SONOMA COUNTY CITY GUIDE

"Portalupi Winery began many years ago in a small coastal town in Northern California where Tim Borges and Jane Portalupi first met as children. Destiny prevailed, they reunited in 2001 and were married. With Jane's background in retail marketing and Tim's 40 years of experience in winemaking in California, they decided their talents were the perfect complement to start Portalupi Wines. Portalupi Winery’s first release was in 2002 with a long-term goal to deliver exquisitely crafted wines worthy of their generation’s history of Italian winemaking. Walk ins are welcome and there is additional seating at our bar and private room."

Wonderful wine tasting experience!! We reserved a tour with Viator, Food/Wine pairings, so much fun. Our favorite stop was Portalupi. Tim, one of the owners was there to explain everything. Oh their Barbera is divine!! This was our first time to California wine country, so we loved hearing all the helpful info from an expert, he has a fun personality too. We are family now, joined the wine club, all set!

We had relatives come visit from out of state. This was a busy weekend due to the wine and food event in our area. The tasting room was very busy, but the staff, especially Jan, took the time to provide the key information that makes Portalupi Winery so special. As a result, you have increased your loyal supporter's group by a significant amount. And the wine was exceptional too!

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia…not at Portalupi…it’s Jan, Jan, Jan. If you haven’t visited, what are you waiting for. We had the best service from the whole team but Jan especially took great care of us. We had a charcuterie board (voted one of the best in Sonoma county), three cans of their incredible caviar, strawberry spritzes and of course their amazing wine. Portalupi is seriously the only place that we’re always treated like family. More than family actually. Go visit Jane, Tim, Carolyn, Aaron, John and of course Jan!!!! Get there soon, you won’t regret it!!!

We absolutely love Portalupi. The wines are excellent - but more importantly the Tasting Room Staff are amazing. Carolyn, Erin, Jan we love you. Definitely stop by and try their Barbera. It is excellent and a great buy. We’ve been members for a few years and like to visit at least once per month (ok, maybe weekly 😉). We call it ‘Our Cheers Bar’ as it feels like a community there.

A must visit when in Healdsburg. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Great selection of both whites and reds, we always buy a bottle or two after the tasting. They offer blind tastings as well which is great. Outdoor seating is fun and comfortable even in the cold thanks to heaters.

I happened to come back on a day they were, for the first time, trying an outdoor food service. I believe (could be wrong, usually am) the chef is "a" chef at or "THE" chef at "Guisa", Latin fusion restaurant not too far away. Him and his wife were serving two different types of Pupusas and a Cubano sandwich. Both were absolutely delicious!!!! The wines and service at Portalupi were nothing short of spectacular. Can't wait to go back again!!!

Google
This place is awesome. Lovely service with delicious wines and cheese plates, makes this one of a kind place to visit. Cozy and elegant, Portalupi offers a variety of wines, along with amazing gift options and a unique membership that provides you with access to some of the best wines of California. An absolute must for any wine lover who wishes to partake at an amazing wine tasting experience.

Don't taste this wine UNLESS you: 1) want to fall in love with THE BEST wine ever 2) want to ruin all other wines for yourself 3) want to drink cleanly processed, quality-made wine 4) want to crave it for the rest of your life. :) Also, the owners and every single one of the staff members are incredible humans. You're gonna love everything about Portalupi wine.

Yelp
We were a tad behind in our wine club pickups, and decided it was a great excuse to reconnect with some close friends to share some charcuterie, cheeses, and wine (of course). Dave was an awesome host who provided a comfortable atmosphere for us to relax and chat. The charcuterie / cheese board ($45) is highly recommended, with a generous selection of local salumi, cheeses, nuts, fruits and crackers. The wine flight was also amazing, starting off with some delicious bubbly (snag some of the 2023 for New Years if you can), then moving on to the tasting list and some outliers as well. It was the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season with friends. We're c

Yelp
S E R V I C E: Our server was pretty cool and informative. They had nice seating outside and it blocked the street and parked cars very nicely. They are dog friendly as well, and have water bowls available. Just be careful if you have a bigger dog, because the tables aren't that stable. W I N E: My favorite of the whole tasting was Nebbiolo. It almost tasted sparkling to me but had that smokey, sweet flavor. O V E R A L L: This is a pleasant place to be on a weekend if you want something that's relaxing and not too fancy.

Yelp
Portalupi Winery has always been a great spot to visit if strolling through downtown Healdsburg. Not only do they focus on standard varietals native to the area, but also some Italian varietals, which is awesome! For our tasting we arrived a tad early in hopes to beat rush of an event that weekend, but unfortunately it was a bit of a tight squeeze with a large crowd. Even with that said they still hosted us with ease, so three cheers to them for that! The owner and staff that assisted us were gems and enthusiastic about their wonderful wines! Having the ability to talk to owners of wineries and hearing the back story first hand is always a plus as the passion for the business is immense and draws you in. Fast forward to the setting, outdoor park let and small indoor seating area, which is usually always quite packed. Very spacious though where you are not packed on top of other guests. As for the wines, I've had them before at parties and they were just as good or maybe even better in person! Hands down my favorites were the bubbles and Zinfandel, pure perfection! Could not have asked for a better Sunday and looking forward to visiting again soon.

Yelp
What a super experience. We did a food and wine pairing that was so much fun. Started with a delicious white paired with arrancini and next had red blend paired with focaccia. Nutella donuts - Italian style - were paired with the last red. Also don't miss the wonderful liquore!!! The business has seating inside or outside. Very comfortable place to spend time! Very friendly helpful folks.

Lisa B.

Yelp
The food and wines are pretty good but the way we were treated was incredibly rude. I had sat outside specifically in the sun and one of the workers came and pulled the shades all around because others wanted shade- even though those people came after us. Didn't even ask or offer me a different seat.
google avatar

Yelp
Small intimate winery great wine selections. They have a wine tasting menu with both a 3 flight or a 6 flight option. Very cute interior and gracious staff. Service was top notch.

Yelp
We did a food and wine pairing at Portalupi and were extremely impressed. Aaron was very knowledgeable and made the whole experience enjoyable. Everything we tasted was delicious and we are big fans now.
google avatar

Chelle N.

Yelp
Such a great variety of wines. The food pairing was delicious! Gotta check out this winery if you're visiting Healdsburg. The wines are yummy and it's a more secluded winery. Love the wine history and thank you Dave for the excellent service you gave us. Definitely will spread the word to our friends and family.

Yelp
Great outdoor seating, very pretty. I love the barbera rose and Zinfandel. Tasting fee is waived if you buy a bottle so that's a great perk. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I always make sure to stop by when I am in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Stop by here to try some wine, they are in great location with outdoor sitting for my doggie . We did 6 types of wine tasting, every single one was good but my fav was Rose and Zinfandel. End up buying both of the bottle to go. Really enjoyed here, The guy server was attentive and friendly. Explained everything and knowledgable with each wine. Reasonable price of wine. I would definitely recommend everyone to come by here to try their wine. Thank you

Yelp
There is so much to say about this amazing spot. The wine (Vermentino is my fave), cocktails, the most amazing charcuterie board you will ever see...but what sets this place aside from everyone else is the amazing staff. Jane, Tim, Carolyn, Jan, Aaron, John and Dave will make you feel like family the minute you enter. You can't go wrong at Portalupi!!!

Yelp
BUBBLES! Did someone say BUBBLES? Stop #3 for us ladies and what a way to end the day! In addition to their counter service in front, they have a gorgeous private tasting room and a tasting table in their back area. Our leader had our tastings selected as we were graced with a flute of Rose' sparkling wine topped with - You'll not believe this! but a tab of cotton candy!!! What do you do with the cotton candy you ask? Well, you plunk it in your flute of rose! Interesting way to serve your bubbles! I was intrigued. I recommend you taste the Rose naked, bubbles only to get the full flavor and effect of the Portalupi Rose. Then! turn it into some fun and drop that cotton candy in your flute of bubbles and see what happens! Service excellent, Bubbles excellent, Concept with the cotton candy? Excellent Recommend

Yelp
We had a great wine and food tasting. The service was fantastic, the food was delicious and the wines were amazing! The history of the wine is so cool! We'll definitely be back!

Gail M.

Yelp
My sister and I recently enjoyed a food and wine pairing here and had a wonderful time! The food paired incredibly well with the wines and we left with several bottles of Barbera and Vaso di Marina (in a milk bottle, no less)! Aaron, our server, was outstanding! He was super friendly and shared many details of the history of the Portalupi family (including how the milk bottling came to be!) which made the wines even more special... and delicious! The indoor seating was very comfortable and accommodating (even for larger groups), and the outdoor seating was very popular, as well! Definitely worthy of a return visit!
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I had a fantastic wine tasting experience with Aaron. He was attentive, informative and took great care of us. We loved the wines so much we ended up bringing home several bottles. The caviar pairing was delicious too!

Yelp
Such a fun little tasting room nestled right in the heart of downtown Healdsburg! My friend and I came here for a tasting last year and we had such a fun time. Unlike many of the other tasting rooms in Downtown Healdsburg, Portalupi specializes in "Cal-Ital" wines which are essentially Italian varietals that are grown in California. I had actually never heard of the term Cal-Ital before I tasted here, but I'm a fan of Californian produced Italian wines. Their indoor tasting room is the cutest! It has some really chic decor, comfy sofas, and a beautiful chandelier that will definitely catch your eye as soon as you walk in. Since it was a beautiful day outside, we opted to sit on their super cute patio parklet! They really took their time putting together their parklet! Not only is it covered but it's spacious and also lighted. The owner Jane actually hosted us which was a real treat. It's rare to find the actual owner on site in tasting rooms these days, so we felt particularly special in this case. They have two different tasting options; 3 tastes for $15 or 6 tastes for $30. We decided to each do the 3 tastes (we were graciously given additional tastes by Jane though). You can also purchase wine by the glass here and they have cheese plates. When we saw that there was brie on the cheese plate, we had to get it. It was rather small for the price but still very tasty. They initially forgot to bring us crackers, but once Jane came over and realized that they were missing, she brought them to us right away. For my 3 wines, I chose to try their Vermentino, Barbera, and Zinfandel. The Vermentino was actually very good. It was citrusy, crisp, and easy to drink on that warm day. Jane actually poured two Barberas for me as I was interested in how the Mendocino Barbera would taste as I'm not used to seeing this variety in that wine region. The Barbera was from Amador county and they usually produce stellar Barberas. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the Barbera from Mendocino county more. It was softer, smoother, and fruitier than the one from Amador County. The winner hands down was their Zinfandel though. LOVED that Zin! It was a total Zin by definition. It was fruity, jammy, peppery on the finish and had some subtly acidity to it. I purchased it right away. When I find a good Zin, it's always finders keepers for this gal. Although it seemed to be pretty busy in the tasting room, Jane did a wonderful job of hosting us. You can tell that she's super passionate about what she does. All in all, this was such a fun experience. Will definitely be coming back soon on another tasting room excursion in Downtown Healdsburg!

Yelp
Fantastic service, story, staff, family, & wine. Everything is wonderful here. My only wish is that they had a vineyard I could visit everyday. :) Loved them so much we are now members.

Teresa G.

Yelp
Our group of 4 can't speak highly enough about our experience. Aaron made us feel comfortable and he was extremely informative and knowledgeable about the wines. One of our party had a gluten allergy and Aaron found the perfect pairings. This was our first time in Portalupi and we were blown away. I would highly recommend, this is a hidden treasure!

Sharlene M.

Yelp
Unbelievable! Aaron was so attentive & fun. The Wine here is amazing. The food pairing was so much fun and Aaron explained so much. I would come back any day. HIGHLY RECOMMEND to everyone!! They also worked with my gluten allergy so I wasn't left out of the wine and food pairing. This place is awesome!

Dylan G.

Yelp
Portalupi hands down has the best wine! The ambiance and service is always incredible too! Their charcuterie boards are a must when doing a tasting... you are in for a treat!

Kate K.

Yelp
I recently threw a surprise birthday party for my boyfriend at Portalupi! They did the best job helping me with the party. Everyone raved about the wines and really enjoyed themselves! Thank you Tim, Jane and Carolyn! The vibe was fun and inviting.

Yelp
Came here on a fun week away with girlfriends. Did the food and wine pairings.. wonderful history and interesting wines. Actually met and talked to the winemaker!
google avatar

Kelli H.

Yelp
Friendly service. Came in on a slow afternoon. We were greeted promptly and our server was talkative and friendly but also gave us space to just relax. We didn't feel like doing a tasting so we just ordered a glass. The space is on the small side with a cute outdoor patio area. It feels like a family tasting room and not pretentious. We were happy we came in and we were both happy with our glasses of wine.
google avatar

Alan M.

Yelp
My wife and I were gifted the wine and food tasting experience where 4 wines are paired with some delicious bites that complement the wine. Sparkling Barbera with arancini, Vasa do Marina Rosso with Focaccia bread, Pauli Ranch Barbara with Italian Meatball, Petit Syrah with Bombolini. Our server, Jan, was informative and cheerful throughout our time with her. I found the wines more closely resembling those of the old world with the layering and complexity vs. those same varieties usually found in the Sierra foothills.

Yelp
Portalupi, a slice of Italy in Sonoma County! I love their Cal-Ital concept, marrying the traditions of their Italian immigrant ancestors with the relaxed California lifestyle and the latest in winemaking techniques. We enjoyed all of their delicious Italian varietals, especially the Shake Ridge Ranch Barbera. Can't wait to get more! P.S. they sell #cheetos! #portalupiwine #calital #italianvarietals #shakeridgeranch #barbera #almadorcounty #healdsburg #sonomacounty #winetasting

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised with this spot. Got a free tasting for here after doing a time share presentation. The tasting had food pairings. Everything was very good and the service was excellent. Wine was delicious. Walked away with a couple of bottles and a recommendation to the restaurant.chef that made the food. Lucky we came upon this place.

Erika K.

Yelp
Had a lovely time here. The charcuterie board was delish, service was amazing, and the wine was good! The tasting was also priced very reasonably. Would definitely recommend

Yelp
Thanks to my sister in-law for setting up a wine tasting. The staff here know their product inside and out. We all walked away with a couple bottles of wine. When in Rome right? This is wine country, if you are in town and need a new place to check out, this is a great spot. Make sure to reserve a time. Cheers!

Mitzi A.

Yelp
Visiting Healdsburg and want an authentic wine tasting experience in town? Head straight to Portalupi. They have a great storefront location in the heart of town. You can sit in their patio or open air indoor seating area. Grab some awesome charcuterie for a nominal fee or even try the curated pop rock-strawberry white chocolate bark to go with their amazing rose bubbles! The Pinot noir is amazing as is the Barbera wines. Just try it all! #poursipsavor #kokoapproved

Caitlen P.

Yelp
Portalupi continues to be my most favorite winery ever! Maybe I'm biased because I'm a wine club member :) but the staff, wines and cheese boards go above and beyond any winery that I've been to. I love the family owned vibe and small facility as it allows for an intimate and personalized experience. I also appreciate that the owners are constantly there working hard and keeping the lovely energy and glasses flowing! Super fun to hear about their history! - the cheese boards are honestly unreal and customizable if you have an allergy or dietary restriction. - the Barberas are dramatically elegant and compared side by side are so fun!! - their bubbles are fantastic and definitely different than any that you'd normally reach for at a grocery store or beverage/liquor store! A must try if you're here! - the pours are generous and not the minuscule tastes at other wineries out and about in Sonoma and Napa county. - their mixed drinks are delicious and so fun - not your average winery or tasting room, these fun additions make the difference in your experience and they even sell milk jug type bottles of certain wines... SO CUTE!
google avatar

Aimee S.

Yelp
So welcoming to us and our children. Thankful for the opportunity. We enjoyed the wine and joined the club. Thank you for an enjoyable afternoon.
google avatar

Yelp
Epic wine and service. Thank you Jane for making our hearts sing with this epic sparkling.

Yelp
Cal-Ital wine in good ole Healdsburg. Jane Portalupi is mixing her Italian heritage and grapes with California concepts to make easy to drink and inexpensive wine. These grapes were brought from Italy and planted on California soil. We initially came here for a yelp event and joined the wine club. We ended up going back this past weekend and still learned quite a bit. If you're wondering about the random pinot noir...this was Jane's husband's idea! Haha. My two favorite wines here are the arneis and Nebbiolo. They are actually known for their Barbera (licorice) and I especially loved their reserve. The wine isn't expensive and I absolutely love supporting a small batch winery. You can even pick up some table wine made with a few different varietals. Great spot if you're out in Healdsburg and don't mind sitting on an actually vineyard.

Yelp
My fiancé and I just did a wine tasting here. We're not wine experts, but we go to a decent amount of wineries and tasting rooms. That being said, this was probably one of the best places we've been. We did the 6 tasting, so we tried all wines on the menu. We actually loved every wine we tasted - a first for us! The person who attended to us (sorry, we didn't get your name!) was also AMAZING. Super friendly and very knowledgable. What we loved about her was that she told us exactly what to pair each wine with. My fiancé and I both cook a lot, so this was a really helpful suggestion. We also didn't feel like she was overbearing or tried to oversell any products. She genuinely wanted to educate us and give us a good experience. While we didn't end up purchasing a wine club membership today, we did bring back 2 bottles and will tell our friends about this place!
google avatar

Jerome M.

Yelp
Very nice experience, staff was passionate about the wines and they were great! Definitely worth a stop.

Yelp
Husband and I went there for our first weekend trip away from our baby and we had such an amazing experience! It was full of incredible wine and such a fun time! The people who work there could not be more inviting. Will definitely be back there next time!

Yelp
Portalupi Winery's tasting room is a great place to try a variety of locally produced wines. During a recent trip to Healdsburg, we stopped into Portalupi at the suggestion of our hotel. It turned out to be a great experience. The woman that helped us couldn't have been nicer. All of the wines we tried were fantastic. They offer not only California varietals but also several Italian ones as well. I'm not sure about all of the little bags of Cheetos laying around and in baskets however. We didn't partake in eating any of that (mainly because their not vegan) and can't imagine it would assist in tasting their wines. Kind of strange. This would be a nice place to bring a large group of people. They have a few areas were a group could be accommodated with a fair amount of privacy. Overall, it's worth a trip.
google avatar

Wendi P.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our tasting here! Maria did a great job of educating & serving us. Cute (but a bit cold) and comfy interior. Wines are excellent- we went home with a fantastic Barbera as well as a really good Zin. Charcuterie board was well thought out and enhanced our tasting 100%. We are glad to have had the opportunity to experience Portalupi.
google avatar

Kimberly W.

Yelp
We love this wine and the people. Definitely get in for a tasting when you can! We became members on our first visit after the second wine. They definitely do it right...from the wine to the customer service you can't go wrong!
google avatar

Lynn R.

Yelp
Portalupi is the best! We fell in love years ago, the first time we tasted them. Through the years we've ordered online, gotten to visit again only once, but finally got to have an in person tasting again this past Monday. They did not disappoint! Not too many wineries in Sonoma have a Barbera, and they have 2! I can't say enough how smooth and delicious they are. And as yummy as the Barbera is, I think the Petite Sirah tops them. At the end of our tasting we couldn't decide on what to buy, because, did I also mention the Primitive, Charbono, or just the everyday drinking wine? So, we joined the wine club! I am excited to be able to continuously have some Portalupi wine in our house!

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem in downtown Healdsburg. A knowledgeable and kind group of proprietors and staff who are passionate about their "Cal-Ital" wines. As for the wine itself, superb!! Really interesting group of wines that showcasing Italian grape varietals not as popular in the CA wine scene. I LOVE their "Vaso di Marina"- Italian table wine (red, rose, and white) in the classic, old-school milk bottle. Awesome selection of cheese and meat boards to enjoy outdoors during these wild times. Stop by and you won't regret it! They truly will make your group/family happy.

Sophia B.

Yelp
Fun little tasting experience! Server was really nice and fixed a little mistake that was made from pouring us the wrong wine. Good wine

Yelp
Excellent local wines, wonderful and friendly Italian owners on site describing the wines journey. We bought a ton and they had it delivered to our hotel. We wish them continued success!

Yelp
The wines were delish! And our host was awesome. I can't wait to try the recipes we were given. Thank you for such a great day!

Yelp
Glad I came here after my friends and were offered a free tasting. The 2016 Barbera and 2016 Zinfandel are amazing! The staff is very friendly and the charcuterie board is semi customizable which was so so good! I would highly recommend stopping by to check it out

Yelp
What a fabulous and an unexpected wine venue! This place is small, but entering this wine spot, demands attention! It has a rustic industrial vibe to the walls and with a hidden back dining lounge. There's a long and comfy, purple couch in the front to enjoy the wine here as well. They sell their wines in their signature milk liter glass containers! It's adorable! The service was superb and attentive! She accommodated a large group of us at the hidden dining table in the back. We got to pick 3 wines from the menu, for the tasting and they give you generous pours! Vaso di Marina White Wine - had an aroma of jasmine and was very refreshing for a sunny outing! It sets the mood for the other pours to come! Pinot Noir Summit - a lingering aftertaste, that leaves you wanting for more! Their Double Gold Medal winner, Zinfandel Russian River Valley, brings on the finishing touch to any wine pours and takes home the prize, agreeably! Portalupi was a nice additional wine pit stop on the way back home from a day at the vineyards!

Yelp
Cool place. Came here in 2015 on my honeymoon and dragged my friends back for my 30th birthday celebration in wine country. One of my friends immediately joined the wine club because she loved the wines so much! I have to say I came home with a case of wine from this place because its so good. The wine maker and owners are always in the tasting room and have such an interesting little place. There's Cards Against Humanity and bingo in the back so you can play, order one of their fabulous cheese boards and enjoy a bottle of wine with friends while playing a game. Wines are reasonably priced as well- as is the wine club. If I lived closer, I'd join the wine club! They have their signature milk bottles filled with wine- and they offer 3 on tap- each for less than $30 and with refills averaging around $20 (YES, you can refill the empty bottles!). Try this place, you won't regret it.

Yelp
We ended up coming here courtesy of our Worldmark timeshare, what an awesome choice as the place was packed. Make sure you get reservations first then show up on time. All of the food and wine parings were awesome, service first to none. I strongly recommend this as a must stop here destination. Enjoy!

Yelp
Walked in with my friend and were greeted warmly. The wines were awesome and so was the charcuterie plate we added with our tasting! Staff was very wonderful and it was a great place to hang out for a glass of wine after. Really enjoyed my experience.
