We chose PortoBay hotel for the room view, facilities and the view from the pool, to start celebrating my upcoming 50th birthday.|Upon arrival we were told that the pool area, pool bar and fitness centre would be closed for the whole duration of our 6 night stay. These were planned works and therefore, we should have been informed in advance, to give us the opportunity to cancel our booking and chose a different hotel, which given the circumstances we would have done. |The same evening, we emailed the hotel regarding the situation, to which we did not receive a reply. The next day, after raising the matter with reception, we received an email from Gustavo Zanotto. As a form of compensation he offered to include breakfast and upgrade our room. We were informed by reception that it was their best room. However, we soon discovered that it was directly beneath the works taking place above, so noisy! A hotel without a pool etc is not what we booked and we paid for facilities that we could not use. |Our preference would have been our original room with use of the pool, pool bar and gym facilities. Therefore, we were left feeling highly disappointed, especially as our stay was for a special occasion. |The turndown service (if you can call it that) consisted of a couple of chocolates but you only got them if you happened to be in the room at the time. We have also never been to a hotel before where you have had to pay for the coffee in the room.|By far the best part of our stay at this hotel was the beaming smile of Carlinhos at breakfast. He made everyone feel special and his customer service was exemplary. He is a credit to the hotel and management should be trained by him in delivering exceptional customer service. |We would definitely visit Rio again but would not stay at this hotel.
