When you're living the car-free lifestyle (alas, not care-free) and live in central Halifax, it's a bit of an effort to make your way over to Dartmouth to try out the latest and greatest spots. However, with my generous work schedule, I was able to make my way across the harbour, via ferry of course, to try out one of downtown Dartmouth's entrepreneurial pioneers - Portland Street Creperie.
Arriving slightly after the lunch rush, there were just a couple tables occupied in their relatively small space, with seating that tops out around 15. The design is pretty simple, with an open crepe-prep area behind a counter made of re-purposed wood, and other touches that give it a clean, modern feel that isn't overdone.
Their menu consists of a few sweet, and a few savoury crepes that are posted on the wall, and frequently change. While their donair crepe was very tempting, I wanted to keep things relatively simple, so I got their honeycomb crepe. Coming with waffle bits and local honey wrapped up in a pliable crepe, it was a carb-wrapped-in-carb Siren song that couldn't be resisted.
After a couple other crepes were cranked out, mine was soon ready for pick up at the counter. Lightly dusted with icing sugar and with just a hint of browning in spots, it was a tasty looking plate. The crepe itself was just the right level of pliable and not too sweet despite what was in/on it. The waffle bits were a cute idea, but were a tad on the dry side. They were however great for soaking up the honey that added a subtle flavour to the blank canvasses of the crepe and waffle bits.
While I'm more for the airiness of a good pancake or full-on waffle, I appreciate what you can do with crepes and what PSC is doing with them and for the neighbourhood.
