We paid a significant premium specifically for live shrimp delivery, expecting a level of quality consistent with the reputation of a well-known seafood supplier. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing due to poor handling and avoidable mistakes: Approximately 90% of the shrimp arrived dead, and the few remaining were barely moving (as shown in the video). When paying a premium for live seafood, this is simply unacceptable. I've purchased from lesser-known vendors before, and their shrimp were genuinely alive—often jumping out of the box. That’s what live delivery should look like. Packaging was another major issue. The shrimp were packed in a tall, narrow box, causing the ones at the bottom to be crushed under the weight. A flat, wide box should have been used instead, which is a basic standard in live shrimp transportation. It completely defeats the purpose of paying a premium for live shrimp, only to have them arrive dead. The product and service offered by this place clearly fall short of living up to its name.

I have been a regular client for years. Looks like the selection might have diminished a bit, BUT they had the 1st arrival of Québec lobster. Always very polite and efficient.

This is the 1st time I order LIVE Seasonal Spot Prawns product for delivery from this store. However, I had ordered many LIVE seafood ( including Spot prawns) from other markets , stores. In Montreal, Toronto also. Unfortunately, this store has the “WORSE” delivery packaging to keep the seafood alive. We are willing to pay a higher price because it’s alive and freshness for cooking specific dish and the taste, and texture. But when it arrived, 90% are all dead, not moving anymore, the remaining 10% are very close to dead, hardly moving. We ordered 5 Lbs live Spot Prawns. There is a reason we order the ALIVE stock and willing to pay more for it. But if the delivery cannot maintain at least 80% of the stock alive. Why offer to the customer? Instead we would just go buy the frozen seafood. Why need to choose the LIVE seafood. I am very disappointed. This is happening at a Specialize Seafood store, that you will expect they know what they’re doing. This is very unexpected. For sure , I won’t buy from this store again for any Live Seafood items, as this store don’t know how to handle perishable seafood product.

My family has been shopping here for several++ years and no issues. The guys cutting the fish in the back have always been great with service. Today, Saturday 1:35pm I entered and had my tiny 4lbs dog 'inside my bag" and was yelled at when entering by an older woman. Is this how you greet all your customers? Shocking, to say the least. I understand if the tiny 4lb dog "inside my bag bothers you so intensely, BUT there is NO NEED to have the entire store hear you?!" I'm a customer, but now not sure if I will return. Thank you, to the kind young man who went and got my salmon for me, "Gracias" . Someone teach the young lady at the cash to at least say "Bonjour and Merci". Between the woman yelling at me when I entered and the cashier's attitude as if I was bothering her... to the Owner, I say "You will loose good customers if this is how your staff welcomes, and treats long standing customers when they check out." However, the young gentleman who got my fish, I say 'Gracias" he was very kind, helpful, with a nice smile. Perhaps the two women can learn some customer service from him?

Google
Oyster selection is usually solid and fresh. There is a young gentleman who really knows his stuff and checks oysters before selling. Others, I have had sell me some oysters that are not fresh/alive. Overall, good choice.

Google
Loud and inconsiderate local for the neighbors behind, loud freezers on all day and left loud additional truck all day turned on at a high volume. Really should update freezer system.

Ordered what they advertised as being U12 scallops and U8 shrimps…. Ended up having smaller than 10/20 scallops ( actually Metro grocery stores are now selling 10/20 Japanese scallops that are much bigger than what La mer advertised as U12 …. ) and for the U8 shrimps …. These were at most 10/15 Shrimps NOT U8 !!!!!!!!!! If you want larger seafood , don’t even bother…. Besides that their customers service was good, but total ripoff…

We were looking for Chionoecetes unfortunately they were all sold out cause of the long weekend. In the end we grabbed some other crabs and clams. But stuffs there were very friendly and nice to help and all we bought were fresh and good quality. :)

Yelp
High quality of fish . Fish is fresh and delicious. Even the service is good too. Thank you.

Yelp
The people inside the fish area were extremely nice and helpful. Seafood was fresh and you could get ice to go. They sold cooler bags to keep our seafood fresh for the ride home. They were really friendly with my son allowing him to touch the crabs.

Yelp
We were there an hour before closing. If you're coming from the west on Rene-Levesque, turn right after you pass the sign, then turn right and then right again and you'll get to the parking lot entrance! We walked in and two of the fish mongers were cleaning up for the day. It didn't take long before Sebastien comes over and asks if he can help us. We talk about oysters and he asks me what taste profile I'm looking for. He suggests trying a few and then he can recommend oyster types from there. He opens two for me to try. He explains the flavor profiles of the oysters from each area and provides a couple of tips. He explains that before selling an oyster, they already do a physical test to check if it's fresh. An oyster that has a good sound when tapped on means it is still freshly sealed. The one that he's not sure about the sound of freshness, he sets aside. Their oysters are always sold within a couple of weeks from the harvest date. We want to buy some squid and he goes in detail of how to prep and cook it. Pan fried in garlic butter for a number of seconds per side. He gave us a good bag of crushed ice to keep the seafood cool. In the boutique side, we were stopped by the founder serving caviar and smoked fish for taste testing. He was very friendly and also had some good recommendations on prepping and serving oysters. They even sell this oyster shucking block ($10) that can prevent you from stabbing your palm with a shucking knife ($4). Just buying seafood here is a fun experience! The staff is knowledgeable and care about their work. They sell sustainably caught seafood and track where each item comes from. They're here to sell you fresh seafood and not trying to make a quick buck off of you. I and my palate approve :)

Yelp
If you love oysters you definitely need to try this place. Pricing are amazing and the selections are vast. The savings from a fancy restaurant settings get passed on the excellent oysters. Sitting outside on a simple picnic wooden table is just fine

Yelp
You will find any sea creature you can think of at this place. We went to get some runs and salmon to make some sushi at home. We were recommended by a friend who knows their seafood and we were not disappointed. They have a variety of seafood, sauces, seafood preps and many stuffs. You get to choose your fish from a variety of display, which was cool. Kinda cold in the fridge so take a sweater to stay longer and explore. I will definitely come back to try other items.

Yelp
This is our first time to shop at La Mer, we are just amazed by this place. With the help from their experts, they will guide you through their selections. So, if you're looking for fresh fish and seafood, you should definitely stop by here.

Yelp
Well-stocked seafood store; they had a few varieties of oysters and they do shucking for you (for an additional fee). They even have uni; the worker was kind enough to let me try one for free to see how fresh it was. I walked away with some scallops (in shell), which were very fresh and tasted clean. Will be back to fix seafood cravings!

Yelp
Family had brought over dozens of oysters (Kumamotos, Lucky Limes and some other ones) and smoked fish on 2 occasions and they were really fresh and delicious! Very happy with the seafood here. I don't have time to visit in person, hopefully when I come back to Montreal in the summer!

Yelp
So happy I found this place! It was by chance as I was driving by on the way to Chinatown so I decided to stop in. There are lots of seafood shops in Montreal, most of them I believe above average but I'd concur this is one of the best. I had just come back from a trip up in Matane, I have a fave place up there to compare to but selection and pricing at La Mer is quite exceptional. The setup as you walk in is the entrance is the specialty food shop with all kinds of wonderful spices, sauces, oils, caviar, wine and worldly food delights. Then off to the left is it's own temperature controlled cooler room with copious amounts of everything seafood on ice. I have not seen a temperature cooler room in a store but it's pretty clever. It also speaks volumes that since the perishability of seafood is quite rapid that they are doing what they can to preserve freshness. Selection of fish is plentiful with lots of fine cuts on display. Selection of oysters is one if not the best I've so far found in MTL. They also had many tanks of lobster and other sea delights on the left side wall. I was interested in getting some oysters for a dinner so I asked what they recommended. One of the fish mongers mentioned the Valentine oyster was good taste and price for value. He also shucked me one to try. Easy enough for me to buy a dozen. Great service! I have got to come back and check out some of the hard to find seafood. Very interesting to see they even had Uni (Sea urchin gonads) and Ahi Tuna. Rarely do you see these at Seafood shops here in Montreal. Also Caspian Sea Caviar could be the only place in Montreal to find this rare delicacy. Check it out! Great selection and prices seem decent!

Yelp
Fresh Fish!(Portuguese accent) or Look At The Gills On That Where do you buy your fish? I posed the question a little while back and it sparked little discussion, well nuts to the lot of you because I have now found the place. As you walk in to La Mer, at your 12 o'clock you will see a man behind a booth and guts and scales flailing aplenty. Your 3 o'clock are the odds and ends. Canned lump crab meat for your crab cakes and what have you, next to that, the frozen stuff, for those that are in to that sort of thing. Then, at your 9 O'clock, is the gateway to fish paradise. Most people would think you would need to put on swimming trunks to be so close to this many fish. Texas red fish, black cod, weekly specials with big plump eyes, slimy scales and blood filled gills. Scallops, shrimps with the heads on and it doesn't smell like fish, it smells like the sea. Fair prices, on the spot cleaning, heck they even make ice cream. This is the place that chefs get their fish from, what more do you need? Waka Waka

Yelp
This place sucks. Save your hard earned cash and do not spend it here. Recently I went to buy wild king salmon. I live in Northern California every year, I eat king salmon from Monterey area. Also have bought BC king salmon from another fish shop in Montreal, so I know what proper wild caught salmon tastes like. When I arrived at this place, they had a ton of farmed salmon and just 2 giant pieces of supposedly "wild king salmon". The fish did not look fresh and something about its appearance made me suspicious. I asked if they have other wild king salmon, answer was, "No, this is all we have.". I took the risk and got one of the pieces at approximately $72.00 per kilo. Cooked it at home and unfortunately it did not taste well. It was heavy and too fatty. Also, one of my guests complained that they had fishy indigestion after the meal. I am convinced that they sell farmed salmon pretending that it is wild-caught king. There are much better places in Montreal where you can get fresh fish for significantly better price. In fact, 10 days later I went to another shop and got the tBC wild-caught king salmon I was looking for - fantastic taste, great appearance, decent price (approximately $45 kilo). So do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

Yelp
La Mer is a true tried and tested place, which has been around forever. You just can't go wrong, whether it be for shopping for your fresh fish or having a bite to eat!

Yelp
Great Lobster and Oyster,so delicious,I had a wonderful dinner there. Will go back again.

Yelp
I went to La Mer for the first time today to get some tuna for my poke. I ended leaving the fish market with uni and a hamachi. It's a great place with a lot of fresh and diverse seafood.

Yelp
Maybe the best fish market in Montreal (at least the best that I know). They always have a nice selection of fresh fish of high quality and prices are lower than other places (like the one at Marché Atwater). I don't eat cooked fish and seafood so quality and freshness is paramount for me. We bought scallop a few time (to do carpaccio) and it was always sublime. The salmon was also fresh and very tasty for our tartare. They have a large choice of oysters and they will gladly open some for you to let you taste. Try it!

Yelp
Under the sea, nobody beat us, fry us and eat us.....Ummm wanna bet? Like fish? This place has it ALL! I wandered around like a kid in a candy store humming under the sea (Disney's Little Mermaid, you know the lobster sings it). They have whole fish for sale, from salmon to texas red fish, cod, sardines, whole octopi and fish i've never even heard off. They will also de-scale, clean, and fillet your fish of choice for no extra charge. You can also buy different kinds of oysters, mussels and scallops. They also carry frozen products like ready made seafoood dishes and specialty items such as black truffles (25-99$ depending on size of jar). Also octopus ink! A little pricey (about 24$ a jar) but oh so good for making a traditional paella negro. Fuggedaboutit'

Yelp
Big fish store with a gourmet grocery component. They had good prices on fresh fish and everything looked much fresher than seafood at other places, ie. Atwater market. A big variety of fresh fish, and oysters. They'll let you try some oysters before you buy. Prices are fair considering the freshness. I took home some raw organic salmon for tartare that was still good the next day. Feel free to ask them any questions as they are pretty knowledgeable, they even have their own cookbook for sale. Check out their website for weekly specials.

Yelp
Best fish store in Mtl I have visited to date. Prices are fair given quality and freshness but a bargain it isn't (do you really want to eat cheap fish?). On site cleaning and prep should you purchase the entire fish but not know what to do with it.

Yelp
Lovely people, tasty underwater friends, good prices, condiments and other stuffs. The formula for awesome. P.S. I just stuffed my face with Kumamoto oysters...I'm mega sad they're all gone...I see another trip to La Mer in the near future.

Yelp
Lots of variety and long hours of operation. Parking is a breeze with their free parking lot which is tough to find in that area. The staff knows everything about what they sell. Although the prices can be a bit steep, it's expected from a specialised store like La Mer, not to mention the freshness of it all! Only reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wish their restaurant was open .

J S.

Yelp
Freshest in Montreal. Today we got a whole 3kg octopus! So delicious!!

Yelp
Fantastic selection of fresh fish. I normally buy my fish in mile end, but realize this is likely the source of most fish in Montreal. Lots if variety to pick from with a grocery to compliment the seafood selection. Very friendly staff. A must for seafood lovers who like to cook at home.

Yelp
love it, the most variety you can get in Montreal. it is a but more pricey but worth it. i got clams, salmon, balsamic oil it was all to my expectation.
