The garden right in front of the Jerónimos Monastery is absolutely lovely! It’s the perfect place to relax after visiting the monastery or the nearby museums. The beautifully maintained green lawns, colorful flower beds, and elegant fountains create a peaceful atmosphere where you can sit, enjoy the sun, and take in the stunning views of the monastery’s architecture. There’s plenty of space to walk, rest, or have a quick picnic. A must-visit spot if you’re in Belém!

The garden was created in 1940 for the Exposição do Mundo Português (Portuguese World Exhibition) and stands as a symbolic tribute to the Age of Discovery and the former Portuguese Empire. Designed with formal symmetry, the garden features a large central fountain surrounded by geometrically arranged lawns and flowerbeds. At the southern ends of the garden, two Cavalos Marinhos (sea horse) sculptures highlight Portugal’s deep connection to the sea and maritime exploration.

Beautiful and well mantained gardens. The area across the street from the Monastery features plants which are present in the church cloister's sculptures.
