3 Best Day Trips from Toronto | Condé Nast Traveler

"If Victorian-era digs are your thing, this is the Niagara-on-the-Lake hotel for you. Without being fuddy-duddy, the elegant Prince of Wales brings British-inspired hospitality to Canada. The hotel sits right on the main drag, making it prime for those who’d prefer to stroll around rather than drive. One of its biggest features is its popular afternoon tea, which draws not only guests, but a number of other visitors in town." - Stefanie Waldek

We stayed in a pretty blue room in the annex of the hotel for 3 nights. ||We were made to feel welcome as soon as we stepped inside - really nice. Indeed, throughout our visit, we found that nothing was too much trouble from all the staff which makes a huge difference.||Had a large comfortable bed and nice bathroom with all that we needed. It was slightly dark so a couple of extra lamps wouldn’t go amiss. We also had a separate lounge area complete with coffee machine and comfy settees.|The welcome we received upon arrival was exceptional and our heavy luggage was all taken to our room for us thank goodness. |There is a nice bar/pub in the hotel and we dined there twice - all very good. Service was incredibly friendly and helpful. (We did meet a lady also from England and she hadn’t had quite the nice experience that we had and had to request a move to another room).||Slight mix up about breakfast. We didn’t think we had breakfast included but were told in the dining room the next morning that it was so we booked the next day as well to be told (by a slightly surly waitress) that it wasn’t. We wouldn’t have booked the second day if we’d known that! Anyway, breakfast was excellent - we had porridge and the omelette and they were both good. The coffee wasn’t! Tasteless!||All in all a very nice visit in an historic gracious hotel. ||Niagara on the Lake and the Prince of Wales hotel has left us with many pleasant memories. Thank you!

Right in the heart of Niagara on the Lake. Wonderful facility, old British style with wood paneling, antique decor, gold facets. Enjoyed a wonderful "Churchill coffee" on the patio, watching tourists, enjoying the atmosphere. A good place for a romantic dinner. I believe they also have weddings there, especially small (50 or so guests) but not sure. After lunch, try the horse drawn carriage, a service that meets at the hotel. Very classy place, with friendly, classy staff.

We loved our stay. The staff was so kind and helpful. The location was perfect! The room was beautiful and spacious. We enjoyed the pool and the spa. There is nothing that I would change. We hope to return again. A special to shout out to Jason the bellhop, Brandan , who provided shuttle service and Niko at the front desk. Thank you all for doing your job so well and thank you to other kind staff, but we just don’t know their names. All were fantastic!!

This was our second stay at the property this year, and it was just as memorable as the first. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to a spacious and elegant two-room suite. During our previous visit, we dined at some of our favourite local spots, so this time we decided to try the hotel’s restaurant. The date night special was fantastic—my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We also couldn’t resist finally trying the burger night deal we’d seen advertised on every trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The restaurant was packed, and for good reason—the burgers were outstanding! It felt like the whole town had come out for it. From start to finish, the service was exceptional. We are looking forward to our next visit.

We visited the Prince of Wales for our anniversary and it was fantastic!! The hotel is very charming old-world style and it gives off a very world traveler vibe. Everything was perfect for us. We enjoyed a fireplace balcony room, and it was lovely! The staff was completely accommodating and very easy to deal with. We enjoyed breakfasts and dinner on site and that too was quite nice. The food was EXCELLENT and the service impeccable. Special thanks to Anna (from Ukraine) and Graham who both went out of their way to make us feel special. We will be back!!

Google
Experienced the afternoon high tea here. The service here was amazing. I wasn't sure what to expect as I had never been to a high tea, but the menu was well laid out and simply to read. I tried the traditional tea with 2 other friends so we shared a tray of goodies. I'm not a big tea drinker but they have something for everyone. I tried the peaches and cream tea and it tasted kinda like candy. The setting is beautiful and when it's busy it's somewhat loud.

Google
What makes this hotel special is the outside and the location. The architecture is charming, and lures many tourists to stare and take lots of photos. The location is ideal as it's right downtown where there are lots of shops and restaurants. The theatres are close by as well. The inside, however, is rather dim, dull, and dreary. There has been a workmen drilling away as if he's a dentist boring down on your unsuspecting teeth. Would be very happy if he'd go away. |The carpet and wallpaper both appear tired and dirty. The bed is comfortable, so that's a plus. The bathroom is clean, but I find the shower a bit odd as it's one that you have to hold.

Google
When we stayed here last month, it was beautiful and we loved the room and it's elegance. The pool was really nice and heated. We will go back. We got the dinner plan. The food was terrible and we left most of it. Neither one of us liked our meals. Husband's steak was really over cooked, dried out. My potatoes dry and burned a bit. The vegan protein ??? don't know what it was, no flavor. Next time we will not eat there.

Yelp
Had a lovely stay at the Prince of Wales. It was a special promotion that included breakfast. We got a suite with a fireplace and a wonderfully comfy king bed. The bathrooms have heated towel bars. The bedrooms have safes in the closet and plush robes. There is also a Nespresso coffee maker in the room, bottled water and fruit. Parking is in back of the hotel and is complimentary with your stay. We had breakfast in the Noble restaurant. Was a lovely stay all around. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Wonderful lobby and such a great tea room in the Drawing Room. Would love to stay here sometime for a change of pace and it isn't far from Niagara Falls and wineries.

Yelp
Had high tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel, but unfortunately it did not meet expectations of a classic high tea experience. First, the table as a whole had to decide on one to two tea choices only, and it was not up to the individual to select on their own choice. Probably because the restaurant was tight and there was not enough room on the table for individual teapots. The scones were probably the best item selection. The sandwiches and dessert were underwhelming; flavours were ordinary. I expected more from a well know establishment, especially bearing the Prince of Wales name. I have had better high tea experiences at other locations and at a reasonable price so not likely to return.

Yelp
We've stayed here many times over the years.. The hotel ,food and service are excellent. There are also packages that will take you to the many area wineries. The hotel is 19th century as is much of the town There is no need to drive with shops and restaurants all nearby.

Yelp
Plenty of on site parking, huge and clean rooms and your right within walking distance of the town. They have an indoor pool and fitness center. For dinning on the premises they have the Nobel Room. What I enjoyed most was the My Fair Lady Tea service in The Drawing Room.Make sure to make a reservation as it tends to fill up quickly. If your a tea lover this is perfect for you.I really enjoyed my visit and can't wait to return.

Yelp
The Prince of Wales is incredible , the rooms are clean and there's so much to see in the heart of niagra on the lake. There is a fitness center plus an indoor pool. The property has a restaurant the noble room, but the highlight for me was the my fair lady tea service in the Drawing Room.A must and not to be missed, but make sure to book a reservation as it gets sold out quickly. Plenty of on site parking and walking distance to the town to go exploring, can't wait to return.

Yelp
The phrase "this place has seen better days" was on repeat throughout my stay at the Prince of Wales. I feel perhaps in the 80's/90's this was the place to be, but it has stayed within that timeframe. We chose high-tea as one of our activities. The tea tower was fine but my god, the fruit flies. Fruit flies everywhere in the dead of winter. There were so many you would think they were paying guests? We had to swat them away from our food. I felt a bit sick after that. We had dinner at the Noble restaurant and found the presentation nice but it was all a facade. The steak was similar to something at Boston Pizza. And again - the fruit flies everywhere. Typically, that means there is a lot of moisture in the building which is especially strange in winter. At least that would explain the dour smell of the place.

Yelp
A few years ago, a couple of friends and I decided we wanted to try high tea service together somewhere. And then ... Pandemic. :-( Fast forward to last weekend, and we FINALLY made it to formal tea ... and we DID IT UP STYLE at Prince of Wales! Prince of Wales is located in the heart of Niagara-On-the-Lake. The only negative thing I can think of is the parking, which is negative for the entire village. Parking is metered street parking that is expensive and difficult to find. But once you find parking and make your way to Prince of Wales Tea Room, welcome to pure bliss! We made a reservation a few weeks in advance, which was a good idea because the tea room was full the whole time we were there. And this was during the off season. So definitely book ahead. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and seated promptly at our reservation time. Our waitress was attentive and sweet at could be. The tea service menu consists of a basic option, and then upgrades from there to include cheese and/or alcohol. My friends had the top-tier service. I went mid-level, adding cheese but no alcohol. We each picked our tea flavors, which were promptly steeped and brought to the table in adorable porcelain teapots. I like my tea plain and black, and the simple black tea I had was crisp and delightful. I drank the whole large pot! My friend's mimosas and our cheese plates were served first. The cheese plates had four varieties, very fresh fruit, and a cracker tray. It was a generous, satisfying spread. Next came the main course and dessert tower! The lovely tiered presentation had an assortment of four mini sandwiches, but I opted for the vegetarian spread so my watercress sandwiches were doubled. In addition I had an avocado crustini and cheese and veggie mini croissant sandwich. All was adorned with more fresh fruit. Atop the tower were desserts that included a lemon shortbread cookie, a pistachio macaroon, a mini eclair, a raspberry filled crumble cake tart, and an absolutely perfect scone. Served with the spread was fresh churned butter, creme fresh, and the most divine berry jam I have ever had. All of the food was absolutely delicious. It may look small, but it is a sneakily sizable tower and there is A LOT there! I rarely eat this decadently anymore, but I forced it all in because it was such a scrumptious treat--and. I. Was. STUFFED. Good thing I had plenty of tea to wash it down! :-D Tea service at Prince of Wales is pricey. My service with tip was just over $78 CAD. But for an occasional splurge for an absolutely divine afternoon, it was worth every single penny. I can't wait until a special occasion rolls around again that warrants another visit to Prince of Wales Tea Room!

Yelp
We really enjoyed our stay at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Our room was gorgeous. It was our anniversary and every interaction with staff had them wishing us a Happy Anniversary. We really enjoyed the pool. We had tea in the tea room and it was fantastic (I've written a review regarding that visit) and we had a few drinks and then dinner in the Churchill Lounge. They even had live music with a saxophone player. The hotels location is central to everything in town and there was no charge for parking, which was much appreciated.

Yelp
This is what you get by spending almost $400 American a night there. I asked for a different room. They said there is nothing available and this is an updated from my original reservation. I didn't ask for an upgrade but I wonder what the original room looked like if this is the upgrade. I left and asked for full refund. The room was also warm and the window was open. There was an odor in the room. I am still waiting to see if I get full refund or am I being charged a cancellation fee

Yelp
High Tea Experience. This was definitely an experience to be enjoyed with your friends & family. The assortment of sandwiches, dessert, scone and tea was great. Everything was tasty especially the croissant. The scone was fresh. We all tried different tea and almost all were rich in flavour. Loved seeing all the sought out details around the room and fresh flowers in the lobby infront of the stained glass mural.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for high tea on a Friday afternoon and it was just delightful. The space is beautiful (a little on the older side but still lovely) and they have a really great spread that comes with the tea service--finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, and of course delicious imported teas. We added the sugared violets to our package and it was a really nice touch (if you like floral flavored things, anyway). It's a lot of food, too. We ended up taking a lot of our desserts home with us because the rest was so filling. It's a little pricey but if you're on vacation and ok with a little splurge I highly recommend it. It's a fun experience and makes for a great memory.

Yelp
Delicious and beautiful spot for some ~royal~ afternoon tea (if you're also willing to leave with a lighter wallet)! I've been here many times and I come because I like the afternoon tea and the luxurious atmosphere of the hotel. It is expensive, but worth it. We ordered the Prince of Wales Afternoon Tea which included a small selection of Canadian cheese, it costs $42/person. All the finger tea sandwiches are delicious. The pastries were good too, they change every time I go. The scone is a little on the dry side but otherwise comes with a generous amount of cream/butter/jam. The tea selection is great and the menu has some nice tidbits of history in them. I went for my birthday and it was very sweet of the kitchen to spell 'happy birthday' in chocolate along my plate. The service was very good and our server was very kind. We left full and satisfied. Even took some pastries we couldn't finish to go. I only dock a full star because of the seating hostess. It has happened more than once where a hostess is not very kind when it comes to seating arrangements. I made a reservation for our party but it unexpectedly grew by 2 and was met with some unexpected resistance but was seated at a great table anyway... with plenty of seating leftover well beyond how long we sat there. Not entirely sure if this area was opened up for us, or if there were certain rules that were not explained to us or what have you, but I did not think it would be a big deal. They also wait to seat the entire party, so even if 3 out 4 guests are there, it seems that is not allowed. Otherwise, a great place and wonderful decor makes you feel like you were invited by the Prince himself!

Yelp
Pretty hotel dating back to the 1800s in beautiful Niagara on the lake. Great location close to restaurants, theatres and wineries. They have valet parking and the winery trolley stops out front. There are restaurants, lounges, a spa, small gym and indoor pool with hot tub. Our room was in the main floor and quite damp smelling. The A/C was very loud and the door did not close completely unless pulled very hard. The wall behind the door was dented by the door handle. The decor is quite "old and charming". They offer several packages and we chose the one with bf included, a bottle of wine and vouchers to visit wineries, the chocolate factory and lavender fields. The staff are nice and helpful.

Yelp
The steak burger was juicy and tasty, recommend. The side salad consist of fresh strawberry pieces drizzled with strawberry Salas dressing, interesting and refreshing combinations, recommend. The fish and chips, the fries was freshly cut and fried really well, crispy outside yet still juicy inside, recommend. For the fish filler, it is overly too much oil in the batter, not really recommend.

Yelp
We went to visit niagara on the lake and this was the hotel we were staying at. The hotel is lovely but the food in the lounge was downright awful. I had the chicken and waffles and literally it was a sad excuse for waffles. It was flat and gross, like it was made two weeks ago and no one ever ordered it. Their excuse was "oh it's a savoury pancake". Even the girl in the next table ordered it and didn't even touch the waffle. Also we had brewed coffee, it was $4 per cup. The prices were outrageous! There is probably restaurant down the street that tastes better and cheaper!

Yelp
I enjoyed a high tea here with my daughter many years ago and was hoping to enjoy a special meal here while doing some christmas shopping, sadly they were booked, that being said reservations for next visit would be wise to do considering new restrictions. The details in this hotel are just amazing and I wish I was able to get more festive and detailed photos of this beautiful Hotel. Now is the time to Visit this place if you want to enjoy the Charm of the Festive Christmas Season :)

Yelp
I stayed at the Prince of Wales hotel for a week long conference. A very classy old Victorian styled hotel. They ran out of double beds, so I settled to share a king room and I slept on a cot (that was quite comfortable- available with an extra charge). The hotel was very accommodating- even when i asked for an extension cord as there wasn't enough outlets in the room (as they are old). The spa is very nice if you decide to go for a self care day, next to the indoor pool. I didn't use any of these services as I didn't have time. The high tea experience was probably the highlight of my stay. For 42$ we got the most basic package. Each person gets to select their own tea (better to come in a group so you can sample each other's). The food display was exquisite! I am talking bourbon cupcakes, raisin scones with fresh cream and strawberry jam, ham sandwiches, cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, english biscuits- the list of mouthwatering items goes on. (I even had leftovers to eat for breakfast the next day- unhealthy I know!) The service was impeccable. For the first time experiencing high tea- it was a memorable one.

Yelp
Felt quaint cozy and luxurious! A nice little getaway! Nice pool! Afternoon tea! Amazing breakfast! Loved that it was right downtown but still a small hotel feel!

Yelp
My husband and I wanted to get away for a couple days this week to celebrate our anniversary and my birthday so we stayed at the Prince of Wales Hotel for two nights. I had booked it online last week and got the Internet rate of $199/night for a king room. When I checked in, I mentioned that it was my birthday and our anniversary and the fella at the front desk double upgraded us to a king suite. Sweet! The suite was very nice. I travel a lot for work so stay in "modern" hotels so it was nice to stay in an older hotel. The staff have all been friendly. The salt water pool is awesome! The hotel's location was great for walking around shopping, seeing a play (which we are this afternoon) and dining out (we didn't eat at the hotel). The bed was huge and high and comfy. The thermostat in the bedroom didn't seem to work (it wouldn't go lower than 74F). We told the woman at the front desk about it and she was on the phone immediately to have it taken care of. My only complaint is the Internet. In this day and age, WIFI should be free in hotels (especially at the prices here). The Internet here is provided by an outside supplier at $10/night/laptop. My husband and I each have a laptop so it was $20/night. I have a Bell Internet stick but it didn't work here. And it's bad enough that they charge us for the Internet ... but the service was spotty. We would lose it quite often which was very frustrating considering we are paying extra for it.

Yelp
My favourite hotel in NOTL hands down. I would get engaged here and have tea in the tea room. Super cute and quaint and prices have stayed surprisingly reasonable 20 years later.

Yelp
We came here for a late night drinks. Since we're driving back Toronto, we ordered non-alcoholic naked Caesar drink. Staff are friendly. Very nice place to chill out and just relax with friends. It was 10pm when we arrived so we don't have s chance to look around Niagara on the lake but even at night, the flowers surrounding the hotel looks gorgeous. Definitely coming back during day time. Parking from 8pm onwards is free.

Yelp
I had never been for high tea before and my grandparents wanted to take me for a treat. We decided to go with my cousins in March, as they have a buy-one-get-one free deal during this month. I wouldn't pay full price to go here as it is too expensive and you don't get as much as you pay. However, getting the BOGO deal was definitely worth it and I will be returning next March for sure! I don't even like tea that much but I really enjoyed trying different kinds here and the food was amazing! The sandwiches were good and the sweets were also very tasty! Not to mention, it was really cool walking around Niagara-on-the-Lake as the area is beautiful!

Yelp
My family and I have afternoon tea here twice a year for over a decade. We enjoy Niagara-on-the-lake and the ambience of Price of Wales. Over the years however the staff has continued to lack. The wait time to be seated has been difficult, especially knowing working are standing around nearby and don't have the obvious notion of grabbing assistance. The quality of the food has been better this year than in the last 5, however the tea choice box was not as potent as last year (maybe change out the tea to be more fresh). This time I enjoyed the Afternoon tea with family this past Sunday. The wait for our reservation was 15 minutes, and no one at the check-in table. I looked around for assistance only to find Rebecca, who looked to be a manager on her phone and speaking with other staff members away from her post. I walked up and asked if they can grab who was suppose to be at the post, and 5 worked looked on and didn't assist. She didn't apologize , she didn't assure our table was ready (which is wasn't), and didn't offer extra assistance. She actually had quite an attitude. She may begin to go other places nearby for tea if this behavior and ambience continues. Many other luxury establishments are popping up nearby with the same service and better quality menu items, and maybe the staff here and learn from their competition.

Yelp
I came here for a series of large meetings and have to say, the experience was phenomenal. Right from the offset, staff were friendly, open, and willing to work with us as a group to make our meetings a seamless success. I had the pleasure of working with Juan on our logistics and he exemplifies exactly what you want when working with facilities. He was accommodating, genuine, and really showed a lot of passion for what he does. The rooms are beautiful and add a great vintage theme which created great atmosphere for our evening festivities. One thing a lot of conference hotels struggle with at times is the food and I can assure you, the food was great as well. Always some variety and really great flavour. I strongly recommend visiting this hotel and eating at the Noble dining room. What an absolute treat.

Yelp
I was highly expected this afternoon tea in celebrating my birthday. This is my first time entering this restaurant, however it is not the first time that I have the English afternoon tea. The staff would simply asked if you have been in this restaurant before without asking if this is your first time experiencing the afternoon tea. We also try to present the coupon with the 2 for 1, and the receptionist who was watching us reaching the coupon out from our pocket immediately replied, " I don't need to see it!" I just found her response was rude and it already ruined my birthday celebration. The server didn't even try to get to know us by simply explaining the tiers of each of the afternoon tea set...which I found very boring. In addition, I didn't like the taste of the dessert part, just think it is too sugary compare to other afternoon places that I've tried in Toronto.

Yelp
We had lunch in the lounge before a play at the Shaw. I was shocked at how tired and tattered the place seemed. Menus were old, dirty and out of season. For a hotel that fancies itself a four diamond destination, I was not impressed by the service of food. Granted, the lounge is more casual, but nothing seemed charmingly old or brand spanking new. Just sad. The menu was very tired and nothing appealed, but I enjoy a cheese plate. Confusingly, one must purchase each cheese individually in a 2 oz portion with the the very same accompaniments of dried cranberries, nuts and honey with each. The cheeses offered were great, so I ordered 3. But was confused why one person would order just one piece of one type of cheese. The sever warned me that the portions would be large, but I figured we could wrap up the leftovers and enjoy an impromptu picnic along the parkway afterward. When the cheese arrived there were three separate glass plates that were pre portioned. They barely fit on the table. I asked the server if there was a way for him to arrange the three cheeses on one plate and he said no. Citing that they are pre portioned in the kitchen and when they are ordered, they just grab them and bring them out. I work in a restaurant and this is a terrible way to serve your customers. Why not just do a varied cheese plate with three selected cheeses on it? No one wants to order just a piece of blue cheese with crostini and honey. People want a taste of a few different cheeses. I found this bewildering. Service was friendly, but they got slammed right before the show. We didn't receive any special attention before that. Several times I tried to get the attention of service staff before the rush, but they weren't watching their sections. Getting another glass of wine took 15 minutes. My partner's Fish and Chips was ok, but not what you'd expect from a place like the POW. Sadly, the service model here is fading. With people expecting more, especially in a destination like Niagara-on-the-Lake, The Prince of Wales feels like an old GrandDaddy who needs a serious rehaul of their service model and bare bones decor.

Yelp
Came here for afternoon tea for two Pros: - So beautiful! They really spent a lot of time refurbishing the place! - The scones are absolutely amazing! - The honeycomb chai is also amazing if you're a chai person - It is expensive ($34/person) but they have a coupon in November for two people for the price of one! Cons: - I think it's worth it to go in November b/c of the price

Yelp
I did not stay at the hotel, but I had breakfast in the dining room, not the tea room. The decor is charming and quaint, and the staff was very nice. My server forgot my mimosa--not a big thing, but it was a bit surprising considering the obvious concentration on service. The food was delicious and served promptly. We were not rushed, despite the weekend crowd. If you'd like to start your day in this beautiful area with a fancy breakfast, I recommend a stop here.

Yelp
Came here for afternoon tea with my mother on a weekday around 14:00. Boy was it busy! It must have been because of the two-for-one deal they had going on. We were greeted by three lovely young ladies who escorted us to our seats. My mother ordered Earl Grey and I ordered an herbal ginger tea with our afternoon tea set. Once it arrived, we were suggested to eat the warm scone first (which happens to be the best thing there). The rest of the sandwiches, goat cheese and Spanish quiche, and desserts were all mediocre. I was expecting something chocolatey, not a boring sugar cookie. I wouldn't mind going back if they had the 2-for-1 deal again. Check out the bathroom, it's really nice.

Yelp
Amazing !! So nice ... wish people respected the tradition and experience more and didn't wear baseball hats and super casual clothes. It is a special treat and more formal. Delicious and service was impeccable! Planning on going back for sure

Yelp
I was at this normally good restaurant this past weekend, but outside of the establishment, I ran into members of a wedding that was being held onsite . What I heard from them shocked me. They bragged that provincial vaccine requirements didn't apply to them and that the Prince of Wales had waved them in the case of this wedding. The rest of us are following the rules, but not these people and the higher ups with the Prince were completely ok with this in the name of a tidy profit. They must not care so much for their other guests and it makes one wonder what other standards aren't being followed. Are they not bound to the same rules that every other establishment is?

This was our #1 choice for our wedding venue... until we went there to see it in person and of course it was gorgeous, but Matt at the front desk was so rude to my mother, myself, and my fiancé. Friendly service is more valuable to us than anything else in a venue. This is our big day! We don't want to be talked down too or choose a venue that treated us poorly. On the bright side, we met the sweetest lady named Philomena that night. She went above and beyond to show us around despite the fact that her shift was over and she was just about to leave. Thank you so much to Philomena, you completely turned our experience around!

Yelp
Great hotel and excellent staff, no surprises. The only hard part is finding a room because it's gets booked quick. At first it was booked out and we ended up booking Post House Inn. But after our bad experience there, we decided to see if Prince of Wales had any last minute rooms. Luckily a nice king room and it ended up even cheaper than at Post House Inn. There was no attitude at this hotel and the service was great!

Yelp
We stayed here for two nights for my husband's 30th birthday. It was mid-March, so definitely off-season and not busy one bit on the streets. This place is another story, however! It was busy at all hours -a good feel considering NOTL is a ghost town off season. The restaurant, the drawing room, the lounge -everything was busy and alive! I highly recommend the Sommelier tasting that they offer on Friday nights at 5pm. You come down to the lobby and Fred, the Som, comes and brings you down to the wine cellar. Fred is very knowledgeable about the hotel, the history, events, in addition to wine, of course! Our tasting event consisted of us and one other mid-30's couple. It was the perfect way to relax into your weekend at Prince of Wales hotel. We stayed in room 302, a suite with a fireplace in a large sitting room, a large bedroom and a large bathroom. We are used to staying in cities, so this much space felt great! The room is inviting and relaxing. There was a bowl of oranges and bottled water waiting for us. There is not a bar but we used a tall TV stand as our setup for drinks. Ice room is just down the hall. We had a bedroom window as well as a living room window overlooking the park. The fireplace provided warmth as well as ambiance. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being fantastic, I would rate the comfort level of the bed as being about a 6 and the pillows about a 2. The bed is springy and at first feels comfy but after a while you can feel every lump and bump. The pillows were synthetic -if you prefer down, you need to call to the front desk. The pillows were hideous. Well past their prime. (Please consider replacing these!) They are lumpy and not uniform in shape or thickness. My first night's sleep was interrupted by stiff neck and tossing and turning. Luckily I brought my own pillow that I had left in the car. And we called down the next morning for down pillows. Quite a bit better. My only other gripe was housekeeping. Very little effort was put into cleaning. Orange peels, garbage, empty waterbottles were left as is. Other hotels I've stayed at has housekeeping that goes above and beyond what is necessary and folds clothes left on the bed and floor. I am not asking for this! But at least tidying up the garbage and emptying the garbage cans would make it feel a bit cleaner and more "four star hotel-like". I can't complain about the cleanliness, though -the entire hotel is spotless and clean smelling. The decor is beautiful and well-dusted. Old oil paintings adorn every wall, inside the room and hallways. I would HIGHLY recommend staying here and when we come here again we will most certainly request this room again. (Please see my other reviews for the restaurant, Escabeche, as well as afternoon tea at the Drawing Room and drinks at the Churchill Lounge)

Yelp
Room was neat , I loved all the paintings on the walls. :-) There were many people that we couldn't get a afternoon tea in time. I like the guy whom drove us back from Pillar post, he was very kind of person. We had dinner at that time was busy as their famous saps. Food and service were quite ok, instead of my favorite wine sold out. We planed to have a such weekend soon for the afternoon tea and the spa.

Yelp
WAY OVERPRICED. Service is terrible, not modern. Also the spa is not great either. Ordered strawberries and champagne for anniversary and checked 3 times it would be in the room when we arrived. It wasn't of course! Then had to call front desk 2 more times to ask and it finally arrived, then they still charged us $80.00!!!! Will never go back.

Yelp
Great environment and food! The music also goes very well with the overall. Classy ambiance and courtesy are a signature for this place. The food also has quality ingredients and is very tasty! I loved it!

Yelp
Why oh why do you put people in room 207? It's the haunted room.....and weird stuff was happening all night. (Google it) Nice hotel but not worth the money. I guess it's just not my style. Had a nice meal at the restaurant there but enjoyed the pub much more. See my review about where to eat breakfast.

Yelp
The gluten free French toast in the restaurant was the best I've ever eaten. Thick delicious freshly baked bread!!!

Yelp
Great location and wonderful building. Watch out however which room you get. Our's was on the backside next to the aircon/exhaust: The wall rattled and vibrated all day & night. We felt like sleeping next to the engine room of an ocean cruiser.

Yelp
Had the most disappointing stay here; we were really looking forward to having a mini vacation here with our two small children 8 months and 2 years. When I called to make the reservation I told them I wanted the very best king deluxe suite with fireplace and jacuzzi tub, and obviously big as I'd have the kids set up there as well and it could get a bit crowded. I remember asking if we could have the one pictured on the website and the woman said she didn't know if we'd get that one but it would still be nice. I also specifically asked that a travel crib or toddler bed be provided and was assured that would be fine. I was taking our own playpen for my 8 month old but our daughter is slightly too heavy and too long to go in a play pen. First of all, when we arrived, it felt very unprofessional just the way we weren't greeted by a bell boy and were asked as a last minute thought if we needed help with our bags, we said yes obviously, and the guy came out still putting his uniform on. Then it was a mission to get to our room out of the main building into another one up a bunch of stairs through all these doors - not easy when you've got a very chunky little man in a car seat and a toddler with short legs. All that wouldn't have been so bad except when we got to our room I actually thought there must have been a mistake. It was tiny, dark, out of date (and yes I know the whole point is that it's vintage charm but it's still supposed to be updated the way the restaurant and lobby are, this looked like it had been decorated in the 1970s or earlier) and it also had a really weird damp smell. Our experience continued to go downhill from there, as they had no sort of bed that would accommodate my 2 year old even though I had specified what I'd need and was told they had it. Because she hadn't napped yet I asked if they could bring it in earlier than they usually do. The bellboy called down to ask for me, he said they had a sort of solid wooden travel crib that should be fine for her (she still sleeps in a crib at home). But when they brought it up it was just a foldaway play pen like we'd brought for the baby. So then they suggested a single size cot not something meant for a toddler like I was under the impression they had. If I knew this was all they had I could have brought guard rails so she wouldn't roll off. The end solution was just putting a (very old yucky looking) mattress on the floor with a sheet that wasn't even fitted. There was no way she was going to stay sleeping on this through the night and since the door can't be locked from the inside there was nothing stopping her from just getting up and leaving our room. My husband told them we'd asked for the nicest room (we don't go away a lot anymore so we were making a big deal of it) and were told this was the best room in a very rude way. We called the vintage hotels number and told them and also that we'd maybe like to go to one of the other hotels if there were no better rooms available here but the front desk soon called us to tell us that there were no other suitable rooms at either that hotel or the other ones so we decided to leave rather than be miserable as our own bedroom at home was much nicer and twice the size. The front desk called back a few seconds later to ask if we needed help with our bags which was nice but then when my husband said we could probably manage they just hung up on him without saying anything else. To their credit they said they would release us from the pre authorized payment which seems fair since we drove two hours to Niagara on the lake and only ended up at the hotel for about 3-4 hours before having to then drive back and cancel all our plans for the next few days. Additionally, I'd forgotten there was a pool so we were excited to see that there was one and I happened to have our toddler's bathing suit but not my husbands. He was told they sold some in the spa and he eagerly went down to buy some but they were of course out of stock. That's not really a big deal, it's just frustrating when you're told something is offered and you get your hopes up only to not have it followed through on, which is how we felt about the whole situation overall. We'd been looking forward to this for quite some time as my husband owns his own company it's very hard to get away for even just a few days and we'd always wanted to stay at the prince of Wales ever since we went to Niagara on the lake years ago for an anniversary. This experience has definitely left us with a sour taste in our mouth though and wishing we'd gone with original choice of another hotel as our holiday has been ruined.

Yelp
My wife & I had our wedding here in June of 2012. What sold us on Price of Wales almost instantly as the choice of our venue over other locations was the professionalism of all their staff. It is quite remarkable--from the front desk clerk, to the restaurant waiters, to the valet men, and to our event planner, everybody seemed to be so courteous and properly mannered. And I do not mean that in a snooty way--I mean in a genuinely nice way. I usually do not expect people to bend over backwards for me, even at 5 star venues, as I am the type to bring up my own luggage and self-park my car. Still, I could not help but be impressed by the small details of professionalism here. Example: When you run into a staff in a hallway, they will always stop to smile and turn sideways to let you pass first. And everybody does this there.. amazing. The second thing that sold us was the visual impact that this hotel makes. We had the thoughts of wedding photos in the back of our mind. And let me tell you... they sure do not make 'em like this anymore. I think no descriptions are needed--the pictures say it all. The last time I saw a hotel with this much timeless design and character was in Boston, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. In Canada, this has to rank near the top. They are part of a bigger group of hotels, called Vintage Hotels... but in my humble opinion, and maybe I am bias now, the Prince of Wales has the most charm (Queen's Landing probably close second). As bride & groom, we received a suite on the second floor for our two night stay. The room was very spacious, well appointed, and followed the luxurious theme from the rest of the hotel, and maintained the proper period design. The most impressive part is probably the bathroom--all marble, has a jacuzzi tub and even has a towel warmer. First time I have ever seen one of those. Unfortunately we did have a couple of hiccups--we had a toilet pumping issue, and an electronic issue with our cordless phone. We reported it to the concierge, and the tech staff promptly rectified the issues, even in middle of the night (took no more than 10 minutes for a technician to come up and fix). One bonus for the brides to be: there was a "private" elevator right next to our room, which lead my wife right to the ceremony room, without her having to walk through the rest of the hotel in her wedding dress. How great is that? The night before the wedding, we dined at the restaurant downstairs (I apologize for not recalling the name, but it is the only one there). The areas are separated--one is the main upscale restaurant, and the other is the pub/lounge. We were seated in the upscale restaurant, but to be honest, neither of us are the foie gras and truffle crowd, so we were initially not too excited about what was on the menu. But our waiter Dan was very accommodating, as he had no problem letting us order from the pub menu (we had the fish & chips--one of the best that I ever had). The wedding itself went very smoothly without a hiccup. The flow of dinner service was impeccable and the quality of the food was not affected by the volume. Our menu consisted of the rib eye steak & chicken breast for our entrees, and both were cooked to perfection. But....! Since nothing is ever perfect, what were the gripes? Only a few. First, the whole event was not cheap--but then again, that was expected, considering the very upscale nature of the venue. Compared to your typical city wedding banquet hall, you can expect to spend 30-40% more per person. So budget accordingly :) The ceremony room was also somewhat dimly lit, and the windows let the sun in toward the photographers, so it actually did not help. Mind you, it is not an issue to your pro photographer with pro equipment since they know how to deal with it, but not great for your guests' with point and shoot cameras. And finally, the event rooms size are somewhat on the smaller side. The ceremony room can seat about 65 or so max, or you will be asked to rent the thinner chairs, which can push the seating capacity to past 85. The reception room can accommodate a lot more guests (I think up to 90 or even 100?), but it definitely eats into the dance floor. So if you are thinking about having a huge wedding with 500 guests, this probably will not work out for you. We had about 90 guests, and it worked out well for us (limited dancers). Taking all the positives and negatives into consideration, I would still rate the venue with the highest score possible. In fact, I highly recommend Price of Wales as a wedding venue, or even just as a weekend get away to anyone. The staff, the sights, the history and the charm at Prince of Wales will make your special day a truly memorable one.

Yelp
Gorgeous hotel. Boyfriend took me here for a weekend getaway for my birthday. We stayed here two nights, free wifi. Turn down service is awesome, they turn on jazz music and leave a rose on the bed. There were also bottles of water and oranges on the coffee table. We got a room with a jacuzzi tub, super relaxing. They give you bath salts but I'm not sure why they don't supply bubble bath, they left an extra bottle of shampoo, so I used that for bubbles. The shampoo and conditioner felt really nice, haven't really heard of the brand but they supplied Gilchrist & Soames products. The aloe bar soap was also pretty nice, I took the extra bar from the second day home. Only complaint: for a fancy place they should really upgrade the toilet paper, I feel like that wouldn't be very expensive. The stuff they had was like tissue paper-y

Yelp
My wife and I stayed here in 2009. A beautifully quaint hotel, this is a gem of a find. Because of the small size yet busy profile the hotel purchased large homes that neighbor and just adjoined them all into one without changing much of the original home. This made it a very fun and clever experience. Walking the creaky wood floors from one house to a Victorian carpet laid halls of another without going outside or really noticing anything other then the change in decor made for great viewing, especially if you like history/antiques. The town(Which I will review separate) is simply amazing and one of, if not the most beautiful towns I have ever been too. The staff are friendly, the decor is fitting with the history and the rooms are top notch. You get what you pay for in this hotel and for that I give it 3 stars. The fourth is lent to the towns beauty and elegance.

Yelp
Lovely weekend spot for couples or friends, even during a snowstorm! Enjoyed a wintry evening away. Check out packages available. Our dinner at Escabèche was divine. The head chef, pastry chef, and staff were incredible. Our premium room had a fireplace and gorgeous king-sized bed. Relaxing, quiet, and comfortable. When we retuned from dinner, staff had placed a rose on the bed and had tuned the radio to a soft jazz station. We had a marvellous time. Will return.

Yelp
Just stayed here this weekend and had a wonderful stay. The staff was really nice, very accommodating. The room and hotel itself was beautiful. We ordered room service twice and it was phenomenal! We got a couples massage too and it was amazing. It was definitely expensive, but it was a nice treat. Great if you're looking for a weekend away to pamper yourself!
