Originally known as Porta Comasina, this gate marked the northern entrance to Milan’s historic city walls. It was rebuilt between 1826 and 1828 in Neoclassical style to commemorate the visit of Emperor Francis I of Austria, with design by Giacomo Moraglia. The structure features a central Doric arch flanked by two smaller pedestrian passages. Between 1834 and 1836, matching customs buildings were added on either side to manage goods entering the city. In 1860, the gate was renamed Porta Garibaldi in honor of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the revolutionary hero of Italian unification.
