20 Best Snowboarding Resorts Around the World

"Quiet, tiny, and low-key, this mountain has a special ease: arrive with dry roads until the last few miles, park for free, walk 30 yards to the high-speed quad, then ride a six-minute chair before dropping straight into wide pine and aspen glades. The familiarity with staff and the no-hassle flow make days here feel effortless." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. This $67 Ski Pass for Kids Is Back—and It's Bigger Than Ever

"I see Powderhorn Mountain Resort listed among the 19 Colorado mountains included in Colorado Ski Country USA's expanded Ski Passport for kindergarten through sixth grade; the passport provides four ski days at each participating resort, includes two junior rental packages, and costs $67 for K–2 or $72 for grades 3–6, making these mountains well-suited for younger skiers while also being great spots for adults and ideal for a family ski getaway." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Why Grand Junction, CO, Should Be Your Next Weekend Getaway - AFAR

"A charmingly non-corporate ski area located on Grand Mesa that offers a more local, unpretentious winter-sports experience compared with larger commercial resorts." - Kelly Bastone

The Grand Mesa is absolutely beautiful any time of year, but especially when the Aspen leaves start to turn various shades of yellow and green! The staff at powderhorn mountain resort were very helpful and friendly!

Stayed at the Goldenwood in the off season, the rooms are spacious and cozy and have full kitchen, some community charcoal grills, even laundry if staying a bit longer. Expect more mountain cabin amenities, there are TVs and Internet, but don't compare it to a city hotel, you might be able to stream your shows, but it's remote, just unplug and relax and enjoy the breeze through the Aspens. The little town of Mesa is near for food, groceries, and libations. There are some mountain lodges not far up the pass too. Quite in the week with spectacular views of the Book Cliff's and valley below. Weekends still get a decent mountain biking community for enthusiasts and spectators with events held.

One night summer camp stop. We stopped here on our way to Grand Mesa on Labor Day weekend. We stayed here for a night and had a great spot with a great view. We never saw anyone or got any instructions. The online system made it seem like it would be more particular. Everything was easy. Thank you!

Just spent the 4th of July mountain biking this absolute gem! I came in from Salt Lake having ridden every resort there and I can tell you, this place is special. On top of being a blast the staff across the board from the lifties to the bike shop people were there to make sure I had a good time. I did blow my rear tire while there and Tyler in the shop was awesome, he plugged the tire and got me back on the trail safely. I do believe I will make this a regular destination. Thanks!

Google
No amenities, beds are on the smaller side for a couple, so be careful and don't fall off. Sofa pullout was worse. If all you do is ski, we'll your at the right place. Be prepared to take long drives..anywhere you go. Old school furniture.

Google
What a hidden little gem, not too busy, had a nice base and fresh powder the night prior to us being there!! Well groomed runs, friendly staff and mountain host, would recommend checking this place out!! Also great bang for your buck!!

Google
A great place to ski in Colorado. Powderhorn has a perfect amount of trails for people who only have limited days to visit compared to other giant ski resorts. However, most black trails aren’t groomed, which limit the options for intermediate-advanced skiers. There are little to no lines and wait times are short. A lot of snowfall in the mountains reduces the need to make artificial snow. The lodge has a microwave. Staff is friendly and welcoming.

Google
Powderhorn is a great family ski experience. Excellent ski school for the kids! The lifts are fast and easy to get on and off. Great variety of runs from easy to black diamond.

Yelp
Great experience with the Bob Beverly sky lessons program. Our instructor, Asia was amazing. She was patient and gave me perfect instruction which helped me dramatically.

Yelp
This was our first time visiting any ski resort and everyone had one of the best times of their lives. Our family of four and my daughter's family of four shared a house for rent for a week less than a mile from the lodge. Three went snowboarding all day, the first day. Lines were short, prices reasonable and down right cheap when I compared them to other CO ski resorts such as Vail and Telluride, each a couple hrs away. Staff was very friendly and always offering what ever help you needed. You would expect this level at any resort of any kind and Powderhorn's staff met all expectations. Skiing with lessons on another day was another huge success. No need to go to the top of mountain to ski or snowboard. One lift goes half way up with plenty of choices for medium to beginner hills. After setting you up and teaching some tips you are free to ski while the instructors check in with you periodically. Then for those of us that are completely inept, they offer tubing. Tubing is sledding on a specially designed inner tube on well maintained bobsled track of sorts. It was fast and fun. We all did this on three different days. $12 for adults, $10 for kids for a two hour session. AND they have a lift for that too! Simply hook your tube's pull rope on the pipe and ride your tube to the top! Over all the place did not seem crowded. Only on one day were the 35 tubes all in use. The Children's Learning Center only had 16 kids there the day we hired our instructor. The Sunset Grille upstairs was reasonably priced for being remote. Nearest place to eat anything was eight miles away in the town of Mesa. I would come back here next year to do any snow related activities in CO.

Yelp
Powderhorn has been sold to the highest bidder!!! Andy Daly, ex CEO of Vail, and the Gart Brothers are now the new proud owners of the Ski Resort itself as well as the 700 acres below. The Inn and Restaurant next door has been sold to another party. I think this will be a good turn for Powderhorn!!!

Yelp
Awesome family friendly ski facility with good food and nice staff. We have went here several tiimes over the years and are never disappointed.

Jim D.

Yelp
I have had a pass for years, no more. I only ski on powder days. You get up to powderhorn on a powder day and they have groomed everything. They don't care about the locals that buy season passes every year, just the tourists. So they just groom everything to make them happy. If you want to ski powder don't go to powderhorn. Also they have been bought out by some big outfit and food prices have gone crazy. I have not bought any food or drinks for a couple years. Lifties are not doing thier jobs, very disrespectful. So if you want to ski powder go somewhere else, if you want to ski groomers and ride one of the 2 lifts, if they are both working, head up to powderhorn.

Yelp
We currently use our summer timeshare points with RCI here. This is our second stay. Nice condo with balcony overlooking the valley. If your a lowlander or have breathing issues it takes a few days to get used to. A lot of fishing for trout in the area most walk in. The town of mesa is a few miles away and has a beer store and a post office and restaurants. The small general store is closed so pack in supplies. The town if Cedarridge is about 25 miles south and is full service. A lot of photography opportunities. Weather changes quckly and can be pretty cool. It snowed at the 11k foot level in August last time we were here. Good astronmical viewing and a lot if wildlife. Remote. Julie wants me to mention that the kitchen was not fully equiped when we arrive. If you have favorite cooking tools knives etc bring them. The refrigerator freezes food even on low (including fresh pallisade peaches, bread and greens. We changed units from the new hot tub first level 103 because we wanted a balcony. The newer unit is much nicer but dark. There is no manually adjustable heat in our unit but its pretty comfortable. Cool at night.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to ride and teach my kids to ride. No lift lines, friendly staff and great beer prices!! Love Scottty and Jesse!! Powderhorn also the BEST trees and glades

Yelp
Powderhorn..it ain't Aspen or Vail and that's good. It relatively cheap, food this year is much better that in the past, it small and being run under new owners. My family lives 2000 miles away and has a great time each time we visit. The whole place feels part of the community and makes us feel the same. They new owners seem to be getting things going in the right direction. In my opinion the views are the best in Colorado. For what it is 5 Stars.

Bryan D.

Yelp
Well, overall the instructor staff (child lessons) were outstanding no complaints and they did do exactly what they said, taught our two kids to ski and pretty well at that. Five stars as it relates to this. I do need to point out one thing, the p-card program sounds great up front but the wording and verbal confirmation we received from the staff member selling the p-cards is not true. There is no free day of skiing as stated in the verbiage. It's the good old bait and switch on this one, be aware of this if you are thinking that free lift ticket is awaiting you.

Yelp
We decided to try downhill mountain biking and had an absolute blast! We weren't quite sure what to expect, but we are really glad we tried it. My 14 y.o. son said it was one of his favorite things ever -- that's a big deal! He went on the green and blue trails, but not the black. My 11 y.o. son had a great time too, but stuck to the easy trail. I loved being up in the mountains since it was like 15 degrees cooler than the 95 degree weather in Grand Junction. The staff at Powderhorn were top-notch and super helpful. When they found out it was our first time trying downhill mountain biking, they went above and beyond to help us learn the ropes and suit us up with equipment and some awesome bikes. Everyone there was very friendly and always offering assistance. The pizza at the lodge was really good and my wife loved her salad. Overall, it was an incredible experience and we look forward to coming back!

Yelp
This was my first time skiing. I took lessons. The instructor was very good. Had a lot a patience for the uncoordinated (aka, me!). I took 4hrs lesson while my husband and nephew hit the slopes. This has great beginners slopes. The only thing is that I paid for 4hrs lesson and most people paid for 2 and they can upgrade by only paying $20 extra. That was a bummer for people that paid the entire 4hrs at a regular price.

Yelp
This is not Vail... and that's a good thing! My wife and I have been snowboarding in CO for over four years now, hitting all the hot spots like Aspen/Snowmass, Vail/Beaver Creek, Telluride, A-Basin, Crested Butte, Winter Park, etc. Now, having a baby and without a season pass we decided on a more economical option, so we went to Powderhorn not knowing what to expect. We bought our tickets ahead of time which saved us even more$$$. Total for 2 lift tickets was less than $100. The east end has some decent terrain but is really suited to the beginner/intermediate rider. The west end is where things get gnarly! If you like all-mountain freestyle terrain and powder-filled trees and glades, this is your zone. This terrain is super playful and fun. It's plenty steep for you advanced riders out there with lots of natural launches and boulder fields with pillows to play around on. And the trees are perfectly spaced. I couldn't tell you much about the grooming or the atmosphere at the base or what ski school is like, but if you are looking for advanced terrain on a budget, this is a solid option. This is coming from a rider who has hit just about every major mountain in Colorado. Loses one star for the slow lift on the west end. Minor inconvenience for the solid terrain and good vibes.

Yelp
Great resort. Recently went up around Christmas for my first time skiing in a long time. I was greeted with smiles even being Christmas everyone was in good spirits and very professional. The trails were well groomed. Will be back more often!

Yelp
Our children have taken lessons, both private and in a class, for several years. This past weekend, we were told that we are no longer to switch or do a makeup due to unforeseen circumstances. We are now out the money for possibly two classes. The people my spouse spoke with to try to change from one day to another told him that they no longer do this, even though he was told they could prior to signing up for the class. The manager also would not change the day. Even the instructors were surprised that the management would not be willing to work with us, even knowing these class switches/makeups in advance. We will be finishing the classes we are able to this year, but will no longer be purchasing season passes or classes from Powderhorn again. Very disappointed in the quality of service from management. On the plus side, all of the private and class instructors have been nothing short of amazing with my children. Please work on your WHOLE staff communication or have things like this on paper Powderhorn!!!! Four less customers from our family from now on.

Yelp
Powderhorn has some of the best snow in the Rockies right now. The deck has been rebuilt and all the tables replaced. There's more room between tables inside, and the food is better. Lift tickets are still cheap, only $56. The whole family went up on Presidents day and had a fantastic time in the fresh powder.

Greg K.

Yelp
Great West slope ski area. Beautiful terrain, great staff, local feeling. Great for those just starting. Did I say beautiful?

Karl G.

Yelp
We had epic aspen glade skiing, some good bumps and some smooooth carving on corduroy prepared by the Zen-meister, it seemed. Delicious sausage-thingies on the deck for lunch. Spectacular views. You can escape the county music because there are no lines, or by going to the West End lift, except that is even slower. Ok, I got it: your dog died, your girlfriend left you, and your truck broke. Check out "Blink Twice" in Mesa, too. Awesome.

David R.

Yelp
They struggle to get food out on time of there kitchen and there French fries are far to oily They have a hard floor surface in front of there kitchen that is dangerous With ski boots one be careful! They put in a high speed quad that might be putting more people on the hill if the lines weren't longer than usual. They have good snow this year but they didn't do that !

J T.

Yelp
Powderhorn is the perfect place for beginners and first timers. The staff makes you feel comfortable and helps you as much as they can. The snow is incredible. The ski patrol is always alert and ready to help. The prices are way below the big resorts. The views and landscape is absolutely amazing, specially if you stay in Grand Junction and travel back and fore every day. The people at the equipment rental deserve two thumbs up. We are looking forward to go back next year.

Sander G.

Yelp
A delightful fun place after the glitz and crowds of I-70. Laid back, no high-speed lifts but the ones it has are modern and comfy (not antiques like at some places), and plenty of terrain (1,600 acres, compared to less than 1,200 at the much more pricey Crested Butte to the East). Great tree skiing, and as promised (being on the edge of the desert) fine dry powder snow of the sort Utah and Western Colorado are famous for.
