Critic William Sitwell on His Book, ‘The Restaurant’

"Presented as an archetypal ancient eatery from Pompeii, this inn is used in the book to illustrate the long history of dining out; Sitwell highlights it as one of a handful of notable, historically significant establishments that anchor his two-millennium sweep and to show how public eating places once shaped social and culinary life." - Joshua David Stein

The b&b is situated in a side road, up 3 floors. Not much curb appeal. So I mean this wasn't the BEST welcome. Our taxi driver dropped us off, he waited for us, we had buzzed the bell and had no response twice. The taxi driver called the owner (speaking the lingo) and we were allowed up into the building. Once then inside on the 3rd floor, we had to call the owner as he was not on site to check us in (we were slightly early like 13.50) didn't answer the first few calls, however he turned up after we made him aware. We booked the "quad" room and we were told he had made a mistake as there's only two of us we have to have the double room. We were obviously disappointed as we like space and it was the room we had booked and paid for (despite it only being for 2 of us). After a lengthy discussion we reluctantly agreed to stay in the only room, the double room. Other options would cost more - like going to another hotel.  Due to staying in a double and not the quad room i expressed disappointment and the owner then offered €60 working out as €20 per night. He did initially agree to €70 but then backtracked as he said lost commission due to being on booking.com? Room overall modern looking and clean. There's no tea and coffee in the room (which it is advertised online as).  The tea cups were small. It even said mini-bar in the room and there isn't. Chose to keep own stuff in room (not shared kitchen). WiFi is free and if you DID have a car there is a lot of parking available opposite. People's voices echo from the kitchen. Some people had their phones playing music or videos one evening and it could be heard through a shut door. Very noisy. The toilet seat lid was broken and we made the owner aware, he seemed fine with it and replied "I know". Should be a decent shelf to use which isn't the towel rack which is quite high up. Or more hooks near the door. The room itself is not soundproof and noises can be heard, like toilets flushing, people in the hall or kitchen talking. Room was cleaned daily which is good. The beds and pillows were comfy. The beds are long which is good. Kitchen area is good to use, but annoying having to keep leaving room for a brew. Kitchen works on a "honesty box" format (though CCTV covered the area and there is a price list) - cutlery and plates can be used. There's small foods and butter and milk. Due to the room issue "tea" was offered as free to us, which was a nice gesture very much used as British folk. No price on the bread slices or squares of butter, or small items (croissants or Nutella). Worked out supermarket price and averaged out what we used. There is an oven and electric hob to use. There was washing up liquid, but no dishcloths, (there was a scourer), no tea towels, no substantial pans or even a pizza cutter (in Italy!) so cooking tools are limited. No draining rack when washing your own dishes but there is a dishwasher. There is a balcony to sit on, it does link with the other customers room too. So whilst you can sit outside it isn't completely private! The hooks to keep the shutters in place were broken so had to wedge them open with the chairs to get some light in the room.

The place has a very good location, a couple of minutes walk from the Pompei train station and to the Pompei Archeological Parc, in the neighnorhood there is a market. The room was clean, good for travelling with children, there were toiletries, bath towels, coffee and snacks for money (but the prices were very low). The host was very nice and pleasant. We enjoyed the stay.

Great location. Comfortable room and bed. Friendly and helpful owner. Easy access to Pompeii. Shopping and restaurants within short walk. Our room had a balcony overlooking a small garden with lemon and orange trees. We would definitely return.

Can’t say enough about host Sebastiano. He was friendly, attentive and very helpful. He advised me on how to get from Naples to the inn. When I got on the wrong train, he sent me instructions and a list of trains I could take. He then offered to pick me up from the train station which I so appreciated since I was worn out from all my troubles. I also booked a ride with him to the Naples airport. My room in the inn was very nice with a lovely balcony with a view of Vesuvius. Location was in walking distance to restaurants and Pompeii ruins. There was a kitchen where you could sit. Kitchen was stocked with breakfast items, coffee, tea, water, etc. This was my only disappointment. I had expected a fresh breakfast where I would be served. But for the price, you couldn’t beat it. If traveling by car, there is free parking.

The guy we booked with was really helpful with his instructions and came out to welcome us. The room was a good size and had very comfortable sleeping.

I stayed here from the 15th october to the 19th october with my boyfriend.||Before arriving we had Salvatore able to contact us through whatsapp, we asked if he could pick us up from the airport which he did, such a big help to us and he did it happily.||We were able to whatsapp him any time of day or night and he would help us, could not of asked for a better host.||The rooms were incredible, with a beautiful balcony looking over at Vesuvius, we were also able to find an English channel on the tv with shows and movies which was great!||Its a 10 minute walk to Pompeii, a quick train ride to Sorrento and not far from mt Vesuvius if you would like to go see those things like we did.||The beds were super comfy and had a great air con, you were also able to have breakfast, we didn't but it was available if we wanted anything.||The bedrooms were cleaned every day and would be smelling so fresh and clean!||When we left we also asked for a ride back to the airport, he was unable to do it himself but had one of his colleagues take us for a discounted price which again was amazing.||only thing i will say is that because we were the first room, is was very noisy in the morning with people with their suitcases and eating breakfast, but as i said we were the first room so it couldn't be helped! ||||This place is so worth it, wonderful people and a city full of history and culture!||looking forward to returning!
