On the Grid : Presents of Mind

"A cornucopia of unique gifts and cards, with a lot of love given to Portland and Oregon. You’d think that everything would have a bird on it, but Presents of Mind shakes the cliche. Instead, there is jewelry, knick-knacks, clothing, and a fun selection of books to guide the crafting of even more funky gifts. Hard to go wrong here for birthday or holiday shopping." - Kevin M. First of all, it’s hard to remember a time when this store wasn’t around. It’s a great shop. You can find something for everyone here. But most of all, such great staff. I was there a few months ago with my son and wanted to purchase something for him w/o his knowledge. I held my card and the item and mouthed to the staff member that I was trying to hide it from him. They discreetly took the stuff from me, rang me up, and gave my card and the purchase back and my son never knew. I was there with my husband earlier this week and they did the same thing for him, as he was getting me something. Top notch to people who know how to be discreet. 10/10 recommend this cute shop.

Google
Bought a box of thank you cards for $12.95. This is a great shop for small gifts, cards and wrapping paper.

Google
I loved the wide variety of presents and very reasonable prices. Highly recommend. Cute little animals and crystalballs for 5 to 10 dollars. Look for dinosaur mood rings. SO SLAY

Google
Lots of things to look at! Almost no room to walk around it was so packed with goodies. Great place to visit for local and not local gifts.

Google
The customer service is amazing! Walked in like a lost puppy for graduation gifts and walked out feeling like a pro! Thank you for going above and beyond to wrap up the presents for my cousin's high school graduation!

Google
The brightest nicest and most suited store to buy mom and anyone you love gifts! Exceptional customer service from Gerri, no better place to shop.

Yelp
This is such a cute little shop. I was able to find a few things that I hadn't seen anywhere else in town. It's on Hawthorne so good luck with parking.

Yelp
I got a coupon for them and I loooooove having an excuse to visit though I don't need one. This store is a favorite shop in Portland and it is a glorious collection of Portland featuring a lot of local jewelry and art. Today I grabbed some cards from Bug Art and local artist Rachel Austin who is a favorite of mine. Pro tip if you are a massive art person like me...I ran out of room so long ago. My solution is cards or smaller prints from artists I frame for my walls. I also love giving them as framed gifts for friends for something unique. And this store has some great wrapping paper, gift bags and tons of wonderfully unique cards. Take your time wandering through because each shelf has something different. The people who work here are super fun as well which makes the whole experience purely delightful as shopping should be.

Yelp
This little shop on Hawthorne was super fun to pop in to. I loved their selection of witty and sarcastic cards and ended up with the perfect one for my bestie's upcoming birthday. Plenty of Portland branded items without feeling like an airport souvenir shop. There's so much more than just birthday cards here (although they literally have one for everyone among the diverse selection). The store is well laid out and incredibly organized. You're definitely going to find a little something for yourself or someone you know in this place. Check it out.

Yelp
Still my favorite card shop in PDX. The best and nicest selection of cards I have found here.

Yelp
Found so many gifts here this holiday season. Got fun Christmas earrings and light up necklaces for my Mom and I. Found a beautiful alpaca scarf for a present. They had great funny cards. Many nice earrings I would like for presents. Oh and a fun Bigfoot electronic noisemaker that everyone needs. So much fine and nice staff that wrapped items up.

Yelp
This is a great little gift shop in SE Portland. They've got just about anything you're loved-one is looking for as a gift. Huge selection of custom cards, tshirts, candles, cyrstals, jewelry, niknaks and one of a kind gifts. The staff here is super friendly and very accommodating. Dogs encouraged! Namaste!

Yelp
Probably the best of the quirky gift shops along Hawthorne, Presents of Mind is a bit like the TARDIS: it's bigger on the inside than it looks, and filled with a seemingly endless array of odds and ends collected from the far corners of the universe. Where this shop stands out above the rest is its stellar selection of items made in the PNW. Everything from clothes, glassware, greeting cards and more, these homegrown handicrafts bear the monograms and logos of local artists, studios and manufacturers. There's a feeling of quality craftsmanship and care in the selection of these items; a feeling which pervades the rest of the wares chosen to stock the shelves of this gift shop, even if the same items can be found elsewhere. Someone with a discerning and tasteful eye handpicked this collection of gifts, that seems to have something for just about everyone. You won't find nearly as many jokes-as-products items here, as you would at the nearby Memento PDX. But if you want to give the impression that you put more thought into your gift selection than simply grabbing whatever made you laugh, then don't buy on impulse; have the Presents of Mind to shop here instead!

Yelp
While it may appear random, this shop has thoughtfully curated unique and interesting items that span all ages and genders and price ranges. The selection includes jewelry samplings from local artists (personally love the long dangly earrings), pottery, kitchen and housewares, lots of clothing & toys for toddlers, books (many with eye catching titles!), gifts for your pets, socks with unique patterns or sayings, and lots of cards, beautiful wrapping paper and colorful stickers. Even a selection of Portland gifts to send to friends and family or for those visiting our City. One can lose themselves in the card area reading and laughing out loud! Definitely one of the best card assortments! Oh, they do have traditional cards also, but I prefer the non-g-rated and humorous cards best! Really appreciate the wrapping papers, colorful tissue paper that you can purchase by the sheet, and vibrant stickers to seal your gift. No need to buy rolls of paper or packages of tissues that you don't need or have room to store. You can buy that special gift and have it wrapped so it's beautiful to present and open. Nice touch. Store is small, appearing smaller because it's packed with inventory. Recommend making the rounds 2-3 times because you will definitely miss some items the first go around! Those that work here know that most customers are browsing, hoping to find an item they don't even know exists but when they see it, they know they have to have it. So I really appreciate that they don't ask the annoying question, "Is there something specific I can help you find?" They let you browse in peace; answer questions when asked; engage in conversation if that's your choice. Definitely my favorite type of customer service in a gift store. Had not been to Presents of Mind in a few years and happy that a night at the Baghdad Theatre & Pub across the street reminded me of this charming and quirky gift shop.

Yelp
Cute gift store with a large selection of different things like notebooks, soaps, jewelry, and even baby clothes. Things are pretty pricey, but good quality stuff!

Yelp
Their card section always has what I am looking for. Their gifts are so thoughtful. I love going to their store.

Yelp
What a cute store! I really enjoyed my time here and look forward to coming back for future presents! Cards, kitchenware, baby gifts, puzzles, and more! A badass sale section with cute cards for $2 as well!

Yelp
This store is adorable. Really nice if you are in need of a unique gift for anyone in your life. Great T shirt selection and quite a few baby items. I only wish the prices weren't so steep.

Yelp
I've been coming to the store for years-always has great gift options and card selection for my last-minute tendencies to get the goods! If you've never been you need to check the store out it's got everything!

Yelp
Lots of quirky gifts and souvenirs, homewares and jewelry. They seem to have nice Portland items - classy rather than tacky, as well as fun socks and a ton of humorous magnets. There are also many cards - all of the classy variety too. I could have spent more time looking around but would have inevitably spent more money too. There was a guy working who was friendly and answered my kids questions.

Yelp
Great shop with something for everyone that nobody needs but wants! Shop keepers were pleasant and friendly. The star highlight for me was finding some retired MRS.GROSSMAN stickers on the rolls. So happy!!!! Such a treat!!! I should have bought more.

Yelp
This is one of the best places for quirky, unique, fun, or thoughtful gifts! Love everything in this store. There is something for everyone here. Thank you so much to the employee who noticed my 3 year old daughter had to potty, and walked us through to the back to allow her to use the restroom :) she was having such a rough day and your attentiveness, and kindness brought me so much joy.
google avatar

Heidi L.

Yelp
I love this shop! We live in the neighborhood, and enjoy shopping for cards, gifts and the really unique jewelry ! Everything feels special and unique without being out of reach.
google avatar

Yelp
There are a gazillion gifty shops in Portland, and Presents of Mind is a standout. They are my go-to for unique stuff that I haven't seen elsewhere. They have a great mix of refined higher end artisan jewelry, as well as more kitchy fun earrings and bracelets. They pack a lot in a small space. Support local artists and businesses - they are being priced out of PDX.
google avatar

Rachel A.

Yelp
Wandered in on a whim, and found the exact sort of moth-shaped patch that I've been unsuccessfully searching for online for months! Nice! Seems like a good place to pick up a small present or quirky souvenir. They seemed a little low in stock in some things, like socks and boxers, but it is totally possible that they haven't re-stocked after the holidays. I didn't realize until after my purchase that I could have used a Chinook Book coupon. Darn! I'll just have to go back.
google avatar

Donna B.

Yelp
I had a great time in this store! There is so much to look at! Really cute place to check out! Wonderful customer service. Allow plenty of time to check everything out! Great fun! I can't wait to go back to Portland and see what they have the next time I am there!
google avatar

Valérie W.

Yelp
Excellent location with really fun items! A must stop shop for locals and visitors alike! With a 30 year record, this place is most definitely part of the heart of Portland. Check it out!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a cool store if you're looking for Portland-specific things. They have a little bit of everything from local companies. The range is from clothing, jewelry, housewares, children and baby, toys, and pet stuff. You name it. While I didn't find anything to bring back with me, it was a fun little venture.
google avatar

Danielle L.

Yelp
Cutest shop! We went back twice and all found perfect hipster dresses to wear!! They have unique items that are sure to make you smile.

Tammy H.

Yelp
BUYER BEWARE! I paid over a $100 more for necklace and returned very next day! This owner kept $52.50 as restocking fee! Seriously?? I called the owner and he was not reasonable at all! Please use another company as he is UNETHICAL!

Yelp
Presents of Mind's stated goal is to enhance peoples lives by offering high quality, fun, affordable goods for diverse and progressive social expression while providing quality service. And after multiple trips to Portland, the only words that might be missing from this description are sustainable and green. My point is that I hear all these words so often up here in this corner of the Pacific NW, that they soon begin to lose meaning and impact. However, based on my brief visit to Presents of Mind, they do seem to deliver on their charter. This is a neat place, with friendly staff, and a full (and packed) selection of jewelry, cards/stationary, baby stuff, and a wide variety of other accessories and gift. I could have stayed and browsed longer, but this selection wasn't my son's thing and he was anxious to move on.

Yelp
Oh, $15 coin purse, you were pricey, but that cat on the piano keys design was just calling out to me! You were handmade and cute, but you had me at CAT. And it just so happens that I play piano. We were meant to be. This shop is a go-to place to look for unique gifts ranging from thoughtful to cute to silly. Look through the reviewers' photos and you can see that the shop is a fun place to get lost in.
google avatar

Maranda W.

Yelp
Got some really cute whale earrings for my sister. Lots of cute items here! Staff was friendly and I would definitely stop in again.

Moonie M.

Yelp
One of the best shops in town. We usually find ourselves laughing out loud at something or other. I bet you can find a gift in here for most anyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute Heart Oregon souvenirs, like mugs, pins, stickers, etc. I picked up a few :) Also has a bunch of cute nik-naks, like mens socks, baby onsies, greeting cards, etc. Definitely a cute store of gifts and souvenirs!

Yelp
The funny is gone! Over the last year there has been an unbelievable decline in quality and quality of funny birthday cards. This has been my go to place for about 15 years. I have given feedback to many employees about how terrible the birthday cards have become. I used to spend a half hour trying to pick out cards. It was like Sophie's choice, there were so many good ones. I would stand against the wall and be in tears from laughing so hard. Now, the last year, it's bleak and the laughter is gone! There are really no funny cards anymore and the ones that bill themselves as humor are predictable and lack any level of creativity. RIP Presents Of Mind, you were once so great, so sad you are gone.

Yelp
Presents of Mind is a wonderful store which I've been to multiple times throughout my residence in Portland. I absolutely love that they participate in community things, such as Little Boxes, Chinook Book, and Yelp. Due to this, I don't think there's been a time that I've shopped here and not been able to use either a check-in offer or Chinook Book coupon. My fiance also won a $50 gift certificate after our Little Boxes adventures this year. Make sure the Force is with you while you're here, because they carry a wonderful selection of the Stance Star Wars socks and it's hard to resist falling to the dark side and buying them all... Sorry... Anyways... They also have a beautiful selection of jewelry and cards. I've also purchased a pretty sweet narwhal glass here, which I love. Narwhals rule.

Yelp
Biggest Joke of a store. Walked in today to grab somethings to bring back to California and immediately because I wasn't wearing a mask was approached by staff. (Totally fine) Particularly one woman on staff who upon approaching me automatically assumed I didn't have a mask and wasn't willing to put it on. Her attitude was absolutely horrendous and assumptive without even giving customers room to maybe make a decision to put a mask on. She claimed it was because they are a small business and that they can refuse service.. (not a law to wear a mask) totally understandable, what's not okay is for her to literally KICK ME OUT, without actually giving me the time to make the decision whether or not I wanted to stay and browse still with a mask. I can't support ignorant employees with low self esteem and a terrible attitude. Let alone a business that would employ such people. Prices for product were over priced. Staff was horrible. Seriously go to a hallmark, you're better off giving your money to a bigger business than this place. She was so awful and rude I straight up told her she was a complete bitch about how she approached me. Didn't even care if it hurt her feelings she was THAT horrible. I highly recommend management takes the time to train their employees on how to speak to people respectfully. Whether or not they are trying to enforce a mask rule (which no longer is law btw) the staff can be respectful and non judge mental and accusatory from the beginning. Had she given me time without automatically kicking me out I would have put on the mask. She clearly just decided she needed to be terrible. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME ON THIS SMALL BUSINESS. I WOULD GIVE THEM A NEGATIVE REVIEW IF I COULD!!!

Yelp
My brother, my kiddo and I were wandering about the Hawthorne neighborhood looking for some birthday goodies for the kiddo. She received some money the night before and I was looking for something good for her, so we ended up here at Presents of Mind. There's alot of stuff to take in. The infant/kids area was mainly geared to the onsie set and not a big selection for 4/5 year olds. The prices were a bit steep. $24.00 for a kids shirt is a bit much. Even thought some of the designs were pretty good. They carried cards and candles, some jewelry and toys, socks and stuffed animals. So I will say they had quite a bit to take in. My brother had shopped here once before (for an infant) and did well, but for me, it's not a place I'd rush out of my way to get to. Maybe in a pinch. I will say that the neighborhood is nice and had a very eclectic mix of stores and restaurants. Really cool place to be.

Diana S.

Yelp
Lived in Portland for over 18 years and this is still my favorite place to find presents, both for me and lots of loved ones. The products are great from clothing, jewelry, bath and body, art and more! And did I mention the fantastic array of greeting cards?! There is one for EVERYTHING happening in your life! I also love that they carry work from local artists and designers. The staff is always really friendly and helpful (even when they are busy). I will most likely be a customer for life. Can't have enough great things to say about this place.
google avatar

Cassandra C.

Yelp
Pretty cool place. I felt like it was trying too hard. I was definitely in the target demographic: childbearing age with a little quirk and flair. Pretty expensive for what you're actually being sold: matchboxes, earrings, sweatshirts. Made for great browsing, though! A staple for Hawthorne, I'd say.
google avatar

Kimberly V.

Yelp
The background of "present" as a noun comes from the French for "a thing offered or a gift." We all know this. Where I think the word gets really cool is the link to the verb tense, as in "to offer something or position before" as well as the adjective for "currently in progress or existing at this very spot in time." If you take all the meanings into account, then a present is an item that must be bestowed to someone directly, or presented in their presence. Before it reaches the vicinity of the one being presented, the thing cannot be a present. Trippy, no? Good thing that when I visited Presents of Mind with the intention of finding a birthday gift for JB, all I could see were stationary items, messenger bags, sweatshirts with cheery cartoons prints, galoshes lined up all shiny and colorful like bottles of nail polish, and jewelry. Most of the products are the labors of local artisans and designers. In short, stuff that I would like to have, sometimes on my person but not always. Can't be a present unless the presented one is present, right? Why is it so much easier to shop for yourself when you're supposed to be scoping out stuff for other people? And how did my checking account become several dollars lighter even before snagging what I wanted to buy for JB? That's a trip, too.
google avatar

Don B.

Yelp
Presents Of Mind is easily a one-stop shop for any and all gifting needs. This little store is insanely stacked full of the oddest, coolest stuff around. From KidRobot to GamaGo to local artisan-made goods to cards to bags to jewelry to clothing to books to tableware, these folks have it all. And at great prices. And with friendly service. And I scored a 20% off check-in offer when I was in the other day. Seriously... it would take hours just to look at everything in this crazy place.
google avatar

Britta E.

Yelp
This store exposes how selfish/self-centered/what a reasonably-priced jewelry whore I can be. I've been in here looking for gifts for nearly everyone I know and always have to start with oooing and awwwwing over the jewelry that I want. It's like a freaking magnet. Forgive me, but I can't even force myself to look at the stuff towards the front of the store--if I linger there, it's all for show and my heart isn't really in it. It's a must to do a few parades around the jewelry case, hovering at different heights and inching around on my knees to get a look in every nook and cranny. Some of it is like real-life, hands-on etsy-action what with the excellent and eclectic spread of local, handmade goodies. After I've satisfied some of my more shallow needs, I can usually get down to the biznass of shopping for others. This place is jam-packed with umm...presents. T-shirts, bags, books, baby things, toys for grown ups (no, not that kind), clever cards, and oh yeah, did I mention jewelry?
google avatar

Yelp
I cannot not buy something at this store. Believe me, I've tried. But I guess I'm just completely taken by the intimacy of the tiny shop and/or the sheer quantity of the trinkets and goods that pack the shelves. Walking in, I fall under the same spell, where any rational thought is replaced with something along the lines of "Why yes! I SHOULD spend part of my paycheck on a hand crafted notebook for my purse, a necklace with medical diagrams artfully composed for my jewelry collection, or a onesie with a tongue-in-cheek saying on it for the baby I don't have." Presents of Mind is tiny, and it's almost impossible to comprehend how they manage to get so many people and products in here all at once. The staff gladly obliges if you need help, otherwise you're able to peruse at your leisure. There's something that will be the perfect gift for anyone on your list without breaking the bank. Of course, if you're willing to spend a bit more, there's likely something to taunt you with too (like the oh so swanky but oh so spendy felt messenger bag I've had my eye on for months). This has become my go to spot for little gifts for friends and family, particularly of the female persuasion, for occasions that demand more than showing up with a 6 pack of PBR. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was something hiding here that could be paired with that too.

Jaclyn L.

Yelp
**Update (12/5/18). I appreciate the time you took to respond and explain how your inventory selection works. Just curious, what is the process of becoming a vendor at your location? I was a little surprised that there wasn't very much locally made product available for sale, but neatshop nonetheless.

Yelp
I never used to be a last-minute sort of gal. Needless to say, the tides have changed. And I kind of am. DON'T JUDGE! Either way, I stumbled upon the cutest little boutique that is--GASP--geared toward sublime presents. Most of which are so adorable you'll just want to keep it for yourself. Artisan ID holders, silly books (read: Porn for Moms, a book of sexxy mens with scintillating phrases, like, "I took care of the diaper"), lovely cards and stationery, jewelry, and bags galore! It's a cute-overload paradise! What's more, I was welcomed into this pastel paradise almost immediately by an equally adorable employee who looked like a modern-day Lucille Ball. Bright orange-red hair in a puffed-up pony tail, and a cute baby-blue pencil dress. Then this cute-as-a-button employee invited my friend and I to put our lattes at their designated "coffee visiting section." I can respect the no-drinks thing. So the sign was an extra-nice touch. Just don't forget your mocha there before you leave, because you might be in shock that you just spent your paycheck on purses and novelty shot glasses....

Yelp
Too hipster these days. Used to shop here back in the day. Stopped by for something we saw in the window. The item in the window was the last of the particular product in stock. We wanted to buy said item. We were told it was "too difficult" to get to. I could have grabbed the item myself with some minor effort. But yeah.... You're a shop - do you not want to sell the items you keep in stock? We were in shock. We had other items we were going to buy as well. Decided it was better to just leave without anything because we were unsure whether or not they really wanted to sell anything. I'd like to leave 0 stars after my recent experience (since you're supposedly in the business to sell but didn't appear interested in such things), but left two for history. Previously had positive experiences there, but the last time or two has been seriously frustrating.

Yelp
What I love best about Presents of Mind is that the buyer seems to have a deep affinity for birds. I can always, always find terrific bird-themed items here. Owls, check. Crows, check. Miscellaneous songbirds, check. It's great! I love their card selection. Just when I think I'm picking up something cute and serious...it turns out to be one of the best, most inappropriate, hilarious cards ever. Don't even get me started on the other side of the store. It's jam packed (and I do mean JAM PACKED) with so many fun little gifts and stocking stuffers and quick "thinking of you" items. It's a great store when you have to grab something quick and go...provided you can get through the crowd of people in the way!

Yelp
What a great shop! I would be in heaven if I lived in Portland and was within walking distance of this joint. It's quirky, and cool, chic, and fun. I bought birthday presents for people who's birthdays are months away! If you check in on yelp you get a 20% off coupon, but don't be a dope like me and forget to use it! I bought an awesome cookbook on baking with booze, yah! A super cute dish towel with two owls on it, and the item everyone needs...a pin for your hoodie which features a penguin sitting on a boat! Great prices I'd say, I don't recall being hit by sticker shock so it was all good. So much stuff I wanted to buy just because it was cute, or cool, but I only have so much room at home ya know? They have an amazing selection of quirky t-shirts, I kind of regret not getting a couple :( Def stop in if you're a local or a kind of tourist pretending to be local like me. It's a must!

Yelp
I could happily get lost in this shop forever, it's so nice and cozy and lovely. I couldn't find what I was looking for (charms for a bracelet I'm making for my best friend who's angry with me for missing her wedding :( )but there's so much to explore here. The store smells of sandalwood and paper and fresh cotton. They have lovely knick-knacks that you could get as presents, cool jewelery (lots of owl-themed pieces!), vintage dresses, and my favourite - really, really cute greeting cards. The Father's Day cards made me tear up a little bit. I'm coming back to get one for my father. You'll lose track of time here. It's great. Also, the fantastic air conditioning offered some respite from the insane heat outside (it was in the NINETIES!!!!!!!!!!!!).
google avatar

Yelp
I totally agree with everyone on Yelp...hands down...the best cards...ever! Sometimes when I am having one of those absolutely sucky days when it would just be easier to get hit by a bus, I check out the cards at Presents of Mind and start laughing my ass off. So, I guess you could say Presents of Mind has saved my life. It's like a crisis hotline, only different, because you have to buy stuff.

Yelp
My daughter calls this place "Jesse's store" after one of her favorite employees. They formed a friendship on Halloween when she was around 3 (she is 7 now). The merchandise they have here is very ecclectic and I love it. You have so many choices, if you want a serious gift they have those, if you want a yodeling pickle....they have that too!! The cards here are the best, I could spend my entire time looking at them and laughing, I have purchased several and no-one has ever been disappointed when they have received them. The staff here is super friendly and willing to help you with whatever you need. This place is a must for gifty things

Yelp
My Darling Husband joined me during one of my last shopping excursions to Presents of Mind. We found some great smelling soaps that were all handmade. Also, there were lots and lots of earrings and necklaces. One of my Husband's kidlets is obsessed with foxes. During another shopping trip, I bought an adjustable sizing ring for her that was a silver depiction of a curled up fox. I was told that she likes it. She doesn't have pierced ears, though.... because she is afraid of needles. Also, there were lots and lots of socks for sale. My Husband's other kidlet wears size thirteen shoes, so... I do not think that those regular sized socks will fit him. There were some stickers here that one afternoon... and I purchased a few. One of the sets of stickers was for my Husband's Birthday later that year. Those stickers state... " Happy Birthday. " He liked his surprise stickers. I don't think he'd ever seen Happy Birthday stickers before. He asked me where I bought them... so I told him, I was shopping at Presents of Mind earlier that year.

I visited this place often when I lived in Portland, not necessarily to buy anything, but it's a fun place to do some window shopping. Lots of locally made shirts, socks, and goodies, and a ton of silly and interesting things going on inside. It's a great gift store that is nothing like Spencers (if anybody knows what that ridiculous store is). One thing I always enjoy looking through is the buttons. They have a crazy selection of greater than 100 buttons with a variety of things on it, from animals to vegetables. I would probably buy things more often, but because I'm relatively poor I can't afford some of the prices (which, to be honest aren't extreme for what one is buying because the items aren't massed produced and they are locally made).
