Our post-Valentine's adventure finally brought us to Porky Butts BBQ--a spot we'd been meaning to try forever. The stars aligned, and we pulled into a packed parking lot. Fortunately, most people were waiting on to-go orders, so we didn't have to fight for a table.
Since we're no amateurs (and I never walk into a restaurant without scoping out the menu first), I knew exactly what I wanted. The staff was hustling, with a sea of paper tickets hanging up, but we were greeted with a smile and asked what they could make fresh for us--major points for that!
We ordered BBQ Boudin Balls, a Rib Plate with Brisket Chili and Potato Salad, and a Two-Meat Plate with Mac & Cheese and Apple Slaw. Oh, and two sodas--Coke Zero on tap (bless!). Total bill: $56--pretty reasonable considering the time and effort that goes into smoked meat.
The sauce lineup--Mild, Sassy, and Fiery--was put to the test immediately. I wish they provided chips to sample them instead of me resorting to using my finger, but hey, whatever works. Mild and Sassy were nearly identical, and while Fiery had some heat, spice lovers might find it a little tame.
Our BBQ Boudin Balls arrived quickly but without plates--just a tiny tray. BBQ is messy, and these little guys weren't the most structurally sound. That said, they had a smoky, burnt flavor that I actually enjoyed. Still, I'd probably go for a different appetizer next time.
Now, onto the main event. Our plates arrived with all the fixings--pickles, pickled onions, and a giant piece of cornbread (complete with butter and honey).
MVP of my plate? The catfish. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and absolutely perfect with the little tartar sauce/Tabasco concoction I whipped up. The pork was solid, but the catfish stole the show, so I didn't give it much attention.
As for the sides:
Mac & cheese - Cheesy but a little bland, even after a hit of salt and pepper.
Apple slaw - Soggy and flavorless; wouldn't get it again.
Cornbread - Sweet, cake-like, but served cold. Warming it up would have taken it to the next level.
Brisket chili - I stole a bite from my husband's plate, and wow--definitely ordering that next time!
All in all, it was a fantastic way to celebrate with my Valentine. Porky Butts BBQ lived up to the hype--some hits, some misses, but I'd happily go back to explore more of the menu!
