Mark Peel’s Seafood Spot Prawn Closes Downtown After Five Good Years - Eater LA

"Grand Central Market’s seafood-focused Prawn has closed permanently, ending a five-year run for the corner stand. The restaurant first came to life in 2017 as a fast-casual case study, at the time called Bombo, that served clam chowder, fresh-steamed seafood options, and more, backed by founder and chef Mark Peel of Campanile fame. Peel ran the restaurant for years, even briefly expanding to a second location in Old Pasadena. The pandemic put a damper on crowds at Downtown LA’s historic Grand Central Market, though, and in June 2021 the venerable Peel suddenly died at 66 after a brief battle with cancer. More recently, the restaurant was said to be run by a longtime manager at Prawn." - Farley Elliott

Simply delicious, I came here during happy hour, from 4 to 7 during weekdays. Their menu is marvelous, so many choices to choose from. I have ordered deep fried calamari, very crispy. Streamed mussels with Boston loster soup. Excellent as it is very fresh and the soup is very rich as well. Ipa draft beer is not bad. But if they can offer all kind of their beers from tap same at Ipa beer at 6 dollars, that would be perfect.

Google
Prawn was great! Fast service for being very busy/ in grand central market. We ordered an oyster and shrimp po’boy, fish and chips, and the crab and shrimp soba noodle salad. Everything was fresh and delicious and we really liked all the homemade dipping sauces as well. They also have some yummy seasonal lemonades and iced teas.

Google
Amazing seafood spot in Grand Central market. The staffs are super nice and welcoming. Good selecting of beer on tap and wines are good as well. The food was good, yummy and delicious. Their paella is delicious but a bit small in portion size. The calmari was seasoned nice love the tartare sauce. The Mac and cheese was ok nothing special but good. Definitely will be returning here when I'm in town again

Google
Service was amazing, the food was delicious had the lobster roll one with chips and the other with coleslaw. As you can see big chunks of lobster! The only reason it gets 4 for me at least was a tad bit dry. But besides that it was delicious!

Google
It is nice to spend the lazy afternoon at Grand central market. I like to sit at the bar table at Prawn Coastal. Tried the Seattle fish stew with Lobster broth. I love it, seafood are fresh and tasty soaked with the lovely broth... although it is more like a winter dish to me😆But I truly enjoy it

Google
Looks and smells like an upscale place, nice menu. But the food, I had the sandwiches, are completely and utterly messy...falling apart more on the plate then into your mouth, can't even grip the sandwich as it sits on top of mayo coated coleslaw. *Messy *Difficult to eat. *I'd go to Carl's Jr if I wanted that. *Not worth $30for lunch. *Ginger lemonade was delicious though.

Google
Probably the WORST lobster roll I’ve had in my entire life. The bread was stale, the lobster was dry and tasted like cardboard. The coleslaw also was tasteless- beyond belief that this place has positive reviews. Maybe the no line at all should have been telling. BUYER BEWARE - WORST 30 DOLLARS EVER SPENT ON FOOD.

Google
Had the crab and shrimp soba noodle salad, it was delicious, fresh and light on the tummy. The combination of their sauce, fresh and crunchy vegetables with savory seafood it was a great lunch choice. Will definitely visit again when I am in LA. Service was great and quick😊

Yelp
Hands down the best lobster roll in town. I ordered a warm lobster roll with extra lobster and the fried jumbo shrimp. The juicy lobster claw and tail in a soft buttery roll cooked to perfection is to die for. I can't get enough. The fried jumbo shrimp were delicious as well. The staff were friendly and very attentive.

Yelp
First time having Broad Street and I got the Lobster Roll with added Uni. It was fantastic! The bread was toasted perfectly, lots of lobster that was so flavorful and fresh, and the uni was a great touch to add a bit of extra buttery sweetness! The service was very great and the wait wasn't too long considering how busy it was. Highly recommend coming here if you're at the market. Will definitely be back!

Angeleah B.

Yelp
I dinned in today. The food was taste and fresh I had the lobster roll and my girlfriend had the classic burger. The service was quick and friendly, I inquired about a beer and they immediately offered a taste. By far the cleanest business in the market. Would return for the service and cleanliness alone.

Yelp
We tried the lobster rolls at Broad Street Oyster Company, and they were really enjoyable. The rolls had a generous amount of lobster, which was fresh and tender. The buttery flavor made it feel rich and satisfying, though it was a bit on the heavier side. Overall, the lobster rolls were a solid choice if you're in the mood for something indulgent, though a bit pricey. Definitely worth trying if you're craving seafood.
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Got the $25 lobster roll and honestly a little disappointed. It was way smaller than I expected and a bit bland. The buns were good tho. Service was fine. It's located inside the market so it's a lively spot with plenty of seating. Nice vibes overall
google avatar

Yelp
The warm butter, the perfectly toasted bread, the finely sliced chives!!? This lobster roll lives up to my expectations as we all know they can tend to be a bit pricey but man was it worth it. I hope to try other items from the menu but will have trouble passing up on the mouthgasm that this lobster roll provides. I'm ever so curious about the uni and caviar add on so I'm definitely going for it next time!

Yelp
One of the many places to dine in at the Grand Central Market Broad Street Oyster Co offers a seafood option for those who aren't feeling anything else at the market. Only been a few times but the lobster roll is on point. Nice amount of lobster stuffed into a buttered roll. The fries are great to be honest. I wasn't expecting them to be good. Aioli sauce that comes with it goes great with lobster roll or the fries. Little pricey. But expected it's seafood. Depending on the time of day there may be a wait. Counter seating available if you don't want to look for seating elsewhere in the market. Nice place to take care of your seafood fix.

Yelp
My family and I took a stroll around Grand Central Market and found Broad Street Oyster. I know they have store locations elsewhere so I was surprised that there was one inside the Market. My mom and I split the warm lobster roll ($25) and the French fries ($6). Unfortunately they forgot to add on the French fries with the order, so we had to eat the roll first, and the French fries later. The roll was small, which I guess is somewhat understandable for the cheaper price (some rolls go as much as $40). I found it a bit bland and not flavorful. It's one thing to have it be small, but having it bland was unfortunate. The French fries was nice and crispy, and right out of the frier. My favorite lobster roll in the LA area continues to be at Connie and Ted's - more pricey but worth the trip & money for a great roll.

Yelp
Food: Got 2 lobster rolls: 1 warm with butter, 1 chilled with mayo. Both come with chives on top and a side of lemon slice. My first time trying lobster rolls and honestly they were pretty good. Lots of lobster meat on a warm, buttery, toasted roll. I liked the chilled with mayo one a little more than the warm one. However these are a little pricy. Recommend to try if you're close in the area and you've been wanting to try lobster rolls for a while, which was the situation I was in. Service: Person taking my order was pretty chill and the food came out at a reasonable time, even though it was pretty busy because of the weekend. Place is in Grand Central Market in LA. It's like a very large and higher quality indoor food court. Very lively and busy. There are parking structures nearby but they get filled fast, especially on weekends. Seating inside can be hard to find too. There's also some non-food related vendors downstairs that I recommend checking out.

Yelp
I wish I got a photo of the lobster roll. Let me tell you, I've tried lobster rolls in the past and just thought they're over rated and just eh, so when my bf got one from here and asked me to taste it I almost said no. However I took the chance and WOW!!!! I cannot even describe in words how perfect this lobster roll was. The bread roll was soft and perfect, and the inside lobster pieces were generous chunks of delicious meat. I CANNOT wait to go back just for this!!!!

Yelp
Broad Street Oyster Co. is serving some of the best seafood I've ever had at the Grand Central Market. Their world famous lobster roll comes with huge chunks of lobster meat on a buttery brioche bun The soft shell crab sando is really unique! It comes with a delicious Fresno aioli that gives it so much flavor And don't forget to try their new spicy strawberry margarita! Service was on point as well. It was my first time there, so I appreciate the staff giving me a rundown of their menu and their recommendations. Definitely check them out when you're in the area!!
google avatar

Angelene C.

Yelp
On a Saturday the line was 4-5 people ahead of us. I had my brother order it while I looked for a table. Ordered the world-famous lobster roll to try! It was really good, but a little pricey for $25 considering it was small. But the lobster pieces and quality were great + the bread was delicious. I would definitely try this place if you happen to find yourself here, but only reorder if I was craving.

Carissa S.

Yelp
The lobster roll with French fries was amazing!! this place is a must. The lobster was so buttery, warm, and fresh
google avatar

Kayle B.

Yelp
I had the lobster roll at Smorgasbord LA and was really impressed. The roll was buttery and the lobster was generous and really high quality. Staff were nice and they had a speedy operation. Definitely would try them again at a pop-up or at their Grand Central Market location.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok hear me out I know $25 is a lot but the warm lobster roll is soooo worth it! It's the best one I've tried in the area we did the one with butter and it was so good, and they put a good amount of lobster in it. We ordered and our food came out super quick too, 5 min at most. They have a little seating area by the bar but we always head over to golden road (other end of grand central) and there's plenty of seating there!
google avatar

Farrah S.

Yelp
Let me just start with I LOVE this place! I have been going to Broadstreet since 2019! I have been to almost every location of theirs, Malibu, smorgasbord LA, Santa Barbara and I even ran into the owner with my husband on the way to Miami... and guess what we went there as well for the Miami Smorgasbord. The service has always been top notch, and incredibly welcoming every time, to the point that my best friend and I always joke around about working there in the summer. I love love love their decor at every location it give it a beautiful ambiance and make you feel like your in a 70s beach movie. The food gets me going every time. I could eat hundreds of lobster rolls (my favorite are the warm ones). When I'm feeling adventurous the fresh Uni hits the spot, and you can never go wrong with a seafood tower. Truly a pleasure every single visit! No matter the location

Yelp
This location is located inside Grand Central Market. It provides a couple bar seats, but if you come in a group you'll probably need to find nearby table seating which tends to be crowded on both weekends and weekdays. They show the uni and oysters on ice through the glass. We got the New England clam chowder and the lobster roll to share. The clam chowder includes Nueske's bacon and tastes a little different than the normal creamy New England clam chowder I'm used to. It's not as creamy but still tasty all the same, but kind of peppery. The bacon is cubed and chewy and the potatoes are cubed in small pieces. The lobster roll was definitely small for the price. The roll was soft and buttery and the lobster wasn't fishy. I probably wouldn't pay $25 for it again.
google avatar

Jonathan T.

Yelp
The added nueske bacon in the clam chowder gives a surprising snomkey spicy twist to an og banger. They also don't mess around with giving oyster crackers instead of that usual saltine squares. 4.5/5 The lobster roll looking at me some typa way, I didn't want to bite it because it looked perfect already.. but when I did, lobster was fresh bread with garlicy, I would say the bun was a little more thick than I wanted in the bite. 4/5

Yelp
Solid addition to Grand Central Market in DTLA. The Lobster Roll with Butter and a Live Sea Urchin from Santa Barbara makes for a great lunchtime.

Mylan D.

Yelp
So excited to try this place and was first in line when they opened up! I've heard great things about this place and was excited that it was in the grand central station. I ordered their lobster roll and wish there was more butter on the bread and the lobster itself. It was a bit dry and was thankful I had the clam chowder to help swallow it down. The best lobster roll is oddly enough in Salt Lake City, UT and I still haven't found a decent one in CA yet. I'm still looking though! The clam chowder was a bit watery, but it was pretty good. The clam to veggie ratio is good and I felt like I had a clam in each spoonful.

Yelp
Helpful greeter Quick service The best Lobster roll I have had this year. Will be back again.

Yelp
Very nice warm lobster roll with butter! Had to get the extra lobster meat... our party had the burger and oysters Rockefeller and a Hazy IPA.

Yelp
I had the Lobster Roll at Broad Street Oyster Company in Grand Central Market, and it was absolutely amazing! The flavors were perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice and freshness. Each bite was a burst of deliciousness, and the quality of the seafood was top-notch. The presentation was also beautiful, making it as pleasing to the eyes as it was to the taste buds. Highly recommend trying the Lava Roll if you're at Grand Central Market--you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Hi paid a visit in Malibu location and really really love their lobster roll and fries! I was very excited about visits in DTLA also the food court , this restaurant is located is very famous and bustling place. It set up like a emporio atmosphere, busy packed and vivid all over the food court! Wow but then nothing was interesting at all, usually all Mexican taco places some lame Korean Japanese and Chinese spots and a couple of pizzas and pasta place! Looked all the same lame Thus this lobster roll place is only the unique place in the court! But then everything looked the same and taste same as Malibu, however it came to me not that scrumptious at all! Maybe because of the service and the ambiance inside of the court?! Will never go back again here.... But still you are super craving decent lobster roll, this would be the first place to visit or in Ktown there is awesome one too- royal lobster from Hawaii!
google avatar

Janice L.

Yelp
I've been to the original Broad Street Oyster in Malibu so I was excited to check out their new location at Grand Central Market. We ordered the fried clams and also their live sea urchin. The fried clams were delicious and had a very light, well seasoned batter. It wasn't too heavy or too greasy but it paired perfectly with the clams and tarter sauce. My friend also tried uni for the first time and thought it was smooth and creamy and really enjoyed it as well. We wanted to order fresh raw oysters but they only said it was available in their seafood tower (vs ala carte). I've had their other items like the fish tacos and their lobster roll and you can't go wrong with either of them!
google avatar

Arvin P.

Yelp
First time at the Grand Central Market and decided to get shrimp cocktail, a lobster roll, and a beer. This place was busy! The food was excellent though and the staff were very friendly. There's a counter you can eat at next to where you order or you can sit at any of the nearby tables.
google avatar

Helene D.

Yelp
BEST OF BEST lobster roll we've ever had! The bread warm with a touch of crunch, the butter made the lobster very flavorful. We've tried other lobster rolls and it's had that smell/taste of ocean water but this roll didn't! Came during afternoon rush but staff was super nice and we watched them make our food with delicacy. Will be back soon and each of us will have to order our own Lobster roll lol!
google avatar

Maruko X.

Yelp
Ambiance: it's located in grand central market, near the boardway entrance Service: very fast and friendly, served food promptly Food: simple menu with emphasis on seafood Lobster Roll - *** warm with butter, overcooked lobster meat, stingy portion Clam Chowder - *** New England style with nueske's bacon, overly dosed acidity Price: overpriced for the quality, not worth $35+ per order
google avatar

Ani G.

Yelp
Loved the lobster roll. Bread was crispy well toasted and lobster was legit. Would love to try other food from their menu
google avatar

Yvette S.

Yelp
Tasty for sure! I was not let down by their famous lobster roll. The bread is nice and soft and buttery; the lobster is steamed just perfectly, and is cut into pretty big chunks. The presentation of the roll is also nice. Only downside is the coleslaw that I ordered had way too much cream/mayo, and I def wouldn't order again. For these two items my total was ~$36. Definitely not cheap, but I promise the quality is there. Check them out for their lobster rolls (order it with melted butter!). If you are a lobster lover, you will not be disappointed (well, your pockets might).
google avatar

Anthony N.

Yelp
What was known as a mobile raw bar, this establishment opened it's door on Malibu back in 2019. With a total of 5 brick and motor stores opening in LA and OC, they plan on opening there next location in San Francisco. An array of deep sea ocean critters such as lobsters, raw oysters, and sea urchins, shrimp and fish all under a small roof. They did all the diving and fishing so all we have to do is grubbing and slurpping! So here me out, I love uni as much as the next fat guy, but when you have a vendor that sells Santa Barbara uni within reach, you go for them. We got an order of 2 fresh Santa Barbara sea urchins cleaned and prep for us. For $26 a piece, you're really paying for the quality of the product but I still think it's a bit of a pricey guilty pleasure. The uni tasted really fresh and was good, but for the price, I'd rather prefer a full entree meal. For those who never had uni, it's a very rich and creamy, delightful snack. The texture is like a wet udon noodle, but the taste is subtly sweet and briney like the sea; there are however bad uni's out there which would forever leave a bad impression in your mouth so if you ever decide to try it raw, make sure it's from a reliable vendor. The smell of the good sea urchin should smell like the sea and not stinky like fishy pee. The flesh of the uni should be bright and vibrant. Just like the one in the picture. It can be acquired taste, so don't invest $26 in something that you think you might hate. Bring a friend like me to eat what you don't eat!
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
Asked for water: "we don't have any water" , asked for the caddy with the vinegar and ketchup bottle: you're not sitting at the bar, we can't give you one, here are some (annoyingly tiny) packets of vinegar and 2 tiny Tabasco's. $27 worth of fried oysters were served in janky take-away aluminum foil tray, and a $13 bowl of soup was served in a generic paper pint cup probably from Canton Foods wholesale. The experience and service are so underwhelming and subpar for a $100+ meal, yet mgmt has the gall to set 18% as the default tip on the POS. The food was fine, but avoid this location at all cost. GCM is still great for the carnitas, I just don't want to eat a $25 lobster roll from a flimsy take-away foil tray.
google avatar

Stewart L.

Yelp
This stall in Grand Central Market used to house famed chef Mark Peel's Prawn Coastal before it closed due to his untimely death. Broad Street apparently has a well-regarded location in Malibu; I've only been to the DTLA location a few times. I've ordered the fried clams (with bellies), the lobster roll both warm with butter and chilled with mayo, the clam chowder and the Old Bay potato chips. The clams were fine, served a la carte; Connie and Ted's are better. The potato chips had great flavour but were not super crisp. I liked both lobster rolls but slightly prefer the chilled version. The clam chowder was okay, very thick with bacon and potatoes. No celery and a bit of an off-putting grey colour. Service is meh. You can preorder, which many folks do. Probably one of the pricier places in the Market.
google avatar

Cristina B.

Yelp
The options are endless at grand central market and everything I've ever tried there has been absolutely delicious! We opted for a lobster roll (to start) from Broad street Oyster company. Honestly, for the price (especially) it was meh :/ it wasn't the best I've had! The lobster roll is claimed to be "world famous" so I automatically had expectations that sadly weren't met. :/ You have 2 options for the roll; warm with butter or chilled with mayo. We opted for warm with butter. The lobster was a little overcooked/dry and the size of the bun was so tiny :/. Their menu also offers other items such as uni, oysters and caviar. Overall not a bad experience! Service was good. Wait time wasn't too long. Ambiance at GCM is always so fun and lively! A great place for date night, fam night, or overall good time!

Yelp
We got the lobster roll with fries. The fries isn't a big serving but enough to where we should have ordered another one for $6. Came with a good garlic aioli. My bf really enjoyed the lobster roll. I thought it was good as well genuinely was a 4/5 experience for me. I assume maybe the lack of warm energy (zombie mode feeling) from staff/cashier is just a mix of it being so busy and hot. Don't blame them I came pretty mid day as well and the food hall is pretty hectic. $35 for this plate lobster roll + fries.
google avatar

Yelp
This review is about the Micheladas, customer service and cleanliness. This has to be in top 3 Miches I've ever had!! Makes me want to go and grab one right now while I'm writing this review and it's only 11:30 in the morning. Customer service was very good he even shared his secret Chamoy mix they use. Mix they use is pretty thick and they put enough in it to pour the rest of your tall can in and not be watered down. Stand was kept very clean and I seen them cleaning up bar area immediately after someone left. I didn't try anything else from here but we will def be back and I will def get another Miché from here and will recommend you do the same.
google avatar

Valentin S.

Yelp
Broad Street Oyster is definitely one of the standouts at Grand Central Market. We had the lobster roll, soft shell crab sandwich, fries, and clam chowder. All were delicious!!! The clam chowder especially. If it weren't for how busy the market gets with the lack of seats and having to buy a $4 glass bottles water instead of a free cup after ordering all that food, this would have received 5 stars.
google avatar

Kate K.

Yelp
I was pretty excited to grab a lobster roll before an event at the market and upgraded to include the uni topping. Unfortunately the roll was pretty disappointing. I've had a lot of lobster rolls and this one was lacking in flavor. With so much hype about this place it seems they are coasting based on brand recognition and location more than quality.
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
This Broad Street Oyster Co. is located inside of Grand Central Market. They're known for their Lobster Rolls and I've always wanted to try so my bf and I split one here. We ordered the Lobster Roll served warm with butter rather than the other option of chilled with mayo. First thing I noticed was it was very small, so I wasn't very pleased especially for the price of $25. The first few bites were actually wonderful, but as I kept eating, I lost interest in the flavor. Rating 3 stars because it was overall decent but didn't leave me super satisfied or wanting to get it again.

Yelp
My bf and I have been supporting and enjoying their food since they first opened their pop up in Malibu. So very happy to see how far they've come and to have a permanent home in LA! We finally made the trip out to this location and were very surprised at how quick the service was! We came on a Saturday around lunch. This spot is located in the Grand Central Market which is ALWAYS packed but the line had maybe 6 people ahead of me. I got in line, ordered a warm lobster roll with fries, sat at the bar and my number got called in maybe 5-10 minutes? That's INSANE. Malibu wait time is always so long! We live about 45 min out from both locations so whenever we would go to the Malibu one, we'd place a mobile order so that we would be able to pick it up as soon as we got there and it was always at least an hour+ pick up time . Crazy!! Love how quick the service was at this location and the nice lady who took my order even cleaned up the bar for us since people left their mess. It was the same delicious warm lobster roll that we were used to and I was beyond happy. It has been so long since we've visited and glad that this location is open. The bad thing about the Grand Central Market is the lack of seating. You would think there would be way more easily accessible seating for a dining hall like this but it's always so busy and crowded, you're fighting for a seat. We definitely got lucky at their bar. Looking forward to coming back and enjoying their delicious food! IG: @ammysalamii

Yelp
Grand Central Market is a 10/10. We chose fish and chips as one of our options out of 4 places. The fish and tartar sauce was very good. Well battered and stayed crispy even after taking our leftovers home. The "chips" were just regular frozen French fries thrown in the frier. This place is way over priced and was not worth what we got. It was $26 for 2 pieces of fish and barely a handful of pre cooked fries. When we asked for an extra tartar sauce we got attitude. I wanted to tell him for $26 this meal should come with unlimited tartar sauce and a freaking drink. The other places were reasonably priced and very good. This place was way too overpriced. And the michelada was bland. It was almost $40 for these two items in this picture. I wish I would have saved my funds and picked another spot. Next time!

Yelp
Their food is lit! It looks and tastes fresh! Dip for fries and sauce in the lobster bun tastes so good. I would definitely go back and recommend this to my friends and family!

Yelp
I had a hankering for seafood, and I wasn't really feeling like something big or greasy, which seemed to be mostly the case in the Grand Central Market. Originally I had wanted to get the fish or shrimp tacos, but found out that they were fried only. So I opted for the lobster roll instead. With that, I honestly wasn't expecting much, considering the West coast isn't really known for lobster. But surprisingly, it was probably one of the best lobster rolls I've had (in terms of purely taste/texture), including highly rated places like Luke's Lobster on the East coast. There was a big chuck of claw meat on the top of the roll, which was surprisingly soft and juicy. In my past experience with lobster rolls, these type of pieces can be quite rubbery. The other pieces were just as tender and juicy. The roll itself was pretty small, but there was actually more lobster meat than there was bread. Kind of the opposite of expected. It was a little pricey at $25, but kind of normal for lobster rolls lately. Price was somewhat reasonable considering the amount of lobster meat. But after adding a sparkling water and $1 tip, my total was $38! That must have been some really overpriced water. If I ever come back, I'll get the lobster roll but get a drink elsewhere.

Yelp
Do not go to this location! The one in Malibu is sooo much better. We went here today and got a lobster roll. Portion size was tiny and lobster was very mediocre. The sandwich cost $28! They also charge a "3.5% service fee" which is pretty annoying. I asked for a cup of water and they told me they only sell bottled water. I got an email afterward asking to rate my experience. So I just left the feedback above. I immediately got a reply FROM THE BUSINESS that simply had 3 clown emojis... WOW never going back to this location.

Yelp
The lobster roll was worth the price tag. Do it! The staff are friendly and the place has a great bar area.

Yelp
Delicious Lobster Roll (But Paying Extra Uni Doesn't Give Much Flavor). Better Order Lobster Roll + Extra Lobster Giving Full Satisfaction.

Yelp
We ordered up in the counter and so lucky to get the counter seats. There are also plenty of sitting in the grand central market close to this restaurant. Foods are served fast. Service friendly. Live Sea urchin fresh and taste so good. No fishy smell. Clam chowder yummy with lots of potatoes. By the time we finish the sea urchin, the lobster roll is already cold and not as tasty. Next time maybe order that separate. Parking is a bit expensive $5 for first hour.

Yelp
It was my first time having lobster bisque and it was quite good. They have a nice outdoor seating area and it's warm during a cold day. However the bowl is a little misleading since it comes like this, I was expecting a bread bowl.
