On the Grid : Prelinger Library

"On the second floor of a nondescript building sits one of San Francisco’s best secrets—the Prelinger Library, an idiosyncratic collection of image-rich historical ephemera, periodicals, maps, and books from the 19th-century to present. Opened in 2004 by Megan and Rick Prelinger, the library has no card catalog or Dewey Decimal Classifications. Instead, the stacks are arranged more like a stream of consciousness. Wanting library research to be as fun as a field trip, the ’zinester-turned-historians organized the collection as if it were a landscape for visitors to explore. The shelves begin in the Western US and end in outer space. In between, you can flip through 50 years of TV Guide magazines, old concert flyers, school textbooks from 1880-1970, and periodicals with titles like “Social Hygiene” and “Candy Manufacturers and Confectioners Journal.” Stop by on a Wednesday afternoon (they have occasional Friday/Saturday hours, too) and get lost in the library’s 30,000 bound objects, 60,000 loose sheets, and 10,000 zines." - Airbnb

Google
A special little hidden library deep into SoMa. Take a visit, and check out their books. Great vibes and good reads. As a side note, it’s a little hard to find this place. Look for a call box in a little door alcove on 8th street to get in. There’s no signage, so you just have to find the call box.

Sunday-Sounday today! 1:30 to 4 PM. Come for the books. Stay for the sound!

a great little gem. to get in, scroll to "prelinger library" and press call on the door-side intercom system. it contains that SF charm, in it's people and content! the vibe is chill, like a uni archive where only cool kids go to, or even know about. Very hospitable, kind, supportive. the archive is incredibly organized, now with a map! the content is somewhere between what you'd expect at an anarchist bookstore and a mix of various SF residents' private collections. The local neighborhood books had great photos to see your nabe in the past, and it's history. There's was an old gem of a story about a Chinese person immigrating to SF, full of old illustrations and older writing intended for the American layman of a past-time. Surely endless gems of books over there, some very old. just go for it.

What an amazing hidden treasure! The overall vibe and experience of the Prelinger Library is just nice and comfortable. Charlie (one of the people that works there) explained it's purpose and goal so well, I fell in love with the place. I will definitely go again when I'm back in San Francisco, it was my favorite place that I visited :)!!!

I love this library! Visited yesterday on a field trip for an anthropology grad class at CIIS. Adrienne, the volunteer who showed us around was much more than a volunteer-she was freaking amazing. Her research and knowledge was impressive. She showed us around, helped us with our research and pulled fantastic references, one being an Ebony magazine from 1965 with articles written by James Baldwin and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I recommend going-and plan on staying awhile.

They are often open on days other than Wednesday, which is their typical day—visit their website for the most up to date schedule. I was entertained by the librarian action figures encased in plastic near the front of the stacks (I suspect that the Prelinger librarians are all actually be superheroes themselves!).

This hidden gem of a library is totally worth a visit! The people are super friendly and the space is very unique. They even have some free books from time to time! Just sign the guest book and enjoy.

Yelp
I spent maybe 2 hours exploring, and a large part of that was digging through a box with hundreds of old punk flyers and zines from the late 70s/early 80s. They also have most issues of Punk Planet, which started in 1994, in their music/punk section. I could spend hours just reading those. I also found a book that spent almost 200 pages exploring why people eat dirt. Get lost in this place and just have fun exploring!

Yelp
Amazing independent library. They have such a great span of material in such a small space. Great image resource where you can copy and use anything in the whole space without worry of laws and other issues. I think what made this library so special to me was browsing through a section on maps and urban planning and suddenly turning around to find a whole area of books on Detroit. *heart* What a surprise. It's nice to see someone on the west coast care about poor old Detroit. :) Definitely coming here again.

Yelp
Awesome library practically made for serendipitous discoveries. Loved seeing all of the old atlases. I'm a sucker for maps :) Will definitely spend some more time here in the future.

Yelp
Fantastic spot for an afternoon of browsing, though hours are limited. The materials are arranged in a sort of a logical-leap stream-of-consciousness style, and it's all too easy to get stuck in a section of interest and squat next to the shelves until your legs are numb. Most of this library is made of stuff that was rescued when other libraries were getting rid of it - shocking, since you just can't find reading like this anywhere else! A lot of what's here provides a fascinating snapshot of another era. There's also a focus on more visual material (maps, photos, diagrams) which can be captured/appropriated for whatever project you dream up.

Yelp
this library is pure rapture. an intoxicating mixture of old books, magazines, ephemera and timelessness. this "browsing" library encourages you to get lost and lose track of your intentions, allowing you to stumble upon esoteric discoveries and back to the future glimpses into america's sordid past. your time here is always well spent and i guarantee you will be delighted by whatevever you uncover.
