Went to Poverty Lane Orchards for the 1st time yesterday & I must say it was a great time! It was a little ways, deep into northern New Hampshire but enjoyed the colorful scenic road trip very much. I took the trip because I wanted to go to an orchard that would offer something unique &/or offered something different besides the usual country store & tractor ride. The farm was located on a nice hilltop and has breathtaking views. When I arrived-parking was easy & I couldn't help but notice all the out-of-state vehicles that was there. Must be a good place to have that many distant travelers-right? As I entered there was a table of several different variety of apples (along w/a brief history/info of each type) that you can try & taste. Pick your own-Only $1.05/lb!! You can use their bags or bring your own. I used only 1 of their large bag & I had about 20 lbs of apples in there with lots of room to spare. There is also a "map" that you can follow along to all of their apple trees which is on a number system (numbered up to about 200 different trees). The map tells you the name of the apple, tell you what particular variety it came from, peek season to pick, & whether it can be eaten, cooked or to turn into cider. There is over 50+ DIFFERENT varieties of apples ("Uncommon Apples") to be picked here. I picked my favorites--only about 30 different types. People were friendly there. I'm not sure if you can bring your dogs there but I did see some dogs there.
I definitely recommend this place if you want to take a little scenic trip & to pick & learn about many different types of varieties of apples. They have common apple varieties and the UNcommon apple varieties, that is the newest trend, beginning to be sold in natural grocery stores & whole food markets. Parking is easy & price is really good. Not a lot of "kid" activates such as hay rides, farm animal petting zoo, or creamery-just a beautiful countryside orchard with a small farm stand store.
I gave it a 4 star because the map was a little confusing to follow & it would've been better if we received a little guidance or direction from a personnel there. Also, I did not see any other fruits to be pick there.
