15 Best Hotels in Portland, Maine

"The Portland Harbor Hotel has undergone a major update since opening in 2002, giving it a decidedly more modern personality and nautical vibes. In keeping with the theme in the public spaces, guest rooms have a seafaring thing going on. This is a hotel to book if you want to be in the center of everything in Portland. It's in tourist central in the Old Port, which means you're just down the street from the city's best restaurants and bars." - Joe Ricchio, Alexandra Hall

Portland Harbor Hotel

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? The Portland Harbor Hotel has undergone a major update since opening in 2002, giving it a decidedly more modern personality with nautical vibes. Tell us about the rooms. Any tips on what to book?In keeping with the rest of the hotel, rooms here have a seafaring thing going on. Some have views of the city or garden, and all have comfy beds and linens. Glass-enclosed showers have granite tile work and suites have whirlpool tubs with built-in sound systems. Each floor has a breakfast nook featuring a touch-screen Starbucks coffee machine. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?Wi-Fi is free. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?Blue Fin Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and provides the room service); dishes include classics like oysters Rockefeller as well as strong original creations like lobster pappardelle with sage cream sauce. If you're looking for something al fresco, there are few better places to relax and sip cocktails than the garden patio. And the service? Staff is professional and accommodating; the concierge is particularly knowledgeable. What else is in the neighborhood? You're in the heart of the Downtown Old Port, just down the street from some of the city's best restaurants and bars. Bottom line: Why are we choosing the Portland Harbor Hotel? It's one of the better high-end hotels in the Old Port and its character shines through in a way it doesn't always at bigger chains." - Joe Ricchio

Portland Harbor Hotel (Portland, Maine) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Old Port district is the most picturesque corner of downtown Portland, its cobblestone streets lined with classic red-brick warehouses. Portland Harbor Hotel stands at one end of the Fore Street strip, and its rooms lean in to the hotel’s nautical inspiration, but tastefully so, lending character, not kitsch, to its contemporary-classic interiors. Many bathrooms include large soaking tubs, and some suites come with whirlpool baths, and some with fireplaces. BlueFin, the restaurant, serves a straightforward selection of fresh North Atlantic seafood, and more casual options abound, starting just a few yards from the hotel’s front door." - Tablet Hotels

I had such a wonderful stay at the Portland Harbour Hotel! From the moment we checked in, the staff made us feel welcome and taken care of. The location is unbeatable—right in the heart of Portland, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and the waterfront. The rooms were spotless, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed, with little touches that made it feel special. The restaurant and bar on-site were excellent as well—delicious food and a great atmosphere to wind down in the evening. What stood out the most was the level of service—friendly, attentive, and genuine. Every interaction felt like they truly cared about making my stay perfect. I would absolutely stay here again and recommend the Portland Harbour Hotel to anyone visiting the area!

Such a fun city to visit with friends or romantically! I own a luxury travel agency and this was my favorite hotel. The service is exceptional especially Roman! I loved the quiet rooms with baths perfectly located in center of harbor & they have a beautiful garden with fire pits & a cozy restaurant. Water & pastries on every floor all day. Easy self or valet parking.

Beautiful hotel with great staff! The hotel location was perfect, walking to everything we wanted to see in that part of Portland! The design was elegant, the outdoor courtyard was beautiful! Rooms and beds were comfortable as well. We loved the little pantry with complementary items. The valet car service crew were amazing! They do charge a 35 dollar a day “resort” feee so I would inquire about that ahead of time.

Excellent hotel location. Bring earplugs to sleep. The nightlife in Portland is vibrant and you can hear the music. Great service at bistro, stuffies to purchase for the kiddos. Courtyard is comfortable. Valet parking is very convenient

This was an excellent find in an up and coming small city. The room we stayed in was excellent. Clean, well furnished, with lots of little amenities like a coffee bar with small pastries and fruits. It had a lovely garden area where my wife and I enjoyed a well prepared breakfast. The staff was very helpful. We will return for a longer stay.

Love this boutique hotel in the heart of Portland. Walk to just about everything! Outdoor patio with fire table , nice little restaurant and bar. Beautiful rooms, on smaller side but nice. Comfortable bedding and very clean. Great spot!!!

Watch out for the hidden $35/night fee. If you book thru Expedia or some other site, they say "it's not their fault that those companies didn't mention this." Rooms are built more for aesthetic than function. Shower is too small. All the faucets had wobbly knobs. There is no real desk. The closet hanger is built as front to back rather than side to side (like you see in a retail store rather than your closet). Location is great but for the price you can find other hotels with exactly the same benefit. Only good thing is they supply you with water and snacks in the pantry on every floor.
