On the Grid : Prado Cafe

"I had to feature at least two coffee shops as they are a cultural staple of "The Drive" and a big part of how people pass the time. Prado is a place to spend a rainy afternoon (of which there are no shortage in Vancouver) as it has big, open windows with tons of natural light, along with bright decor buttressed by the brick of the building. If you feel like putting some time in on your laptop while constantly distracting yourself with the steady flow of attractive people coming through the door, this is the place the place to do it. Note: impeccable quality of coffee is a given on this list and goes without saying." - Asterios Moutsokapas

Such a bright and cozy spot! Two full glass walls fill the space with natural light — perfect for working during the day or having a relaxed conversation. The music is soft and tasteful, creating a calm atmosphere without being distracting.

Google
Exactly what I was looking for. This was my favorite coffee shop in Vancouver. My boy had the espresso and I had an Americano with a hint of caramel and a chocolate croissant. The coffee was delicious and the croissant was the best I’ve had! The chocolate on the inside was perfectly creamy, not a chunk. The bread was buttery and flaky and soft. Mouthwatering. And vibe of the Prado Cafe is cool and kind of boho. Staff are very kind and helpful:) If I lived here I would visit often for sure!

Alex MZ

Google
The staff was very nice, enough space for seating, latte was good.

Google
Pretty cute little cafe. They had a couple seasonal drinks on the menu and a nice selection of snacks, but I wasn't blown away by the (autumn spice) latte or cookie (with no name). Great atmosphere and very friendly staff though! Would come back to sit and work on my laptop.

Google
This cafe is a great spot to sit and work on my laptop. I enjoyed a Cheddar chive scone today, which was very filling for a dessert haha. The only downside for me is that the long chair along the window is a bit too high for the table, causing my neck to tire easily.

Google
Very nice cafe. We got the quinoa and the avocado pea bread and both were phenomenal. Loved that the music was soft and I could relax while people watching and enjoying my coffee. Would definitely come again.

Google
Visiting from Ontario and stopped for a coffee which was delicious and rich (Americano). Also tried the grilled cheese and the cheddar and chive scone that were to die for. Great spot as an alternative to the usual big chains.

Google
It was just ok. Everyone was friendly-ish. I’m thinking just tired. Hot chocolate was fine and standard croissant was tasty. Maybe a tad on the higher price side. Atmosphere, at least when I came in at 9am, there was none. It was just very very quiet. Overall did it stand out. No. Which was unfortunate as it was recommended by another cafe which didn’t have any pastries at the time

Yelp
Street parking located in downtown. Beautiful large clean space with many tables. Bathroom available with key for customers. Cortado was beautifully made and delicious. Will be back to try some holiday drinks and pastries.

Yelp
My coffee was good. They have a plethora of breakfast items but were sold out of everything except one item. And we passed on that one menu item as it was the chorizo wrap. So weird. Didn't have time to go elsewhere for food. Oh well. Wouldn't come here if hungry but if just looking for a good coffee they have that

Ananya B.

Yelp
I loved the pumpkin spice latte and the quiet corner ai had to myself for working! The service is also very good.

Yelp
Am I in love with Prado? No. Is it a relaxing place in an otherwise challenging neighbourhood, absolutely. As one of the few places on this block that doesn't seem to have broken windows, I am pleasantly surprised with how clean and kept this coffee shop is. There are large and small tables inside with a simple yet comfortable vibe. The baked goods are wonderful, but the sandwich I had was to be forgotten. I wasn't overjoyed by the fact that a single tea is $4.20 but I will admit that it was pretty good tasting. The service came with a smile which is the bare minimum, but again, they must deal with a lot of crap (hopefully not literally) here.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, a great cafe. I grabbed a latte and a cookie and enjoyed a nice little break with a book here. The lattes are always consistent and taste delicious and smooth.
google avatar

Yelp
Was on my way to Revolver and spotted this just as it started to rain. Nice looking spot. Ordered a cappuccino. No latte art, but I really don't care about that. Cap was bitter and unforgiving. Music is too loud for me to work. Nice aesthetics, but not great to work. Wifi is sustained at 5.3 Mbps, but seems fine.

Yelp
Prado was relatively busy around 1:30pm on the Monday after Christmas; no line to order, but all the tables had one or two people, and there was no space for our group of four. After waiting about 10-15 minutes, a table opened up for us. My partner good a 49th Parallel cappuccino and it was good! But my review is mostly about the staff, who were super nice. They allowed us to order from Boba Run next door and drink it in their cafe (Boba Run did not have any seating). We had a couple toddlers and they were really sweet to our kids, giving no judgement when they were running around or when they were causing a little more ruckus in their otherwise peaceful cafe.
google avatar

Yelp
The location near Granville Island is consistently good! The indoor seating area can get quite crowded but staff are good at clearing and turning over the tables. Customers often need to bus and wipe the tables. The baking and food is tasty , fresh and made from quality ingredients.

Yelp
Great coffee spot! Decor is cozy and comfortable. Service was great and if you have your coffee to stay it comes in a cute turquoise mug. Great to enjoy some conversation and some great coffee. They also have some amazing treats like carrot cake, cookies, donuts and bars. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great cafe in the center of town. I haven't gotten the chance to sit down yet but the to go coffee experience is always great here. They have made some changes with everything going on with the virus right now and they are doing a great job!! They will put the sugar for you instead of being able to do it yourself and the sanitize their hands incredibly frequently. Great job staff and management!! The coffee is really good and it doesn't taste too strong, which is how like my bigger lattes. Highly recommend if you want to do a coffee date in downtown or want to grab some good coffee to go before going to Gastown or other nearby attraction.
google avatar

Odie O.

Yelp
Excellent service decent coffee they serve it in nice ceramic cups with spoons and let you add your own cream and sugar they close early at 3pm though
google avatar

Annie L.

Yelp
Terrible watery coffee. If you want to use the bathroom you need three keys and have to go through four doors. air took me forever to find.
google avatar

Yelp
If you like an artsy coffee shop, this could be one. The place is pretty spacious with nice inferior design, big window glasses, chandelier and big wooden table making it look like you are sitting in your living room. The mint color from their cup and plates together with their music making it so comfortable to stay here for hours working. One thing with big glass window coffee shop is that in the summer, you can get glare on your laptop but Prado has some big trees around it, prevent direct sunlight. They recently have turmeric lemonade which is really fresh for summer with nice yellow color. Only one thing I would prefer is having more outlets for people with laptop working here.

Yelp
Pros: - stamp cards for coffee - 49th parallel roasters beans - cheap brunch w regularly changing menu - sparkling water on tap for café patrons Cons: - limited seats at times (ask ppl to share. They always do)

Yelp
This is a super cute cafe in the center of a chic part of town! It's walking distance from Canada's Place which makes it even better. This is a real definition of a coffee cafe. Real coffee, and the cutest vibe. I would recommend to anyone!
google avatar

Glen M.

Yelp
Super cute little coffee shop on a corner in a not so cute area. Once we got past the homeless person blocking the door, we were served great coffee and even greater baked treats. Staff was super nice and friendly. This is a great place. Lotsa natural lighting. Wifi. Baked items. And great coffee.

Yelp
So ... just a fair warning to anyone coming here. Though this spot is so beautiful and wonderfully done. It sits on the very edge of where the East Hasting is often warned to tourist and where it starts going to a look like most west end Vancouver. My experience probably would have been much better if I wasn't for some of the concerns smothering the positives. The space is quite nice... it feels like a Scandinavian minimalist did up a cozy cottage. Lots of woods but painted black or white. Lots of white tiles, angles, and edges. It's crisp but there's an underlying comfort in it. There are lots of tables of all types so you can sit and work. Service here was quick and efficient as they seem to work the morning crowd pretty quickly. The concern is not the coffee... it's the location. For starters, parking is not easy and though it's at the edge of East Hasting, it doesn't always feel like it. For someone who lives and breathes Vancouver, this probably is normal. But for visitors, it's a stark contrast to other cities. I saw a needle on the sidewalk in addition to literal crap smeared across the sideswalks. In addition to that, the people walking about are not ... well. They didnt appear to be too aggressive but some didnt seem to appreciate our presence or anyone who was not in the same situation as them. They were inside the cafe as well and they're deserving to be there as a paying customer. But it was clear some homeless girls were hiding out in there because they didnt feel comfortable outside. It's just not a feel good story. Prado handled this as best they could ... it's just sad. Flat White - For starters, they use the popular Parallel 49 and I felt they actually did a better job than Parallel 49 on using the same beans. I still unfortunately found this quite acidic bordering towards astringent tart. I'm not sure what it is but after drinking several other places using Parallel 49 and other micro roasters in Vancouver... these beans are not my preference. 3.5/5 Overall, I want to say it's a chill and pretty place but the atmosphere was far from it. It wasn't comfortable and it wasn't the coffee shop fault exactly. Looking at other reviews, it seems my experience seems to be anomaly perhaps.

Yelp
variable sizes of coffee. nice and strong americano in the AM. add your own cream and sugar. a few more eats too but also check out cafe nemesis.
google avatar

Eunice L.

Yelp
I like this place! Solid coffee, lots of places to sit, simple written menu. Haven't tried their food but I always get their Americano and I like it! It can get really busy sometimes to find a table so that's the downside but it's an interesting place to people watch.
google avatar

Yelp
Plenty of space, solid wi-fi, but most importantly great coffee and great food at great prices! I must say I'm impressed, given the skyrocketing cost of eating out in Gastown, especially if you decide to pick a popular and a little hipster spot. But not Prado! I had lunch with two big slices of sourdough topped with cheese, arugula and prosciutto and a pot of tea for less than $10!! Prado is a must, at any time of the day, and I'm so happy they introduced breakfast, brunch and lunch options! Way to go!
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
This was a very cool breakfast this morning. Poached egg on top of greens & a slice of sourdough bread. Very tasty & filling. The BEST espresso I've had in a long time too! It was surprisingly busy for a 9:30 on a Tuesday morning. Pretty cool place, I'd go again if it's still there in 6 months. Places change fast in that area.
google avatar

Noyonima H.

Yelp
This place has some decent pastries and free wifi. Terrible furniture with no comfy seating for a café, and holding on to my ID just to pee??! A giant no thank you. Never coming back.
google avatar

LuFei L.

Yelp
The foggy windows on a cold rainy day are the perfect barrier between you and the dreadful raincouver weather. Really enjoyed the coffee and pastries. Very nice staff. It seems like quite a small and busy cafe though, so they were pretty full when I went.
google avatar

Nav D.

Yelp
Great coffee and tea selection with fresh baked goods. Perfect place to take a break or reply to some emails. On both occasions I opted for the ginger tea which comes steeped in a pot. The cheddar scone is a recommended savory treat or I'd suggest the peanut butter and chocolate sandwich cookie- its not huge so you won't feel guilty! Its a great space to get some work done with stable wifi and a restroom which is highly protected by a combination lock and then key. A bit of process to use but at least it helps keep the restroom safe and clean.
google avatar

Yelp
Cafes with cool interiors + delicious coffee are my jam! While there are plenty of cafes in Vancouver, Prado is one of my faves. Tip to all you cold brew lovers: they serve their cold brew via tap... so cool! They also serve their drinks in cute Tiffany blue mugs, which makes for great insta-worthy shots. All of that aside, their coffee is just downright delicious. I drink mine black, so they don't need to throw anything fancy in there and it's still tasty. Other pros: they have free wifi, yummy food and fun staff. I'd recommend any of their breakfast sandwiches and their granola w/ yogurt. But word on the street is all their food is worth trying. Being on the edge of East Van, you do get some interesting people who come in but it makes for great people watching. Definitely a good spot to spend a few hours doing some work, meet a friend or just grab a coffee to go.
google avatar

Yelp
Free wifi and parallel 49 coffee! They have lots of pastry options (vegan ones too), which are perfect to nom on while studying. I got the vegan apricot cookie (it was so big and just delicious - although I found it a bit odd that the cookie still tasted like it had hints of butter even though it's vegan?! What!!) and the hot chocolate. Hot chocolate wasn't too sweet and was just perfect for a cold winter day. The study space is great as there are lots of tables with outlets! The ambience is busy - but not too busy to the extent where you can't find a place to sit. Super cute atmosphere located in the heart of downtown makes it a perfect place to study or just sit down for a cup of coffee/tea. I'd recommend it to anyone and I would definitely come back!
google avatar

Yenny L.

Yelp
I like the ambiance and interior design of this place. It is located at a corner, with two sides having wide glasses for passers-by to take a good look of the wooden white interiors. Flat white here is decent, albeit I would much prefer a stronger glass. There is a cookie with no name that looks so tantalising. Please try it. Bathroom is a pain here, as you have to request for a key and go through a passage to arrive at the bathroom. Nonetheless, I find this a great meet-up place and I have set up meetings here a few times.
google avatar

Gurleen B.

Yelp
Prado cafe is a fabulous space to get some serious work done and offers delicious hot and cold drinks as well as baked goods to keep you powering through your work sessions. There is lots of seating, and wifi, but no outlets. I like the fact that the goodies are all house made fresh!
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
The almond milk latte is so thick and creamy I had to doublecheck it wasn't dairy milk!!

Wayne R.

Yelp
Tourists beware: you can't use the washroom here without possibly violating the rules of your passport which possibly doesn't allow you to leave it in the care of other people. Locals beware: if you come without your id, you'll be awfully uncomfortable after drinking one of your beverages. It's a nice place but there is a terrible bathroom policy: you have to leave your ID with them. They don't accept other valuables as alternative (like your tech device): they NEED your identification to use the washroom. I empathize that this place is near the city crime and slum area and people probably try to use their bathroom to shoot up or worse but the policy of not accepting collateral instead of ID is foolish. No leniency for me despite the fact that I was a paying, tipping customer without the usual hallmarks of someone who might misuse a washroom.
google avatar

Yelp
I first met Sammy Piccolo (the owner) in June 2009 in Minneapolis Minnesota, at Coffee Fest. We remained in touch and I followed some of his exploits on Twitter, but finally the day came (6 years after meeting) when I was finally in Canada to see his shop! The shop is great, fabulous even. Both times the baristas efficiently produced a stellar drink. Prices seem reasonable to me. Clean space with eclectic touches. Very glad I was able to visit.
google avatar

Angela K.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop across from the Woodwards building. Really bright and airy, they've made nice use of the historic space. Definitely not as hipster-ish as the Commercial drive location. Staff are always nice and friendly. They serve 49th Parallel, so the coffee is great. They've also got lots of yummy baked goods!
google avatar

Teri L.

Yelp
Had an iced chai latte and my mom had the Machiatto. It was odd as my mom's Macchiato didn't have any milk in to. I don't know it they give you the espresso black then you put in the milk yourself or they forgot to do it themselves that day. Anyway, it is only a small 4 oz drink so read the menu carefully. They label the sizing on all their drinks so you won't be deceived. I asked to make my chai latte iced since it was such a beautiful day. The barista informed me that it isn't sweetened so I asked for a touch of sweetener. Unfortunately, there wasn't a strong enough chai latter flavour. This was probably because he made it regular for a hot drink and just put it on ice which then dilutes the flavour.
google avatar

Josh K.

Yelp
Warning: Their Mocha is NOT GOOD... Our other selections were good. The London Fog was sweet and milky. The Banana Bread was moist. The Cinnamon Roll was Cinnamon Rolly. Back to the Mocha... The chocolate was all settled at the bottom of the cup. Plus, the chocolate tasted off. The milk must have been spoiled, or soy milk was used? It was disgusting.
google avatar

K C.

Yelp
One of the great things about Prado has been consistency among all there shops, particularly with respect to how the coffee drinks are prepared. Today, their high service standards failed and the barista made no attempt to recover. I ordered a flat white and he misjudged the amount of milk required resulting in a glass that was 2/3 full. When asked to add more milk he simply turned the pitcher over resulting in one little drop. No apology, no offer to heat up more milk, nothing. It just takes one bad experience to taint all the rest.
google avatar

Terese C.

Yelp
Ordered tea & coffee and both were lukewarm. Using their restroom, you need to leave an ID to get the key. Then you go through and unlock 3 doors to get to the restroom. The keys aren't labeled, so you have to try each key! This wasn't the reason for fewer stars. The lukewarm water is the issue. It's a coffee house, the coffee and tea should be hot!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
It was a snowy morning with slush and rain. We wanted a hot coffee and tea to warm up. The coffee was old, poured from a carafe, and just warm. The pot of tea was also just warm. I don't expect old cold coffee from a place that specializes in serving coffee.
google avatar

Toni R.

Yelp
I really don't like the coffee at 49th parallel, but decided to try prado cause I work close to it. They were super nice and let me use the washroom even before I bought something, so 3 stars for service, although their bathroom reminded me of being on drugs. I bought the special they had for bread pudding and coffee. Overpriced and both tasted like absolute arse. I don't understand why people like this coffee! It either tastes too raw or too burnt.
google avatar

Max L.

Yelp
My cup was dirty. The person behind the counter dryly apologized. Next I learned you have to give them your ID to get a washroom key. Sorry, this is not how customer service works. Won't be back.
google avatar

Johnny L.

Yelp
One of the best coffee shops/cafes we found here in Vancouver. We came here twice! Really cute, cozy space. Great selection of beverages and food!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Could be a little bigger, but everything is spot on. They have some great selections, and the service is fast and friendly - and a member of staff corrected me when I referred to something incorrectly in a kind way, which I absolutely appreciated. Really great vibes and atmosphere. Great space for computer and tablet usage too, would definitely recommend as a place to stop by if you need some quality time with your laptop/tablet.

Yelp
I was here after a few days that it was open for. I work around the neighborhood so it's easy for me to come by through there is a lot of coffee shops around here that are kinda the same. This coffee shop serves 49th parallel coffee beans which is something I like because it's nice and smooth for my liking. Though I have to say 2 blocks down there is another coffee shop that serves the same beans. I walked in during the middle of the day and there were a lot of people in there. Not sure if it's because it's fairly new and everyone is here to try it out. I love how their layout of the place. Their big glass windows make the place look bigger and there is not place to hide in there. Which is good considering it's really close to downtown east side. You don't want homeless people trying to sleep in there. I ordered a vanilla latte and a chocolate cake (a little too dense for me and nothing really special about it. it's got some sprinkles on top if you ask me). Their vanilla syrup is in a squeezy bottle instead of a bottle that you can pump out. So, i feel like they are eyeballing every time they put in the vanilla. But it's all good. Mine tasted fine and I usually do extra sweet anyways. Overall, nothing really special about this place. Came here only because it's new and that they served 49th parallel coffee. Asides from that I would have gone to another coffee shop. I'm not even sure if they even make their bake goods in house cause their back looks pretty small.

John G.

Yelp
Went in for poached eggs ...don,t have anymore .....too bad ! Orders coffee instead.... all the cream and sugar is behind the counter now. I,am 69 years of age I don,t want or NEED someone to add whatever to my drink Bye _ Bye.....from me....
google avatar

Alex V.

Yelp
I wanted to give it 5 stars, but just can't. It's good, but not excellent. Coffey is really good. Sandwich was good. Waffle was ok. Good internet and hipster vide.
google avatar

Annie C.

Yelp
I've tried out a bunch of cafes and I must say, Prado's vanilla latte was hands down my favourite. I believe they use real vanilla beans as I notice them in my coffee and I think that makes a huge difference! They had an assortment of baked goods (including liege-style waffles!!) and I believe they serve some food here as well. It's a great place to people watch, grab coffee with a friend, or have some me time and be productive (however, I only noticed outlets towards the back of the cafe!) I love the beautiful colour of the cups and the staff were friendly. I'll definitely be back. Verdict: Service: 4.5/5 Drink: 5/5 Would I return: definitely!

Yelp
Prado Cafe has expanded their operations from the original Commercial Drive shop to a brand new, second location inside the new Argyll Building in Gastown. The new cafe serves the same, well-known 49th Parallel coffee beans in those trademark blue cups. As for the coffee, their cafe mocha had a nice, not too sweet coffee and chocolate balance, while the macchiato was well-brewed, strong, and crisp. The interior lets in so much natural light with floor to ceiling windows all around its corner locale. Paired with their coffee is a fresh menu and selection of comforting sandwiches. My highlight was the delicious grilled cheese (on sourdough bread with medium-aged cheddar, fresh mozzarella, asiago, and Romano cheese) in all its cheesy glory. The prosciutto sandwich (also on sourdough with manchego cheese, tomato, caramelized onion jam, and arugula) was quite tasty and comforting. The Lana (on cranberry bread wit brie, honey caraway butter, pear, and arugula) was another tasty effort but a little too much for my tastes. Prado's new location is already bustling and full of coffee seekers with its warm, inviting atmosphere. It's already a hot spot for cafe goers.
google avatar

Yutaka T.

Yelp
A solid 4. They serve coffee and espresso based drinks using 49th Parallel beans. Their beans are a bit dark for my liking. I prefer lighter roasts such as the ones served at Matchstick, Luke's General Store, or Revolver. The space is clean and open with a bit of a hipster vibe. Staff/baristas were friendly and skilled (excellent latte pour).
google avatar

Joel P.

Yelp
I've driven past this place now for a couple of years and finally pulled and in and empty parking spot and came in. Friendly people. Coffee from 49th Parallel so it has that dry-ish taste to it. Not my fave per say but OK. Prada breakfast (mashed avocado on toast, with arugula and a single poached egg - delicious. And a gluten-free Triple berry muffin to finish things off - what can anyone say about gluten-free, right? But if I'm going to have a gluten-free muffin this actually was pretty good! And just out of the oven so slightly warm and reasonably moist. I'll be back...
google avatar

Teition S.

Yelp
Great place, though very standard. I come to expect more from cafés to not just be cookie cutter. We get it, wood is in, espresso machines are necessary, and so are delicious pastries and baking, but make some magic happen! Staff are friendly and smiling. Pumpkin bread is something you'll want to go back for more. But the bench will leave you feeling either hunched or uncomfortable. Expect a pleasant hum of city kids Skyping with foreign lovers and/or having awkward business conversations on their telephones. It's on a busy city corner, so people watching is heaven.
