Harbor Springs, Michigan Is the Best Small U.S. Town for a Lake Vacation in 2024

"An authentic restoration of a historic water taxi that offers a leisurely, hour-long cruise around Little Traverse Bay at about 5 miles per hour, with open-sided breezes and onboard storytelling from the captain and first mate about grand waterfront cottages, the bay’s lumber-and-fur-trading history and local lake facts (the bay reaches roughly 170 feet at its deepest and warms to about 69°F in summer). Tours are run from a private dock associated with a nearby waterfront restaurant." - Leilani Marie Labong Leilani Marie Labong Leilani Marie Labong is a San Francisco-based journalist who focuses on food, design, and travel. Sherri was delightful! This tour is a must for anyone visiting Harbor Springs. It’s the best way to see the harbor side and the bay side of the homes on the point! Wonderful way to learn about the history of the harbor.

It was one of the highlights of my trip to Harbor Springs. I highly recommend this boat ride. Captain John and Peter kept us informed about the whole area. They are very helpful and friendly.

Absolutely wonderful 1 hour tour. Had a chance to see some beautiful places on the water with a great narrative. If you have not gone, book a reservation. You will love it

They cancelled our boat tour and never communicated ! We drove over an hour to get there and no accommodation! Very snobby people at the Pier! Awful!

We have been coming to Harbor Springs for years. This year friends joined us and we wanted to add something new to our trip. I found the harbor boat tour and I highly recommend this trip. We ordered food and drinks, and it was phenomenal. Both the Captain and First Mate were so gracious, informative and focused on us having a great trip. It’s about an hour, the boat is very comfy, the limit is 12. The small group number gives it an intimate feel and you can’t not make friends with the others. The history of the shoreline is very interesting. There is nothing elSe like it, that I have ever been on. Don’t miss this trip. On our particular day, it was Capt. Dave’s last trip as he was retiring after this trip. “Thank you Captain for spending your last day with us.”

I am a local who hadn't been on the Pointer Boat in many years. Decided to take my two sisters and their families along with our family and had the most enjoyable time. John is a wonderful captain and both Carol and Suzanne are knowledgeable and gracious hosts. We all learned things about this beautiful area that we didn't know before. Would highly recommend! Thanks, too, to Jody for helping with food/beverage arrangements and for handling our restaurant reservation following the boating excursion!

Our whole "Burt Lake Crew", all 12 of us took an evening tour in mid July. It was fantastic! The ages varied from 30 - almost 60 and we all enjoyed the boat, the area history narration, the entire tour. Will definitely do again!!

Yelp
Perfect evening on the water! Our large family booked two back to back tours and each group enjoyed. Wonderful tour full of history from retired teacher from harbor springs high school. Boat is beautiful and it was fun to see Harbor from the water!

Yelp
The Pointer Boat, has quite a history that matches the community in which it is set: Harbor Point and Harbor Springs. The boat was originally commissioned to carry supplies, teachers, musicians and more from the main part of Harbor Springs out to the residence of Harbor point which it did until the mid 60s. The residents of Harbor Point couldn't do this themselves because it's an exclusive community. You get the gist -money and privilege. The boat ride was a little over an hour long and took us up and down the coast line with a great narration at least the parts we heard. There were 12 people on the boat which is the capacity plus the captain and first mate. Captain and first mate are great individuals but neither one of them could clearly articulate what they were trying to share on top of the wind and engine noise. At the end of the trip, we suggested they use a microphone. They said oh yeah that's a great idea we will have to consider that. Now really this boat has been in service doing this over decades and no one else has mentioned this?! I would venture to guess they are not allowed by the residents. The boat is docked behind Stafford's pier restaurant. When the restaurant is open, a drink can be purchased from their bar to enjoy while on the boat tour. Unfortunately for us, the restaurant was not open due to the lack of people to staff it. So sad! I would not say this is in any way a luxury tour. You are sitting on hardwood benches. And you need to be somewhat agile as you are stepping down four stairs that are steep from the dock to the bottom of the boat. The boat tour Is intended to provide an overview of the city and its history. I would have given it four stars if we had been able to hear the narration.
