The Portland Jetport is my favorite airport in the world.
I love that it's so easy to navigate (because it's so small; there are currently eleven gates. After TSA, you go down an escalator and essentially have five gates to your right, five gates to your left, and one gate in front of you).
I love that there are barely any queues (I usually arrive just a half hour before the plane starts boarding because it doesn't take very long to get through security [especially if you've checked-in and have your ticket available on your app]).
I love that even the security guards are so friendly here.
I love that it feels unpretentious, unhurried, homey, warm, and inviting.
I've been to some of the biggest, smallest, and most unique airports in the world; but none of them are like PWM. The vibe here is, for me anyway, like putting on a comfortable hoodie after a night in a little black dress and four inch heels. No, I don't wanna take a bus to the next terminal; no, I don't want to be confused by signs that say "C1 to C19, minus C-17 this way; C20 to C32, plus C-17 this way"; no, I don't want to spend another twenty or thirty minutes getting out of an airport once I've landed - I just want to be wherever it is that I'm going.
PWM is my home.
Do I care that there aren't enough boutiques or restaurants? No. PWM has exactly what this world traveler needs: excellent customer service, free Wifi, clean bathrooms, coffee, rocking chairs and enormous sofas ("Welcome to Maine. It's comfortable. The way life should be."), puzzle tables for when your flight gets delayed, and it's incredibly convenient.
Not to mention the view! Have you ever flown into Portland during the day time? More often than not, pilots sweep over the coast, the bays, the beaches, the islands... it's the most perfect introduction, or welcome home, there is.
