The Vestiges of Southern Portugal's Islamic Empire

"The marigold façade of the Pousada Convento in Tavira, a town on Portugal's southern coast, gleams in the late-afternoon sun. Refreshing as it is to sip chilled pineapple juice in the Algarve heat, it's not the promise of shade that leads me into its cloisters. The tranquil courtyard, flanked by cheery yellow walls and weathered colonnades, is a portal to the 16th century, when the structure was built for an order of Augustinian nuns."

Pousada Convento Taviro was awesome. The property was beautiful and had a lot of history. The room was large and had everything we needed. We were in Portugal in November so it was a bit cool, but we're were still able to relax in their lovely pool area in the afternoon. The service from the hotel was second to none. We had a little trouble with our rental car and Alex jumped out of his chair from behind the front desk and drove it from where we were parked on the street to their secure parking area. He also gave us a short tour and history of the hotel. We were very appreciative. And the breakfast the next morning was spectacular, every kind of food you would want and more. We didn't need to eat again until dinner time that day. This was the best place we stayed in Portugal so far on our trip - we highly recommend it.

Given the hotels rating and reputation I left feeling generally disappointed. The location is brilliantly situated for the town and the buildings are magnificent giving great character. The rooms are functional (nothing special) and the wifi didn’t work in the room despite my daily feedback. The general service quality was patchy, some excellent personal interventions, wrapped up by a general apathy. Good luck getting served in the bar! I ate in the restaurant for lunch, pretty uninspiring, found better value/quality/variety options in town.

Beautiful property and excellent service from the front desk, food and beverage and cleaning staff. The location is close to town and yet there is the privacy of being away from the hustle and bustle. I had the breakfast included in my package and the selections were great. Didn’t have time to use the pool area.

this is a unique building with a good location in Tavira, a small quaint town. There isn't a ton to do here. We used it as a jumping off point for our visits to other towns mainly. The beach here is less impressive than others in the area. Note, Tavira is not right on the water, but on a river that runs to the ocean. A ferry ride is required to get to the beach. The room was basic and spacious and functional. The pool was nice and people used it. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful and very pleasant in the courtyard (a bit of construction but it was ok). The WiFi wasn't working well in our room while we were there and not much effort was made to fix it.

An absolutely lovely experience from start to finish. The property, the breakfast, the service. Special recognition to Alexander who stood to greet us with a smile every time we came to the front desk.

We had a group stay for a week. Everyone raved about the Pousada - beautiful grounds, friendly staff, delicious food. The courtyard and pool areas are so inviting and relaxing. The location (in the heart of downtown Tavira) is perfect. We will be back!

Firstly, the staff are very welcoming and always happy to help with any issues or requests you may have from reception to the restaurant. The outdoor pool area is nice and peaceful, especially with a refreshing cocktail. The location is great. It's about 5 minutes walk from the centre where the bar/restaurants are located and 10 minutes to catch the boat to the beach. The only negative was that the water pressure wasn't the best as the power shower wasn't the most powerful. Overall, the hotel was fantastic and would definitely stay there again.

Great location, hotel and facilities. Although I was unwell and unable to eat breakfast, my husband tells me it was excellent, especially the fluffy scrambled eggs.|Private car park was a bonus. Loved the internal courtyard.

Had to leave Portugal early after a two week stay at several different hotels on my way south from Lisbon. Two of those were from the Pestana group, but the Pousada de Tavira was probably the most disappointing, I had to leave a day early do to the new covid restriction in Portugal. I had booked for three nights which I payed for up front, after staying only two nights they would not refund me one night even though it was because of the result of covid, it was also to expensive considering if was off season and the buffet was probably the worst I had on my entire trip. For the cost the room was small.
