This morning, we rode an hour in the rain to our truffle hunting destination. We didn't know what to expect.
We--well, actually I (it was a bit wet with too many tree roots and low hanging branches for my partner) went truffle hunting with Sky the dog and Igor Jekić He is married to Višnja Prodan, whose family have been truffle finders for generations. The two of them, both my son Nick's age and also engineers, left their factory jobs to run the truffle hunting business, along with Višnja's brother, Mirko, I believe.
The setting was lovely. I pulled on the boots and rain jacket provided to me, and off we marched into the woods. After our successful hunt (Sky found two truffles that Igor had to snatch from Sky before Sky ate them), we came back to a truffle flavored feast that Višnja prepared, with white (rare) and black truffles on bread, in eggs, in salad, and even in vanilla ice cream, which sounded to me like a Chopped challenge, but tasted like heaven.
My travel agent asked them to accommodate my no dairy preference, which they did, but I asked to try the cheese and ice cream. Well worth a cheat.
