The Vestiges of Southern Portugal's Islamic Empire

"The marigold façade of the Pousada Convento in Tavira, a town on Portugal's southern coast, gleams in the late-afternoon sun. Refreshing as it is to sip chilled pineapple juice in the Algarve heat, it's not the promise of shade that leads me into its cloisters. The tranquil courtyard, flanked by cheery yellow walls and weathered colonnades, is a portal to the 16th century, when the structure was built for an order of Augustinian nuns."

Firstly, the staff are very welcoming and always happy to help with any issues or requests you may have from reception to the restaurant. The outdoor pool area is nice and peaceful, especially with a refreshing cocktail. The location is great. It's about 5 minutes walk from the centre where the bar/restaurants are located and 10 minutes to catch the boat to the beach. The only negative was that the water pressure wasn't the best as the power shower wasn't the most powerful. Overall, the hotel was fantastic and would definitely stay there again.

Excellent stay. Other reviewers have said it all. I’d add that the bedding is very good and air conditioning an important plus. One small detail: the room we stayed in had no storage to enable me to unpack for my 4 night stay. Also great parking. All around wonderful. Also tried yoga on Saturday morning and it was wonderful. Super staff!

This was a special meal for our anniversary. They were charming and patient with our floundering Portuguese! Delicious food and wine. A beautiful former convent tastefully converted. All in all a wonderful evening but quite expensive, which we expected in the circumstances.

Great experience - the place is beautiful and the food is truly delicious. The service was impeccable with the exception of not having a sommelier, which for such a restaurant, it is needed. Also, perhaps, due to the heat, some source of coolness would be welcome. But overall excellent!

An extremely tranquil and relaxing stay. The hotel is so beautiful, if you like interesting and traditional buildings this is for you. Our room had lovely valley views . Unfortunately the air conditioning wasn’t working which we brought to the reception’s attention. They did offer us another room. However as the air conditioning seemed to be an overall issue, we stayed in our original room. On the plus side, the Pestana team did their best. We had two meals in the stunning restaurant, again, an extremely great team who couldn’t have been more helpful. Thank you .|Apart from a stuffy bedroom we had a most wonderful time.|We have stayed in a few Pestana hotels. They always seem to recruit the right person for the right job.|From cleaners through to restaurant and reception.

We stayed at this hotel to celebrate one of our best friends 50th birthday. Once we advised the hotel of why we were there they promptly arranged for a surprise cake and Prosecco to be in our friends room, which was a lovely gesture. ||I was taken ill that evening and our waiter Elton was absolutely fabulous and he really looked after us. We would definitely stay here again. Many thanks to Elton for all of his help.

My husband and I stayed here for a week and would go back in a flash. It is a beautiful, spacious historic facility. They have done a wonderful job of maintaining and respecting the history of the site, including hosting a small museum, while providing modern services and convenience. It is in the center of Tavira so it was easy to pop back in between exploring the town and planning our next meal. The restaurant was great, we had lunch there on arriving after a long overnight of travel and felt restored immediately. The breakfast buffets offered a full range from fresh fruit and homemade yogurts to local pastries as well as bacon, eggs etc. Plus you can ask the kitchen for eggs or pancakes. There are only about 40 rooms so nothing is ever crowded, there is always room at the pool or dining room. Our room was comfortable and quiet.

Whilst a very nice, well kept hotel in a nice setting with friendly staff and a quiet, peaceful place to stay, it is a shame that given the premium cost of a stay here the hotel charges for water in the room and - even worse - won’t replace the four tea bags (each of which is a different flavour of which you’d only like one anyway) or the 4 (again each differently flavours) coffee pods without charging you for each extra tea vag or coffee pod! And there is no kettle in the room to use them with meaning you have to run the water through the coffee pod machine that fails to properly heat the water. How can a hotel that’s gets much right spoil things with such penny pinching, the likes of which I’ve never seen in a hotel of this star rating and room rate.

Had to leave Portugal early after a two week stay at several different hotels on my way south from Lisbon. Two of those were from the Pestana group, but the Pousada de Tavira was probably the most disappointing, I had to leave a day early do to the new covid restriction in Portugal. I had booked for three nights which I payed for up front, after staying only two nights they would not refund me one night even though it was because of the result of covid, it was also to expensive considering if was off season and the buffet was probably the worst I had on my entire trip. For the cost the room was small.
