Posada Real Torre Berrueza

Stopped there overnight during bike trip, very helpful & welcoming service. On one side, I was glad it was a low season still, other hand pity because I guess this place gets even more charm at full swing. Recommended!

This small hotel is the closest you will feel to staying in your very own small castle. The building is a historic and charming stone house with eight rooms and a common beautiful great room that serves as a shared living room. We stayed during the winter and the fireplace was a treat. The rooms are classic but with all modern amenities. The beds and pillows are comfortable and luxurious. The bathrooms are modern and spacious. Service was amazing. Olga and Juan were kind and wonderful hosts, always available but also allowing for complete privacy as a small hotel requieres. The restaurant is set in a separate tower just ten steps from the main house. Juan was the chef and all the meals were superb. Breakfast table was set beautifully every morning. We had some very memorable dinners which were up to par to any Michelin star restaurant in Europe. I would definitely reccommend Torre Berrueza and hope to return.

We stayed here for two nights before returning back to the UK on the ferry from Santander and loved it! The descriptions provided in the last few reviews accurately describe this gem; it was a really lovely place to stay, of historic interest and Juan and his wife (the owners) provided us with the most delicious food in the restaurant. It was a fabulous experience. We visited with our small dog and Juan was able to recommend some lovely places to visit locally where we could also enjoy some interesting walks. The hotel is less than an hour and a half from Santander and because we had plenty of time before our ferry Juan suggested a lovely scenic drive through the mountains rather than the main road route. It was a lovely drive and a perfect end to our holiday.

We were planning to stay in the Carranza Valley to see the Palaeolithic sites, but our preferrred hotel there was closed. Instead we simply looked for a well-rated hotel anywhere in the vicinity and came here completely by chance. We found a delightful small town with a helpful tourist office and heaps of good walks, and an absolute gem of a hotel-restaurant. We planned to stay just the one night, booked for two when we arrived and ended up staying for four.||||It is owned and run by Juan and Olga, who are some of the kindest people we have met on our travels. They were so keen to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed, even - or perhaps especially - when we were the only guests in the hotel. ||||The hotel is housed in what was a twelfth Century fortress, which means it is solid and rather dark inside. Would be brilliant in the heat of summer, I'd guess.||||The "great room" downstairs is well equipped as a public area, although rather cold when we were there in winter. My only slight complaint here would be the lack of facilities for making anything but black coffee. There is a coffee machine and espresso cups, but a kettle, some tea and milk for white coffee would be a great addition.||||The room was small but had adequate storage and a comfortable bed. It is rather thrilling having arrow-slits for windows. The bathroom is small but perfectly adequate, especially when you consider it's been added to a twelfth Century fortress! There was plenty of hot water although again, in winter, not quite hot enough for us.||||Breakfast was served in the restaurant (which I will review separately, but was fantastic) and was plentiful and fresh. On weekends, when Juan was running it, he offered hot breakfast as well as the usual fruit, meat, cheese continental offerings, but we are not really big breakfast eaters so we didn't take up his kind offer. Our only slight objection here is really a cultural one, and that is that breakfast was only available from 9:30 onwards, and as we were there to walk, it made our days start very late. But that's Spain! Everything happens late!

This was our 2nd stop on our 3 week road trip around Spain. Espinosa is a typical Spanish village, there was a fiesta taking place when we were there which added to the atmosphere. Or room was very comfortable and the hotel was very quiet and restful. ||We ate here on both nights and the food was excellent and great value. The breakfasts were fabulous, so much choice all laid out on our table, beautiful!||The owner was also so helpful, I said we were going to visit Orbaneja and he drew a map of how to get there and suggestions of other places to visit including a beautiful tiny Roman church and a ruined monastery that we would never have found on our own! He also suggested visiting Frias on the way to our next destination. This is a beautiful unspoilt part of Spain and a great place to stay.

Everything about my stay there was perfect and I can't recommend the Posada and the area enough! ||The posada was incredibly cozy and beautiful and the owners are the loveliest couple. The food that he prepared was out of this world - I still dream about the breakfasts and dinners! They also went out of their way to give us great recommendations of places to go and things to see and helped make my boyfriend's birthday extra special. ||||The rooms were spacious and quiet and clean and I loved the building itself - so much character and so beautiful.||||There is beautiful hiking and towns to visit in the area and it's close enough to drive to other smaller towns as well if you choose to. ||||I can't wait to go back again! Thanks for making it the best possible trip!

We were there for 8 days cycling. The hotel offers all what is needed for cyclists. Ample and clean room with good bed, adequate storage space, modern shower, hairdrayer on demand. The breakfast is excellent and complete. Same remark for the dinner. The geographic situation, where Castillia, Cantabria and Pays Vasco join, offers a plethora of cycling tours across high and medium mountains (we completed 1100 kmts for an accumulated height of 16500 m, without requiring to repeat too much the same sections).

We stayed for one night on trip from Bilbao (about 1.5 hrs away). This beautiful rural hotel is worth going out of your way to stay at. The owners (welcoming and very helpful) have lovingly restored a 12th Century Tower house, making a stunning and comfortable small hotel, and opened an unmissable restaurant (the food was great!) in a separate building to complement it. They retained as many of the features of the original tower house as possible (you’ll see original beams, stonework, we even had arrowslits in our room) yet the interior decoration is light and fresh. Both the hotel and restaurant are filled with small and beautiful details, just too many to enumerate. You can walk out just behind the hotel to find an extensive area of other tower houses in various states of repair, and medieval buildings – a historical gem of an area. The whole town is set in mountains; a wonderfully relaxing place to stay.
