We went to watch the sunrise rise which was our highlight. The walk our guide said was quite. I found it very busy but I am used to being in much quieter hikes. Since Aug 2024 there was a landslide and the full walk is now blocked so you walk down the staircase to look back at it and walk all the way back. The scenery was spectacular and we had a really nice, sunny warm day for the walk which made the day. I wouldn't have enjoyed it if it was wet and cold! I've put 4 stars only because the full hike is closed.

We went for a sunrise hike on a Saturday, showed up a little before 7am and the parking situation was crazy. Police blocked the road to the top and hundreds of cars were parking in the remote lot but there were only 2 parking ticket machines. We waited 45 min in line to pay for parking before an official came over and said we could pay afterwards. By the time we walked up we just missed sun rise 🤣 ( I added a Pic of the parking lot and the lineup for parking tickets in case you think I'm exaggerating. ) The short section of the hike that is open is very nice but the amount of people is a little overwhelming at times. Overall, I'd recommend this one but if you're planning to go for sun rise, go very early!

One of the most spectacular hikes in Madeira, PR1 Vereda do Areeiro connects Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on the island. The trail offers breathtaking mountain views, dramatic ridges, and a chance to walk above the clouds on clear days.

One of the most amazing sunrise and hiking experiences of my life. It's too bad the path was closed this year, but it was still work hiking what was open to take in all the epic views.

First time hiking, mind blown about the fact you can walk above the clouds , make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks as once I had finished hunger set in fast. Travel light , any extra weight just makes you fatigued faster. Importantly wear sunscreen as you’re getting direct sun.

Enjoyed the hike! It’s very weather dependent. It got very cloudy after 30mins so we didn’t get a view anymore. Tips- there aren’t many car park slots at the top. We chose to go later and arrived around 1pm so it was easy to find. It costs 3euros an hour. We were there for almost 3 hours so this shows how nice the place is! The road towards the car park is quite well maintained so that was really good. There is a toilet with 1euro fees.

Vereda do Areeiro – ★★★★★ An epic hike above the clouds. ⛰️🌤️ One of the most iconic hikes in Madeira, connecting Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. The trail takes you along narrow ridges, dramatic peaks, tunnels, and breathtaking viewpoints, it’s challenging but absolutely unforgettable. 🔸 Parking Info: • The top car park at Pico do Areeiro (near the radar dome) is very small and fills up quickly. • When full, police often close the road, especially during peak hours. • Best option: park at Carpark 2 (lower down the road). It’s more spacious, cheaper, and a short but scenic walk up to the trailhead. • Once at the top, you can reach Ninho da Manta viewpoint with about 20 minutes of walking — don’t miss it, especially around sunrise! 🔸 Tips: • Wear proper hiking boots – the trail can be steep, rocky, and slippery. • Take a jacket – the weather changes fast and it can get cold, even in summer. • Bring plenty of water and snacks – there are no shops along the trail. • Check the weather and cloud conditions beforehand - clear skies make all the difference. If you love hiking and nature, this trail is a must-do in Madeira. An experience you’ll never forget.

Part of the trail is currently closed, unfortunately. The hike takes about 30–40 minutes one way and is not difficult. The trail is well-maintained, so it’s easy to follow and there’s no risk of getting lost. The views along the way are spectacular, but be aware that fog is quite common.
