We visited 8 wineries during our trip and this tasting and tour was, by far, the best we experienced not to mention their wine was amazing. Started off with being offered champagne from a bottle of 2013 Dom Perignon! The grounds and wine making areas of the winery were amazing. The architecture was incredible and the views terrific. Kaede was our tour person and she was incredible. Providing wonderful information about Promontory and its history. After the tour she brought us to a private room to taste some great wines. Truly worth every penny for what was an expensive tasting and tour. We will visit again

My husband arranged for a tasting for us while we were in Napa for my birthday weekend. Our appointment was on a Saturday afternoon at 1 pm and included a tour of the facilities as well as a tasting. The space was absolutely stunning and incredibly sleek. The wine cellar was kind of haunting and mysterious and lovely and we were able to taste a wine straight from the cask which was pretty cool. The whole experience last around 2 hours and was a highlight of the weekend!

Beautiful winery & phenomenal wine. We started off with a freshly opened Dom Perignon at 9:00am, with a fantastic view over the vineyards and the forest. The wine was so beautiful, the finish felt like it was going to last forever. It was very interesting that they age the wine in the casks - it’s crazy how nature can transform into a glass of wine like this. We bought of a few bottles of Promontory & Penultimate in different vintages - very excited to try & compare :) A fantastic experience.

Promontory Winery delivered an unforgettable experience from start to finish. We began with a tasting of Dom Pérignon, setting a luxurious tone for the day. The breathtaking views, outstanding wines, and exceptional hospitality made our visit truly special. Our host, Jessica, was phenomenal—knowledgeable, welcoming, and attentive, answering all our questions with expertise. Each wine was masterfully crafted, showcasing Promontory’s dedication to excellence. The elegant and serene setting elevated the experience even further. I highly recommend Promontory and Jessica for an unparalleled wine journey.

It's hard to find the words that would adequately describe this magnificent estate. It was magical from start to finish. We had a private tour of the grounds and wine tasting. Our dinner was with a private chef. His menu consists of chilled soup, duck and wagyu beef; there was as parmesan cheese cake that I wasn't crazy about, but everyone else really enjoyed. The entire staff are so knowledgeable and accommodating, it's apparent they all love their jobs with Promontory. I cannot recommend their grounds, wine tasting and wine enough.

What a remarkable experience we had touring Promontory with Crista this morning. The insights into the winery’s rich history, learning about the detailed winemaking process and the unique qualities of the wines was truly fascinating. Crista’s passion and knowledge made our tour both educational and enjoyable. Yes, Promontory is all about making world class wines but it goes beyond that. It’s also about building a long term (200+ year legacy), respecting and sustaining the land that they cultivate and promoting the highest level of hospitality and showing genuine appreciation for the people that support their efforts. Keep up the wonderful work and we look forward to visiting again in the near future!

I've visited a few times. Each time it's been an amazing experience and the hosts have all been very knowledgeable (most are WSET level 3+) and friendly. Hands down top 5% wine-tasting experience you can have in Napa, maybe even the world! It's very classy, your host meets you at the car/entrance, and in most cases, you see no other person or employee even during the entire 90-minute experience! Your group starts with a glass of Dom, overlooking the winery grounds (the actual vines grapes for Promontory are on the other side of the mountain iirc). A couple of tastings from the barrels themselves. The you taste a few vintages of Promontory and Penultimate in a seated tasting then. The glassware is all Zalto (even for water!). They serve it with some amazing parmesan from Italy and breadsticks. The focus is on the wine! Kids are welcome, but it's more of an adult experience. Well-behaved/older kids will do just fine, they even have some lemonade/drinks for them. You can buy bottles or join the founders list then to lock down an allocation. It's not cheap to visit or buy their wines, but if one can afford it, it's well worth a splurge.

OMG! What an amazing experience our wine tasting and tour was! The experience was so personal and exclusive. You get to the gate and have to announce yourself before they open the gate to let you in where you are greeted by your guide. In our case it was Ashley. She was so wonderful and animated. We related with her experience with Promontory. After quickly parking the car, she greeted us and took us inside yo the beautifully kept grounds where she offered us Champaign. This place is so beautiful and overlooks Harlan Estate which is unfortunately not open to the public. She gave us a lot of history on Promontory and the map of where all the grapes come from and the distillation process. Got to try an unfinished vintage straight out of the barrel to see how it differs from finished wine. Also got to try penultimate which is their second label. Also got to try an older vintage of promontory, 2012 which was soooo good! I was only allowed to buy one unfortunately. Amazing experience! Highly recommend the experience to everyone.

Yelp
Visited Promontory for a 10am experience with David. They offer introductory level wines to the Harlan Estate portfolio showcasing both Promontory & Penultimate varietals. The grounds are beautiful with breathtaking views at every corner. They not only think through their wines but also how they showcase each stage of their process. We were welcomed with a glass of Dom Perignon Champagne before being shown the wine cellar, barrel house, and private tasting room. David hand picked what wines we tasted. We experienced a barrel sample of a 2023 then later tasted a 2012 Penultimate and 2017 Promontory Library Vintage. If you are seeking to experience some of the best wines in the Napa Region, Promontory is one of the best options.

Yelp
Wow. An amazing experience. Ryanna did a great job welcoming me to Promontory. I enjoyed the tour, the wine and the grounds were beautiful. I would definitely go back. It is more costly than most places so would have expected a couple more tastings, but still fantastic all around.

Yelp
This is a must to try and get into as they are very exclusive! The property was amazing and the wine is top notch!

Yelp
If you get an opportunity to go, don't hesitate. I took a 10 am tasting (good thing is; it is 5 pm somewhere) Service is top notch Our host is the most knowledgeable compared to most high end wineries The experience is amazing

Yelp
This place is class. It's "old money" vibes. Our hostess greeted us as we parked our car. She was great. Having read about other people's experience prior to coming, I kind of knew what to expect. Still, my expectations were not only met but blown away. We did the '21 barrel tasting, and then were taken to a private room where we had the '19 Penultimate, '17 Promontory, and as a special treat, the '16 Promontory. They do not skimp on the pours. There was plenty of wine left, but I was driving and we had lunch reservations in Yountville. My motivation for the visit was to get off the waitlist and jump onto the Founder's List, which was exactly what I did. I also purchased a bottle of the 19' and '18 Promotory, knowing that I could have gotten them cheaper in the secondary market. Oh well. Anyways, I now have guaranteed allocations of both Promontory and Penultimate going forward FTW!

Yelp
Favorite winery of the ones I went to this trip. Jonathan was an excellent leader in the tour. Got to try the 2011, 2015, 2018, and 2022. Absolutely loved their 2018 Promontory, and ended up joining the Founders Club. The winery is very different from the commercialized venues we went to. It felt exclusive, fun, and special. Absolutely stunning and worth a visit.

Yelp
Promontory winery is part of Harlan Estate, another beautiful example of top quality wine produced in Napa Valley. I always enjoy bringing friends here that enjoy life, nature, exploring to see something entirely different than Typical wineries on the valley floor. There are excellent wineries of course in the valley but maybe just a few exceptional properties that make one say, Wow. Like Opus for example. So Bill Harlan did his research way back when and spent time in France learning about what qualities were necessary to produce Grand Cru first growth wine. He determined his winery should be at altitude on a hillside to produce his best wine. Both Harlan Estate and Promontory and Bond achieve this goal and the results are stellar. Promontory is consistently a top scoring wine and a visit to the winery gives you a chance to explore and taste and buy. If you're a club member the tasting fee is waived. This is not an insignificant thing--understand the bottles of Promontory start about $900 + so tasting will cost you. However if you go and buy you probably get some consideration on the fee. The tasting includes, the tour which is fun and filled with stories about the building of the winery. You'll start with a glass of Dom and head off to the tour of the property properly in a good mood. The wine tasting is just you and your party. This isn't the standard winery where buses are lined up with eager folks looking to get buzzed. Nope just you. In addition to tasting Promontory you'll taste Penultimate. Same grapes as what becomes Promontory but younger-- 15 years or less. We had the 2013 today. 11 years old. Beautiful wine and opened up nicely during the time we spent enjoying the tasting. The newer Years are roughly $400 a bottle -- a little time in the bottle age wise will make these super amazing in years to come. Just a note -- our host, Jessica is about the best there is-- energetic, enthusiastic, knowledgeable. Say hi when you go. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Been to a few wineries in the region and have to say it was really impressive. We had a private dinner for a few of our closest friends after a tour and tasting...one word to describe it... Spectacular!

Yelp
We had an amazing time at Dawn Patrol 2023. 7am tasting was a bit daunting but we couldn't pass up for the event. The staff was amazing, friendly, knowledgeable and the view was unbeatable. We were in awe of the view. Air was fresh. Seeing the property at sunrise was a real treat. mascot 2017 was lovely and i wonder how the 2019 would be if we aged it. It was a real treat to participate in the event this year. Recommend for anyone for future availability!!

Yelp
I worked six harvests in Napa , living in the hills above the property, and watched with curiosity as the wall and huge steel gate were erected. Work went on invisibly behind the "curtain" for years, and news leaked that the Harlan empire was expanding to this new winery with its dedicated vineyard. So finally setup a tasting for my wife's birthday here - knowing this was sure to be a special experience. Note appointments are required and there is a significant tasting fee - but justified given the experience- and it is credited against purchases. Our host Ashley is working on her Master Sommelier accreditation, and was a charming and knowledgeable host. You are greeted at the gate and escorted into an expansive entry, poured Dom Perignon - 2010 for us - and treated to spectacular views across the rugged terrain at the foot of the Mayacamas. Take time to appreciate the bas-relief sculpture of the hillside that shows each of the Harlan properties - Bond, Harlan and Promontory. Makes it easy to visualize snd appreciate the vision and process in producing these world class wines. The unique "waterfall" adds an acoustic calm to the birds singing in the background. The property is stunning. We were taken on a full tour of the winery and cellar- harvest was just underway - and tasting of some wines "in progress " from tank. The final stop was a private tasting room (see pics) with views across the ridge line snd tasting of current release and back vintage Promontory wines. After Ashley guided us through the tasting menu, we were left to enjoy the wines, sit inside or out on the patio, and the breadsticks and Vos water. This is a special spot to taste and appreciate terrific wines that most are unlikely to drink regularly. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Spectacular experience, with amazing views, a mystical tour, and great service from your personal tour guide. Promontory is a cult wine, meaning they have superfans, the wine is extremely limited and hard to buy in retail, and there is a mysterious aura about the place and the wine that makes it inexplicably special. The estate itself is like a Japanese-themed Batman lair. Super dark, sleek, but antique in certain areas, and hyper-tech in others. Think about dark wood, gigantic sliding doors, stage lights, concrete floors, deafening silence and long echoes -- you feel like you're in a movie the entire time. The entrance area provides an amazing view of the vineyards owned by the Harlan family, from the Mascot vineyard all the way to some Harlan Estate ones, and then the Promontory microclimate region is tucked in, surrounded by a bunch of mountains. You learn that the soils of promontory are special, because it is the only vineyard to have multiple types of volcanic rock. As for the 2008 Promontory, here are my notes: "This shouldn't be wine, it's not possible. You dip your nose and you realize it's more of a candle than liquid...wow! Strong floral notes (rare), lots of red and black fruits, tobacco, eucalyptus, minerals...you could go on forever. The tannins are ridiculous. Not only does the immense flavor last for minutes (like 30 minutes!), but the tannins linger forever. Your tongue will be changed for the next few hours, with the slightly thick, millions of sticky tannin textures that coat your mouth." And for the 2014 Penultimate: "It's not better than Promontory, but it's still really good. The nose is slightly less, but still that seductive, candle-like thickness on the nose. So many aromas, from your typical red and dark fruits to oak, minerals, some rose notes. The tannins are quite different though, where Penultimate has softer tannins, and doesn't linger as long. I think this is sort of a step into the Promontory world, before you take on the final boss." I came in not knowing what to expect from Promontory, but I am blown away. I am a superfan.

Yelp
Stellar wines. Stunning Property. MUST visit. Entering through an intimidating solid iron gate, one has no idea what to expect on the other side. The answer is simple, HEAVEN. The views here go on for days. The architecture and every corner of this winery begs to be photographed and taken in slowly. The tour begins with a glass of Dom Pérignon, of course it does! It follows with a bit of history and a walk through the barrel rooms (and quick sip off one!), before ending in one of the beautiful serene tasting rooms. Pause, sip, pinch myself, and repeat. That's pretty much how it went. A forever fan. To visit, contact the winery directly with plenty of time to make a reservation. The 90 minute sit-down experience is private and includes a taste directly from the cask (as I mentioned), and a couple of bottles from their library vintages.

Yelp
This is the site of one of the most talked-about projects in Napa - an 860-acre property called Promontory. The cult status of the wine from the most powerful family in Napa, along with Harlan, Bond. The sense of place at Promontory overlooking Bond and Harlan is magical. We have been at Promontory a handful of times and each time you cannot help but felt that I don't deserve to have the out of this world experience. All the hosts / wine educators / ambassadors are polished and knowledgeable. The Promontory wine is unique because of the not in your face (using the huge non French oak barrels) that is so elegant. Current release price is $650+ but it is definitely a special treat. Plan months ahead for your visits, and you won't be disappointed

Yelp
One of the most beautiful wineries I have been too! If you are able to do a tasting and visit , DO IT!!!! The wine is prestige , best of the best! Views are picturesque and serene ! Once you visit these nice wineries it's hard to compare to any others .

Yelp
This was our favorite tasting & tour in Napa. We visited back in September and have recommended Promontory to everyone who has planned a Napa trip for 2023. The tour started with a glass of champagne and a walk of the wineries amazing grounds. The architecture here is spectacular and it is an amazing view. We ended up purchasing a few bottles to have shipped back home to New Jersey. The process was easy & efficient and we received our purchases back home in a timely manner. We will definitely be returning for another tour & tasting the next time we are in Napa. Definitely worth the money.
google avatar

Raviphol S.

Yelp
Highly recommend the tasting experience. Stunning view, wine making facilities, and cellars. In terms of tasting, they are pretty generous with the pour considering their wine price, but not much variety. In terms of quality, this is one of the best red wines I've ever tasted. It's def my favorite in Harlan's portfolio, and can go toe-to-toe with bdx first growths. Is it worth the price?

Yelp
Talk about an exclusive wine tasting experience. I missed an opportunity to come with a friend last year, so we were excited to get a reservation this time. The property is very discrete, hidden behind a gate. Once you enter, it feels like a whole different world. We saw one other party there on their way out, and then we had the entire place to ourselves. They started us with a bottle of 2010 Dom, and we had sweeping views of the Harlan vineyards and Napa valley. We reviewed some geography and topography before heading over to the fermentation area. We just happened to come during harvest and were able to see all of the action. You then proceed down to a private cask tasting area before finally heading to the private tasting room with the most grand open view of the valley. We had a 2008 Promontory and the 2014 Penultimate, which is their newer project. I preferred the Promontory, but I'm glad we got to try the Penultimate. I appreciate the Voss and parmigiano + bread sticks for in between sips. Ashley took care of us and was by far the most knowledgeable host I've ever had. She's a sommelier by training and is incredibly knowledgeable and yet so approachable. She truly made the experience for us. For what you get, the tasting price is actually a very good value, especially since so many other Napa places charge $100-200 these days for much less exclusive and unique experiences. Fortunately, our friends are members at Harlan; otherwise, getting a reservation is not easy!
google avatar

Julie L.

Yelp
The experience at Promontory is truly world class and very exclusive. You will probably drive pass it as they don't have any sign at their grand gate. The devil is in the details. Promontory Winery is newly opened last year. If you ever tasted Harlan Red (RP 100), this is the only place that you can tour the similar kind of wine estate as Harlan don't open to the public. The tour requires reservation ahead of time and it will be private tour for the whole time with no one else. It is truly top notch so you won't find anything close to this type of experience. The wine tour includes the tour of the estates with a welcome champagne looking at the Harlan Estate. An introduction about Promontory at the model room and a tasting tour of wine directly from barrel and sit down tasting at a private cigar room.

Yelp
Wow. What else can I say. Every aspect is a wow factor. From staff, views, venue, food and of course the wine.

Yelp
Breathtaking view and loving all the details of this property. Great venue to have dinner and events. Very accommodating with your needs. Special thank you to Anne. Make sure you make an appointment ahead - Cheers!

Yelp
Phenomenal wines! Gorgeous estate! As an allocation member, I was excited to finally be able to visit PROMONTORY. I was not disappointed. The estate is breath taking. Ask for Francois! He is amazing!!

Yelp
What a place! This is next level! Epic, beautiful, delicious. You book a private tour and it is so worth it and even bought a few bottles. Christy was our fearless leader and she clearly loves what she does and was the best docent as she had so much information for us. The grounds and architecture supply the most beautiful backdrop to a lovely day with friends. I will be back.

Yelp
Absolutely the best winery in napa! We love this place. The wines are amazing, the staff are phenomenal and everything is great.

Yelp
this winery is truly exceptional. from the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon to the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, were all incredible. and unlike Harlan Estate and Bond, which sell wine only through their allocated mailing list, Promontory actually have wine for sale at the winery. (it's all owned by the same man, Bill Harlan). $750 a bottle for the Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 and $650 a bottle for the Cabernet Sauvignon 2012. however what I'm looking forward the most is the release of the Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 (to be released in 2020). this one to be laid down to mature, it will develop into something really quite special. Promontory's tasting appointments, in limited supply, cost $200 per person and it also goes toward the cost of the wine if you purchased some. Promontory - whose two seismic fault lines give it three distinct soil series, including a highly heterogeneous metamorphic pocket - is jagged, steep and rocky. and the wines reflect this landscape. Unique and Charismatic.

Yelp
The attention to detail here is incredible. Elegant yet understated and nothing has been left to chance. We were met by Mollie right as we drove up. We walked in to the reception area which has a beautiful view of the Harlan properties and offered a glass of Dom Perignon. The tour took us to to several areas. The space with the tanks is amazing. Three types of tanks, beautiful architecture. We then went to the cask room. Talk about striking. I would love to have one at home. Here we were offered a barrel sample of the 2016 I believe. Very young wine for this winery but fun to try. Throughout the entire tour Mollie was very knowledgeable and open to questions. She's a great ambassador for the winery. Additional wonderful rooms and views. So nicely done. The tasting area had a window that fully opened and had such a peaceful and extensive view. We had two wines....the 2008 and a 2012. Great wines to match the winery. Really very nice.....very pricey but very nice. Very smooth yet not wimpy. We had a nice conversation with Mollie while we tasted. This is unlike any other tasting we've done. Definitely high end yet so informative. We were fortunate the Christy invited us to visit (thank you Christy) to experience this wonderful place.

Yelp
Another perfect beautiful vision by Harlan. This wine is so amazing and the property is equally special. Can't say enough, you have to experience.
google avatar

Alex V.

Yelp
All I can say is beautiful The views are absolutely breath taking of the valley ! The wine is even better ! Beautiful experience. These pictures don't do it justice ! Had a great time!

Alex G.

Yelp
Simply the best. Holy macaroni. Beautiful, sexy, modern, clean, and completely enjoyable. This is a gorgeous, Napa sanctuary, with no parallel to be found in this county. I cannot say enough good things about the grounds, the winery, the service, the tasting experience, and the wines themselves. Come to this temple of wine and be cleansed of your sins. Well, at least you'll drink amazing wines!
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
This place is super high end and if you think about the price of any bottle it's NOT for you. That said, this place is AMAZING. So nice overlooking the whole Napa Valley. Met with a Don Paragon 2006 bottle with a HUGE pour while you walk around. You get to tour of the whole place, which is so so nice and Molly know like everything about wine. Also being from Overland Park (aka Kansas City) she is totally down to earth. Amazing wine and great service. If price is no issue go, go, go. If price is an issue go to Turnbull or Chase (90% as good of wine but 10% of the experience as here).
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning facility, amazing views and the wine is great. We had the most amazing hostess Christy who toured us through the facility. Definitely worth the price of admission. For our group we started with 2009 Dom, did a cask tasting in the cellar of the 2016 I believe and finally sat down and did a side by side of the 2008 and 2012. All around great experience and we hope to be back next time we visit napa!

Sarah L.

Yelp
Traveling from Chicago and it exceeded all of our expectations! We had the most wonderful host, Cassandra, that made sure we had the absolute best time. The architecture is out of this world and I would recommend the wine tasting to absolutely everyone! Well worth the price!!! Thank you Cassandra!

Bill H.

Yelp
There's a good reason so many reviews refer to this as a unique experience. Mr. Harlan does nothing by halves, and the imposing slabs of concrete used in the architecture, the softly reverential lighting, and the utterly immaculate level of cleanliness all combine to make you feel more like you're in a temple than a winery. But there was nothing stilted or off putting about any aspect of our visit. Hailey couldn't have been more welcoming and knowledgeable, and all the wines she presented were truly superb. If you want to experience the finest that Napa has to offer, go to Promontory.

Tim M.

Yelp
My wife and I did a personal tour in July 2017. I meant to post this more than a year ago. We were very fortunate to have bought Harlan wine before and were given a tour during their second month of operation for tours. It was the best tour we have ever done out of nearly 30 others. Including a private tour of Penfolds in Australia Grange tour and meeting John Shafer in 2010 on his Hillside Select tour. Terrific decor and intimate atmosphere at Promontory. High quality wine that is already 5 years aged at purchase.

Rosalie T.

Yelp
I discovered Promontory through a blog and was dying to try this place. We had tried to get in on one of our trips up there, but they did not have any availability. Booking ahead is your best. For our next trip up there, I contacted Carl from Savor Napa Valley Wine Tours a couple months in advance and he arranged a few tastings for us, with this one on the top of the list. I must say, it was well worth the wait and a truly amazing and exclusive experience. Your visit is entirely a private tour and tasting. We enjoyed every moment... from David welcoming us at the door, the tour he gave us of the beautiful winery, the gorgeous landscape, amazing architecture, learning about the history, the Dom pour to welcome us, and the gorgeous private tasting room. We have done the private tour of the Dom Perignon cellars in Epernay, France, which was very special, and this tour is right on par. Aside from the experience, the wine is just spectacular! Definitely not hype. All the effort put in and details you learn throughout the tour reflect in the wine. It's superb. This winery is world class and most definitely worth a planned visit.
