Yelp
We reserved about a month in advance, after reading great reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor. To be honest, it was because we couldn't quite afford a 3-course meal at a Michelin star restaurant in Paris, so we chose this bistro instead, which sounded promising.
This is what we ordered:
Appetizers:
- smoked foie gras with eel: presentation was underwhelming (as foreshadowing to the rest of our meal, I suppose). It was just a slab of foie gras on a plate, with a piece of small eel in the centre. It looked like a complement to the bread, instead of an appetizer. I'm sure there was much technique involved in smoking the foie gras, but it just didn't blow my mind away. The experience was in fact similar to eating some canned foie gras I bought from Carrefour a few days ago.
- King crab with fava beans and tomatoes (the special). The flavors were clean and fresh, and you could taste each ingredient, only because there was no other seasoning on the plate. The crab was cooked well, but I'm not sure if the beans came from a can or not, because it wasn't "transformed" as an ingredient. It literally could have been beans from a can, for all I know.
Mains:
- rabbit with olives and artichoke: rabbit was chewy and bland, as was the dish in general. I can't say much with this dish. It was literally pieces of rabbit, olives, and artichoke without any hint of seasoning, spice, or herbs.
- seabass with eggplants and tomatoes: dish is poorly conceptualized in general, I'm sorry. The texture of the seabass is similar to the texture of the eggplant, which is also similar to the texture of the diced tomato... so why serve them together, on a plate, without any other elements? This too was bland and could use some seasoning.
Dessert:
- raspberry tart with granny smith apples and whipped cream: this one just killed me, really. You could easily Google any recipe for "raspberry tart", follow its instructions precisely, and end up with a better product than what we got. Our "tart" was really a rectangular piece of shortbread/butter cracker-thing with imperceptibly thin slices of what I guessed was Granny smith apples, with raspberries, and whipped cream (not flavoured with vanilla, which was the least they could've done).
- mille feuille: equally disappointing. You could walk down to any patisserie on the block and get a better mille feuille. The layers of puff pastry were of uneven thickness, it was burnt/blackened on the top layer. The cream was thin pastry cream. What saved this was the fact that it had black specks in it, which meant at least there was some vanilla beans used. Thank you. Then there was these awkward small pieces of peach hiding in there. I think it was canned. I couldn't tell.
For anyone thinking of coming here as a substitute to a Michelin star restaurant, don't bother. This was the only meal we decided to "splurge" on in Paris, and it just left us disappointed and feeling a bit deceived. Based on the dishes we ordered, the cooking is mediocre and the food is really simple. When it says rabbit, you just get cooked rabbit. It hasn't been transformed.
