These Are the Best Airports in North America, According to a New Passenger Survey
View Postcard for Portland International Jetport

Google
A small airport with easy access. TSA was easy and pleasant. I arrived 2 hours early and proceeded to the gate expecting to charge my phone for the flight and relax a bit. Every USB charging port in the gate seating are and at the tables either was not plugged in or did not work and near gate 3 only 1 receptacle worked to plug in my computer to charge the phone. Disappointed, I sat in the seating only to have the bench row of seats collapse beneath me. I think Bangor may be a more welcoming airport. Please show your guests a little respect and put some substance behind the flash.

Google
Lovely airport- parking is a breeze, easily marked and plenty of it- very small, easy to maneuver, not a lot of crazy traffic and lanes to cross, plenty of space inside to sit and walk, restrooms easily accessible; unique artwork displayed en route to baggage claim and just a nice overall experience, will keep the Jetport in mind for future travel.

Google
Very small and clean airport. The TSA line moves nicely. Limited but great food selections. *PSA* if you are staying in Old Port/Downtown Portland, the Metro will get you there for $2.00. The stop is to the left when you exit baggage and is a straight drive. Very easy to use and helpful drivers.

Josh Bath

Google
Trashiest and worst airport I’ve been to. Flew in at 11:55pm and then the half-ass ground crew tell our pilot 15-20 minutes to park us due to “short staffing”. Which is crazy to me because they always have people standing around doing nothing, a good friend of mine used to work here as ground crew. I’ve seen the things they do and it’s unprofessional and disgusting. Save yourself the time and hassle and make the drive to Logan for a better experience.

Gayle Hathaway

Google
Easy access, great airport to fly into or out of, drop off and pick up are a breeze, they have a free parking area located across from baggage claim, but you must stay with your vehicle to park there. They could mark the exit better in the upper floors of the parking garage. Downside, restaurant doesn't stay open very late if you need to get a brew while waiting to pick up your buds.

Susan MacDowell

Google
Drop off to gate took less than 10 minutes. Great little airport.

James Anderson, CFRE

Google
It’s a smaller but convenient regional airport. Security was efficient and rational. I think we got through in about 5 minutes even though my mother was in a wheel chair and using a personal oxygen concentrator. Food choices are very limited so I’d eat before I go to this airport. There is no airline club so don’t arrive more than an hour before your flight. My only complaint is that many/most of the customer assistance representatives speak very little English. I think it’s irresponsible to have front line customer service people who don’t speak the primary language of the customers. Multiple times various people assigned to help us misunderstood and pretended otherwise before I thanked them and dismissed them because they were wasting our time. P.S. I took my 77 yr Mother to Maine for an epic adventure of eating as much lobster as possible for a week.

Google
Small airport. Car rental facility is just across from the terminal. Very easy to navigate. One downside in the terminal is very few desk or high tops with chargers for those wanting to work on a laptop while waiting.

Yelp
Is this an international airport? To Canada, maybe. Either way, it's an adorable little place to fly into when you're headed to Maine. I love that there's decently fast wifi (probably because there were like three other people using it), the bathrooms were clean, the lines were nonexistent, the chairs were pretty comfortable, and basically everyone I encountered was super friendly. It's easy to navigate because there's only a few gates, and with security being lightning fast, I really didn't spend much time here, which is ideal in an airport. I would gladly fly through here again. Also, there's a moose that greets you upon arrival, and that feels pretty Maine to me.

Larissa G.

Yelp
In a word: small. This airport is very small. In some ways that's a good thing. When I arrived for my return flight home I flew through security (pun intended). But after breezily walking through said security there was really nothing to do in the airport itself. And I had a LOT of time to pass since the I spent less than 10 minutes dealing with the TSA. The nice thing about larger airports is that you can walk around and window shop in the stores, as well as find something decent to eat. No such luck here. There was one souvenir shop that I walked into for the heck of it; and the only place to buy a hot beverage (which I really wanted while visiting Maine in March) was a Starbucks. So I just drank my water, wished the airport had a local coffee maker I could have supported instead, and listened to a book on my phone. Despite the lack of stores in the airport itself they do have something else that's important: car rentals. Since I flew in for a weekend in Kennebunkport I needed transportation, and I appreciated being able to easily walk from the airport to the rental terminal. Not sure if/when I'll be here again in the future, but it's nice to know it's not a nightmare airport to deal with. I'll make sure I have something good to listen to again, though!

Clarissa K.

Yelp
8-30-24/9-2-24 Flew in and out of here for a weekend visit to my in laws. We came here years ago but it has really been built up since our last visit. We flew in and out on Southwest. At our gate there was a Starbucks as well as a gift shop that sold local items. Definitely a great experience due to the size is so small you do not have to walk very far to get where you are going. For that reason alone they are deserving of five stars!

Harry R.

Yelp
Great Overall Experience. It is easy to navigate this airport. I have flown several airlines out of this airport. These include Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines.

Ashleigh D.

Yelp
This is a moderately small airport. It's not the smallest I've been in. The airline counters and TSA run efficiently. There are places to sit in the terminal. The hotels around the area have shuttles which is nice. It's also easy to drive here from the surrounding area. All in all, a nice airport. I recommend if you are flying into the area.

John D.

Yelp
Primary Air PWM is Maine's largest airport that served over 2.2 million passengers last year, which puts it squarely somewhere in the mid-60s on the airport busyness factor for the US. The Good: *Wifi worked really well; I forgot to test it, but no complaints on our end. *It's just a quick walk across the street to get your rental car *Pet relief station *They actually have USB ports and 12V plugs at the seats, unlike some bigger airports who shall remain nameless. *cough cough BWI cough cough* *A few nice pieces of art around the airport The Meh: *Not a huge selection of stores and food options, but they should have what you need. *One of the smallest airports with only fourteen gates, but it still gets plenty busy despite its small size. *Security lines can be surprisingly long--even with TSA precheck™--but they're still manageable and move quickly. The Ugly: *Despite the plugs at the chairs, some of the chairs aren't plugged in?! Guess they didn't really think it thru? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ *Trying to catch a flight from the West Coast to Portland (and vice-versa) is quite the all-day Odyssey and required at least two plane changes--at least with Southworst, it does. Not their fault but just feel like bitching. Conclusion: Quaint little airport with a big heart.

Bridgette G.

Yelp
I liked this airport. It's smaller and less crowded and or less chaotic than most other airports. Even though there was fewer staff to help ~~ thing's went pretty smoothly here. Just make sure you still give yourself enough check in time. You know just in case self kiosks are down & and there is only one person checking in bags etc. Definitely want to come back to Portland ME!

Tim K.

Yelp
Love these small to medium airports. Easy to get to and love when the rental cars and baggage claim are so easy. What is really excellent about Portland, ME is that they are open so early with almost all the restaurants and stores open at 5 AM. Even the largest airports don't have most things open this early. Very much appreciated. Airport facilities are clean and the whole location is a nice experience

Shannon G.

Yelp
Flying out of Portland to Austin. TSA searched my back pack that had beach sand in it. Just beach sand with a couple shells and small piece of drift wood. Everything checked out okay. Nothing to be alarmed about. I went to my gate, where I was an hour early. I saw a large table with a 1,000 piece Maine state puzzle. So I figured I had time. I put on some music and tackled this 1,000 piece puzzle. I was just sitting there doing my own thing. When it got closer to my boarding, I got a cheeseburger at Burger King. Boarding was quick and easy. Finding my gate was easy. Portland is just a nice size airport that you don't have to run a mile to catch your next flight. I love flying in and out of Portland Jetport, Maine!

Steff D.

Yelp
The Portland Jetport is my favorite airport in the world. I love that it's so easy to navigate (because it's so small; there are currently eleven gates. After TSA, you go down an escalator and essentially have five gates to your right, five gates to your left, and one gate in front of you). I love that there are barely any queues (I usually arrive just a half hour before the plane starts boarding because it doesn't take very long to get through security [especially if you've checked-in and have your ticket available on your app]). I love that even the security guards are so friendly here. I love that it feels unpretentious, unhurried, homey, warm, and inviting. I've been to some of the biggest, smallest, and most unique airports in the world; but none of them are like PWM. The vibe here is, for me anyway, like putting on a comfortable hoodie after a night in a little black dress and four inch heels. No, I don't wanna take a bus to the next terminal; no, I don't want to be confused by signs that say "C1 to C19, minus C-17 this way; C20 to C32, plus C-17 this way"; no, I don't want to spend another twenty or thirty minutes getting out of an airport once I've landed - I just want to be wherever it is that I'm going. PWM is my home. Do I care that there aren't enough boutiques or restaurants? No. PWM has exactly what this world traveler needs: excellent customer service, free Wifi, clean bathrooms, coffee, rocking chairs and enormous sofas ("Welcome to Maine. It's comfortable. The way life should be."), puzzle tables for when your flight gets delayed, and it's incredibly convenient. Not to mention the view! Have you ever flown into Portland during the day time? More often than not, pilots sweep over the coast, the bays, the beaches, the islands... it's the most perfect introduction, or welcome home, there is.

Kiamiah S.

Yelp
This airport is not huge at all. It's small but mighty. Not many food choices due to it being small. They do have Starbucks and the convenience store an about 2/3 restaurants . What I did think was cute was near their restrooms they have a little dog area where the dogs can use the bathroom. With the fake grass and what not.

Nate R.

Yelp
The best airport in New England and maybe in the US. Security, ticketing, and getting to my gate took less than 10 minutes. Friendly service all over the place from TSA agents to gate agents to Jetport employees. They have so many options now with direct flights to Dallas, Denver, Tampa, Orlando, etc. very comparable price to Boston. When someone from Maine/NH is choosing between Boston and Portland it should be an easy choice. For a smaller but growing airport, they continue to impress. Only concern I had is that it was busy and the market may be outgrowing this smaller terminal.

Beth E.

Yelp
First time here and found it to be an ok experience. Super small airport. We flew Breeze and they have a limited staff, so we waited a long time for luggage.

John E.

Yelp
You can find the Portland International Jetport at 1001 Westbrook St, Portland, ME 04102 - this seems to be one of the main access points to Maine via commercial plane. We rented a car here so I'm not sure what the parking situation is like. The airport is relatively clean and seems to be well maintained - there are large freestanding sculptures withing some of the longer hallways - including a bear sculpture by local artist Bernard Langlais. The airport is on the smaller side so not a lot of walking - no tram or moving sidewalks. The upstairs where ticketing lives has a neat wooden ceiling. Lines were fairly slow but manageable - since we both flew in and later out, the experience leaving was better than arriving as luggage took about 30 minutes post-arrival to the baggage carousel. Allow yourself a lot of time getting a rental - we spent almost an hour there with a reservation - long, slow moving line. Otherwise, the airport is neither the worst I've experience or the best.

Heidi A.

Yelp
I love this airport! It's small People are friendly. It's fast to get through security. And Portland is worth visiting. What are your waiting for?

Amy Lauren S.

Yelp
My husband and I had a really great experience flying in and out of PWM on a recent vacation in Maine. We flew Breeze Airways, which now offers direct flights from Charleston, SC. The Portland Airport is pretty small, with only one terminal, but they have a few shops, dining areas (including a bar with local brews) and Starbucks. We did not try any food, but the bar was closed when we arrived on a Friday morning but open when we flew out on Memorial Day. Since you're unlikely to have a layover in this airport, the options are good enough. The restrooms were clean, and there's even a restroom area for dogs to relieve themselves. For a small town, Portland's airport has a lot of character- likely because it services much of the state. I loved the employee art gallery, which is beyond the TSA checkpoint, and spent some time looking at the photographs and a few paintings and drawings and voting for my favorite Maine-themed art. Local products are also on display in the terminal. The staff members we encountered were all incredibly nice, even the TSA guards who are typically no-nonsense in most other airports. Often in airports, the staff seem miserable, but even the workers making the passenger announcements sounded happy here. The checked bags were unloaded and came off the carousel super quickly, so it was an easy in and out. Maine is a long drive from well... most places in America. I'm glad we chose to fly and flew into and out of this airport. I'd happily come back!

Michael H.

Yelp
Small quiet airport. Perfect location for all your south Maine needs (even northern needs if you prefer a drive over a short plane ride).

Jim A.

Yelp

Mandmgriffin G.

Yelp
This is the dumbest airport in the world. It will take you 45 mins to an hour to get check bags minimum. Then there is no telling which carousel you bag will come out on there are possibly 200 people waiting between 3 carousels because nothing tells you which one you should be at until the bags come out. Most unorganized place I have ever been to, and I've been to plenty of airports.

Joe M.

Yelp
Very nice airport. Easy in and out. A few place to eat and drink. Lots of shops if you need to pick up a gift

Cindy Y.

Yelp
For a smaller airport the Portland Jetport has a lot of amenities you expect from larger airports, but also some pleasant surprises. Little birds flit about inside the terminal snacking on crumbs, a puzzle is laid out on a table for anyone to help solve, there are tips on things to do locally on the chalkboard at Starbucks (who knew there was goat yoga at Smiling Hill Farms?) and of course LL Bean and outdoor scenes are everywhere. There are massage chairs, a comfy seating area with overstuffed leather chairs, a few restaurants and gift shops to choose from, a currency exchange booth, a lactation room and a few art pieces. Parking has been a challenge as of late, and there is no longer the park and fly lower cost option there was pre-Covid. We recently paid $140 for 10 days of parking. Kinda defeated the cheap tickets to Puerto Rico, but the airlines changes the time of our flight so we're no longer able to get dropped off and picked up and live too far for a taxi.

Erin M.

Yelp
Small airport with a few food options. They have a Starbucks so that's what matters (to me :)) The seats to me are a little outdated. I really wish they had more options to charge your phone/devices. It looks like even though this airport is small they have heavy traffic so looking forward to any future upgrades to come.

Shannah H.

Yelp
Slightly outdated, resulting in crowded gates and especially crowded bathrooms. But otherwise well signed and easy to navigate.

Danny N.

Yelp
This is a very nice airport! It is so calm and serene here compared to other airports I've been to. Make sure you check out the moose on the way out! You can't miss it!

Sherwin C.

Yelp
An alright airport. Some of the advantages are that pick up and drop off are relatively easy as you don't really have a big mass of cars even in the afternoon. That also means that security screening doesn't take too long and lines at restaurants aren't enormous either. The drawback of this then is how crowded seating can get if there are delays, and the limited number of options for things to do or places to eat. The restaurant hours aren't very long and there's only a handful of dining options in addition to souvenier shops that sell snacks and self-service vending machines.

Danielle V.

Yelp
As airports go this one is average. It's super small with not many gates. I fly out of here frequently and the airport itself is fine, it has a couple restaurants and a couple breakfast spots. It does have a Starbucks which is a plus. Everyone is friendly and you typically get through security pretty fast. I have had a few delays trying to leave but nothing to do with the airports fault. Overall I enjoy flying out of here.

Anonymous G.

Yelp
Easiest airport in the country for its size. Friendly staff that go out of their way to help with anything. A lot of flights compared to a few years ago. Would say this has been my favorite airport on the east coach as I fly back and fourth for work frequently from Denver. Clean facilities, they may be outgrowing their space here pretty soon since it's always busy in the terminals. But no complaints at all, love Portland and awesome airport.

Gregory H.

Yelp
Hats off to the folks who work here, from the TSA crew to the operations management. I had lost a recently purchased item while going through security and realized it when we finished lunch. I went back to the security area and inquired about it. The TSA guy located my item but it was back in the main airport at the operations manager's office (Lost and found). That meant I'd have to go back through security again. No problem, I still had an hour before my flight boarded. I received adequate direction to find the necessary office, retrieved my item and skated swiftly back through security. I made sure to thank the TSA guy who helped me out - these guys are likely to not be shown much appreciation and I wanted the guy to know he had been very helpful.

Thomas S.

Yelp
Non chaotic small city airport with car rental set up within walking distance from the luggage pick up area, a 5 minutes walk. It was not crowded within the airport and bathrooms. It was a breeze going through security. Drinking and eating options were limited.

Sarah D.

Yelp
Smooth check in. TSA was quick and nice employees. Free wifi with computer sitting space and accessible outlets for charging gadgets, which I find to be super helpful! All food options are accessible within the departures area. I didn't try any of the restaurants, but I went into all the stores and checked out all the kiosks... food options are all the same brands, Starbucks/Pepsi = boring and unhealthy. It would be great to have better/healthier food options.

Matthew S.

Yelp
Small, clean airport just outside downtown Portland. It is incredibly easy to navigate, and the employees who work here are really nice. But it seems nobody works here! When my flight landed here, we had to wait 20 before a crew could take us into the gate. Once in the terminal area I had to wait roughly 20-30 minutes to get my luggage. It felt like an eternity. My flights were timely, but when you have a 50 minute flight, there is not much to complain about. Getting a rental car here was a breeze. They make it real easy. Not a lot of food options. Bring snacks. I have been through better smaller airports than this one.

Melissa T.

Yelp
This airport is so far one of the smallest airports I've been. When we were leaving Maine we again flew out from this airport and they only have four food vendors and only one was open. Seating options at the terminal are also limited.

Carrie H.

Yelp
Ok the airport is empty. It's awesome but a bit disappointed with their cleanliness brings it down 2 stars. Bathrooms messy at 9:30 am on a Friday, most power outlets in the United area not working. I had to try about 15 before I found one that worked. Tables dirty! Yuck. No sanitary measures in this place!

Bruce K.

Yelp
Portland has all the things I like about regional airports - easy navigation, good signage, lots of seating, free wifi and the rental car area is attached to the airport. My arrival was on time and I had a half hour wait for my brother's flight. I spent it on their wifi and catching up on some Yelp reviews. From there, we walked across to pick up our rental car. Easy and under cover for a short walk. Returning the car was simple with decent directions to let us know where to go and the same short walk back to the terminal. I checked my bag, cleared security and had a short wait that we spent getting a late lunch in the concourse restaurant. Only one minor problem was a security issue that took the airport about two hours to clear up. An unattended package needed to be investigated and that caused some significant delays for us and others. Hey, erroring on the side of caution is a good thing right? [Review 14846 overall, 348 of 2021, number 32 in Maine.]

Ryan D.

Yelp
This is an average airport. It is one of the smallest airports that I've ever been to. There are fourteen gates and two bathrooms on the one and only concourse. Bathrooms are also available at the ticket area and before security as well as when picking up checked luggage. I did not see that there was an area to check baggage outside. There are a couple of local restaurants featuring locally brewed beers. There is also the obligatory Starbucks and Burger King. The airport also features two gift shops. If you happen to be stranded there because of a two and a half hour ground stop delay, there is plenty of seating between gates five and six. The seats there have plugs to recharge your phone or power up your laptop. I would normally say to check it, but it's your only option in Portland. Enjoy!

Ed M.

Yelp
Extremely Rude and Disrespectful at American Airlines flight to DCA. Flight 5121 and two gate attendants who were not helpful and were rude. One was too busy with her personal phone to deal with passengers.

Drew O.

Yelp
This airport is super small; 14 total gates. Not many food options; an over priced seafood joint and a Burger King. Lots of weather delays; airlines can't control but annoying nonetheless. I am a fan.

Eric B.

Yelp
A nice alternative to Bangor International Airport. It's smaller, as expected, with very easy access to gates, passing through security and boarding. Fewer restaurants than expected and choices are limited, but still options for everyone.

Mareena P.

Yelp
First off, the TSA line was longer than the regular security line. No lounges at this airport so everyone's waiting to get into the two restaurants the airport has. We waited 15 minutes at Shipyard to be seated before one of the employees told us the sinks are flooding and they might have to close down- meanwhile they are still serving customers food and drinks. The next restaurant was so short staffed that it took forever to get a drink. Wouldn't recommend this airport at all

Ray M.

Yelp
Delta Portland Maine is probably the worst run in the US. Delta needs to hire employees who arrive on time or supervisors who can insure that they do. They advise to arrive two hour before departure, however nobody is there. You wait and wait until you are almost at boarding to see anyone. Not good

Nunya B.

Yelp
Per usual PWM is a joke. Slow, unorganized, plain stupid. Just had to let myself out of the gate because the agent was playing with her phone. We were literally the only plane on the mat, waited a half hour to get off.

Clif M.

Yelp
Small but a good airport, if you a a connecting flight you don't have to run to catch the next one. All the gates are right there in a row. There is a Starbucks, a beer joint with food, Linda beans restaurant which I thought was expensive on the food and a Burger King. There a gift shops with snack and yes they are expensive bag of chips for 4.00. Last but not least there are vending machines

Bob A.

Yelp
A clean, well maintained regional airport that is also environmentally friendly (i.e., LEED building).people are nice and friendly. It is truly easy in and easy out. There's not a lot in the way of amenities, but there is enough to get by. Here for an early morning flight, there's not much in the way of people or services beyond TSA and the agents at the desk. They're set up for a lot more people so I'm guessing it does get busy.

Marie S.

Yelp
Was a cute little place. Easy to navigate and find baggage, rentals, etc. It had its little touches of Maine from the lobstah rolls to the moose in the lobby. It was close by other hotels and shops. 2021 #90

Keith A.

Yelp
Very nice and efficient airport. I really have no idea what a jetport is... gimmicky if you ask me. This airport is very clean. PS bring bird food because there are plenty of trapped birds in the gates. My one ding is that it's 8 in the morning on a Sunday and not any of the restaurants, including Starbucks is open. There are also no store hours signs. Now just spending a few days in this state and it seems about as atheistic as Oregon with all the liberal hippy crazy here... yet they still want to close things on a Sunday morning like the whole city of Portland is in church... I guess selective privilege is in order.

Jason B.

Yelp
Pretty nice port and for sure stunning to fly into as well. The place as pretty busy and it did seem that some of the eating places were open. I didn't see any trash laying around so kudos to the staff for keeping it looking good. My only issue here was the parking areas are pretty small and catching a cab or Uber seemed harder than it should've been

Alexander B.

Yelp
This is a relatively small airport but well organized. The rental car facility is right around the corner and easily accessible. The TSA staff was friendly and efficient and the airport was overall clean and laid back. Great experience.

Courtney K.

Yelp
Bottom Line: Small but nice airport. I recently made my first passage through the Portland International Jetport and I thought it was nice airport especially for being so small. A lot of times small airports don't have much in the way of character or restaurants but PWM delivered. The taxidermied moose and lighthouse prints made my husband I feel like we arrived in Maine and not in genericsville. And when we were flying out, we loved sitting on the big comfy couches at Starbucks. We rented a car and it was nice that car rentals were just a short walk away. In fact, everything was just a short walk away. When leaving Maine we checked a bag and that was easy too. Security was also easy especially via TSA PreCheck. Word of caution - this airport can get socked in with fog leading to delays and cancellations. PWM has two runways and their longer runway is currently being resurfaced. When its foggy they can't land planes on the shorter runway so that can lead to delays or cancellations. We were certainly bummed when our Friday night was cancelled delaying our vacation by a day.

Charles W.

Yelp
What's not to love about this little airport that could. Everything is close by including Portland. (But ideally a better public transportation would be ideal). Parking is super close (but as the time of writing 14 dollars a day is steep) and don't believe the parking garage open sign. That is notoriously inaccurate. But the check in process is super easy, security super easy(better with tsa precheck). After that it's just an easy find your gate. It's either 15-20 gates total. Great place to kick off your trip and even better when coming back.
