Villa Stamos||||We had a fantastic two-week covid getaway at this isolated, simple (not luxury) but comfortable villa. The owner - Stematos - lives away but has other properties in nearby Kattavia and seemed keen to ensure that were we comfortable. This is super-secluded, and we hardly saw anyone - surrounded by scrubland and reached by a long driveway (car essential) but you can walk to a quiet sand/pebble beach shared with the nearby very private German resort and a very reasonably priced, friendly watersports and boat rental company. Note the roads are harsh and stoney (we had a puncture) but stony part is not too long and youbhave to expect that in Greece. Also if you are willing to go through a 25 min cross country, slightly-scary off road drive - there is the most amazing deserted huge, pure sand beach and clean, shallow, calm water - amazing for middle of August.||The villa has a large, east facing undercover terrace with two dining tables with a shallow but pleasing sea view (as not high up) and surrounding scrub with coppice. There is a handful of distant villas. However view is somewhat spoilt by lots of telephone/electricity poles which are lit up up night and spoil the incredibly clear starry skies. The terrace protects from the severe south Rhodes winds that blows west to east but this is the better side of the island as seas are calm here compared with being pretty ferocious on the west side. We think the south is largely undeveloped due to this but this is a blessing - as it blows away the humidity and mostly insect free- making it pleasant to sit out all day. The best feature - a clean pool (40m2 plus something like 2.5m deep) and pool shower. The villa has two buildings - main building with open kitchen (large fridge freezer, kettle, microwave and toastie maker plenty of cooking accessories but no dishwasher) - and large lounge fireplace with sliding door to terrace. In the back two bedrooms (a double room plus a raised, giant 4-person bed - ideal for children) and a bathroom. Each room has its own aircon. The second, adjoining building - the studio - with own front door with a small bedroom, cooker and fridge and an outside shower / toilet but it also has own aircon. There is a giant sheltered BBQ. You do pay for the quietness and seclusion by having to drive everywhere for miles - nearest restaurant is the Plimiri Fish restaurant down on the quiet harbour which has drinks and fantastic fish but that is it. There is a nearby 5 star Thalassa hotel open to public for crowded poolside experience. Drive to Lachania for Villa Plantinos - beautiful and friendly Greek village setting taverner - (apparently best example on whole island) but dont bother with the rude, tiny ripoff grocery store. Instead head to Kattavia which is 15 mins away and has about 5 restaurants but it has two small grocers but goto the the one next to Penelope’s which sold everything and the kind owners would also give you stuff for free. Nearby - Prasonisi has an amazing beach that cuts through the bottom of the island with a surfer vibe and lots of surf based activities due to the severe winds. it also has the very good Lighthouse restaurant and a small supermarket. . Otherwise to get some urban noise - you need to drive the pleasant coastal route north to Gennadi and beyond to find bigger supermarkets bars and restaurants - 30 mins away. Rodos’s impressive harbour and walled city centre) in the north is 1.5 hours away along with the airport to get an bit of Euro city feeling.
