We stayed here at the start of our south-to-north Dartmoor hike — a 30-mile adventure over two days — and the location couldn’t have been better. Right on the moor, it’s the ideal launch point for anyone tackling a big walk across this beautiful, rugged part of the country.
The accommodation was exactly what we’d hoped for: clean, comfortable, no frills, just what you want from a mid- to low-range pub stay. Perfect for hikers or those stopping over on a budget.
What really made our stay memorable, though, were the staff. From the moment we arrived, they were welcoming, full of good humour, and genuinely eager to help. We needed an early start for our first day of walking, and they kindly put together a packed lunch for us in place of breakfast, a small gesture that really went above and beyond.
We did have breakfast on our return stay at the end of the hike, and it was a lovely surprise, high quality, tasty, and clearly using good local ingredients. The sausages in particular were a highlight!
We’d happily stay again. A brilliant pub base for anyone planning to explore Dartmoor.
