Best Brunches in New York, from Bistros to Dim Sum | Condé Nast Traveler

"This nautical-themed Italian restaurant in the Bronx remains mostly off the beaten tourist path, so you'll be sharing space with low-key locals and the occasional group who have made the 15-minute walk from Yankee Stadium. At brunch, your options range from creative omelettes studded with Italy-inspired ingredients (the prosciutto and mozzarella one is savory and satisfying) to hearty homemade pastas and excellent paninis. If you're in the mood for something sweet, go for the pancakes, which come in traditional and chocolate varieties, both topped with fresh whipped cream and seasonal fruit." - Andrea Whittle

The food was good, I had a zucchini chip appetizer and the branzino and veggie special they had for the day. The drinks were no good. I had a mango mojito, could have went without it honestly. My friend had a coconut mojito and it tasted like milk and soda. The waiters were attentive, but it made us feel rushed. We expressed that we wanted to eat before drinking and our waiter came to the table three times before the appetizers came out asking if we were ready to order drinks. And then another time after the appetizers arrived. We finally ordered drinks when the main course arrived and were extremely underwhelmed by the drinks. Another waiter came to our table and began to remove our plates once we received our drinks and we had to stop her because we weren’t even half way done with our meal. The ambience of the restaurant is very cute and intimate. I would have returned for a date, but I was just so thrown off by how fast they were trying to get us out of there. There were three tables in the dining room, including us so we weren’t sure what the urgency was about.

Went here for lunch on a Weds. no wait for a table it was pretty empty. The oysters were good that was the tastiest thing we had. The Ceaser salad was good as well. The octopus was good but it was a very small portion for the price. Only one piece. The crab cake wasn’t tasty and was overpriced and the salmon tartar wasn’t the best either. It needed like plantain chips or pita or something to go with it.

Five years later, and there still great!!! Took my ladies for brunch and, as always, great!!! Food, service and atmosphere!!! The manager tonight deserves a rise!!! Amazing service!!! The desserts were perfect portions and temptress. We had italian pentacota with the raspberry and their Carmel ice cream!! Absolutely recommend!!!

I've known this place for a long time. I don't go often, but I liked stopping by every now and then, though I definitely don't think I'll go back I wanted to stop by on a Wednesday and enjoy the evening but the service was very slow I had to ask for my water pitcher several times, and in the end they brought me a dirty one that I think had mold on it. I don't know how to explain it The waitress had a very bad temper I didn't like her attitude at all I felt rushed the waitresses were passing by every 10 minutes and asking me questions I didn't feel comfortable as I had only come to enjoy the place and the atmosphere made me think they wanted to move me from my seat or something when I ordered my food, I asked what they recommended, and I didn't like the rude response "There's the menu, you should read it" the lights were almost off so I couldn't read it properly. The food was always very appetizing, but the service left a lot to be desired. I didn't say anything to the waitress, as her attitude only disappointed me maybe they were busy, but I didn't deserve that treatment

I stopped here with a buddy to get food around 1pm. The menu was for brunch but we wanted something more hardy. The manager I believe, if not owner, gave us the dinner menu very eager to keep us to stay and make sure we were happy. The food was amazing. Grilled shrimp and octopus over a bed of amazing hummus. The bread served with ricotta whipped crème and olive oil. That spread alone was amazing. The short rib plate was insane, melting off bone and the pasta unbelievable. Had a skirt steak as well and the potatoes served in small portions were crisp and flavored with garlic. We definitely over ate and had to pack to-go. We ended with the strongest coffee I ever had, and yes it was good too. Honestly we expected to pay more than the bill was so we tipped them good. I’m now re heating the left overs. Highly recommend if you love your tastebuds. Great environment. Very caring staff. You will thank him and then me. Your welcome.

Excellent gem in the neighborhood. I stopped by one day on my way home from work, had a delicious meal in really comfortable, stylish, and relaxing surroundings. I immediately came back the next day with my husband. The food is excellent. I've been about 5 or 6 times by now and haven't had anything less than superb. The prices for portions and quality are a great deal. In addition, the service is impeccable. Friendly and professional. Highly recommend this place for a pleasant evening meal and drinks in the Bronx at the end of a long day. Hoping to try their brunch this weekend!

Yelp
Everything about this place was 5 star service and quality. The appetizer was simple yet delicious consisting of olive oil with a ricotta/sundries tomato dip paired with a rustic thick, chewy bread. It was so good we asked for another. The place itself was very clean, nice looking, but baby, the devil was in the details! Upon closer inspection it was actually more then nice. Textures, color schemes, floral arrangements, the raised ceiling panels all contributed to a very beautiful ambiance. We ordered the rose sangria which was amazingly soft and sweet. Hints of Apple and Rose paired quite well. Service was pleasant and fast. Everything was on point. I ordered a lamb pappardelle pasta and they did not skimp on the lamb nor the portion itself. Fresh pasta will forever beat any box or bag. Improves the quality immensely. All their pasta was fresh, but, where it truly shined was in the butternut ravioli. On an olive oil sage base, fresh thick slightly sweet ravioli, butternut squash filling and drizzled with a bit of parmesan. I was so shocked that I actually loved this because I'm not a squash fan by any means. Dessert we opted for the caramel custard which was very close to a Spanish flan but thicker in consistency. Very delicious and served with fresh whipped cream, very balanced sweetness. I was impressed by this little spot. My sister insisted that we go here for lunch and I must say, I was not disappointed! 10 out of 10 would highly recommend!

Yelp
I went into this place after a very long and hard day at work. I walked in and was instantly transported to a cute restaurant that well air conditioned, offered seating by the bar, inside or outside. I had to cool down and the waiter was very sweet, he gave me iced water, napkins and told me to take my time. I appreciated that. Once I was ready I asked for my drinks and the salad. Once it came out I had no idea that it would taste so fresh and delicious. This was just a beautiful plate. I would 100% come back for more wine and entree options. Thank you for the great service

Yelp
I walked in around 8 PM yesterday night for a wedding reception custom designed for about 20 people. It was dimly lit inside, pretty romantic, and had a classy feel to it. Taking a look around the restaurant, I noticed that they have white tablecloths and lit candles. It was a beautiful ambience! After walking inside, I immediately saw my friend, the bride, and I was able to take several photographs! I was quickly given a glass of champagne and also a menu for drinks. There were options for red, white, rose wine and also so many great cocktails. I had the strawberry margarita, and it was so delicious! I did have my eye on the mojitos as well. How was the food you wonder? I did enjoy my meal. We had complimentary bread with ricotta and roasted pepper spread (what? whoa! Yum!) One of my friends didn't drink, so they also had a variety of sodas for her. For my small plate, I had the Sweet Petite oysters and the Wellpoint oysters (they let you do half one and half another type...so cool!) For my main, I ordered the salmon dish, and the inside was so fresh and tender. I also took photographs of the other wedding guests so you can have a look at the meal portions and the quality. I sensed that the bartenders and servers took good care of us! Plus, there was a really great music playlist with Latin hits and fun top 40 playlists for shaking your hips to...like Elvis Crespo, Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Beyonce, Sean Paul, Shakira, etc. I absolutely remember the service was impeccable here. Always checking up on us and making sure if we needed anything. I would recommend visiting if you are in the Bronx!

Yelp
Brunched here with a friend and enjoyed the coffee and laid back feel. It was so pleasant outside and we did outdoor dining. It felt secluded and allowed us to have uninterrupted conversation. The brunch menu was sufficient!

Yelp
I came here for brunch with my parents and sister. Service was pretty quick. My parents both ordered Fettuccine Bolognese which has pasta with peasant veal ragout. I ordered Linguine al Pesto which is Flat pasta in pesto Ligurian style. My sister ordered the Pollo Grigliato which is Grilled chicken, tomato, avocado, spicy mayo. My parents and sister loved their food. I loved the basil and pecorino cheese in my pasta. I tried both their red and white sangria and preferred the red one. We enjoyed the nautical decor of the place. We at first missed the place because there is an Asian sign on the window and not the name of the place. If you're in the yankee stadium area there is a bus you can take that stops here.

Yelp
We stopped here for breakfast. It is a tiny little restaurant with a limited menu. I got a grilled chicken panini. It came with salad and home fries. Everything was absolutely delicious. I would definitely order this again. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are nearby.

Yelp
I was there last week. The food is great. The staff, service and the ambience too. But the music gets louder and louder as the evening goes on. I don't get it. It's not a nite club. A really nice meal with friends I hadn't seen in a while, and whom I wanted to talk to, was spoiled. It's a really nice place that almost gets everything right. They should fix it.

James B.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! The small but comfortable pasta heaven is very comfy and welcoming! We were greeted with a smile and seated right away. We asked what the waiters favorite was and he quickly recommended the Cavatelli Salsiccia, it did not disapoint. This was the best bowl of sausage and peppers I have had to date! Portion was hearty and the flavor was incredible. Overall experience was the perfect stop before the quick walk to Yankee Stadium! I will be back!

Yelp
Charming oasis not far from Yankee Stadium. It's been here since 2017 but looks older in a good way. Nautical theme, very good attentive service and food. I had pistachio pesto pasta. My wife had a mixed drink and the eggplant parmesan. All good.

Yelp
On several occasions especially when I've ordered oysters I have been what I feel like is tricked. First I prefer smaller oysters such as wellfleet. At least twice I've had to tell them these were not the right ones. They tried to give me larger east coast oysters. Secondly, after I've finally received the correct oysters they didn't have any cocktail sauce so they replaced it with marinara sauce. WITHOUT telling me so I ate the raw oysters with Marinara sauce!!! Yuck!! I asked the waiter as if he made a mistake if he could replace it with the right one. He told they didn't have anymore cocktail sauce. Lastly, I tried one more time the oysters literally began to like burn my tongue because they served me spoiled oysters.

Yelp
The food is very excellent, I had the cavatelli salsiccia and it was very delicious!! The service was awesome and the ambience is energetic!! I would definitely come back here again!!!

Yelp
While walking around Grand Concourse, we noticed that this restaurant stuck out like a sore thumb. It looked so chill so, we walked in. Food: 5/5 I was hungry so, I started by ordering two of every oyster on the menu ( 8 oysters together). They were fresh and delicious but, definitely loved the Blue Point! Then we ordered the short rib risotto and the lamb ragu Pappardelle. Both absolutely greatly sized and so tender! Hand downs one of the best risottos I have had ever. Service: 4.5/5 I wanted to start by saying they did an amazing job. They were very attentive and always checked up on us. My only deduction comes from a lack organization during the service on which servers cover which tables. We started with one server, then another one took over, and the original came back asking for our entree order which had already place with the other. We were only one of two tables so, I didn't anticipate that being an issue. All in all, I would definitely go back. The food was delicious, the drinks were smooth (#BasilHayden), and the atmosphere was causal and chill. I can't wait to go back for drinks and dinner with friends.

Yelp
Good little gem not too far from the courthouse in the Bronx. Small, quaint restaurant with good food and reasonable prices.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place since it opened. What better time than summer? PROS: Very friendly staff Fast and attentive service Chef circulates to ensure/ask if food is good You don't feel rushed Great drinks Great desserts The branzino was delicious Clean restrooms 15 minute walk from the subway station (B, D, #4). Bus (#6) to subway is across the street. CONS: Too dimly lit. Even in the middle of the day you can't see the menu. Uncomfortable seating. Hard chairs and wooden benches. To their credit, they've placed decorative pillows for you to lean/sit on. However, in this day and age, who's using a cloth pillow that hundreds of other customers have rested upon? FINAL THOUGHTS: I thought the salmon, pasta, and lobster ravioli were going to be my forever go-to's, but they didn't taste the same/as appetizing on subsequent visits as the first time. The pear and arugula salad was good but just a bit too salty. I'd try it again and ask for no salt next time. I think this is a welcoming, reasonably priced place to come and relax over drinks and dessert, and I would return in the future.

Yelp
Great place! Husband & I were so hungry after Yankee opening day. Sangria was delicious. Caesar salad was amazing. Pasta was delicious. Pink sauce - 10/10. The service was awesome too!! A+++

Yelp
This food is good, really good. I've been coming here for years and I am always pleased. The drinks are also excellent. The chicken Milanese is outstanding. I also love their eggplant which they made a couple of different ways but always delicious. It's friendly, small, comfortable. I usually meet a friend for a late leisurely lunch and some drinks. The server is often the bartender because we are there between shifts. This is a great little gem in the neighborhood. It's out of the way but worth the trip.

Yelp
Great ambiance. I had the grilled octopus as well as the Mango salad -- delicious!! Service was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The food is delicious. The steak and eggs for brunch is great. I do think it's pricey for the neighborhood however we still splurge and enjoy the food and ambiance

Yelp
Excellent food and ambiance. I sad they don't deliver, but that should stop you from enjoying a really really good meal!

Yelp
Love it: the ambiance, the service and the food. We went after Yankees' game against the Tampa Bay a.k.a champabay, left at 7th inning when there wasn't a run!! OMG guys, can you hit? It's a bodega neighborhood but this little gem is just perfect for a after game meal or drink. The house wine are pretty good. The zucchini is something, so is the branzino and the shirt ribs (tender). All are delicious and well presented. If you like fish on the bone, you should come here, and ask for it: the last time at Kyma in Roslyn they messed it up, and served me with the filet . The fish is well prepared and ... sorry I ate it with my hand at some point. Hope there isn't a camera to record this.

Yelp
I ventured up to the South Bro no thinking I was going to eat on Arthur Ave. I remember my cousin told me about this restaurant on 161st St., a 15 minute walk from Yankee Stadium. I had two different salads and was full. I couldn't eat a full plate of pasta but I wanted to try the meat sauce and it was great. The service was friendly and on point. Great Experience

Koji C.

Yelp
I enjoyed the food, but the service could've been better: 1) they forgot to pack some of my food that I requested. 2) Also, would've liked the food to come out in order, as opposed to everything coming out at once. 3)they were speaking Spanish to me and my girlfriend....which we were not, felt a little presumptuous. 4) they brought the wrong bill which was nearly double ours and didn't apologize. Individually all of these things aren't a big deal but having worked in the restaurant for years, it felt like our experience with the waiter lacked effort.

Yelp
I came back to this restaurant after many years moving out of the city came back wanted to check out my old spot trying to have a good time but it was the complete opposite. My friend ordered a steak medium well, the chef sent out a burnt steak & had the nerve to talk sh*t in Spanish for several minutes. We let it be known we did not want anything this chef will send out since we were extremely worried the chef would tamper with the food. Little did he know we also speak Spanish Pendejo!!! (Our table was the one right next to the kitchen so we heard everything so distasteful.) The most wild part was how long he stood trying to argue with the server as well because she told him he was in the wrong and should've never sent that plate out. What was the most crazy part was the fact we were the only 2 people in this restaurant at the time. The server Stephanie and the manager Thomas apologized for the whole situation I appreciated that but will not be returning.

Yelp
Porto Salvo is a place I go to when I want delicious Italian food. The service is amazing and you can always find the vibe to be great

Yelp
I've been coming here for over two years and absolutely love this spot, and it saddens me to write such a review. On my last visit, I was placed near the basement door (food prep), and the smell of death coming from the basement prevented from ordering a meal. However, I did have the Amazing Tuna Tartare and fabulous cocktail.

Yelp
Had to update to 5 stars .. this place is one of my favorite Bronx gems for food and drinks it's affordable and tasty every time.

Yelp
Made reservations for a party of 11 and had to add more people about an hour before I arrived and they could have not been more gracious. When we arrived, the staff were ready. Tamika is a gem. She was patient and attentive. Juan worked well with Tamika. I did not get the bartender's name, but she was helpful and friendly. The food, drinks, and dessert were excellent. Thank you to the staff in the kitchen who prepared the delicious dishes. I was happy to bring our guests from Ohio to your SAFE PORT.

Yelp
Great selection of drinks, wine and food. Some of the best food in this area. The servers are all so kind and accommodating. And the ambiance is very chill and unique.

Lovely dinner! All the food was so fresh! High quality ingredients! Nice specials too! Of course I took a picture after we dug into the food. But it was so nicely plated! Calamari is super yummy my kid ate it! The drinks were really nice we got a Margarita and the tamarind drink which was smoky. Yummy great and very attentive staff!

Yelp
This is my second review of this establishment. I've been here about 10-15 times and I usually love it here. My last review, I believe I gave this establishment 5 stars because the food is so good mainly. The drinks are good too and the happy hour is great, I love the shot and the beer for $8. Now, a few times I have eaten here for lunch and the service was slow but the food was so good and the staff was friendly so I looked past that and still gave 5 stars. But, now I have to do another review, mainly because I feel it's my duty as customer and an elite Yelp member. So, my last experience here was a few days ago, on Good Friday actually. First off, I hate to give this bad rating but I had to be honest and I also hate to give negative reviews to places in the Bronx because I love the Bronx so much but this is my true experience. We were doing a little birthday celebration for my wife, and we work for a big agency. So probably about 30-40 coworkers were going to meet us there. Which we done this many times in the past, and it was never a problem before. So I walk in and I see about 6-8 of my coworkers waiting by the small part of the bar by the entrance. Now, Almost all the tables were empty ,except for about 2 in the back, so we asked why don't you guys sit and they said they were told they CANNOT sit at the tables because we didn't make a reservation. So my wife goes to talk to the staff and they reiterated that we didn't make a reservation, so she ask, are all these tables reserved? They said no , so she ask ,who can sit there? They said , for the walk ins. So my wife said , well we just walked in , so we can sit there. The staff says , you can sit but you all have to be on one tab. That was fine with me, but a lot of people didn't like that, because some were eating , some were just drinking, some were planning on staying for hours and some for only one drink. So, a few more of our friends came and some sat at the tables and two of my friends sat at the bar. My friend at the bar wanted to buy us a drink and asked what we like, and the bar tender said he couldn't order at the bar , he had to sit with us and join our tab. My friend was so confused and asked why can't he just sit at the bar and order drinks and pay as he goes but they said no , to go join our tab, I guess because he spoke to us and knew we knew each other. So at this point the staff had very unwelcoming faces and they just seemed mad that we were there. The entire staff had a bad attitude and just bad demeanors. I don't know if it's because it was Good Friday and they wanted to close early or it was just because they just didn't want to deal with such a big group. So, we all decided to just leave to the draft house a few blocks away. When we all were getting up to leave , I just asked the staff, why they were acting like this ? I said there's about 12 of us here and about maybe 15-25 more people coming, so why would they want to lose all this business? They just looked at me , and literally did not care. I asked again, saying can you just explain to me why you want us all on one tab and why would you rather have us leave and lose money and they literally smirked and shrugged their shoulders, basically saying , we don't care. Then the bartender said this is how we always do it and I said I been here many times and you never done this, again he just smirked and shrugged his shoulders basically saying , I don't care. So before I left I said, I gave you a good review on Yelp before and the owner responded and I'm actually Elite on Yelp and I'm going to write this experience in a review and he looked at me and shrugged his shoulders again, to say I don't care. Then I left. Now, I know this is a successful business and they don't need my business but I feel that , they were very unprofessional and just disrespectful. They get a lot of business from teachers in the area and from lawyers in the area, but they definitely lost a lot of customers for life. I don't want to say , what agency we work for but it's way more of us than teachers and lawyers. It's sad because the food here is great and we love to support but I guess they pick and choose who they want to welcome in and who they don't want to serve. They made it clear that , we are not welcome. So sadly, me nor any of my literal hundreds of coworkers will ever come here again. This is a complete true experience. And by the way we had a great time in the draft house and spent well over $1,000 there, and they were more than happy to accommodate us. But ,like I said ,Porto salvo probably doesn't even care because they are so successful.

Yelp
I'm a 55 years old new yorker, this is the worse service I've had on all my life,,,,,, When I came in there was 1 table with 3 people seated , I i ordered 1 beer and 15 minutes later it hadn't been served,,,,, I looked at the waitress and she was just talking to someone at the bar,,,,,,, I said: can I get my beer? Lololol ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, she said : sure , and served me.no acknowledgement about the long time waiting for my beer on a empty room ...... later dinner came and these people never asked me if everything was alright with my food, or if I wanted anything else....... again,,,, the floor was empty, 2 tables only. .... I'm never going back..... again,,,, worse service I've experienced in New York

Yelp
Great spot for a special occasion. The price point is a bit high for the casual dining in the neighborhood. If the dishes are about 10-20% less, I would frequent this place a lot more. There are quite a few Italian options in Harlem with lower price point/similar quality, but this is definitely one of the best spots in this neighborhood!
google avatar

Justine A.

Yelp
Honestly the best Italian food I've had, everything was cooked well, seasoned well. The service was great. It's a cozy spot, but that didn't take away at all from our ability to hear each other or feel comfortable. It was a great time, will definitely be back.

Heather S.

Yelp
The food is not bad and the service there are always friendly and pleasant. The place is very small, but that also gives you a welcoming sense. I love the ambience because you can go wild with your imagination as to where you actually are while you are there. It just happened at the place I was sitting was close to the bathroom and I could smell it so that really didn't work for me. However, the place was crowded. So lots of people were having a wonderful time.

Shari C.

Yelp
I have been coming to this establishment for a very long time , and can say the service has become completely unprofessional. We arrived at the restaurant at 11pm as the website shows they close at 11:45pm The bar manager that was working the bar yesterday decided turn off the lights and tell us they are closed . Which is very odd because there was people sitting there eating and a few people at the bar . Once we said to him we thought according to the website they close at 11:45pm he started to verbally attack us while sitting at the bar for no apparent reason . As sitting there and listening to the things he were saying you can tell he was highly intoxicated. As a loyal customer that comes here very often that was highly offensive. This has definitely changed my outlook on coming to this restaurant .

Yelp
I've been going for the past two weeks, I have to say I love the atmosphere and the food is fresh. Jonathan (the bartender) has been phenomenal and it's always great to chat! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Great. Food, Service, and ambiance. This is a nice place, came here a few times. I do come here often when I'm in the area. I do recommend

Yelp
Just home from an excellent meal at Porto Salvo! My husband order the pasta w pistachio pesto-- the pasta was homemade fresh short twists, the pesto was incredible. I had the short ribs w mushroom risotto --the meat was tender, falling apart and deliciously sauced, and the risotto was delicious. They gave us a little paper bag of good bread and some ricotta and olive oil to start -- really good. We decided to share a basil crème brûlée, which was perfect. Good crowd . The table next to us was enjoying a platter of oysters. Great place.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. Everytime i come here, i feel welcomed. This place always gives a warm and inviting feeling. The service is always immaculate and on point. The food is always fresh and tasteful. This is one of the best Italian places in the Bronx. I highly recommend to come here! You won't be dissapointed.

Yelp
Definitely did a whole 180 since the last time I've come here. Waited 30 minutes for a waiter and then was rushed to order since the kitchen was closing in ten minutes. Appetizers and small plates came out at the same time. Felt rushed. Appetizers were burnt. Left the roof of my mouth bothered. Small plates had shrimps that weren't fully cooked. We were disregarded. The food was rushed. Came out bland. Please Don't come here after 10pm on a Friday. Still a great place I just wouldn't go back there anymore. No longer a fan.

Yelp
I would've gave a 5 star and below you'll understand why I didn't.... Ordered a seafood salad which consisted of literally 2 pieces of shrimp , 4 pieces of calamari, 9 tiny mussels , and 1,000 pieces of oranges which I picked out ofcourse. The flavor of the food was definetly amazing I cannot complain about it but the fact that it took 45 min to get served a plate full of oranges was pretty wild. Wish there was more of those delicious tasting calamaris and shrimp on my plate. My friend ordered the Bolognese and she loved it , she came to this restaurant before and this is her all time favorite meal. The meat platter was also super delicious , I loved trying all these different meats and cheeses and I definetly recommend for a person who loves cheese and meats as a finger food. If I go again this will be my starter!

Yelp
Great foot, you won't regret eating there. The service is very small restaurant typical, but you will fell at home. A must visit in the Bronx.

Yelp
Hidden in the Bronx, Porto Salvo is a lovely Italian restaurant where you can sit, eat, and socialize with friends. Drinks are well made and staff are willing to accommodate my dietary restrictions. Mushroom bruschetta for the win-super flavorful! Would love more vegan options.
