Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay

There is no way that this hotel should be under the Marriott brand in any shape or form. It looks and feels and smells as though nothing has been invested in its fundamentals for the last 25 years at least. The general manager who tried to patch things up may or may not have decision-making power in budgeting and investments but everything here is done on the cheap. The pool is dirty. The bedding is old. The cleaning people mindlessly push mops around the floors but don’t pick up dead insects. More or less any of the food that was made with more than a couple of ingredients has cheap fillers in it. And the noise both within due to minimal sound insulation between rooms and without due to heavily trafficked area and once again no sound insulation is something that the website should be honest about the very least. And this doesn’t apparently stop them from charging 10 times cost price for a small bottle of soda water. This place has pretentions way beyond its reality. I will acknowledge that the staff and manager did try fairly clumsily to make up for the shortcomings, by leaving a bottle of cheap red wine in my room, and giving me a ride to the airport when I finally lost patience since there was no longer any Wi-Fi because the place was saturated. But it was honestly a question of too little too late.

This is my second time at this hotel. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The facility has a nice swimming pool and restaurant. The food options are varied and meet varied tastes and likes. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again or recommend staying here.

The location is great and the staff are exceptional, so very friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant is excellent and the pool area is nice to hang out, have a drink and a dip in the pool! I would recommend this hotel. This is my second time here.

The gardens, the pool, and the apartments are well maintained. |Staff is friendly, helpful, and very professional. |The restaurant also has a variety of menus, and we mostly had our lunches and dinners there. |We have been to this hotel several times. |The experience after each stay keeps us coming back.|An important thing to note too is that, it is easily reachable from the airport,|not far from the town centre, and close to the local art and craft shops.

Old hard towels that used to be white . Lizards enter rooms and reception is rude when you ask for help . Bedding is old and worn out . Rooms just smell funny and are out dated . The pool area is the only nice part of that hotel . The rest needs to be refurbished.

We were at the Portea Hotel Oyster Bay and enjoyed the stay as a group of us were travelling to Dar for business. The hotel has all the required amenities, friendly staff, great food at the restaurant. I look forward to staying here in the future.

The hotel is dated. The beds are uncomfortable. The rooms are tired and the entire property should be re-examined as a Marriot property. All of the service provided at the hotel was acceptable except for the duty manager and Indian man who is rude, manipulative and extremely incompetent perhaps the worst I’ve ever encountered. I have ambassador elite status with Marriot meaning I spend over 100 nights a year in properties around the world. This was the worst experience I’ve ever had as a Marriot guest stay away from this hotel.

I think this is a perfect place for people coming to visit Dar es salaam for a short stay. The place is not far from restaurants, a few blocks from a good hospital and it’s quiet for those looking for a quiet place to stay. I have had friends and co workers coming from Zanzibar and other places stay and they all love the place. I would recommend next time you are in Dar to give this place a try.
