Yelp
This was the single worst food experience of my life. Pompeii is located on a small corner in downtown Los Altos, and much like its namesake, is a catastrophic disaster. Parking is plentiful and close, but why you would actually choose to go there is beyond me.
In order to give some perspective on the ambience, let me start by saying almost every guest there either didn't exist two years ago, or won't exist in two years. That is to say, almost nonexistent. The restaurant is separated into two shabby dining rooms that leave much to be desired in terms of decoration. The whole restaurant feels like it's stuck in the 1980's, and not in a good way. The cheap-looking paintings hanging on the wall only detract from the experience.
Food. The one core tenet that binds all restaurants together is sadly not executed well here. We started with a crusty, biscuit-like bread that had none of a good biscuit's fine qualities. It tasted obviously stale and seemed to be at a similar age to the olive oil tomato mush that accompanied it. This miserable excuse for a bread course was not helped by the fact that the tomato mush looked like things were growing in it. The garlic bread, the best tasting part of the meal, was burnt on the top, leaving very little actual garlic flavor. I then ordered the "Butternut Squash Ravioli Special", which tasted like it had been sitting in the freezer section at Safeway for goodness knows how long. This was worsened by the soggy fried sage topping it. Needless to say, we skipped dessert.
Their wine selection alone made this experience a miserable excuse for an Italian restaurant. Few options, disgusting options, you know the drill.
The service left plenty to be desired as well. Apart from the inattentive servers, our plates did not properly accommodate our dietary preferences. One of the people dining with me asked for no capers with their fish dish. This, of course, didn't happen. She had to send the plate back, which was embarrassing for us as well as the staff.
Seriously, don't waste your time here. If you want good Italian food, please for the love of god do not go anywhere near this restaurant, which serves pineapple pizza. If you want good Italian food, Napoletana Pizzeria near World Market is the place to go.
