This restaurant is one of Magda Gessler's restaurants. If you are Polish or have lived in Poland, you are probably familiar with her and her television program. You know her high expectations. You know her penchant for well-cooked food. You know that if it doesn't live up to her ruthless judgment, then well it wouldn't have her name on it.
So why not more than three stars?
1. It's in the old town and is a tourist destination. Despite the typical laid-back eating experience you usually get in Polish restaurants, I felt we were simultaneously ignored and rushed out the door. I don't know how that's possible.
2. The food is OK. I mean, it's good, but it's not even what you'd typically expect for a tourist location. No pierogi on this menu. Bigos? I didn't see it. Of course there was kaszanka (how often do you see that on a menu?) and kotlet schabowy (pork chop) and a good selection of traditional soups. The food was tasty, though in comparison to other places, I don't know if was special.
3. Service was standard for the Polish experience. There's a bit of standoffishness that is par for the course. They take their time... so be prepared.
I was expecting more from this place since it is Magda Gessler's. The food was good, but I think that it could have been even better. As a decent place to go in the old town and marketed to tourists, I think it is worthy of three stars.
