15 Wonderfully Repurposed Places

"The set from Robert Altman’s film Popeye, shot in Malta, was never fully struck and remains on the island as a sort of misplaced relic. The live-action film based on the popular comic strip and animation character, a spinach-loving sailor, marked the film debut of Robin Williams in the title role. Over 20 wooden structures were built with the tree trunk logs imported from Holland and wooden shingles brought in from Canada, making the town quite the production. Eight tons of nails and 250 gallons of paint were used in constructing the set, and a 250-foot breakwater was built to protect the filming area from the high seas. The film itself was a box-office bomb. But rather than tearing the set down or leaving it abandoned, the islanders saw it for what it was: a pre-built theme park. They eventually took over the abandoned set, hired actors, and the Popeye Village was born." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Very charming and situated around the beautiful blue water. Visited as an adult couple without kids, so didn’t really do any particular activities, but it’s such a nice area to just walk around, especially if you’re interested in films. There is also a beach so you can bring swim-wear. I wouldn’t plan a whole day around it, but it’s worth a visit, and easy to get to like most places in Malta.

Just visited Popeye Village in November. We went mainly to walk around the outside and take pictures. We did not pay the admission to enter. We didn't have our swimsuits or any children with us so figured it wouldn't be worth spending the money. I'm sure a family with kids would love it here. The buildings are unique and I'm glad we came. Even without entering I got some great pictures.

Looks lovely, the buildings look like they need a bit of repair. Some of it felt unsafe so we didn't go everywhere. Most were fine. The bay is stunning and urges you to swim in it ...then you see all the garbage floating in it ....bags, bottles , rusty bits... The village itself is pretty and staff are lovely but maybe they could pull the rubbish out of the water...yuck.

I agree with others that you should not miss this place if you are in Malta. If you loved the movie and/or Robin Williams himself, or you are with children, this place is a must have for sure. But it's fun even without children, just bring your inner child! Although the village itself is not super huge, there is plenty of things to do! Don't forget to bring your swim dress, as swimming in the lovely bay adds a lot to the experience! But the best thing about this place is the attitude of the staff. You just feel that they love what they do, and they care about providing a very good experience for the visitors. The place is incredibly well maintained, and the regular shows are amazing. It's so refreshing to find a small gem like this with such high quality standards. They definitely deserve your time!

I had so much fun! There was a secret chest hunt, and after we found all three clues, we were led to a chest with a lobby inside — that was such a great surprise. The animators were very funny and entertaining. We also had lunch there; the prices were fair, and the food quality was good. We had a couple of drinks as well, and they were quite cheap. We stayed from 1 o’clock until the very end. With every ticket, you get one free popcorn and one free postcard. Overall, it was a great experience!

Very pretty place. We came around 4pm so there was not much people and also we had opportunity to watch the sunset from the village and if you go out from village you can go to the mountain across to watch the most beautifully golden sunset ever. Popeya village has different acts with actors that are alive and fun. You get free popcorn with your ticket that you get as you watch the show. Also if you came alone its not a problem for pictures because on every corner there's these phone holders helping you to take your picture. P.s. there's a swing that you can sit and watch the sunset and for best picture set your phone behind you.

Very nice place to visit with your friends the village itself is very small, but you can do water sport activities such as stand-up paddle boarding. You can also rent a boat and go on a tour and also go parasailing. we weren’t during the off-season so it wasn’t very busy to get in but we were there at 9:30 and we were first in the door so it was nice to have the place for ourselves for a few minutes to take photos. I would recommend taking the canoe or kayak or send a paddle board to the caves because you can paddle yourself right into the cave.

Visiting Popeye Village in Malta was a fantastic experience. The colorful wooden houses by the sea look like a real life movie set and the views over the bay are breathtaking. The staff are cheerful, the music is fun and the whole place has a playful relaxing vibe that makes you feel like a kid again.
