POPO'S Fiesta Del Sol

Great anniversary dinner. Our first time here. We were originally seated at a table that was in the corner but the waitress thought we might be more comfortable at a table with better view of TVs and just overall vibe of restaurant. Service was great. Food was really good. We are always on the search for the best shredded beef taco and cheese enchilada along with chips and salsa. We would say 9 out of 10. Can't say enough about the service too!

Popos service team is excellent. Always smiles. Very tentative. Never an empty cup. The chips come out of the fryer hot, and the salsa tastes fresh every time. The food, delicious. The food hasn’t come out sloppy, or a plated mess of food that seeps into itself. The burritos don’t fall apart. And the ingredients taste fresh. The tamales is cooked with not to much masa but just the right amount and the right amount of meat filling. The fajitas out perfectly every time I have ordered it. You gotta get out there and try this place.

I can certainly see why these guys have such a great review! We had the rolled quesadillas and man was they delicious! Portions were huge. The tequila selection is limited but still managed to pull off a Don Julio skinny margarita. If they would upgrade tequila to Don Julio 1942 or Clase Azul reposado they would definitely earn my return visits.

So Popos is a great Family Restaurant. There is alot of seating. I never had to wait to long to be seated. The house margaritas are $7 from 3p to 6p Happy Hour. I ordered Tostada, Machaca taco and cheese enchilada combo. Didn't realize you have to order rice beans separate. My friend order spinach enchilada rice beans. We were pleased with our meals. You also get chips a.d salsa. The waitress was nice and friendly. The Atmosphere was warm and friendly also. Warning ⚠️ House margaritas is strong ❤️🙂 1 was enough for me.

Came here a couple times and the food is always fresh and delicious. The bathrooms are pretty clean. The service is decent depending on who you get.

This place has been open for over 20 years and it never disappoints. I haven’t been back to Phoenix, AZ for over 5 years and the food is still as good as I can remember. I highly recommend the mini chimichangas with shredded beef and a side of jalapeño cream cheese.

Both the Red Chili Beef and the Ground Beef Chimichangas Enchilada Style are fantastic. The Red Chili Cheese Enchiladas are Great and the Red Chili Beef plate with Rice and Beans is amazing. I absolutely love the hot sauce and the jalapeno cream cheese is to die for. I returned to Arizona and stopped in at Popo's for my favorite Groind Beef Chimichanga. As always it was amazing. The staff is always friendly and the food is always hot and fresh.

Been coming here for a few years with my family. Great food! Never had a bad meal here. We always take out of town guest here too.

Had lunch at Popos Fiesta del Sol. They start by bringing you chips and salsa. Chips were perfectly fried and went well with the chips. I went with the carnitas sizzling plate. It came with your choice of tortillas, side of beans or rice, and a salad. The carnitas were juicy and tasty. They were not over cooked which happens a lot. The veggies were also great. Over all Popos was a good. Also be ready for their large menu

Javier was great! He served us, a small party of six, four different checks and he got everything correct! The place was packed and then we were the last to leave, sorry! Just a couple of friends catching up lol I had the albondigas soup and a side of roasted vegetables with an additional taco which I never ate because my eyes were bigger than my stomach! Sorry, it was weeks ago so no photos!

Quick lunch stop off and a colleague frequents this joint, and I know why... good carnitas, warm soft tortillas, wonderful smooth beans, and pico that is just right. Unfortunately it was a work lunch so I didn't try the margaritas, but everything else was good! Ambiance is strip mall hideaway, service was prompt and friendly, and prices were in line with the area... if I'm back, I'm back!

Arrived in Arizona and requested some authentic Mexican food and my cousin took me to Popo's. I ordered chicken tacos with rice and beans. The plate was super hot and the food was delicious. I also ordered 2 frozen strawberry margaritas. Those margaritas were perfect after traveling and arriving to 110 degree weather. Popo's is decorated really cute! Everyone that assisted us at the restaurant were all pleasant!

It is always the 1st place I go to when I am here. Love the perfect warm chips and both salsas. We had awesome margaritas and I had red chili combo that reminds me of my Nana's! I have had many dishes over the years - I also recommend the machaca tacos/ chicken tacos/ enchiladas/ rice/ beans/ fried ice cream! Basically everything on the menu is YUM The service is friendly and quick!

It turns out that good Mexican food is not common in the west valley. That's not just my opinion, it's a sentiment voiced by scores of residents. We're about 50 miles from the Mexican border, and we have no great food to show for it. Until Popo's. Popo's is an institution in the Phoenix area. There are two of them on Indian School, both of them in "iffy" areas replete with pawn shops, check cashing, and homeless. However their food is famous for being some of the best family-style, traditional, almost-like-TexMex Mexican food around. Their clientele is blue-collar, families, all races, rich and poor. There's a reason they've been around some 40 years. They just took over the old Cantina Gueros spot near McDowell and Estrella. And not has it been a success! Place is packed at every hour. And the reason? The food. Popo's excels in a lot of ways, but it starts with their salsa and chips. They serve plenty of it, without the chintzy frugalness of many Mexican restaurants. Chips are hot and fresh and the salsa is excellent. Not too spicy and not too bland. It's cold and always delicious. Then, their rice and beans are excellent. You can tell a lot about a restaurant by their rice and beans. If those are crappy, all of it will be crappy. Popo's has excellent, flavorful beans, and fresh, tender "Spanish" rice. But what really excels here are the carnitas. Huge chunks of hot, perfectly cooked, flavorful pork carnitas with the crispy edges and alllllll the fat. They're scrumptious. Best around. Served in several plates, combos, appetizers, burritos, and more. Ya can't go wrong. Some other EXCELLENT selections: the chili relleno. Coated with egg and tender and full of flavor. Yum. The enchiladas- all of them. Can't go wrong. Fajitas are fairly standard but are really good nonetheless. Huevos rancheros are some of the best I've had. All the tacos are just great. And the flautas are fat and full of meat. You'll be happy with anything you order. So when you've given up on Mexican food, come to Popo's. Your taste buds will be glad you did.

Great customer service ! Either in for a quick lunch or a large party. Food was amazing fast HOT and on point! Definitely will be back. LARGE portions so you can share!

This place is kind of a hole in the wall that you would just pass by but DON'T!!! The food is excellent! The service was beyond good. The flavors of each food item was exceptional. Even the rice was exceptional. We drove from Tempe because my sister recommended this place. It was well worth the drive. Even the chips were tasty. Food was so good, I forgot to take pics. Lol!

Came in for lunch with my daughter. We ordered lunch combo pick on with a chicken flauta! I did the rolled Steak Quesadilla! Both dishes were nice portions. We had plenty to pack up to. ~Chips and Salsa delicous! ~Chips were crispy and sturdy! ~Salsa was flavorful with a small kick. My Blood Orange Margarita was sweet but tasty! The gentlemen waiting on us was delightful! It was alittle pricey but again a nice amout of food!

Felt very unwelcome. They gave us the check after 20 minutes of being there and the food wasn't the best

Whatever you do, don't go her for menudo! Tasted like can, with only 4 small pieces of meat that chewed like bubble gum. So disappointing! Also took over an hour to bring out 2 bowls and a quesadilla!

Me and my family always go here and we love the mini platter. Definitely recommend the mini platter!

We used to drive from Gilbert for over a decade to eat here The service and food have seriously gone downhill. We kept going back, hoping for a different outcome, but it just steadily got worse. I strongly suggest giving their Glendale or Goodyear venues a try as the staff are so much better and you can tell they take pride in their food preparation. Our last outing, we just had them throw almost all of our cold food in the garbage, couldn't get our drinks refilled and finally just had to go to the hostess stand to pay as our waitress just disappeared after the food was delivered.

The food was good, but highly disappointed in how they handled my order. I ordered the fajitas for $22.95. When my bill came they charged me for a full order at $40. So for lunch I ended up paying forty dollars for food I only ate half of. The server should have clarified, we even spoke with a manager when the bill arrived. So between me and my husband we ended up paying $66 for lunch.

Service was really efficient, waiters were nice and the food was brought out fast. The chips and salsa were yummy!

This place is THE BEST!!! The service is absolutely outstanding and the food is hot and very, very good!! I wish there were more parking so more people could come and enjoy this unicorn of a restaurant

Took a chance on this place while visiting on vacation. Did not disappoint! The staff was wonderful and the food choices were plentiful!

The restaurant is ok. The wait staff is polite. The guys at the front, I suppose they're the hosts. Rude. Our food was hot and tasty. The waiter was really nice. The two morons at the front door.... Rude little high school twits.

After reading previous reviews, my family and I wanted to see for ourselves. The service was very friendly and efficient. Bring your appetite when you come!! The portion sizes are HUGE!!! The machaca and carne asada had great flavor...rice and beans are also good. Had a very good experience here, will definitely be coming back :)

I've been to Popo's several times and always have a FULLfilling experience. They pile on the crispy tortilla chips and delicious salsa, then your meal comes, and it's a lot of food. This time, I had the fajitas with steak and carnitas. It came sizzling on a hot plate. The meat was tender and flavorful. The veggies are not overcooked. The beans they served were a little too dry, but I didn't go for only the beans. Victoria, our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. We always had full drinks and endless salsa and chips. The restaurant was getting crowded when we arrived, but the 5 of us were seated immediately. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the interior is well decorated.

We went in and there were a couple of large parties waiting. When one party got sat first the other party was upset and made a scene. The staff handled themselves professionally and even apologized to the people that had their meals interrupted by the screaming. Overall the food was delicious and the service was great. Our sever Alexis, was friendly and knowledgeable on the menu. Staff made sure we had chips and salsa on the table. Definitely going back for more.

Food's great, but I found a part of a broken black bobbypin in my food. I didn't see any hair, but still pretty gross. Everything else is fine, customer service, wait time, everything was great. I don't know who made the food but I was there Dec 29th at around 3-4pm.

Been to Popo's a handful of times. Overall good Mexican food when fresh. Ive had their tacos dining in and they were tasty. Took take out as my most recent visit and ordered the seafood enchiladas and a chimichanga. Chimichanga was over cooked and heavy on the salt for the carne asada. Rice was good but the beans were not good. The texture was really off and seemed like old refried beans. As for the enchilada, I've never heard of a seafood enchilada before and this is probably the best combination I've had in an enchilada. Really tasty and worth getting again.

Excellent food great service!! A lot bigger than it looks from the outside. The Margaritas were awesome too! Will keep POPOS on the rotation!

I have been eating here nearly 40 years. I get the same thing every time - Red Chile Burro. Last few times I've been in, it has been excessively hot and spicy. Too dang hot to enjoy. What happened? Why the change?

Food was excellent! I highly recommend the seafood enchiladas! It was a perfect balance of Mexican flavors and seafood merging together in a most satisfying meal. Great dining experience

This place was crowded for it being a Thursday night at 7pm so I knew I was in for a treat. The pomegranate margaritas is unbelievably good, which makes it dangerous. No regrets getting one though. Portions are huge and I love my Machaca chimichanga. I usually don't like rice, but theirs was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Teenage son agreed. Huge portions. He couldn't finish his Complete plate, which was bigger than my plate. Daughter loved her chicken taco with my sour cream. If we lived closer, I'd like to say we'd be back but we live in Gilbert. One day I'll make my way back.

I was in town for a few days and wanted some Mexican food and went to Pop's Fiesta Del Sol because it had a great rating. The place was pretty busy for a Wednesday night and there's limited parking so I'm not sure if I'd try to go on a Friday or Saturday. Pros: I thought the food was good, and the salsa was fresh; the house margarita was one of the best I've ever gotten, tasty and strong; most places the house margarita is weak & water down, but not here and for happy hour it was only $5, they're 5stars. The exterior & interior are old and worn but didn't give me any pause or concerns about eating there. Cons: Service was the issue here, when I sat down one lady took my drink order and I requested the spinach con queso and she said "OK" but she never brought it, after a bit of a wait another lady came over to take my order and I asked about the spinach con queso and she said it's coming and I also ordered the Carnitas Tacos . A couple minutes later she brought out what I think she called a cheese crisp (size of a small pizza a large tortilla with cheese melted on top and it was brought out on a pizza pan). I told her I didn't order that and reiterated the spinach con queso and she promptly brought me the spinach con queso, it was just ok. I ordered a second margarita no salt, but received one with salt. A few minutes later she brought my tacos and they were the Carne Asada tacos, not what I ordered and not a big fan but I ate them anyway. So to sum it up, margarita's were great, food ok but considering I didn't get what I ordered not a fair assessment, the service definitely needs work. I'll try again next time I'm in town because of the pluses I stated above and we'll see if the service is better. I'll update this post after my next visit and see if we can bump up their stars

Going downhill! Using bad lard for the beans. Beans are dark in color with no flavor. Went to cheap chips from La Canasta thin to thick non salted regular everyday pen chips. I judge a Mexican Restraint by their chips and salsa! Skimping on products to save money. I'd rather pay a $1 or &2 more than lose the quality and flavor of my favorite go to!

It has been 3 months since my last visit. In that time the prices have gone up to such ridiculous levels, that this is definitely my last. 2 tacos and rice, $20! Mexican Pizza Appetizer, $19! Small serving of Fajitas, $22! Good food, not absolutely amazing to charge these prices. Has anybody there checked your competitors prices lately?

I always enjoy the food here. We got in on a Friday night in 20 minutes drinks came right away with chips and salsa. The food was out fast and oh so good. You will enjoy this restaurant

My favorite Mexican restaurant in town! Been here many times. Always a pleasure. Sad that I bought a gift card and they haven't honored it yet. But I always go back!

Ok this place is pure ! Took my boo thang and the two Ks Sunday for dinner. Had to celebrate our blessings with some legit Chicano comida. I'm be honest, neighborhood isn't the burbs but don't let the liquor store crowd scare you. Inside these walls awaits Mexican food heaven. We always get the cheese crisp with green chiles. . Some of the best machaca I've had. Few of those tacos. . Being Sunday I had to get the red menudo! And it was !! Tons of homony. My favorite little buddy even said the virgin pina colada was on point. She snapped it to Kagen. Highly recommend!

Stopped in for lunch. Quick service. Friendly staff. Ordered the super burrito with shredded chicken and it was exactly what I needed. Their habanero salsa is out of this world. Beer was cold. Definitely a good find!

I'm pretty sure I happened to have visited here years ago as this is my supervisor's most favorite, local. Since moving, he is recently in town & suggested dinner at Popo's- perfect "Labor Date" for Labor Day! It was just as good as the last round. We were promptly seated. Chips & salsa were promptly delivered as our drink orders were taken. (Although, I find it odd one needs to request water- shouldn't that be a given? And, it was barely iced with a lingering taste of dishwater. No bueno.) BUT, the margaritas hit the spot! For the most part. I don't think there was much tequila in mine as there was flavoring. I had the Prickly Pear. It was good flavor for sure, but severely lacking on the alcohol content. It may as well had been a virgin because it seems like I got a pear flavored slushee. My companion ordered the Cadillac on the rocks and seemed to be satisfied with his. He had the #9 chili relleno combo, which is generally my go-to favorite. I opted for the El Pollo Especial Muy Rico, which is similar to a popular dish at another entity. Lucky me, I got to try both (well, we both swapped to share & try) and it was a hard toss between which was better! There are pros and cons here. First, I could tell the food was pre-made. Because it came out in less than 15 minutes from placing our order. Piping hot! But, it was definitely pre-made & re-heated. Usually that would be a killer, however, it was still REALLY good & some of the better dishes I've tried. The chicken in mine was tender & well shredded. Adequate amount of sauce/topping. Maybe a little too much flour tortilla that was a bit soggy, but it came together well. So did the chili relleno. Not TOO much cheese (is there even such a thing?!), and the pepper had a nice kick without being too overpowering. The sides of rice & beans compliment well- both have decent flavor & texture instead of the bland, old sides you usually get elsewhere. Overall, it was a really pleasant dinner at a nice little hole-in-the-wall that is often overlooked. The staff were great! Polite, attentive & good sense of humor. The prices are pretty fair & standard against competition & you get quality in exchange. I wish there was a location closer to the East Valley area, because I would visit a lot more often! Complimentary, bottomless chips & salsa are also a staple. I'm surprised I didn't try to hoard those to-go with my leftovers!

So when you drive here you will be questioning things but inside is much more inviting with friendly staff. If you have a party of 5 or more your entire party will need to be there BEFORE you can get a table or more importantly a margarita...just be prepared. The food was good and portions are huge. I just got the chicken Mimi chimis and you can totally split that and be more then full. Overall a decent experience but not exceptionally note worthy.

Have not been here in years!! Boy we have been missing out. Kaylin was our waitress, she was so pleasant and attentive. But great servers always are. We had the quesadilla with green onions and tomatoes. So tasty. Along with the spinach and queso served with a platter full of deep fried tortilla wedges it was great. I had a bowl of the chicken tortilla soup which was so flavorful. If and when we get our two weeks of winter here I will be sure to stop by for this great soup. Kind of hidden at the end of a small strip of stores this place has withstood the test of time and covid. Stop by and try this place. You will be glad you did.

I would like to thank Marcus the hostess. Ginny and Caesar for making my son's birthday fantastic last evening. It was a great family time. The service was incredible. The ambiance was fantastic. Everything went perfect. And I am so grateful. My food was great. They kept the chips and salsa coming. Because of the service that we received yesterday, we will be forever customers.

I've been a customer of Popo's for over 20 years but NO MORE. Went to location on 67th Ave and Indian Sc. Rd for lunch today and got fajitas and asked for some extra onions and when I got my bill I was charged $ 3 for a side of grilled onions. I asked to speak to Mgr. and Lauri the day Mgr. came out and I explained the situation to her and she was rude and stated that they just can't give stuff away and I told her that if their going to up charge for items they should tell people so and informed her that she just cost them to loose a customer of over 20 yrs and her response was so what ! I called back and talked to one of the owners Vickie and she explained that they normally don't tell people of up charges and I told her that I should have the final say if I want to pay extra for something or not. She didn't seem to care much either. You can tell the economy is good in the area right now as businesses don't give a shit if they loose a customer or not but lets see what happens when the economy slows down !!!

Best fish tacos in Phoenix!!! The people are super friendly and warm. Great atmosphere.

I absolutely love it when the menu item you order exceeds your expectations! My first experience here turned out to be very good so I reckon I will return. The service was good and I was impressed by the quality of the chips and the flavor of the salsa. I ordered the grilled tacos with chicken fajitas and veggies on the side()-mucho veggies! What a pleasant restaurant I discovered and I even stumbled upon a decent pawn shop next door on my walk to Popo's where I am sure to return for more purchases.

My brother in law hyped this place up and just sadly wasn't the best for me buuuuut !!! The place and staff were awesome and every one enjoyed the food ! I just had wished my monster burrito had a bit more meat as it was mostly beans but it was a great night !

Horrible management. Their customer service has gone way down hill. They are opening a new restaurant and are training chefs but apparently that means the customers have to lag for their fuck ups. Spent $50 for my entire order to be wrong and when I got home the manager on duty said there's nothing we can do. What the hell do you mean? It's your job to ensure the order is correct, especially when customers are driving 30 minutes one way. I will be disputing the charge with my bank and they lost a loyal family since 2008 as a customer.

I had 6 people at my table so tip was 20% mandatory. I waiter was rude but he knew he was getting a good tip from our table. Then I try to redeems my reward cash. They told my system was down I have $20.00 credit but I will never go back again.

Thank you to my best friend for taking me to this place! Love everything about this place! The waitresses all so kind and helpful when asked about the food! I ordered mini chimichangas half chicken and the other beef for appetizers those hit the spot could go back just for those as a whole meal! I was really craving a albondigas soup so I had to get it. The soup was a 7/10 get like it was a small size, more vegetables would've been better. The margaritas were 10/10 great on alcohol and on the flavor. They even have a point system! Loke what that's cool! Pricing wise it's not expensive, pretty average.

I have been going to Popo's since the 90's. One of the best Mexican restaurants in town. I do dialysis at home. I called them this past Sunday for a takeout order. The gentleman that answered the phone was very nice and knowledgeable on the menu. He made recommendations too. Very helpful. I got the chimichanga covered in red enchilada sauce with rice and beans. OMG this had to be the best chimichanga I have ever had in my life. I got the machacha and it melted in my mouth. The serving size was huge! I am still enjoying the same meal 2 days later. It's nice to know there's still family owned restaurants in town that have amazing people and amazing food.
