I know many locals consider this place "high end," which is entirely correct if one is used to purchasing mass-produced goods at mass-merchandising prices. However...
Prairie Edge doesn't offer goods of that ilk. Instead the buyers for the store are on the lookout for the different and unusual, and as a result the displays are stocked with items that can't be found elsewhere in the area. (Fact: Prairie Edge was the first retailer in Rapid City to offer TY Beanie Babies.)
The Fine Art Gallery in noteworthy in that the range of mediums on display is impressive - chalk, oil, pastel, watercolor, paper sculpture, glass pieces - and I am ever amazed by the diversity in the gallery.
The bookstore upstairs - one of Rapid's finest hidden treasures; don't miss it.
The Native American gallery is always interesting. I am particularly fond of the clothing items as well as the fine jewelry pieces...not to mention the flutes and coup sticks and buffalo robes and...!
The true joy in visiting the store lies not in the beautiful displays or the interesting merchandise but rather in its staff. Michael, who works in the Sioux Trading Post (where to go for hides and sinew and beads and bells), is amazing. A consummate artist, he is also a walking bead reference library - if it's a bead fact, he knows it, and he's not afraid to pass the information along to anyone who asks. I simply can't say enough wonderful things about this friendly and knowledgeable man!
If not for the goods or people, go at least for a walk through an impeccably restored building, complete with original tin patches on the floor and burn marks, where once upon a time, saloon patrons would flick their cigar and cigarette butts at the spittoons...and miss.
Take some advice from a local who loves it and do not miss the opportunity to take in the experience that is Prairie Edge.
