23 Places to Relive the Cold War

"Behind an unassuming graffitied wall is an old Soviet bunker which today evokes the paranoia and violence of the Cold War years. A civilian bunker lies buried five stories beneath Prague’s decrepit Parukarka hill, a product of the fear of nuclear armageddon that penetrated the masses during the Cold War. Though both sides of the Iron curtain became obsessed with preparing for the possibility of a nuclear war, such bunkers were constructed with more frequency in the Eastern Bloc, as communist economies fully focused their resources on defense and army structures. This bunker was not designed to house its inhabitants for decades, or even for years. Studies at the time found that there were many psychological risks associated with keeping people within the bunkers for extended periods of time, such as suicide and mass panic. So instead, the civilian bunker in Parukarka park was meant to save civilians from immediate death in face of nuclear explosions, and the idea was that they would evacuate to the countryside soon thereafter. Today, you can explore the remnants of Soviet era paranoia on a two-hour-long guided tour, which takes you through some of the communist spots in Prague’s Old Town and ends in the nuclear bunker. The museum within the bunker serves as a snapshot of Soviet life, and in addition to the requisite dozens of gas masks, contains books, newspapers and photographs from the time." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We had such an excellent time with our guide Maxim! He was energetic, informative, and spoke impeccable English. The tour itself was very interesting, with the first part taking place throughout the city as Maxim explained the significance of various sites and buildings in the city. Afterwards we took the tram to the bunker, which was simply amazing to experience. There is a significant amount of Soviet era displays and equipment to see, and you can even handle some period accurate weapons and compare them. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Very nice, great experience. Knowledgeable and committed guide. Excellent picture opportunities. Being an umbrella if it's going to rain. There is a bit of walking and public transport involved. If you have trouble walking up and down stairs then I suggest another tour.

The tour lasts about 2.5 hours with a lot of walking. The Cold War-era nuclear bunker was fascinating, with displays of gas masks, hazmat suits, and various equipment. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable, providing great insights into history and life during that time. Recommended for anyone interested in historical tours!

Having grown up during the Cold War, it was definitely fascinating to see what the "other side" believed and experienced. Sobering to think of the reality of the numbers, and the requirements for possible survival, had the unthinkable actually happened. Pawel was well-informed, and i appreciated the "recent" history offered at the beginning - really rather emotional, tbqh, seeing the photos from the Velvet Revolution and the Prague Spring. And mind-blowing, when later we walked to the top of the hill where Stalin's monument used to sit. My teenager and i enjoyed the experience. The neat freak in me wanted to dust the bunker exhibits, tho.

Lada gave us an absolutely brilliant tour today. He gave a very clear and informative insight into what life had been like under Communist rule. This was made even more compelling by the fact that he himself had directly experienced it and he was able to give many personal examples. The nuclear bunker was an added highlight. Strongly recommend, this is a ‘must do’ for visitors to Prague.
