple of Forbidden Atkins Treasures...), but seriously...with its extensive selection, inexpensive pricing, and efficient checkout system, this place is TOO good to keep a secret.

Po Wing Hong is one of the most popular places in Chinatown, for its good customer service, solid variety, and extremely affordable prices. Like many Asian supermarkets, there seems to be a little bit of everything from certain spices to produce that can't be found in most western markets. They frequently run specials here for clearance items, of which there are many. Don't be alarmed by the basement, mildew like smell, its a combination of the produce, seafood, and herbs all creating a strong odor that can be strange to folks who don't come often. Cash was the only form of payment that was accepted here but I believe credit cards are accepted also now. Sure, speaking Chinese is helpful but most of the workers here can communicate just fine in English.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. this is one heck of a old-timey place. I've been coming here since I was a small child and will continue to return till either one of us hits the dirt. This store makes being an ABC easy! great selection of good items at super badass cheap prices. amazing customer service. They speak Mandarin, Cantonese, English and EVEN A LITTLE SPANISH. They havent changed their layout in over 20 years and dont plan on doing so, because if it aint broke, dont fix it. The bathroom is in the inner right corner of the store-- key only. Foodstamps, Benefit cards, all major credit cards and of course cash is accepted. (trust me, using a credit card in Chinatown isnt an easy thing to do). they have a website: http://www.powing.com/index.html but it doesnt have much information beyond the address. but the fact that a website exists is a shocker to me!

Randomly wandered in here last time I had to run an errand, and had to check in so I can remember to come back- cause this place is awesome!!! Lots of Asian rdy foods from herbs, teas, noodles, spices, then a small frozen and fridge section with tofu and some seafood - the majority of the items offered at a lower price than other markets, and the best part is not everything is imported from China - also from Hong Kong and Taiwan as well, which tends to offer much higher quality dry goods/food items. Book marked and reviewed - will be back!

I think the unique thing about this market is that it still retains the "local" flavor somehow despite that other similar markets have evolved to the more western style supermarkets. Maybe that's just my opinion. When I walk in here, the chaos is endearing and while everything is stacked in an orderly manner, it's still neighborhood store feel enough for me to be willing to look for hidden jems among the shelves. You'll run into your share of rude Chinese people, no doubt, but I think that's also part of the charm of this place (call me crazy). The best thing? This place has the best prices in all of those supermarkets. Yep. They're about 5-10% cheaper than other like supermarkets for the same product. Of course, they don't have as complete an inventory as other places, say HK supermarket, but when I know they have the product, I'd definitely walk the extra half block to get it here.

My favorite place to shop for groceries in Ctown. This place has the best prices, need I say anything else on how great this place is? The only disadvantage is that they don't have a big variety like Hong Kong Supermarket which is literally located at the end of the corner of Po Wing Hong. Staffs are friendly, most of them can communicate in English. They might not be able to write a whole novel, but their english is good enough for day-to-day converse. Place is small so don't be alarm if you go at rush hour and you see many locals shopping there. The staff members are always stocking up items so they sometimes go around the store with a big cart of supplies. Other then that, I have and will continue to be a customer of Po Wing Hong. I just bought a huge vacuum package of yeast for $6. The yeast looks like it will last me for a year....

I'm pretty sure this Chinese supermarket is the best place in Chinatown to get dry goods - any kind of sauce in a bottle, noodles, canned goods, candy, spices, HUGE bags of rice, etc... they've got it at good prices. There's an herbal counter (I don't know anything about that, so I'm not a customer over there), and they also sell kitchen implements (like the nice bamboo dumpling steamer I just picked up). It's usually busy, but checkout is fast and efficient.

My go to place for Chinese dried goods. My family comes here from out of state and I've been pretty much following their footsteps since moving to NY. Ive been here maybe 10 times and every time there's friendly and helpful service. Today particularly, a guy asked what I was looking for and offered to get it for me. I've never had someone from the Chinese market extend that kind of customer service. This happened a few other times as well. overall, like this place a lot!

This is THE place to get traditional dried food for Chinese cooking such as red dates, lo han guo, dried mushrooms, dried fungus, dried scallops etc. Lots of variety and reasonable prices. The staff are generally helpful. As other reviewers have said, if you are looking for snacks or fresh produce, New York Mart or Hong Kong supermarket are better choices. If you are looking for traditional Chinese soup ingredients and dried seafood, this is the right place.

If you're looking for dried items to make Chinese-styled soups with, this is definitely the place. I got a recommendation to go there from my relatives who go there for almost everything. The sales associates were all helpful, there were Cantonese, Mandarin, and English speakers. If you want to quickly pop in for a bottle of tea, juice, or what have you while you're exploring the area, then this place is also good for that. I find the drinks cheaper than other stores.

Best price and quality in CTown! The owner is nice and friendly. If you don't know a damn thing about herbs and what to do the staff are friendly and will help u out!!

I enjoy shopping in Chinatown. You can find anything for really cheap, But this store I absolutely love. When I first came here my mom was looking for an herbal remedy that can help with arthritis. She was told by some of her friends to check out this location and they'll be able to help her find some herb she can drink to help her. Unfortunately not a lot of employees in the store spoke English but we were able to get one kind lady to help us out. Also I'm a ginger tea lover, at the healthy food store around my way would cost me $12 for a box of tea. Now in this store it only cost me $5 for a big bag of tea. Got to love it... Right. I would recommend coming her to find that tea you like for a good price.... Just be ready to translate!

My boyfriend and I went there to get some Asian herbals and ginseng, the qualities of the products are much better than other asian places, the owner was very nice, and the price was decent since the quality of the ginseng was super good. Definitely a good place for herbals and ginseng!

It's smaller and a little more expensive than the larger Hong Kong Supermarket. Tofu especially and all variations of it are about 50 cents more. Wouldn't really choose this over Hong Kong. Not enough variety here.

Store began at 1979 at Hester Street. This store has the best price and good customer service. Mrs. Ng is always there to greet you. We are customers since I was attending PS 130 many moons ago. They are the largest restaurant distributors in North America for Chinese goods. The company is actively involved with various Chinese Associations and local group like CPC. You can always greet Mr. Ng at most of the Chinese Association parties. They are a honest and hard working family. The staffs had followed them since early days. I would prefers to come here to shop. Their price is very good. Do you know they are the biggest sellers for birdnest? I wonders if they will expand to Brookyln or Flushing as the younger Chinese family moved away from central Chinatown. Well, all the friends mentioned that they buy birdnest here, so this is the place I would recommend as well. Rich

Just for the record, Po Wing Hong sells cookware like cooking pans and knives cheaper than Kam Man and Hong Kong Market.

One of the workers here was a real prick (excuse my French). So there's a customer bathroom in the back of this market and a family member of mine used the bathroom and one of the custodial workers was well aware of this because he saw him enter. Less than a minute later, the worker came with a wet mop and angrily pounded on the door as if we owed him rent money. This family member of mine said "hold on". The normal thing to do if you knew someone was in there was to wait, even after knocking...no, he pounded on the door once again (three times in total). I was two aisles over and heard the angry pounding so I quickly rushed over and saw this happening. I don't know about you but this is a form of bullying and harassment. I was extremely upset at this and told the custodial worker that someone's in there and that the bathroom is for customers, and we are that. He replied hastily, "well he took too long". My family member came out highly upset because he was in there for about two minutes. I straight up told the worker that he needed patience and if he didn't have that, he shouldn't be allowed to work anywhere near people. He almost knocked the door down! I said this very loudly, as I was upset. We walked away and later on overheard a higher upper of the worker being addressed for his aggressive actions. Besides this upsetting situation, I managed to snag $1 bubble tea straws and various pocky flavored snacks. They also sell herbal remedies here. PS: we stood on line at the first register and placed all of our things on the counter (there was a lot). As the customer in front of us left, the cashier (older woman) told us to go to register 2...um, okay...we do so, assuming that her line was closed. Nope, she was just lazy. We had to take all of our things and transfer them to the second register and as soon as I turned around, she was helping another customer. By the way, the "10 items or less" line does not exist here. Bad experience here, overall.

Whose ready for some Eastern medicine? The ingredients for many home remedies can be found on the shelves and behind the counter. Also if you are in the mood for shark fin, dried seahorses, or any other sea creatures get ready to shell out some big bucks for your exotic taste. If you're not as gastronomically adventurous as me, you can pick up boxes and boxes of pocky for cheap. Sometime I just wander around the snack aisle reminiscing of junk food I ate as a kid and picking up new stuff to satisfy my inner child. For all you amateur chefs out there looking to invent new dishes with an Asian flair, I recommend picking up some of the sauces and curries.

Great place for you chinese medicinal herbs! Cheap price for ginseng! Has all the essential snacks and they are cheap!! Gold Key mangos!!! Its the dried mangos in a green plastic bag, They are the best!! $4.50 for the biggest bag which is very cheap and they are very fresh! I pick up at least 6 bags when I go to here. This place is a must if you visit Chinatown in New York.

My mom comes to this place to buy herbal stuff. I never liked this place because the employees are always so rude. They talk and talk non-stop to each other like they are not going to go somewhere far away. When they push you, they don't say sorry at all. They stare at you the minute you walk in that door like you some criminal or something. Then when you are being a little picky they give you the BIGGEST attitude you've ever seen. They would also talk about you when you are like standing 2 inch away. All I have to say is rude, Rude, RUde, RUDe, RUDE!

Best prices in Chinatown. This is where all the locals go, it was packed 2 weeks before Chinese New Year. Another large supermarket on Canal St was empty the same day.
