Fantastic little store, right across from Salvatore Scallopini. The first thing that greeted us open entering was the wonderful smell of "pizzelle", traditional Italian waffle cookies that were being baked right in the front of the store.
That's the feel of the place - a cozy place that's family owned and operated. Throughout the shelves you'll find a cool selection of imported Italian coffees, chocolates, desserts, household nick-nacks, and other interesting items.
But the heart of the store is the deli area. An assortment of pastas made fresh daily, and an incredible array of meats and cheeses that they'll slice for you to-order. We picked up a mushroom pasta and the silkiest prosciutto I've had in years.
UPDATE: Someone we recommended this place to DIDN'T have quite as good an experience with their prosciutto, but I'll chalk that up to an aberration.
One thing to note: don't expect to be in and out within a couple minutes. The owners will make conversation with you while they slice the meats, they'll get to know what you'll be making with their products, they'll give suggestions, and they'll take their time to make sure they get it all right. It definitely adds to the charm, but it'll also add to the line at the counter during the busier times of day.
4.5 stars would be perfect, but because of the wait times, high prices (it's Birmingham, after all) and slight inconsistency, I'll have to go with 4.
