The historic Cankilian Thoppu, also known as Sangiliyan Thoppu or Poothathamby Arch, is a remarkable heritage site located in Nallur, in the heart of the Jaffna peninsula, Sri Lanka. 🇱🇰
This ancient archway is believed to be the entrance façade of the palace of Sangili II, the last king of the Jaffna Kingdom. Some historians also suggest it may have belonged to a mansion owned by a local administrator during the Dutch colonial period.
The structure beautifully reflects a blend of architectural influences. While rooted in local Tamil design traditions, certain features resemble Dutch East India Company-era colonial aesthetics, highlighting the cultural interactions that shaped Jaffna’s history.
Recognizing its historical importance, the site was officially declared a protected archaeological monument in 2007. Today, the original arch is carefully preserved under a modern metal roof structure to safeguard it for future generations.
A visit to Cankilian Thoppu is like stepping back in time — a quiet yet powerful reminder of Jaffna’s royal past and colonial encounters. If you’re exploring Nallur, this hidden historical gem is definitely worth a stop! ✨
