Protea Hotel Knysna Quays

We had a lovely 2 night stay at this hotel as part of a group tour and of all the places we've stayed so far this is the best. It is ideally located for the quayside, with its eateries and shops and also the Featherbed nature reserve which is well worth a trip. The bed is lovely and comfortable, the room well equipped, the breakfast tasty and plenty options as well as an egg station which is always a nice lottery bonus. The team are friendly and the pool, although small is a nice place to spend a few hours chilling. By far the best part of or stay though was our amazing massage courtesy of Penny. We have had quite a few massages in various countries and this one was definitely up there amongst the best - very reasonably priced and such a lovely, relaxing experience in the hands of a definite professional. Please book, you won't be disappointed.

The room was spacious with a king bed and working desk with room heater. There was not really a view but it didn't really matter

Best stay of our trip, the hotel is gorgeous the room we booked was a bit small, but location was perfect we could walk to dinner and the breakfast at the hotel was amazing with halal options. Very family friendly, the pool is a great place to hangout between activities. Absolutely loved our stay here.

The redeeming feature of this hotel is that it is close to the waterfront. Other than that not that much. No food menu for during the day so if you are sitting at the pool for example you have to go and get dressed to go to one of the restaurants around the waterfront area to get food. Very inconvenient. Room cleaned and towels not replaced. No gym, the lifts are out of order. Generally a bit run down. Certainly not what you would expect!

My stay: Dec 25 -3 Jan 2026 This hotel proved to be top notch from the get go. Alvena, at reservation went above and beyond to accommodate us at very short notice. Because we booked 2 days before arrival, I expected the worst possible room with no view, But instead, she not only gave us a good rate, but a brilliant room with a view. Meeting her proved that she was kind and amazing in person as well. The GM, Erené Van Heerden, upon arrival invited us for breakfast as we were not having breakfast on our last day. She is the most amazing human, not only to her guests but to her staff as well. She is a leader of note and will make a plan at the drop of a hat, to make sure your stay is pleasant. Every single member of staff went out of their way! Even offering to fetch food for us at a nearby restaurant to avoid us paying the delivery fee. I wouldn’t allow this, but it was offered to us. Not what I have expected. Still the same like the past few years. Lift stopped working on the 30th Dec.25. Had to use stairs to go up and down. Hotel TV room still an old analog TV with poor TV quality in 2026 when we are watching 4K TV. Room towels very old and hard which is very disappointing for a 4 Star establishment. No Lounge,Dinner or finger luch is served at the hotel except Breakfast. Hotel refurbishment is only done during peak festive season. Poor planning 😢. Nothing was planned for New Year's Eve, it was just business as usual. Very disappointing 😞

Good quality room with work space and plenty of plugs unlike many hotels we stayed in South Africa. Bathroom large and of high quality with waterfall shower. Good breakfast and location to marina

I checked in on the 19th Dec. '25 and after having asked the staff on multiple occasions when staying here in the past that I despise the rooms above the shop roofs, I unbelievably got that same room. I refused that room and opted to pay an additional amount for another room. I was told that the room is however not yet ready, but would be in 45 mins. I left and returned about 70 mins later, only to be told that its gona take another 20 mins. When I eventually got into the room a number of items was absent, e.g. drinking water and soap. Worst of all was the evening when I opened the bed to settle in. Disgistingly, the bedsheet had clear fresh blood spots on it...and worst of all a scab staring me in the face. Needless to say I was revolted... I took pics this, which I will definitely be escalating to the highest levels. The records will reflect that I've been frequenting this hotel for many years and I've had good and bad experiences... But this is beyond comprehension.
