15 Unique Things to Do in Prague (Updated 2025)

"Nicknamed the “Elevator of Death,” this doorless, continuously revolving lift at Prague City Hall doesn’t stop at floors and requires you to hop in and out carefully; I enjoyed the slow, looping ride and would warn first-timers to be cautious — if you miss a top floor, the lift simply loops back around." - Matthew Kepnes

My Suggested 4 Day Prague Itinerary for 2025

"Nicknamed the “Elevator of Death,” the Paternoster is a doorless, continuously moving lift that doesn’t stop at floors; the most easily accessible example is in Prague City Hall and it’s free to try." - Matthew Kepnes

There's no access to the paternoster lift without a tour due to it being overrun by tourists, and the interior doors are locked, for employees only. You can only look at the pretty art deco lobby. Find tour info on the official website (closed through Aug 2025 for construction).

An important piece of Art Nouveau architecture dating back to 1908-1911. Since 1945, it has been the seat of the Prague City Hall and Prague’s Mayor. The Grand Hall is the venue for Prague council meetings, seminars, conferences, and gala events. Exhibitions are occasionally held here. The building is one of the most attractive camera lens targets for visitors to the city.

This building has the most interesting elevator I have ever seen, the Paternoster lift. Unfortunately, when I popped by to try it out, it was under repair, and I couldn't see it in action nor take a ride in it. Hope i can do so in future visits.

This is a building owned by the government. This place does not offer free of charge toilet use/restroom use. Therefore it is not recommended to visit in looking for wash rooms.

Beautiful building. The paternoster lift inside is a must see! Through the main entrance doors and take either the corridor to the left or right and walk straight through to the other end of the building where you will see the lift. You must ride a full loop on the lift. It was not overcrowed with tourists, in fact we were the only people there. Great experience and well worth the visit!.

Google
City Hall Paternoster Lift. Considering it’s very rare lift still exists today, it is indeed a fun ride of this lift from Ground to 4th floor and you should gone over the top and around the bottom (full cycle) to experience this lift. A must experience lift without pay a single cent.

City Hall Paternoster Lift. First thing to note is that the lift is inside the City Hall building, as such it is only accessible after 10:00 Monday to Friday. If you go through the huge doors on the front of the building head to either the left or right to get to the other end of the building where the lift is. As this is the City Hall it feels very strange wandering through unchallenged, if feels like you should be here. That said we did nod to a couple of office workers who were probably thinking ‘odd tourists’. You can go through the door on the end of the building near the lift but this isn’t as much fun. From the ground floor it goes up 4 floors but there are none below... that said you can stay on the lift after it passes the last stop... If you dare... No, it’s fine really and you really can’t say you’ve ridden a Paternoster unless you’ve gone over the top and around the bottom.
