When Post Office Pies opened in the Avondale district of Birmingham, they arrived at the perfect time and the name was befitting. Using the location of a former post office building and just next door to a vibrant local brewery, it was a no-brainer... after all who doesn't love a good cold brew and a slice? The first time I ate there, I had the Chicken Pesto and was sold. The crust was amazingly light, and the savory flavors of fresh pesto as a base sauce really shined through. Logistically, Post Office Pies should have always had a significant crowd, especially on the weekends. Across from Saturn, next door to Avondale Brewing Co., and around the corner from several newly renovated apartments, the audience is alive and well. I wasn't too thrilled to see them close up shop and relocate to Mountain Brook, but things happen for a reason. Nevertheless, the business is still rocking but now I get my slice to-go, not feeling the Mountain Brook vibes. It's a little too boutique-ish but the quality of pizza has not faded. If you have gluten allergies, they have a cauliflower crust that is unique, and not bad at all. But my personal favorite is 'The GOAT,' which is what I aim for now when I walk in the door. It has Ricotta, pepperoni, mozzarella, and goat cheese, and they use Mike's Hot Honey drizzle on it, too... Winning!!!
