On the Grid : Post Office Pies

"Housed in Avondale's former post office, Post Office Pies, like the building’s previous tenants, really know how to deliver the goods. A collaboration between Saw’s Soul Kitchen owners Mike Wilson and Brandon Cain and expert chef John Hall (who cut his teeth at New York City icons Gramercy Tavern, Per Se, and Momofuku, all while running a covert late-night pizza-delivery service out of his tiny Cobble Hill apartment), Post Office Pies is the perfect combination of mouth-watering, hand-tossed pizzas with locally sourced ingredients and cooked to perfection in wood-fired brick ovens, unique, savory salads, and a bar stocked with Avondale Brewing Co. brews, booze, and craft sodas. Named among the 33 Best Pizza Shops in America for three years running by Thrillist, POP’s industrial, casual, long-tabled space is a must-try lunch or dinner spot for students, families, and nightlife crowds alike. Try their famous Swine Pie (tomato sauce, house-made pork sausage, pepperoni, Nueske's bacon, stringy mozzarella, and fresh basil) and wash it all down with one of their signature crafted beer cocktails like the popular King’s Spring (a blend of Avondale Peach Saison with blueberry simple syrup, lemonade, basil and a splash of lemon)." - Lewis Communications

I was in Birmingham for a work trip and this restaurant was recommended for dinner and sounded interesting. The place was very busy but we were seated quickly and able to other appetizers and drinks. I was with a group so we ordered several pizzas and shared them and they were all delicious. While there our server said that part of the reason things were so busy was because this was their last weekend to be open. That is sad since their food was incredible but change in inevitable.

I went for dinner tonight and they were really picking up speed and getting busy right after we were seated - our server Hannah was wonderful! The cheese garlic bread we got was REALLY good! It was interesting between the fact that it was on a pizza crust and the blend of cheeses they used but really yummy. We got a margarita pizza with pepperoni added and it was good but definitely not the best margarita pizza I’ve ever had. The cheese was quite sparse and I was also pretty disappointed that it didn’t have any fresh basil on it. Had the cheese just actually covered the whole pizza it would have been a lot better. I feel like if we had done a normal pepperoni pizza we would have been much happier overall. Their sauce however is really really good! I’m from up north and it wasn’t anywhere near as good as the pizza you can get up there 😭 but pending how the normal pizzas are I’d say it’s as close as you can get without going to Krogg Street Market in ATL. We will go back and try a normal pizza and I’ll update the review.

I'd noticed this place when dining at a restaurant nearby and made a note to visit if ever in the area again. I was shopping with my son and passed by. He happened to be hungry, so I got a chance to try it. I ordered Margherita pizza, and my son ordered Italian. He truly enjoyed his, and mine was tasty, too. The restaurant itself was cozy and had music playing as we dined, which I found entertaining. The staff was great as well. Enjoyed the experience!

Google
Came across this rare gem while looking for a unique place for pizza with a relaxing atmosphere. We were warmly greeted by the staff when we walked in and they took time to discuss the various options on the menu and even made suggestions based on what we told him we liked. On this trip we chose the goat and unique combination that turned out to be delicious. We enjoyed the atmosphere of this place and afterwords we spent time talking with the staff and the chef regarding the location and things that are offered in and around the area. I look forward to when we can come back and I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

My husband and I dined there for the first time on July 6th. I had a custom made to order pizza and my husband had the supreme. Both were delicious. We want to give a shout out to the hardest working team I’ve seen in awhile. Sitting at the bar, we could observe the entire process of making the pizzas, to cooking and then boxing up or serving. Hannah was just amazing and so kind and sweet. Winston is like a machine and a master at his craft, rolling out the dough and the masterful way he has of tossing it in the air..perfection with each one. Jared worked hard and was so gracious and welcoming. I don’t have names of the others who also were working non stop (which is a testament to the great pizza and plethora of orders flowing in) Looking forward to our next visit! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If, when you walk in, you are greeted by a gentleman with a beard named Nicholas, just know you are an excellent hands. From a well crafted cocktail to a beautifully constructed Caesar salad and the most delicious pizza ever, he has made our time here so delicious And he’s cute too. Give this man a raise!!!! and just know that we will be spreading the word far and wide, to whomever is hungry that this is the place to go for an amazing experience I affordable price. And do yourself a favor and order the postal punch it packs a punch it’s delicious and again, well crafted cocktail brought to you by Nicholas. 5+ ⭐️ FOR SURE!

Google
Great location and pizza was good. Cheese garlic bread was good as well. Service was positive but could be better! It was late 9 on a Sunday night! Will be back due to location!!

Google
Great pizza, great music, great creativity! I wanted to try one of their speciality pizzas but I had my picky eater with me so we got the Pepperoni Pizza. It was super cheesy and delicious. Our waiter was very sweet. Everyone was so accommodating. They definitely made us feel welcome. I highly recommend stopping in for some pizza!

Yelp
Hey guys!! Decided to give this particular location a try after having been semi-regulars at the OG since opening, was sad to see it close, but I get it. To the food, we actually tried the weekend special..12" 1 topping, 9" cheese bread and a pitcher of beer for $25... very good bargain!!! The pizza was fabulous..thin crust, pork sausage and ample cheese. The cheese bread was good as well...basic cheese pizza w/no sauce...and a side of marinara for dipping. The beer happened to be Mich Ultra, I think it should have been PBR but they were out and subbed this instead. All of the food was good and wifey and I will def be back. The restraunt wasn't overly crowded, nice and bright...and clean. Great place for lunch/dinner. And big thanks to Jarred...thanks for the fantastic service. Will see you soon my friend...

Yelp
Unique flavor all pizza are made for the order really cute spot. The staff was very friendly and polite and made some great recommendations.

Yelp
Post office pies used to be one of our favorite spots for pizza, but now competition is steep in Birmingham. They do have a unique menu of wood fired pizzas, but we do find their quality inconsistent. If you like a cheese heavy pizza, this may be more of your taste. The sidewinder app was a pleasant surprise - great bite and a tasty sauce to accompany. The bartenders and servers are always friendly and fun! Overall, this local spot is a fun casual place with great art and TVs to catch a game with your food.

Yelp
Tried post office pies during lunch. We were greeted immediately upon arrival. Parking was terrible so it was surprising to see the restaurant mostly empty. We decided to sit on the patio which has very comfy chairs. It took a while for our server to come but he was great! Ask for Jacob the next time you come in! They do have a lunch combo with a pizza and drink but we decided on a pizza and one of their newer sandwich's with the sidewinders. The sandwich uses the pizza dough as the bread so it was very interesting. I decided on the porchetta sandwich. It was lacking flavor for me, but I would go back and try their Italian sandwich.

Yelp
We came in Wednesday around lunch and had a great experience. The bartender Jacob was phenomenal. Not only did he have great energy and was very kind, he made some great drinks. I had the punch and the basil cocktail and they were both great. Jacob really made the experience incredible with delicious drinks. Best place to go in Mountain Brook!

Yelp
My daughter and I dropped in while on a roadtrip from Texas to Virginia when we stopped in Birmingham to visit family. I was looking for a local/non-chain pizza place, and this one popped up, so we headed over. My daughter tried the Margherita pizza and loved it ("best Margherita pizza I've ever had!"). I tried the GOAT, and it was definitely worthily named. I usually avoid onions on pizza, but the combination of toppings and a ricotta base piqued my interest. It was love at first bite: the crust was precisely what I look for in a pizza (had both crunch and chew), and the hot honey put it over the top. The atmosphere was laidback and relaxed. The service was great: they kept our drinks filled, and checked in on us throughout the meal (but not annoyingly often...just right). Next time we visit Dad in Birmingham, we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Ordered delivery on a four ingredient 9" pizza. Maybe 1 oz of toppings. $22. Really?

Yelp
When Post Office Pies opened in the Avondale district of Birmingham, they arrived at the perfect time and the name was befitting. Using the location of a former post office building and just next door to a vibrant local brewery, it was a no-brainer... after all who doesn't love a good cold brew and a slice? The first time I ate there, I had the Chicken Pesto and was sold. The crust was amazingly light, and the savory flavors of fresh pesto as a base sauce really shined through. Logistically, Post Office Pies should have always had a significant crowd, especially on the weekends. Across from Saturn, next door to Avondale Brewing Co., and around the corner from several newly renovated apartments, the audience is alive and well. I wasn't too thrilled to see them close up shop and relocate to Mountain Brook, but things happen for a reason. Nevertheless, the business is still rocking but now I get my slice to-go, not feeling the Mountain Brook vibes. It's a little too boutique-ish but the quality of pizza has not faded. If you have gluten allergies, they have a cauliflower crust that is unique, and not bad at all. But my personal favorite is 'The GOAT,' which is what I aim for now when I walk in the door. It has Ricotta, pepperoni, mozzarella, and goat cheese, and they use Mike's Hot Honey drizzle on it, too... Winning!!!

Yelp
We always enjoy our time at Post Office Pies! Great pizza and good service. There's a pizza for everyone here.

Caden M.

Yelp
I have been to a lot of pizza restaurants. This one was the worst experience I've ever had. There were maybe 5 other tables and not that many take out orders. Somehow some way the pizza took forever. They literally burnt the pizza twice before we got it. I hope it was just a one off but this place sucked.

Alona B.

Yelp
Yummy yummy pizza! Great staff and great selection of drinks. In a great location. Good for big groups.

Yelp
Walked in and the guy handed us menus and to choose a seat . Waited for about 15-20 minutes and nobody came to take our drink order . We eventually walked out and left . Very disappointed wanted to try this new place I've never been to , will never return time wasted . HORRIBLE SERVICE. If they aren't already hiring I think they should start . I recommend going to another broken egg , they had our food out in the amount of time we spent waiting at post office pies .

Elizabeth a.

Yelp
I know this made some best of list but I found it kind of ‍. Mozzarella appetizer was a bit well done. I ordered chicken pesto pizza and although it had a good taste it was dry

Tammy P.

Yelp
The pizza in this place is awesome. Crust had a nice crunch and not much grease for a pizza so that was nice. We also ordered the garlic dough knots with marinara which were delicious. Our waiter was very attentive and kind. Nice place for great pizza!

Yelp
So good. Friendly staff and good vibes. Pizza was so good I liked hanging out at the bar .

Yelp
We got the Pepperoni and Chicken Pesto. We like the pepperoni one better. The sauce was delicious and large slices of pepperoni so that you get it with each bite. Chicken pesto was ok. The chicken pieces were too dry for my liking. The staff were friendly. I will visit again.

Yelp
Not sure why the ratings are low but my wife and I had a great experience. I tan was late afternoon and we had the goat and the supreme. Both were totally different but both were delicious and well cook! Service was great as well! Will be back.

Yelp
I went for lunch and ordered the 9" White pizza. The bartender (the only person taking orders and delivering pizza to tables) was very polite, and let me know there was no ricotta cheese and offered suggestions to change. Even though short-staffed, my ricotta-less pizza was cooked well and was delivered to the table in a timely manner. What I did not like about my experience, is the layers and layers of dust on the rungs of the chairs, the back of tvs at the bar, the vent pipes on the pizza ovens, the floor beneath the barstools, and at the end of the bar. The one person working the front did wipe down tables and chair seats as customers left, but the rungs of the chairs look like they have never been wiped off. As I was facing the bar area where the bulk of the dusty fixtures were located, I could not n-see it. The Mountainbrook location could use a serious deep clean.

Yelp
It's just ok. If I could give half stars, I think it really just deserves 3.5 stars. My daughters pepperoni pizza came out burned, but my husbands Margherita pizza and my own Swine pizza came out ok. Nothing tasted special though. We came at about 2-3pm, so it was probably shift change, as was apparent by the scene of half the tables all being dirty. The one guy that was working the front was friendly though. Might go back another time for a 2nd chance. Not sure.

Amy C.

Yelp
Omgsh amazing spot!! Had a delicious draft while waiting on my pie! Friendly staff, great service!! And the pizza is always 10/10!!!!!

Yelp
Their pizza was one of the worst ever seen. I did not had it, I could not eat it. Full incompetence at managing the oven. The bottom of the pizzas had sizable chunks of just charcoals. Black carbon. The crust on top same deal, burned all over. Why I did not send it back, you would say? Because I did. I originally had ordered a gluten free crust. It came out the oven dark-brown and stiff like a toast left 10 minutes in a toaster! The bottom was just back. So, I sent it back and asked for a regular crust. Same deal, it came burned just all over. Uneatable. Unless you are an active supporter of colon cancer. POP in Mountain Brook, need to up your game. Making pizza is an art.

Yelp
Just enjoyed a great meal at Post Office Pies! I wasn't sure what to expect because the reviews are quite mixed, both about food and service. I've been going to the Avondale location since it opened and was excited to try this new location. We were greeted by a staff member behind the bar when we entered. He explained there were menus on each table, but they would be offering counter service for ordering. This is how it has always been at the other location as well so it was what I expected. We ordered the Caesar salad (smaller size- we were able to share it as an app though for two people). We also got the Mac and cheese and a cheese pizza (large). They are now offering vegan cheese, gluten free crusts and veggie pasta (see menu picture) as well which is great for those who need different options. Our salad came out quickly and was perfect. Just the right amount of dressing for me. My husband (who doesn't necessarily love salads) commented that he really enjoyed it. Simple but done well. Our pasta and pizza took longer to prepare (maybe 15 minutes) which I expected since they are making everything to order. Pasta was a good portion and was creamy - might could have used a touch more salt but that's a personal preference. Pizza had just the right amount of cheese and I love the addition of fresh basil! The crust was perfectly done! I don't always get dessert out with dinner, but they had a lemon cake special of the day and I had to say yes! It was a pound cake consistency. Fresh and bright! All of our staff interactions were pleasant and the food was delicious and on par with what I expect from Post Office Pies! Great local restaurant we love supporting! I know everyone has different experiences, but our entire visit we had great service and the staff was working so hard and had great attitudes!

Yelp
Will never go back. Horrible first experience. Was there on a Thursday afternoon around 1pm. Was not busy at all. Maybe had 6 other tables of customers. Waited awhile to be seated. (Which isn't a problem) We ordered our drinks. Which was 2 ice waters, a sweet tea, and a beer. We waited forever to even get our drinks. I watched other customers get refills before we even got our first drinks. Finally, our drinks came, but still no beer. Then after awhile our food showed up, and still no beer. So at this point, I told the waiter to cancel my beer. Also, we got no napkins or plates with our pizza and we got up and got our own plates and napkins. We also got up and got our own refills at the drink station. Then before we left, the waiter, said the table that was off in the corner with the small group was the owner. If I was the owner and saw the service people were getting I would be horrified. definitely will not be going back to this place. Pizza wasn't horrible but there are way better places in town to eat pizza.

Yelp
This is a neat place that I didn't know was situated in Mt Brook. Their main dishes I'd say is pizza, however the staff is super friendly, especially the Asst GM. Very cordial and inviting. The premise is well kept, prices very reasonable, and parking very adequate. If you're look to bring out some friends, then this is a must stop. It's my understanding that this location is rather new, so lets see how they do as time goes by. As of yet, I've been there several times, and have yet to be disappointed. Hope you enjoy this place as much as I have. The only thing I ask is practice social distancing.

Yelp
Post Office Pies wasn't exactly a part of the original Sunday plans, but I'm glad it ended up to be! We stumbled across this cute eatery in the Mountain Brook area after visiting the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. It's only like 0.3 miles away and right next to Char Bar. P.O.P. Is also within walking distance of the Grand Bohemian Hotel if you ever stay there. This whole little Mountain Brook retail area where Post Office Pies is, is just a few steps away. We ate on the patio where they have a number of umbrellas available for shade, higher seating as well as traditional lounge areas and lower tables too. It wasn't too busy when we went (around 4pm) but even inside is pretty spacious if you still have any concerns with crowds and congestion. You can easily dine indoors at a table, at the bar or out on the patio. It was a gorgeous day out, and we opted for the patio. The service was great - server was masked and attentive but not overbearing. While they don't seem to require masks for entry, all staff members are wearing masks. The two of us in my party split a 12" White Pizza which was delicious, just slightly oily as expected with those cheeses. It comes with multiple white cheeses like mozzarella, Parmesan, ricotta & topped with a few basil leaves. The crust was good and must've been baked in a brick or woodfire oven. The 12" was plenty for us to share, and we even left with two slices to go. Oh and the menus are adorable....created to look like little postcards or envelopes, right in line with the restaurant brand. You may notice the regular post office is across the street but likely closed during weekend hours. For once you can find a post office open on a Sunday afternoon, and with this one serving fresh pizza pies it definitely has my stamp of approval!

Yelp
My daughter and I went to Post Office Pies in Mountain Brook last night (a Monday) and we were so excited to get some good pizza. We were sat outside on the patio. Waited almost 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge us - never happened. So, we got up and walked out. Note a waitress walked by our completely empty table at least 4 times. Very bad experience.

Caroline C.

Yelp
Went to Post Office Pies when visiting a friend in Birmingham. Pizza was fine, but the service was atrocious. My friend and I (both mid-late 20s) ordered a cocktail with our pizzas. The bartender informed us that he was unable to serve us because our IDs were out of state. He grew progressively ruder and more condescending as we politely offered alternate forms of identification or to have him scan our IDs (they don't have a scanner). Ultimately, we chose to stay and order pizza, upon which he recommended other bars in the area and that we take our pizza to go, leaving a clear impression he did not want us there. Frustrating to not get our drink, but more than that, frustrating to have the interaction be that unpleasant.

Yelp
57 min to get two pizzas in an empty restaurant (see pics). Tomato pie was so hard - like a rock. way to piss off an Italian! horrible! 7 min after the pizza arrived I was asked if we were ready for the check while starving kids were still eating the dried out pizza. terrible is a compliment! not coming back ever

Yelp
Amazing lil spot, great choice after spending time at the zoo. Great service and awesome pizza.

Yelp
If you're looking for a relaxed bar atmosphere with good food and attentive service, give it a try.

Brianna W.

Yelp
Called and made a reservation over the phone for a birthday party. I gave them my name and phone number and was told everything was good to go. We showed up for said reservation and the owner was extremely rude and told us they don't do reservations and there was nothing he could do about it and refused to honor the reservation. He told us "it is what it is" and that we would have to wait just like everyone else (which is absolutely fine if we had not made a reservation bc that was the whole point of the reservation). Literally go to ANY OTHER pizza/italian restaurant if you want friendly service/staff. We will absolutely never be returning to this restaurant.

Will H.

Yelp
Owner took our reservation over the phone for a birthday party and when we arrived he didn't honor the reservation and told us we would have to wait. We arrived on time, so why take a reservation if you won't keep it? Go to any other Italian joint to receive friendlier service.

Yelp
Good beer, wine, salads and pizza. Nice staff. Love the Mtn. Brook location. Love more when we can sit outside on the patio. Just an all around great place to have some pizza. Take out is easy too.

Yelp
Decent pizza and salad for a night in while staying the night in the area on the way to the beach the next day. 12 inch pizza was a good size for 2 of us to share. Their red wine vinaigrette salad dressing was nice and creamy. Good food overall!

Yelp
My wife and I love coming here. Our favorite waitress is Hannah. She is super nice and personable. The pizza is incredible too!

Yelp
Quality pizza with excellent crust and toppings. Nice salads. Good beer selection. Quality service. Always had good experiences here!

Yelp
Dropped in for lunch while running errands. My companion and I ordered the Caesar and garden salads. The dressings were delicious but the salads were over-dressed. You may want to ask for the dressing on the side. We shared a small build your own pizza and the meatball appetizer. The appetizer has three large meatballs served in a nice tomato sauce. They were very tasty and a good option for someone who is watching their carbs. The pizza was disappointing. The crust was undercooked in the center and the top of the crust was blond rather than golden brown. There is a nice variety of toppings to choose from and they are generously applied, however, the pie was over-cheesed. Between the undercooked crust and too much cheese the slices were gooey and limp. The ambiance is nice, the service was good, so if you aren't fussy about your pizza, this isn't a bad place to spend time with friends.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Truly one of my favorite restaurants! I rarely eat pizza but when I do, I come here and order the Margarita Pizza. I've been to both the downtown and Mountain Brook location and Mountain Brook wins hands down due to faster service and quality of food. In fact, the manager came by our table to ask if everything was ok and my friend mentioned her pizza was a bit soggy so he ordered her a fresh pizza. Great service from the both the server and manager.
google avatar

Hayden B.

Yelp
I love this place. Delicious pizza, good beer, and friendly staff every time! We always get the cheese pizza and it is so delicious. I have also had one of their veggie pizzas and man oh man what a great way to get more veggies! 10/10 recommend.

lee t.

Yelp
First the atmosphere was pleasant with tv and an open kitchen. We ordered 2 pizza they were average at best, watery and under cooked. One of the pizza that was very small as pictured that suppose to be large , I asked to see the manager. I explained to the manager both pizza suppose to be large she said that she would remake it and left with the pizza. She the a manger returned again with the pizza and said that is a large a refused to remake as she promised. She then proceeded to take out a tape measure to measure the pizza , unbelievable I couldn't even imagine what she was doing . Note the pictures is that a large pizza and see the slice half the length of the fork. She was rude unprofessional and condescending towards me. I controlled myself and said nothing at that point and just ate it. Before I left I asked to see her again and the waitress said she had already left for the night and it was only 8:45 , being the manager and leaving at that time no way!!!

Virginia B.

Yelp
Yum! Had four different types of pizzas and all were excellent. Flavorful and crust was perfect, not chewy or soggy. Can't wait to go back!

Joey H.

Yelp
Terrible service. Bartender sucks, we sat at the bar for at least 5 min before we were acknowledged. Came in to watch Braves game and eat. When asked to change the channel to Braves game, bartender said, "no, I'm not changing a channel. I have too much going on..." Intended to stay and eat, have a couple beers... Had my one beer and rolled out. I understand being busy. I was in the service industry myself for several years. But you figure it out... ask for help if you need it. Was the bartender the only person who knows how to change a channel? Won't be back.

Michael S.

Yelp
Picked up pizza to take home. Pleasant staff. Pizza was on time and was hot. Problem was markedly tough crust, almost couldn't chew it. You had to tear it instead of biting it. We actually laughed as we looked like an SNL skit with all of us ripping the pizza with all our might. The ingredients were fine, but the crust killed it. Importantly, I believe in giving anyone a second chance. This was our second experience with Post Office Pies, with identical results. We won't be back.

Brad H.

Yelp
The pizza is great but the service is awful. I've come here 3 times hoping it'll be better service like the one downtown but the pizza is never ready when they say it will be and it's a different excuse every time. Just not worth the hassle.

Michelle A.

Yelp
The salad was quite delicious, but the pizza left a lot to be desired. The pizza crust was very thin, the cheese was very thick, and when you picked it up or tried to bite it...all of the toppings & cheese came off. Although this is a pizza place, it's better to order a salad & a drink rather than the pizza.

Maddie S.

Yelp
Pretty disappointing honestly. Ordered the caesar salad, took about 20 minutes for it to come out and when it did it was not good. Almost no dressing and over all just not good. Next came out our garlic cheese bread which was basically just a pizza. undercooked and overtopped with cheese, served with extremely watery marinara sauce. Then our pizza came out pretty much the same as the "garlic bread" way undercooked and all the toppings just slid right off when you picked it up. On top of the disappointing food everything took extremely long to come out even though it was a Monday afternoon and there were only 2 other tables seated. Not the greatest experience.

SH N.

Yelp
Didn't get a chance to try the pizza. They will not customize or split any pizza, even with like sauce. So after having a beer, I went to Basil in Crestline Park and ordered the exact pizzas we wanted. We have since only gone back to Basil and I do not think I'd give this place another chance. Service was not good...that's the most generous way I can put that.
