The Best Places in Europe to Soak Up the Winter Sun

"Best for: Low-season glitzDecember temperature range: 43-61°F Granted, you won’t be donning swimwear on Plage des Ponchettes or spotting A-listers in Nice's beach clubs come December. However, with up to nine hours of sunshine a day, the winter months are ideal for exploring Nice and the surrounding French Riviera towns—without the crowds that flock here each summer. Check out the Christmas village at Place Massena in Nice, spot the pop-up nativity scenes around the city, or pop to glitzy Monaco for a lavish lunch and glide around the ice rink. Where to stay: Anantara Plaza Nice is a luxe urban oasis centrally located for sightseeing and sunny lunches along the promenade. There’s a glamorous rooftop terrace for sea views and destination restaurants ideal for those occasional rainy nights. A version of this article originally appeared on Condé Nast Traveller." - David Annand, Connor Sturges

"At five minutes before noon every day, the uniformedCarabiniers du Prince performa ceremonial changing of the guard in front ofMonaco'spalace. Though theroyal family still lives in the palace, much of the year there are tours that visit a selection of state apartments, each room dripping with gilt, draped in silk, and decorated with the vast collection of artwork and furniturecollectedby the House of Grimaldi since it began in 1160.As devoted patrons of the arts, the royal familyhosts classical music concerts on the palace grounds every summer. Tickets to see Prince Albert II’s jaw-droppingly impressive collection of antique cars are also available."

French Riviera and Aix-en-Provence: The Essential Road Trip Itinerary | Vogue

"Book a flight that gets into Nice as early as possible, pick up your rental car, and head straight for Monaco. Grande Corniche will be the quickest route and takes you up through the mountains, but if you’re willing to spend the extra time to drive along the coast, take Basse Corniche. If you can swing it, arrive at Prince’s Palace by 11:55 a.m. to watch the changing of the guard and tour the royal family’s official residence." - Christina Liao

The Prince's Palace of Monaco is the Magnificent Residence of the Prince Albert and the Royal Family. Inside the Prince's Palace of Monaco, you can visit the publicly accessible Grand Apartments, which feature opulent state rooms like the Hercules Gallery, Hall of Mirrors, Throne Room, and Louis XV Salon, all decorated with period furniture, frescoes, tapestries, and artwork. Visitors can also see the Palatine Chapel and admire the Court of Honour. Beyond the state apartments, the palace grounds contain the Napoleonic Museum, a Car Collection, and the Palace Archives. The Prince's Palace of Monaco is the official residence of the Prince of Monaco. It's built on a former fortress site from the 13th century. Parts of the original fortress still visible within its stone walls and towers. Due to lack of time could not visit the interior of the palace. But enjoyed the spectacular, panoramic views of the city, the harbor with the yachts, and the surrounding mountains from the location of the palace. Wonderful experience even without getting inside the palace. Highly recommend it.

Fairytale & Legendary Palace They do not come much better than the Palace of Monaco. On the seaside, with fantastic weather a few soldiers and canons to guard the entrance. This is it, really nice and really enjoyed our visit here. The change of the guards is also interesting & very nice to watch. Overall fantastic experience!

Saw the change of guards ceremony. It was worth the effort to go uphill and watch this. Also, the gift shop in the courtyard is very reasonable compared to other souvenir shops in the city. The view of Monte Carlo from the palace is breathtaking.

I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the history of Monaco and it's monarchy. This palace is the seat of the royal family and still plays an active role in the government. They recommend purchasing admission tickets in advance online, but tickets can also be bought at the gift shop across the plaza. You will have to go though a security screening to enter the palace. The tour is self-guided, and an audio-guide in 11 languages is included with your ticket. An entire wing is open to the public, so allow at least an hour if you want to see everything. The audio-tour dives deep into the country's history, and I found it very interesting. Each room features beautiful artifacts, furnishings, and vivid information. Guide-led tours are also available, but must be booked in advance. If you plan to visit the nearby Oceanographic Museum on the same day, you can purchase a combo ticket to both for a reduced rate.

The Prince’s Palace tour was a beautiful, compact journey through Monaco’s royal history. The interior rooms, though limited in number, are richly decorated with Renaissance frescoes, tapestries, chandeliers, and marble flooring. The audio guide (included in the ticket) was surprisingly well done—clear, informative, and available in multiple languages. One of the highlights was the Changing of the Guard at 11:55 AM. It’s a must-see and adds a bit of pomp and tradition to the visit. Be sure to arrive at least 15–20 minutes early to get a good viewing spot. The palace grounds also offer stunning panoramic views over the harbor and city—perfect for photos. While it’s not as large or extravagant as some European palaces, its charm lies in its detail and setting.

A must see if in Monaco! I took the Hop on & Hop off bus tour to the Palace and in my opinion is the best way to get up there if you're a tourist! I actually got off the bus twice at this particular stop because it is so SPECTACULAR! Best views of Monaco. This is not a place, it's a DREAM! It could get very windy but that's all part of the allure. If you're traveling solo, then a selfie stick is your best friend. You'll get AMAZING shots. Other than the Palace, there are a few small places to eat and some souvenirs vendors, oh there was like some changing of the guard kinda protocol that took place for a few.

Visiting this palace turned out to be a great experience! Interiors are simply astonishing, and most of them are still in use from time to time. Audio guides are available and included in the ticket. The whole tour should take about 1,5 hour. Definitely worth visiting!
