What's so special about this bridge besides it gets you from point A to point B? If you don't know, you have totally missed out. The the Prince Edward Viaduct, as it's formally named, connects Bloor Street East with Danforth Avenue; the subway trains run right beneath it. My favorite view is when the train comes out of the dark tunnel into the light and you are greeted with the expansive view of the verdant Don Valley. You need to put down your phone, look out the window and take in all it's splendor.
Here's a little bit of the bridge's infamous history - "Tragically, the bridge became the site of suicide for more than 400 people from the time of its construction until 2003. To try and prevent this loss of life, in 2003, the City of Toronto, with support of the Danforth BIA, community groups and families who had lost loved ones, added a safety barrier to the upper part of the bridge. This safety barrier, called the Luminous Veil, is an award-winning design by Toronto's Dereck Revington." - toronto.ca.
"Thanks to a complex system of LED lights and sensors, the lights change colour according to the wind, temperature and season, 360 days a year. The lights will turn on 25 minutes after sunset any given day and turn off after sunrise" - Bloor Viaduct & Luminous Veil: 10 Things You Should Know.
Knowing the history and technology behind this marvel makes me appreciate it even more. I will be back to walk the bridge in Autumn to see the Don Valley in it's vibrant Fall wardrobe.
