My wife & I had our wedding here in June of 2012. What sold us on Price of Wales almost instantly as the choice of our venue over other locations was the professionalism of all their staff. It is quite remarkable--from the front desk clerk, to the restaurant waiters, to the valet men, and to our event planner, everybody seemed to be so courteous and properly mannered. And I do not mean that in a snooty way--I mean in a genuinely nice way. I usually do not expect people to bend over backwards for me, even at 5 star venues, as I am the type to bring up my own luggage and self-park my car. Still, I could not help but be impressed by the small details of professionalism here. Example: When you run into a staff in a hallway, they will always stop to smile and turn sideways to let you pass first. And everybody does this there.. amazing.
The second thing that sold us was the visual impact that this hotel makes. We had the thoughts of wedding photos in the back of our mind. And let me tell you... they sure do not make 'em like this anymore. I think no descriptions are needed--the pictures say it all. The last time I saw a hotel with this much timeless design and character was in Boston, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. In Canada, this has to rank near the top. They are part of a bigger group of hotels, called Vintage Hotels... but in my humble opinion, and maybe I am bias now, the Prince of Wales has the most charm (Queen's Landing probably close second).
As bride & groom, we received a suite on the second floor for our two night stay. The room was very spacious, well appointed, and followed the luxurious theme from the rest of the hotel, and maintained the proper period design. The most impressive part is probably the bathroom--all marble, has a jacuzzi tub and even has a towel warmer. First time I have ever seen one of those. Unfortunately we did have a couple of hiccups--we had a toilet pumping issue, and an electronic issue with our cordless phone. We reported it to the concierge, and the tech staff promptly rectified the issues, even in middle of the night (took no more than 10 minutes for a technician to come up and fix). One bonus for the brides to be: there was a "private" elevator right next to our room, which lead my wife right to the ceremony room, without her having to walk through the rest of the hotel in her wedding dress. How great is that?
The night before the wedding, we dined at the restaurant downstairs (I apologize for not recalling the name, but it is the only one there). The areas are separated--one is the main upscale restaurant, and the other is the pub/lounge. We were seated in the upscale restaurant, but to be honest, neither of us are the foie gras and truffle crowd, so we were initially not too excited about what was on the menu. But our waiter Dan was very accommodating, as he had no problem letting us order from the pub menu (we had the fish & chips--one of the best that I ever had).
The wedding itself went very smoothly without a hiccup. The flow of dinner service was impeccable and the quality of the food was not affected by the volume. Our menu consisted of the rib eye steak & chicken breast for our entrees, and both were cooked to perfection.
But....! Since nothing is ever perfect, what were the gripes? Only a few. First, the whole event was not cheap--but then again, that was expected, considering the very upscale nature of the venue. Compared to your typical city wedding banquet hall, you can expect to spend 30-40% more per person. So budget accordingly :)
The ceremony room was also somewhat dimly lit, and the windows let the sun in toward the photographers, so it actually did not help. Mind you, it is not an issue to your pro photographer with pro equipment since they know how to deal with it, but not great for your guests' with point and shoot cameras.
And finally, the event rooms size are somewhat on the smaller side. The ceremony room can seat about 65 or so max, or you will be asked to rent the thinner chairs, which can push the seating capacity to past 85. The reception room can accommodate a lot more guests (I think up to 90 or even 100?), but it definitely eats into the dance floor. So if you are thinking about having a huge wedding with 500 guests, this probably will not work out for you. We had about 90 guests, and it worked out well for us (limited dancers).
Taking all the positives and negatives into consideration, I would still rate the venue with the highest score possible. In fact, I highly recommend Price of Wales as a wedding venue, or even just as a weekend get away to anyone. The staff, the sights, the history and the charm at Prince of Wales will make your special day a truly memorable one.
