The Vestiges of Southern Portugal's Islamic Empire

"The marigold façade of the Pousada Convento in Tavira, a town on Portugal's southern coast, gleams in the late-afternoon sun. Refreshing as it is to sip chilled pineapple juice in the Algarve heat, it's not the promise of shade that leads me into its cloisters. The tranquil courtyard, flanked by cheery yellow walls and weathered colonnades, is a portal to the 16th century, when the structure was built for an order of Augustinian nuns."

We had a lovely time at this beautiful historic hotel.|We stayed in one of the suites with a balcony for just over a week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The pool area was never overcrowded, and we could always find a bed to relax on.|The staff were absolutely wonderful. We were checked in by the lovely Alex, who was incredibly helpful and very knowledgeable about the property. A special shoutout to Artur—he was terrific! Always smiling, attentive, and eager to help in any way he could.|The only disappointment was the food at the hotel restaurant, which unfortunately didn’t meet our expectations. That said, there are plenty of fantastic dining options nearby. We highly recommend Bossa, which is about five minutes down the road, and Artefact, just a couple of minutes away. Both are excellent choices—just be sure to book in advance as they tend to fill up quickly.|All in all, a wonderful stay

One of the most magical buildings in Tavira. The cloistered courtyard is exceptionally beautiful and a cool place to sit and relax on a very hot day. Food has variety and is well presented and the restaurant staff are friendly, knowledgeable and not intrusive. Wikis, Artur, Ruben and Elton deserve a special mention. Rooms have character and charm despite being a little tired in places. We had a few issues which were sorted very quickly by a fantastic manager, Ana. The pool is mostly a peaceful area with decent loungers and quality towels and showers. Pool bar accommodating. Small car park and good taxi service.

Everything about this place worked for us. We had a lovely room. The breakfast was excellent (though we really didn't like the normal coffee and opted instead for the Nespresso). All the staff were very helpful. Alex was a mine of information about the history of the building - he used to play in it when it was derelict.|We thought we'd try having supper one evening and were very agreeably surprised. Our wine waiter was incredibly helpful helping us to get the right pairings with the food. I just have to mention my prawns in garlic starter. It had the finest sauce I experienced in our entire 10 day break.

Firstly, the staff are very welcoming and always happy to help with any issues or requests you may have from reception to the restaurant. The outdoor pool area is nice and peaceful, especially with a refreshing cocktail. The location is great. It's about 5 minutes walk from the centre where the bar/restaurants are located and 10 minutes to catch the boat to the beach. The only negative was that the water pressure wasn't the best as the power shower wasn't the most powerful. Overall, the hotel was fantastic and would definitely stay there again.

Excellent stay. Other reviewers have said it all. I’d add that the bedding is very good and air conditioning an important plus. One small detail: the room we stayed in had no storage to enable me to unpack for my 4 night stay. Also great parking. All around wonderful. Also tried yoga on Saturday morning and it was wonderful. Super staff!

Our meal at Pousada Convento Tavira/Mouraria was so disappointing. We do not recommend it at all. ||We booked ahead of time and were advised by the receptionist that the chef could cater to the allergies that one of us has. A note was made on the booking detailing this. However, when it came to ordering, the waiter said there was only one fish dish that would be suitable, which was a completely different response to what we had been assured of at the point of booking. After we spoke with another waiter, they said that the chef could make a different fish dish to suit, which was reassuring. Unfortunately, however, when our food finally arrived (an hour after we’d sat down!), two of the three dishes were very disappointing, and not at all the quality you would expect given the high price. ||The seabass dish was just a small portion of buttered seabass and potatoes, nothing else. This was not made clear that it would be so bland when we ordered. The chole bhature (vegetarian chickpea dish) was minuscule and totally lacking in flavour - it was literally just chickpeas and rice! For €25 and €22 respectively, we expected a lot more, both in terms of quality and quantity! Our meal here left a lot to be desired. ||When the waiter asked us if we enjoyed our meal, we were polite and honest, as was he, however no attempt was made to put right the poor experience. All that was said was that it would be fed back to the chef and that “tomorrow will be better” - which was no consolation whatsoever when we weren’t going to be coming back! We did make it clear that we wouldn’t be returning tomorrow (as it was our last night in Tavira anyway), but no compensation or reduction was offered against our bill.||We were left feeling very disappointed, and quite frankly, feeling ripped off. It’s such a shame because the atmosphere is lovely - you can sit inside or in the courtyard, but the food and service leaves a lot to be desired. An expensive waste of money for us.

This was a special meal for our anniversary. They were charming and patient with our floundering Portuguese! Delicious food and wine. A beautiful former convent tastefully converted. All in all a wonderful evening but quite expensive, which we expected in the circumstances.

Had to leave Portugal early after a two week stay at several different hotels on my way south from Lisbon. Two of those were from the Pestana group, but the Pousada de Tavira was probably the most disappointing, I had to leave a day early do to the new covid restriction in Portugal. I had booked for three nights which I payed for up front, after staying only two nights they would not refund me one night even though it was because of the result of covid, it was also to expensive considering if was off season and the buffet was probably the worst I had on my entire trip. For the cost the room was small.
