On the Grid : Jewish Quarter

"The urban buzz is especially strong in downtown Pest’s District VII, home of the now-world-famous "ruin pub" along with offbeat design stores, specialty street food, and modern-art galleries – but this area is also revered as Budapest’s historic Jewish Quarter, featuring Europe’s biggest synagogue." - Hyperakt

My Suggested 4 Day Prague Itinerary for 2025

"Between the Old Town Square and the Vltava, the Jewish Quarter contains six synagogues, a Jewish Ceremonial Hall and the Old Jewish Cemetery; Hitler spared the area to turn it into a museum, and today the museums, synagogues and cemetery honor the history of what was once one of Europe’s largest Jewish communities." - Matthew Kepnes

So much history here, but you have to pay to enter most if not all the places and buildings. You must take a guided tour to hear about the history, the suffering, the wise kings updating the area to become what it is today. As well as how they used to stack graves one on top of another until it’s 7 deep?

Amazing history, well worth spending a day to see the different synagogues, the cemetery and try some Koshet food at King Solomon Cafe!

Incredible history here. The Jewish quarter with hardly anything left , all destroyed and rebuilt. Such a painful history for the Jewish people world wide but again specially here. Over 3000 killed in a day and of 150 settlements of Jews all but 9 devastated and destroyed by the Nazis. How sad the way Jews have been persecuted for over 2000 years. Absolutely worth a visit and a little history lesson.

Not all that much to see other than designer fashion shops like Gucci, Chanel etc and some synagogues. Won't take much time to tour.

Whilst in Prague we visited the Jewish Quarter which took in several synagogues and the Jewish Cemetery,it was a very moving experience but, also educational, the beautiful interiors of the synagogues all had a story to tell, some joyful but, others told of the history of the Holocaust which was harrowing to listen to and to see the many names on the internal walls and the number of tombstones in the cemetery,we saw people there that couldn't hold back tears, this was a history lesson that god willing shall never be repeated, no matter your beliefs you must visit this area when in Prague.

✡️The Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague is a must-see for anyone interested in Jewish history and culture. It is the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe, and it is home to over 12,000 graves. The cemetery is also the final resting place of many famous Jews, including the philosopher Franz Kafka. The Old Jewish Cemetery is a beautiful and peaceful place. The gravestones are covered in moss and lichen, and the trees are tall and majestic. The cemetery is a reminder of the long and rich history of the Jewish people in Prague.
